This weekend’s Los Angeles Times Festival of Books is the nation’s largest literary festival. Here are 4 Quick Picks.
If you enjoy our community book club—The L. A.Times Book Club, you can come to Norris Theatre for a meeting with novelist and screenwriter Gabrielle Zevin at 1:45 pm. She’ll be on stage with Times editor Samantha Melbourneweaver discussing “Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow”. The festival is Zevin’s first L. A.appearance since the novel came out last summer.
If you love mysteries, you can come to Bovard Auditorium at 12:30 pm. Michael Connelly was a reporter working in Florida and Southern California when he began writing stories inspired by his daily job. Three dozen novels, and multiple TV series later, Connelly remains a festival (and L. A.Times Book Club) favorite. He’ll be in conversation today with another writing legend: James Ellroy.
If you like a juicy book-to-screen adaptation, you can come to the L. A.Times Main Stage at 12:50 pm. Last summer everyone was talking about “The Last Thing He Told Me”. Its author Laura Dave tells us a story about a California woman desperately trying to find her missing husband after he leaves behind a troubling note. Today Laura Dave will be in conversation with Times TV critic Lorraine Ali.
If you love children’s literature, you can come to Town and Gown at noon. Beloved children’s authors Kate DiCamillo and Lois Lowry will be talking about their careers and middle-grade fiction. DiCamillo, the author of “Because of Winn-Dixie”, is a two-time Newbery Medalist. Lowry has written more than 40 books and has been awarded the Newber y Medal twice, too.

Often people receive a guitar, mandolin, or some other musical instrument as a birthday or Christmas gift. There’s joy everywhere. The giver of the gift knows how much the receiver wants to learn this instrument and the receiver is actually holding it in his hands instead of longing for it through the shop window.
Finding an instructor that fits into a busy work schedule is hard enough, but once you decide on a lesson plan, then you must consider the practice time, how to practice, what to practice — and let’s face it — not all people learn something the same way. So in order to learn a musical instrument, how much practice time is enough and what kind of practice is right for you
There is no set amount of time that anyone should practice a musical instrument. When I was in programming classes, I could have studied nightly for 5 hours each night. It would have taken me years to learn the art of computer programming. Though I’m attracted by the systematic logic of it, my talent is towards another thing. However, on the other hand, if I spent an hour every couple days with a passionate (充满热情的) hobby like playing the violin, not only would the time fly quickly, I’d also be learning at a much greater speed since the built-in passion is the motivation for advancement.
So as much as it’s important to practice, a step back is to first find the harmonious instrument that fits you as a person as development of your personality. If you’re learning the guitar because it’s cool — obviously that’s the modern-day mindset, however, you might not be actually linking your talent for musical satisfaction with your most creative advantages you have to offer.
It’s been my experience that every person has a certain level of musical talent. My enjoyable challenge has been to assist them in this adventure and actually locate their best abilities as quickly as possible. Then and only then can we match learners with instruments and truly begin a fun and exciting walk down the road of happiness and contentment, where music, ability, personality and soul all meet. Once this piece of the mystery puzzle is in place, I’ve never had to work at motivating a learner to practice.
24.In the author’s opinion, which of the following is the most important when learning a music instrument
A.The amount of time for practice. B.A scientific learning method.
C.A good music instructor. D.The strong fondness for music.
25.According to the author, a learner should choose to learn a music instrument which ________.
A.is received as a birthday or Christmas gift
B.follows a modern fashion in music training
C.is easy to learn and fits the learner very much
D.contributes to developing the learner’s character
26.What do we know about the author
A.She writes pop music. B.She’s a music instructor.
C.She advertises for music lesson. D.She’s a music instrument collector.
27.Which of these questions does the passage answer
A.Does practice make perfect B.Does talent make a difference
C.Does a lesson plan really fit you D.Does hard work make up for lack of talent
C
When Hurricane Ian made landfall on the southwest Florida coast as a Category 4 storm, it brought strong winds and heavy rain. It was a deadly hurricane, attacking more than four million people, and causing serious flooding and at least 150 deaths. However, during the disaster, there was one innovative community that weathered the storm well: Babcock Ranch, the brainchild of Syd Kitson.
Located 30 miles inland, Babcock Ranch is an environmentally friendly and fully sustainable town that Syd Kitson and his partners hoped would be hurricane proof. Its homes are built to go through severe weather without losing essential services like electricity, water, or the Internet. A significant factor in its design is that power and. Internet lines are buried to avoid wind damage. Additionally, large ponds surround the development to protect houses from flooding. As a backup, streets are designed to absorb floodwaters and spare the houses.
Central to Babcock Ranch’s sustainability is its extensive use of solar energy. The community possesses an 870-acre solar farm with 700,000 individual panels operated by Florida Power & Light, capable of powering 30,000 homes — far more than the 5,000 residents currently living there. At night and on cloudy days, a natural gas generator kicks in to fill the gap.
Hurricane Ian served as a true test for the community. While the surrounding regions suffered, Babcock Ranch’s minimum damage and quick recovery showcased its effective design against natural disasters. Residents even opened their community center, doubling as a storm shelter, to the victims from other hard-hit communities.
Kitson’s vision for Babcock Ranch is not just about creating a sustainable and resilient (适应性强的) community but also about learning and improving. He hopes that the lessons learned from Babcock Ranch can be applied to other developments, contributing to more climate-resilient communities across the United States. This approach reflects a growing awareness of the need for sustainable and resilient urban planning in the face of increasing climate challenges.
28.What does the underlined word “weathered” in paragraph 1 mean
A.Predicted. B.Changed. C.Ignored. D.Survived.
29.What do we know about Babcock Ranch from the text
A.Its streets allow houses the capability to take in floodwaters.
B.Its design guarantees availability of power in the hurricane.
C.Its solar farm lacks the ability of producing sufficient power.
D.Its main source of electricity supply is provided by natural gas.
30.What is the central theme of the fourth paragraph
A.Babcock Ranch’s community and social life.

