My friend and I recently took an art class together through our town’s community education program. Our classmates were a mix of ages, stages of life, and experience with making art. We stood out in the class—not for our artistic talent, but for our consistent encouragement of ourselves, each other, and the group. It got me thinking how encouragement had become a routine.
It became something of a joke between the two of us to compliment(赞美) each other, offer a positive comment when another student showed his or her work, and generally chat around the table about how fun our project was going. But reflecting back, our positivist was anything but a joke. It was a bright light in my week, a space where I knew I could be surrounded with kindness, gentleness, and positivist.
Here’s the most special thing about it; my friend’s and my positive conversation wasn’t just encouraging, it was true. We didn’t go for cheap or false compliments like, “This painting should be in a museum!” Instead, we went for authentic(真实的) expressions of support and encouragement, like, “I love how you did that cloud!”
Over time, the class became something of a sacred space, because we had made a habit of using encouraging, supportive language. Sentence-starters like, “I like,” “I appreciate,” “I want to try”, kept us present, positive, and honest.
The encouragement also kept us engaged in the work of making art. I feel sure that I learned more—and practiced more at home—because the activity was shown in such consistently positive terms, grounded in a growth mindset, self-acceptance, and encouragement.
Having a friend to share an encouragement habit is fantastic, but you can practice it on your own as pliment yourself in the mirror every morning. Keep a running “great work.” list of thing you are doing well today. Trust in your ability to find something loving—and true-to comment today and every day.

C.By displaying abstract art works in the class.
D.By offering supportive language around them.
26.What did the author think of the art project
A.It made him hopeful and confident.
B.It needed to provide more practice.
C.It was cheap and easy to carry out.
D.It promoted his communication skills.
27.What is the author’s purpose of writing the text
A.To introduce a community education program.
B.To call for good action to support those in need
C.To describe how to make encouragement a habit.
D.To comment on the power of authentic expressions.

Historical accounts often described the now-extinct California grizzly bears as huge beasts ready to attack humans and livestock at any time. But according to a new paper, scientists say the truth might have been less dramatic: The bears ate a mostly vegetarian diet and were smaller than previously described. California grizzly bears once roamed in the Golden State. But European settlers often hunted, poisoned and trapped the creatures. Over time, because of these human activities, the California grizzly population declined. The last reliable sighting of a California grizzly bear occurred 100 years ago in 1924, and the animals disappeared completely sometime after that.
Researchers wanted to get a better understanding of the factors that accelerated the bears’ extinction. They also hoped to gain more insight into the creatures’ behavior, size and diet. To do so, they turned to documents and California grizzly specimens in natural history collections. They measured the animals’ skulls and teeth and analyzed their bones and pelts. The researchers found that California grizzly bears were much smaller than the 2,000 pounds often reported at the time. Historical accounts might not necessarily have been wrong, but they might have only included the largest bears. In addition, analyses of the animals’ bones and skins suggest the bears were primarily eating plants, which stands in contrast to their fear some hyper carnivorous (超级食肉的) reputation. “The bears likely increased meat consumption due to landscape changes coupled with the arrival of livestock,” says study co-author Alexis Mychajliw. However, researchers found the animals still ate a majority vegetarian diet and killed far less livestock than historical accounts suggested.
By digging beyond the bears’ reputation, the researchers gained a more accurate understanding of the California grizzly’s biology and natural history. And since scientists and land managers often rely on historical accounts when reintroducing animals to their former habitats, the study serves as a reminder that those old newspapers and journals do not tell the whole story.
28.What does the underlined word “roamed” in paragraph 1 mean
A.Disappeared. B.Declined. C.Fought. D.Wandered.
29.What did the researchers discover about California grizzly bears

B.Their diet consisted mostly of plants.
C.They ate a balanced diet of plants and meat.

30.What can we learn about historical accounts of animals from the last paragraph
A.They are unique. B.They are one-sided.
C.They are accurate. D.They are comprehensive.
31.What is the text mainly about
A.The natural habitats of California grizzly bears.
B.The extinction process of California grizzly bears.
C.The reveal of the truth of California grizzly bears.
D.The significance of the arrival of California grizzly bears.

