Hody Childress , a farmer from Geraldine, Alabama, lived the last 10 years of his life with a little secret.
In the small town where he lived his entire life, Childress wanted to help his community. He knew there were families in his hometown that were struggling financially. So one day he pulled his local pharmacist (药剂师), Brooke Walker, to the side and asked, “Do you ever meet anybody who can’t pay for their medicine ” “Well, yeah, unfortunately , that happens a good bit,” Walker said. So Childress donated $100 to the local pharmacy for anyone who couldn’t afford to pay for medicine and said to Walker, “Next time that happens, you can use this. Don’t tell them where it came from, and don’t tell me who needed it.”
This act of generosity continued for nearly 10 years, up until his death in January 2023. And his story only came to light at his funeral, when his daughter, Tania Nix, wanted to show what kind of man her father was.
In fact, the 80-year-old only revealed his generosity to his daughter when he was unable to get to the pharmacy himself. He asked his daughter to take a $100 bill to the drugstore on the first day of the month. Nix continued to drop off the money to the pharmacy and didn’t tell anybody about what her dad was doing.
With her brother Doug, Nix shared, “It’s really hard for us to decide whether to allow this story out to the public, but I feel like a small deed (行为) can turn into a big deed—or it can turn into something that gives people hope. If it can encourage anyone to be a better person and want to help others, it’s worth it.”
According to the BBC, since the story was first published by the Washington Post, the pharmacy has received donations from all over the country.

Billions of people deal with a nail-biting habit at some point in their lives. Many will go to great lengths to try to stop. And while not all of us are nail-biters, most of us do have a habit we’d like to kick. So what’s the best way to break one
Research shows that intentions alone often fail to lead to long-term behavior change. This isn't to say you can’t break a habit. Rather, by understanding the basis of habits, you can create better plans for changing them. For example, we know habits are often affected by environments and routines. Lying in bed may cause you to endlessly scroll through your phone, or watching TV on the couch may lead you to grab a sugary snack.
One of the most effective ways to manage behavior is to identify these locations or times of day. Then try to modify them by changing your routine or creating obstacles that make it more difficult to perform the habit in that space. Moving, switching jobs, or even starting a new schedule, are particularly great times to break a habit or build a new one.
One 2005 study tracked university students’ exercising, reading, and TV-watching habits before and after they transferred schools. When students were no longer around old environments and routines, their habits, even the strong ones, significantly changed.
For behaviors like nail-biting, a practice called habit reversal training can be helpful. Developed by psychologists in the 1970s, the aim is to change a habit by replacing it with another one that’s less detrimental. The training requires you to analyze and understand your habit cues, so you can effectively step in at the right times. For example, if you tend to bite your nails at work, keep a fidget toy at your desk in advance. Then, if a stressful email comes in, use the toy when you feel the urge to bite your nails.
Breaking a habit takes time, so remember to give yourself grace and have patience through the process.
28.Why does the author mention “a nail-biting habit” in Para.1
A.To make a comparison. B.To make a conclusion.
C.To introduce the topic. D.To attract readers' attention.
29.What is the best way to help us control our action
A.Having intentions alone. B.Understanding the basis of habits.
C.Making practical plans. D.Adapting the environments or times.
30.What does the underlined word “detrimental” in Para.5 probably mean
A.Harmful. B.Helpful. C.Annoying. D.Time-consuming.
31.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.Difficulties in dealing with nail-biting. B.Significance of habit reversal training.
C.Useful tips on getting rid of a habit. D.Necessity of having grace and patience.

Finland’s system for returning drink containers started in the 1950s, and today almost every bottle and can is recycled. Convenience is the cornerstone of the system’s success.
Nowadays there are almost 5,000 container-return machines across Finland. Most of them are located in the same shops that sell drinks, making returning them a convenient part of people’s routine. Hotels, restaurants, offices, schools and event organizers return containers through their drink providers.
The return machines are easy to use. You place a bottle or can on a set of mini conveyor belts at the front of the machine. They carry it past a scanner and out of sight. The machine sorts the bottles and crushes the cans. When you’re done, you press a button and the machine gives you a receipt. Plastic bottles are worth 20 to 40 cents, depending on their size, while glass bottles are worth 10 to 40 cents and aluminium (铝) cans are 15 cents. The returned containers are recycled or the materials are reused. Across Finland, on average, every Finn returns 373 items in a year: 251 aluminium cans, 98 plastic bottles and 24 glass bottles.
The government has entrusted this function to the private agency. “Palpa is completely nonprofit and receives no government funding,” says Tommi Vihavainen, Palpa’s director of producer services, ICT and communication.
Russia, the UK and other countries have shown interest in the Finnish system. “Most visitors want to see how the return system works in Finland,” says Vihavainen. “We don’t act as consultants, but we’re proud to present our system.”
32.What do we know about Finland’s system for returning drink containers
A.It still has a long way to develop. B.It gains popularity for its convenience.
C.It used to be fashionable but now out-dated. D.It’s supported financially by the government.
33.Why does the writer use the figures in paragraph 3
A.To show Finns consume various drinks. B.To help make the story more interesting.
C.To make the impact of the system convincing. D.To guarantee the proper logic of the passage.
34.What’s Vihavainen’s attitude towards the return system
A.Indifferent. B.Positive. C.Pessimistic. D.Dismissive.
35.What is the passage mainly about
A.Finland’s recycling programme keeps bottles off streets.
B.The return machines in the world are popular and easy.
C.Palpa—a complete nonprofit to recycle the bottles.
D.Finland—a country free of waste such as bottles.