C.Babcock Ranch’s resistance to natural disasters.
D.Babcock Ranch’s novel technological innovations.
31.How does Kitson find the future of Babcock Ranch

In a bid to reduce global electronic waste, Fairphone has created a smartphone that owners can repair themselves. What makes its technology so sustainable
“This is my phone’s camera,” says Bas van Abel, co-founder of the Fairphone, holding a small, square component aloft. He has just removed it from his smartphone, using a tiny screwdriver.
“There are eight components in total which can be removed and replaced,” he says, as he carefully disassembles his entire smartphone, placing the camera alongside his phone battery, USB port, screen and loudspeaker.
Founded in 2013 in Amsterdam, Fairphone makes Android smartphones which can easily be exchanged, customized and repaired by their owners. By enabling and encouraging people to fix their phones, rather than throwing them away as soon as a component breaks, Fairphone hopes to help reduce electronic waste.
In 2022, 5.3 billion mobile phones were thrown away, the Belgian non-profit The WEEE Forum, which analyses electronic waste, estimates. In the US, people replace their phones every 18 months on average as new models with upgraded features are released. Most devices now come as sealed units that are extremely difficult and expensive to repair, or even produce error messages if damaged components are fixed.
Fairphone wants to break this trend by selling phones that have a longer working life.
Despite its ambition, Fairphone is still only a minor player in the mobile phone market ——since launching, it has sold around 550,000 devices. To put this into context, more than 232 million iPhones were sold worldwide in 2022. But van Abel says Fairphone is trying to prove that it is possible for companies to turn a profit selling sustainable smartphones.
Sustainability, however, comes with a high price tag. The latest Fairphone model costs 649. This is partly because Fairphone has to build everything in-house, according to van Abel. “We do all the software updates ourselves as there’s not one company in the world that supports long-lasting phones,” he says. “There’s a lot of investment needed for us to be able to do what we want to.”
32.What do we know about van Abel
A.He was quite skillful in repairing mobile phones.
B.He created a smartphone that can repair itself.
C.He was satisfied with this sustainable smartphone.
D.He advocated recycling electronic products.
33.Why did Americans always change their phones
A.Because the functions of the phones needed to be upgraded.
B.Because old phones were not environmentally friendly.
C.Because they didn’t like using second-hand phones.
D.Because the data in the phones showed errors.
34.What can we infer about Fairphone
A.Its various products were deeply loved by consumers.
B.Its sales profit was higher than that of iPhone.
C.It required financial and technical support.
D.It encouraged people to purchase high-capacity smartphones.
35.What can be concluded from Fairphone’s development
A.Everything’s hard in the beginning.
B.No pains, no gains.
C.Love me, love my dog.
D.Kill two birds with one stone.

Whenever I spread marmalade (橘子酱), I am reminded of my mother, a five-foot-tall angel who even befriended a skunk (臭鼬).
One day, while she was busy picking beans in the backyard, she came across a skunk no more than a meter away. The skunk’s embarrassment was evident as he had undoubtedly been rummaging (乱翻) through the garbage. He still had a marmalade jar stuck on his nose. Mom took pity on him. Instead of worrying the creature would spray something smelly all over her and the beans, she smiled compassionately at the little thing and extended a helping hand. Kneeling on the ground, she inched across the grass, reached out, and twisted the jar—very carefully.
The jar slipped off. The skunk nodded a thank-you before slipping away into the woods at the back of the garden. Obviously, there was no spraying incident, thanks to my remarkable mother. She repeated this tale numerous times, always calling the skunk Marmalade. However, that was not the end of the story. Three summers later, when I was about twelve, another encounter occurred.
It was a rainy morning, and both my mother and father had gone to work. My friend Rob came over to play, and we decided to run the electric train in my room. Suddenly, a scratching sound emerged from the attic (阁楼). Rob assumed that it might be some kind of animal. Curiosity got the better of us, and we ventured towards the source of the sound.
I cautiously opened the attic door in the hall. The noise ceased abruptly. I climbed up the stairs, Rob following my lead. There behind the toy box near the chimney stood the animal—black with a distinct white stripe down his back. Was he scared and trembling I believe so, at least that’s what I remember. Instinctively, I retreated, fearing the potential spray or bites from the creature. “Hey, Rob,” I whispered urgently, “It’s a skunk. Let’s go to the kitchen and figure out a way to get him out of here.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

Paragraph 1:
In the cupboard, several paper cups and a jar of marmalade caught our sight.