Lapland's reindeer (驯鹿) grow well in winters of -30℃ and even colder. So when rain falls instead of snow during the coldest months in the Arctic,it makes food hard to get for them. Now one of the best-loved symbols of Christmas is probably dying out. Numbers have fallen by over half in the last two decades as the place warms at four times the global average rate.
The animals are used to pull sleigh (雪橇) rides for tourists. The rides are part of Lapland winter wonderland experiences in thousands of British tourists each year. But this year the working herd had to be moved 60 miles further north due to the absence of snow. As a result, they can't be provided in some areas, making it hard for people to earn a living.
Lapland is often described as Europe's last great wilderness, home to lynxes, brown bears, wolverines and golden eagles. Tourism is a big part of the economy, and the town of Rovaniemi is also the "official home of Santa Claus". But changing climate (气候) is threatening its tourism industry. A report by The Finnish Climate Change Panel warns of flooding and increased rainfall, with Rovaniemi most at risk. Firms that rely on snow "will have great effects on visit levels" and these industries may be forced further north.
Erkkila of the Arctic Husky Park in Rovaniemi says: "Tourists see pictures of the Santa Claus village covered in snow and when they get here they think, 'Is this the winter wonderland '." The Husky Park bought a wheeled cart (车) six years ago as a replacement for sleigh rides when the snow fails.
In the past it was thought the Arctic was warming twice as fast as the rest of the world. But a report published last week by scientists showed the rate is actually four times the global average.
32.What causes the drop in Lapland's reindeer population
A.Cold winter. B.Polluted habitats.
C.Heavy snow. D.Rising temperatures.
33.What does the underlined word "they" in paragraph 2 refer to
A.Rides. B.Animals. C.Experiences. D.Tourists.
34.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A.Lapland is home to various wildlife.
B.Increased rainfall threatens Rovaniemi.
C.Rovaniemi is official home of Santa Claus.
D.Changing climate affects Lapland's tourism.
35.What does Erkkila say about tourists to Rovaniemi
A.They feel excited. B.They are disappointed.
C.They enjoy themselves. D.They prefer wheeled carts.
Ambitious people in the business community strongly desire accomplishments and are willing to take more risks and spend more efforts to get them. Overall, this is a positive quality, especially for people trying to build their own businesses. 36
Actually, this isn’t always the case. 37 One major side effect of extreme ambition is the tendency to focus too much on an end goal to adapt to new circumstances. If a new competitor emerges to threaten your business, you may need to change direction, even if that means getting away from your original vision. If you have too much ambition, you’ll find this hard, if not impossible.
Few people are successful when they try to build their first brand. Unfortunately, for the most ambitious businessmen, a failure is seen as disastrous .and impossible to recover from. 38 Remember: failure is unavoidable and every failure you survive is a learning experience.
39 However, they’re only slightly happier than their non-ambitious peers, and tend to live significantly shorter lives. This implies that even though ambitious people are more likely to achieve conventional “success”, such success means nothing for their health and happiness.
Clearly, some amount of ambition is good for your motivation. 40 But too much ambition can also be dangerous, putting you at risk of burnout, stubbornness and even a shorter life.
A.It’s a clear departure from the intended plan toward the intended goal.
B.Ambitious people take health and happiness for granted if they don’t have them.
C.In fact, in some cases, extreme ambition may end up doing more harm than good.
D.Ambitious people tend to be more successful in wealth than their non-ambitious peers.
E.Apparently, if you’re more naturally driven to set goals, you are more likely to succeed.
F.For people with limited ambition, however, failure is viewed as something closer to reality.
G.Without any ambition, you wouldn’t start your own business, set or achieve goals and get far in life.

