I was sitting in my high school classroom, nervously tapping my pencil against the desk as I awaited the start of the English exam.
As the clock struck, signaling the beginning of the exam, my heart began to race. I opened the exam booklet and scanned the questions, and I felt a wave of panic over me. The questions seemed foreign, and the topics unfamiliar. In a state of panic, I hurriedly wrote down my answers, hoping that somehow, by some stroke of luck, they would be correct. But as the minutes went by, I realized I couldn’t seem to make sense of the questions before me. As the final bell rang, I handed in my paper with a heavy heart.
In the days that followed, I couldn’t shake the feeling of failure that hung over me like a dark cloud. I replayed the exam over and over in my mind, analyzing every question, every answer, searching for clues as to where I had gone wrong.
But in the depression, a realization began to dawn on me — I had failed, yes, but I had also learned valuable lessons along the way. Armed with this newfound wisdom, I ensured that I would do better next time. I threw myself into my studies with renewed determination, devouring books and practicing past exams with an eagerness I had never known before.
When the time came to retake the exam, I was ready. I approached each question with confidence and clarity, drawing upon the lessons I had learned from my previous missteps.
When the results were announced, I held my breath as I scanned the list of names. And there it was — my name, shining brightly among the list of successful candidates. At that moment, all the hard work, all the late nights and early mornings, were worth it.
And as I look back on that sunny afternoon in the high school classroom, I am grateful for the lessons it taught me, and the person it helped me become.

The past few months have brought electrifying news that, for the first time, a gene treatment has provided some hearing to children born with deafness.
Eli Lilly announced this week, for example, that a profoundly deaf boy from Morocco given its treatment as part of a clinical trial in Philadelphia can now hear. And five children in China treated similarly at younger ages gained hearing with some able to verbally communicate without their cochlear implants (人工耳蜗). Their hearing recovery, first covered by the press in October 2023, is described in detail this week in The Lancet.
“It’s an enormous achievement,” says geneticist Karen Avraham of Tel Aviv University. Otolaryngologist (耳鼻喉科专家) and gene therapist Lawrence Lustig of Columbia University, whose lab was among the first to test the same approach in mice, agrees. “Other than cochlear implants, we haven’t really had any successful treatments to treat deafness,” he notes.
The various efforts from companies and academic centers each use a virus to insert the same gene, OTOF, into the children’s inner ear so the so-called hair cells there can sense sound and transmit it to the brain.
The new deafness treatments add to a string of recent successes for the gene treatment field, but also raise questions. The ear’s hair cells don’t divide, so the new copies of OTOF they contain should persist and continue to instruct the cells to make OTOF. Gene expression could drop off over time or the ear could mount an immune response that shuts it off.
But Lustig is optimistic that the various challenges will be overcome. “Now that we’ve got one success story, there’s going to be more money coming in to fund some of these other projects,” he says.
28.What do we know about the new treatment
A.It is a totally mature practice. B.It’s a China-only clinical trial.
C.It uses a virus to sense sound. D.It aims to treat the deafness.
29.Which of the following best describes the impact of the treatment
A.Breakthrough. B.Regret. C.Disappointment. D.Adventure.
30.What is the problem of the gene treatment
A.The brain refuses to receive it.
B.Gene stops to produce hair cells.
C.Gene expression might be weakened.
D.Companies really profit a lot from it.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Electrifying News Based on Some Clinical Trials
B.Gene Treatment That Brings Deaf Children Hope
C.Ways How Scientists Develop Cochlear Implants
D.Challenges About the New Deafness Treatment