Digital art is becoming increasingly popular among many artists. 36 Then, after learning the basics of digital art and getting plenty of practice, you’ll be well on your way to excelling at digital drawing.
37 Don’t add too much detail such as fur or clothing texture. Place your drawing face down on the scanner (扫描仪). Close the scanner and then start the scan. Name the file once it’s finished scanning and save it as a PNG or JPEG for the highest quality.
Then make layers (图层). 38 So first, create a background layer by hitting the new layer button, and using the fill-in tool to fill the transparent layer in white. Then drag that layer to the bottom, so that it’s the first layer of the drawing. Multiple layers allow for more detail and flexibility without the risk of messing up the entire piece.
On each layer you’ve created, start outlining the sketch (草图) with the brush tool. 39 In this step you can also fix any mistakes that you made while sketching. After you’ve outlined your drawing, you’ll need to sketch out the colors of your drawing. Use brushes of varying sizes, depending on how big of an area you’re filling in, and color in all the different sections of your drawing. Just use a single color for each area, like the face, hair, and each article of clothing. 40 When finished, be sure to merge (合并) all the layers. Save a copy of the file so that you can go back and work on it later if you choose.
A.Draw your idea on paper.
B.Right now your draft is the only layer in the file.
C.The outline will make things easier to color later on.
D.Think about what you want to create before you work on it.
E.The more layers you add, the better the drawing will look.
F.Besides, you can add more layers and have more detail polished.
G.To make digital art, you first need a computer and a program for digital drawing.

Good morning everyone. As you make a list of New Year’s resolutions, you will want to set yourself up for success. If healthy eating is one of your New Year’s resolutions, maybe you should try the Mediterranean diet. The Mediterranean diet was rated as the best overall diet of 2021. This is the fourth year in a row the diet has been ranked top. The Mediterranean diet is based on the eating habits in areas of southern Italy and parts of Greece, Spain and Morocco. It features plant-based foods like fruits and vegetables, whole grains and seeds, and has a heavy emphasis on good quality olive oil. That means the diet is rich in flavor but low in fat. In addition to helping people keep weight off, experts believe that the diet can reduce the risks of heart disease and high blood pressure. “Eating together” is part of the cultural identity of communities throughout the Mediterranean. In Mediterranean areas, it is a custom to eat at big tables, surrounded by family and friends. A meal can often last several hours. ”It’s more than a diet, it’s a healthy lifestyle,” said Rahaf Al Bochi, who teaches the Mediterranean diet to her clients.

根据划线词上文“Developed by psychologists in the 1970s, the aim is to change a habit by replacing it with another one that’s less…(心理学家在20世纪70年代提出了这种方法,目的是通过另一种不那么……的习惯来改变这一习惯)”以及后文的例子“For example, if you tend to bite your nails at work, keep a fidget toy at your desk in advance. Then, if a stressful email comes in, use the toy when you feel the urge to bite your nails.(例如,如果你经常在工作时咬指甲,那就提前在桌子上放一个烦躁玩具。然后,如果收到一封压力很大的邮件,在你想咬指甲的时候使用这个玩具。)”可知,如果收到一封压力大的电子邮件时,当你感到想要咬指甲时,就使用这个玩具,这种危害性较小的行为来代替咬指甲这种习惯,即通过一种危害性较小的习惯来取代或者改变原有的习惯。由此可知,detrimental意为“有害的”。故选A。
根据文章第一段“And while not all of us are nail-biters, most of us do have a habit we’d like to kick.

What I lost, 52 , was the ability to grow from 53 by looking through the eyes of others. In learning to be more 54 , I’ve also found more happiness and success.
You can fit more rounded rocks in a jar than those with sharp edges. The former look for ways to 55 and make room for others, while the latter never give an 56 to accommodate others.
57 , like the waters rolling against once sharp stones, changes us by washing away our resistance to 58 the world from someone else’s point of view.

5.their→our
6.technologically→technological
7.by后加the

9.finish→finishing
10.pursuit→pursuits
根据句子之间的逻辑关系可知,该句“a lecture named “lifelong education” was held at my school last Thursday. ”与其前的句子为因果关系,且位于句首,首字母要大写。故将However改为Therefore/Thus/Hence。
故将that改为what。
故删除and后的was。
故将their改为our。
故在by后加the。
故将to改为of。

Dear Jim,
I’m glad to hear that you’ll visit China. I know it isn’t easy to remember everything that you have to know in China. But I think the following rules are important for you to know about them. First, you are supposed to shake hands when you meet people for the first time. Then, at the dinner table, you are supposed to use chopsticks to eat almost everything instead of knife and fork. And it’s rude to stick your chopsticks into your food. Also you should pick up you bowl of rice while eating rice. They are quite different from the manners in the US. But don’t worry! You’ll get used to them quickly. And you’ll have a good time here.
Yours,
Li hua