As a writer, I miss rejection slips. Not that I enjoyed receiving those pre-printed slips of paper, but at least when I got one, I was pretty sure that a flesh-and-blood 41 had put it in the envelope. And there was always the chance I might see a handwritten sentence on the bottom, 42 the piece almost made it. When an editor at McCall’s wrote, “I’m afraid I have to say no on this 43 piece, but try me again on another, would you ” It was almost as 44 to me as if she had said, “We’ll 45 it and here is an advance for you”.
Nowadays, rejection slips seem to have disappeared with the use of online submissions. Most editors don’t feel it a must to 46 they have received, read, or considered your work because they receive so many 47 each day.
For me, there are three 48 of rejection slip pain. The first is 49 brought on by finding a flat “no” on a 50 piece of paper, then followed by anger (how could they 51 a piece that is obviously so much 52 than most of the stuff they print), and, finally, rebirth: I will live to 53 a new piece another day.
Learning to 54 rejection seems like part of growing up as a writer. Despite the many letters of acceptance I have received, my folder of “Noteworthy Rejection Slips” is far 55 than that of “Noteworthy Acceptances”, which indicates to me the fact: I still have some growing up to do.

Hiking the Longji Rice Terraces (梯田) in southern China is something I would recommend for everyone to add to their bucket list. During my visit to Guilin, I decided to set out on a three-day hike through the famous Longji Rice Terraces. Known as the “Dragon’s Backbone”, the terraces were a spectacular sight as they stretched across the green hills in complicated 58 (pattern) looking like ripples of water.
The hike 59 (take) me through small villages set against the beautiful landscape. Local farmers were busy tending to the terraced rice fields that had been farmed for over 1,000 years. Along the paths, I passed orange groves and met friendly locals 60 offered me fresh lychees.
At night, I stayed in simple homestays run by farming families. Over multicourse meals 61 (feature) local specialties like sticky rice, I learned 62 (much) about the terraces and village life. The feeling of community spirit and connection to the natural environment was unique.

Jay, 24, got home from work shortly after midnight. Then, suddenly, a horror-filled scream ripped through the still night. He rushed outside and saw flames lighting the sky half a mile away. Hurriedly, he called the fire department and rushed out to check the situation.
Seconds later, Jay was fishtailing his car on the main road. The fire raged at a small hillside complex of mobile homes. Jay slid the car to a stop and sprinted up a steep lane toward the reddening glow. Reaching the hilltop, he saw that a 70-foot-long trailer (房车) was on fire. A young woman in torn nightclothes was running wildly back and forth, jumping to smash at the 6-foot-high windows with her hands. “Dear God!” she screamed. “My family is dying!”
Jay felt a moment of panic. He seemed to be the only person there to help. Never had he seen such a fire! Flames were leaping out of broken windows at the far end of the trailer and winding along the roof; the roaring, crackling noises grew louder by the second. He grabbed the woman by the shoulders. “What happened ” he shouted.
Barely coherent, Cindy told him she had escaped through one of the master bedroom windows. Her husband, Leonard, had gone for their two children: 22-month-old Ryan and 6-week-old Angela. He was supposed to hand them out to her from the bedroom. But, seconds later, flames had burst from the kitchen and living room windows. Cindy began crying miserably. “Where are they ” Jay yelled. Cindy pointed to the end section of the trailer, where thick, black smoke poured from the windows.
From the time he was old enough to play sports, Jay had learned to battle the odds. As a Little Leaguer, he led his underdog team to the state championship. And in tiny St. Maries, his courage had earned him townspeople’s respect. Always, Jay recalled the words of his father: “The word can’t never did anything for anybody. You can do it! Never stop trying, son!”
注意:
Para. 1 Jay’s father’s words echoed in his mind.

M: Oh, really, thanks for the information.

W: Albert Bierstadt was born on January seventh1830 in Prussia, Germany. His family moved to new Bedford, Massachusetts, the US when Albert was just one year old. Little is known about his early life, but his skill at drawing LED him to become an art teacher at age twenty. Then in 1853 he went to Germany, studying with experienced artists and drawing across Germany, Switzerland and Italy. For four years, he grew up as an artist. Once back in new Bedford, he began to exhibit his European works, gaining recognition for his use of light and color that produced peaceful and gentle landscapes. For the next several decades, Albert took his place as one.
Of the nation’s most honored landscape artists, his paintings of tropical environments are generally considered to be of equal quality to his paintings of the American west. In his later years, he spent part of every year in the Bahamas, where his wife had moved for medical reasons.