Meat cultivated (培植) from cells—with no need to raise and kill animals—is now a reality. The process of cultivating meat uses the basic elements needed to build muscle and fat and enables the same biological process that happens inside an animal. Cultivated meat is identical to conventional meat at the cellular level. But can it be made cheaply enough to replace animal agriculture
More than 150 startups are pursuing an ambitious goal: meat that doesn’t require raising and killing animals and that is affordable and tastes and feels like the meat we eat now. They are part of a young industry aiming to use cell biology to reduce the environmental impact of the world’s ever-increasing demand for meat and change global protein production the way electric cars are shaking up the auto industry.
“We are addicted to meat as a species. It’s part of our culture,” said Believer founder Yaakov Nahmias. But “we thought about quantity rather than the environment, rather than sustainability.”
Although there are dozens of companies making this meat, none have yet reached commercial-level production in terms of scale or cost. From cell line development to bio-processor design, there are a number of scientific challenges to meet before cultivated meat is widely available at the market. Government policy is another challenge. Only Singapore and the U. S. allow sales of cultivated meat.
And while many people who have tried it say they like it, others find the idea distasteful. A recent survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that half of U. S. adults would be unlikely to try it. When they were asked why, about half said they didn’t think it would be safe. Even Nahmias’10-year-old son Oren said he would only eat traditional meat. “I feel bad” for the animals, he said, “but they are yummy!”
“Until this meat costs and tastes the same as traditional meat, it will remain a specialized product,” said Bruce Friedrich, president of the Good Food Institute.
32.Why does the writer ask a question in the first paragraph
A.To indicate an opinion. B.To present a worry.
C.To make an assumption. D.To start a discussion.
33.What does the cultivated meat industry aim to do
A.Study cell biology. B.Provide sustainable protein.
C.End world hunger. D.Help the traditional food industry.
34.What can we infer about cultivated meat
A.It is unripe for mass production. B.It is as popular as traditional meat.
C.It is safer than traditional meat. D.It is competitive in price and quantity.
35.What is Bruce Friedrich’s attitude to the future of cultivated meat
A.Enthusiastic. B.Dismissive. C.Unclear. D.Reserved.

Across the UK, a group of volunteer motorcyclists are helping hospitals by delivering blood. Angela Brown is one of them. She is on call for 80 hours each month. At very short notice, she can be woken in the night and find herself riding a motorbike with a vital delivery for a hospital. But she’s not an employee of any hospital. She’s just a volunteer, one of the 1,400 advanced qualified riders of the Association of Blood Bikers. Last year, the Association's bikers responded to around 35,000 rapid transport requests from 262 UK hospitals. Besides blood, the bikers also deliver surgical tools and medicine. Brown first discovered blood biking when she was on a course at the institute of advanced motorists. Her trainer was a blood biker. Under his influence, Brown started volunteering as a rider. She later discovered that blood bikers once helped her own nephew, Peter. He received blood delivered by a rider on New Year’s Eve, 2015. Brown says being a blood biker is a way of helping the community and being on the bike at the same time.

C.Unclear. D.Reserved.
【答案】32.D 33.B 34.A 35.D

The process of cultivating meat uses the basic elements needed to build muscle and fat and enables the same biological process that happens inside an animal. Cultivated meat is identical to conventional meat at the cellular level. But can it be made cheaply enough to replace animal agriculture
根据第二段“They are part of a young industry aiming to use cell biology to reduce the environmental impact of the world’s ever-increasing demand for meat and change global protein production the way electric cars are shaking up the auto industry. (它们是一个年轻行业的一部分,该行业旨在利用细胞生物学来减少世界对肉类日益增长的需求对环境的影响,并改变全球蛋白质生产,就像电动汽车正在撼动汽车行业一样)”可知,培植肉类行业的目标是提供可持续的蛋白质。故选B。
34.推理判断题。根据第四段“there are a number of scientific challenges to meet before cultivated meat is widely available at the market. (从细胞系开发到生物处理器设计,在培植肉在市场上广泛上市之前,需要应对许多科学挑战)”可知,大规模生产培植肉类还未成熟。故选A。
35.推理判断题。根据最后一段““Until this meat costs and tastes the same as traditional meat, it will remain a specialized product,” said Bruce Friedrich, president of the Good Food Institute. (美食研究所所长布鲁斯·弗里德里希说:“在这种肉的价格和味道与传统肉相同之前,它将一直是一种专业产品。”)”可知,布鲁斯·弗里德里希对培植肉持有保守的态度。故选D。