A.They mainly fed on livestock.
B.Their diet consisted mostly of plants.
C.They ate a balanced diet of plants and meat.
D.The absence of livestock changed their dietary habit.
根据划线词下句“But European settlers often hunted, poisoned and trapped the creatures. Over time, because of these human activities, the California grizzly population declined.(但欧洲殖民者经常猎杀、毒死和诱捕这些生物。随着时间的推移,由于这些人类活动,加州灰熊的数量下降了)”可知,加州灰熊曾经数量很多,随处游荡。由此猜测roamed意为“游荡”,与wandered同义。故选D。
29.细节理解题。根据第二段中“In addition, analyses of the animals’ bones and skins suggest the bears were primarily eating plants, which stands in contrast to their fear some hyper carnivorous (超级食肉的) reputation.(此外,对动物骨骼和皮肤的分析表明,熊主要以植物为食,这与它们可怕的超级食肉动物的名声形成了对比)”可知,研究发现灰熊主要以植物为食。故选B。
根据最后一段“By digging beyond the bears’ reputation, the researchers gained a more accurate understanding of the California grizzly’s biology and natural history. And since scientists and land managers often rely on historical accounts when reintroducing animals to their former habitats, the study serves as a reminder that those old newspapers and journals do not tell the whole story.(通过深入研究灰熊的名声,研究人员对加州灰熊的生物学和自然历史有了更准确的了解。由于科学家和土地管理者在将动物重新引入它们以前的栖息地时经常依赖于历史记录,这项研究提醒人们,那些旧报纸和期刊并没有讲述整个故事)”推知,对动物的历史纪录有可能是片面的,并不完整和准确。故选B。
31.主旨大意题。通读全文,并结合第一段中“Historical accounts often described the now-extinct California grizzly bears as huge beasts ready to attack humans and livestock at any time. But according to a new paper, scientists say the truth might have been less dramatic: The bears ate a mostly vegetarian diet and were smaller than previously described.(历史记载经常将现已灭绝的加利福尼亚灰熊描述为随时准备攻击人类和牲畜的巨大野兽。但根据一篇新的论文,科学家们说真相可能没有那么戏剧性:这些熊主要吃素食,比之前描述的要小)”可知,文章主要介绍研究揭示了一些关于加州灰熊的真相——主要吃素食,比之前描述的要小。故选C。

【答案】32.D 33.A 34.D 35.B
根据第一段“Numbers have fallen by over half in the last two decades as the place warms at four times the global average rate.(因为这个地方以全球平均水平的4倍的速度在变暖和,所以在过去的20年里,数量已经下降了一半多。)”
根据第二段“The animals are used to pull sleigh(雪橇)rides for tourists. The rides are part of Lapland winter wonderland experiences in thousands of British tourists each year. But this year the working herd had to be moved 60 miles further north due to the absence of snow. As a result, they can't be provided in some areas, making it hard for people to earn a living.(这些动物们被用来为游客拉雪橇。每年,拉雪橇都是拉普兰冬季仙境数千名欧洲游客吗经历的一部分。但是,今年这些工作畜群不得不因为雪的缺失而向北搬迁60英里。因此,在一些区域,它们就不能被提供,进而导致人们很难挣到钱了。)” 可知,因为驯鹿走了,所以拉雪橇的活动没有了,所以人们才挣不到钱了,所以they是指拉雪橇的体验。故选A。
根据第三段“But changing climate(气候)is threatening its tourism industry.(但是变化的气候正在威胁它的旅游业。)”
根据第四段“Tourists see pictures of the Santa Claus village covered in snow and when they get here they think, 'Is this the winter wonderland '.(游客们看到圣诞老人村覆盖在雪里的照片,然后,当他们到这的时候,他们会想“这就是冬季仙境?”)”
36.根据上文“Ambitious people in the business community strongly desire accomplishments and are willing to take more risks and spend more efforts to get them. Overall, this is a positive quality, especially for people trying to build their own businesses.(在商界,雄心勃勃的人强烈渴望成就,愿意承担更多的风险,付出更多的努力来获得成就。总的来说,这是一种积极的品质,尤其是对那些试图建立自己的企业的人来说)”可知,上文提到有抱负的人渴望成功,本句为本段最后一句,故总结这些人能取得成功的特质。故E选项“显然,如果你更自然地去设定目标,你就更有可能成功”符合语境,故选E。
37.根据上文“Actually, this isn’t always the case.(事实上,情况并非总是如此)”以及后文“One major side effect of extreme ambition is the tendency to focus too much on an end goal to adapt to new circumstances. If a new competitor emerges to threaten your business, you may need to change direction, even if that means getting away from your original vision. If you have too much ambition, you’ll find this hard, if not impossible.(极端野心的一个主要副作用是倾向于过分关注最终目标而不去适应新环境。如果一个新的竞争对手出现威胁到你的业务,你可能需要改变方向,即使这意味着要离开你最初的愿景。如果你野心太大,你会发现这很难,如果不是不可能的话)”可知,后文提到了极端野心的弊端,故主要是说明极端野心的缺点。故C选项“事实上,在某些情况下,极端的野心可能最终弊大于利”符合语境,故选C。
38.根据上文“Few people are successful when they try to build their first brand. Unfortunately, for the most ambitious businessmen, a failure is seen as disastrous .and impossible to recover from.(很少有人在尝试建立自己的第一个品牌时取得成功。不幸的是,对于大多数雄心勃勃的商人来说,失败被视为灾难性的,而且无法恢复)”以及后文“Remember: failure is unavoidable and every failure you survive is a learning experience.(记住:失败是不可避免的,每一次失败都是一次学习的经历)”可知,本句与上文构成转折,指出失败对有抱负的人的消极影响。故F选项“然而,对于野心有限的人来说,失败被视为更接近现实的事情”符合语境,故选F。
39.根据后文“However, they’re only slightly happier than their non-ambitious peers, and tend to live significantly shorter lives. This implies that even though ambitious people are more likely to achieve conventional “success”, such success means nothing for their health and happiness.(然而,他们只比没有野心的同龄人稍微快乐一点,而且往往寿命短得多。这意味着,尽管雄心勃勃的人更有可能获得传统意义上的“成功”,但这种成功对他们的健康和幸福毫无意义)”可知,后文与本句构成转折,推测本句是在说明有野心的人成功的方面,后文则指出失败的方面。故D选项“有野心的人往往比没有野心的人在财富方面更成功”符合语境,故选D。
40.根据上文“Clearly, some amount of ambition is good for your motivation.(显然,一定程度的野心对你的动力是有好处的)”以及后文“But too much ambition can also be dangerous, putting you at risk of burnout, stubbornness and even a shorter life.(但野心太大也可能是危险的,它会让你精疲力竭、变得固执,甚至寿命更短)”可知,本句承接上文,说明一定程度野心的具体好处。

How to Spend Time Properly
Time is more precious than any possessions. It is equal to everyone. How you spend that valuable time determines the quality of your life.
There are three rules for effective time management. Firstly, don’t try to work full-time and take a full load. Be reasonable about how much work you can do. Secondly, make a list of all the things that you need to get done in a given time. Put the tasks in order of importance and delete any unimportant items. Thirdly, avoid lack of focus. Personal phone calls and emails can easily disturb your workday progress.
Let’s make good use of time to make our life colorful and meaningful.

“I’m not coming out without them!” After a quick assessment, Jay identified a potential entrance. Determined and focused, he arched his body, leaping through a shattered bedroom window. Despite the engulfing darkness and choking smoke, Jay fumbled, yelled and finally located the two babies by tracing their faint cries. Quickly, he swept them up and passed them outside to Cindy. Suffocated as he was, he summoned the last bit of his strength, and reached for the father, who was lying unconscious on the floor. Just at this critical moment, additional help began to arrive. Together with the firefighters, Jay successfully pulled the man to safety.
Para. 2 As her husband was placed in the ambulance to be driven to the hospital, Cindy walked over to Jay. Overwhelmed with exhaustion, Jay collapsed to the ground, his face smeared with dirt and blood. Despite great pain and fatigue, he managed a faint smile as Cindy embraced him, pouring her heartfelt thanks through tear-brimmed eyes. Together, they were swiftly rushed to the hospital for a comprehensive medical check. Fortunately, everyone was safe. News of Jay’s heroic actions went viral, earning him the title of ultimate hero in the local newspaper. Faced with flooding praise, Jay remained humble, crediting his actions to the values instilled by his father—a belief that as long as he persevered, he could overcome any adversity.