Rob and I followed the skunk as he ate his way down the stairs.

16.What’s advised to be added to the presentation by the man
A.Diagrams. B.Statistics. C.Photos.
【答案】13.B 14.B 15.A 16.C
W: OK, so our topic for the presentation is bees. How many main points do we have
M: Three.
W: There’s a lot of information, but we only have eight minutes.
M: I think we can organize the whole presentation around our three main points.
W: Should we start by showing that bees are an important natural resource They help plants reproduce. Without bees, a lot of crops would be more expensive to grow.
M: Let’s make that clear so people understand why we all need bees.
W: Now, I found a report that says a lot of bees are dying right now. The report has a lot of statistics about population numbers. Should we use that
M: Well, I’m worried those statistics might be confusing. Mr. Lee said we have to make our presentation brief and to the point, and that’s important for our grades.
W: OK. Maybe we could just put some of the statistics in a diagram.
M: Let’s do that. And we could show some photos of bees.
W: Good idea.
M: So for the last part, we could make a list of what people can do to help bees.

【答案】17.B 18.A 19.A 20.C
M: Today I’d like to talk about my job. I work for the organization Life Plus. We work with a variety of animals. Now I’ll tell you something about the monkeys in our care. The most impressive character is Simba and he is the most powerful male in our group. Simba means “lion” in Swahili and we gave him this name because he is larger than other monkeys. He is often the first of the group to comfort others when they’re sick. One of the loveliest monkeys is Linda. She is not that easy to find or see, because she is afraid of visitors and will disappear into her house if someone approaches her. The opposite of Linda is Jojo. She enjoys having tourists close by. Our largest female is Leila, but now we’re a little worried about her. She is going to give birth, but now she has got a serious cold. So she’s gone out of sight for a couple of weeks. We’re expecting everything to be alright. A lot of people’s favourite is Tom. He’s always full of energy and he’s always playing with others and climbing and running. He really needs to sleep well at night, so that he can continue his crazy lifestyle during the day. That’s all. I really like spending time with animals.

21.Which best suits people who arrive at the festival at 1:30 pm
A.Norris Theatre. B.Bovard Auditorium.
C.The L. A.Times Main Stage. D.Town and Gown.
22.What do we know about Michael Connelly
A.He has retired to write at home. B.His novels come from his real life.
C.He has lost popularity with readers. D.His novels fail to be made into a film.
23.What do these four Quick Picks have in common
A.All the authors involved have won awards. B.It’s hard for readers to get tickets.

【答案】21.A 22.B 23.C
根据第二段“If you enjoy our community book club—The L. A. Times Book Club, you can come to Norris Theatre for a meeting with novelist and screenwriter Gabrielle Zevin at 1:45 pm.(如果你喜欢我们的社区读书俱乐部——洛杉矶时报读书俱乐部,你可以在下午1:45来诺里斯剧院和小说家兼编剧加布里埃尔·泽文见面)”可知,如果人们下午1:30到达现场,最适合去的是Norris Theatre。故选A。
根据第三段“Michael Connelly was a reporter working in Florida and Southern California when he began writing stories inspired by his daily job.(迈克尔·康纳利是一名记者,在佛罗里达州和南加州工作,他从日常工作中获得灵感,开始写故事)”可知,Michael Connelly的小说取材于他的真实生活。故选B。
根据第二段“She’ll be on stage with Times editor Samantha Melbourneweaver(她将与《泰晤士报》编辑萨曼莎·墨尔本韦弗同台)”,第三段的“He’ll be in conversation today with another writing legend: James Ellroy.(今天他将与另一位传奇作家詹姆斯·埃尔罗伊进行对话)”;第四段的“Today Laura Dave will be in conversation with Times TV critic Lorraine Ali.(今天劳拉·戴夫将与时代电视评论家洛林·阿里进行对话)”和最后一段的“Kate DiCamillo and Lois Lowry will be talking about their careers and middle-grade fiction(凯特·迪卡米洛和洛伊丝·洛瑞将谈论她们的事业和中级小说)”可知,四个选择的共同之处在于都将有两个人在台上交谈。故选C。

【答案】24.D 25.D 26.B 27.A
根据第三段中“When I was in programming classes, I could have studied nightly for 5 hours each night. It would have taken me years to learn the art of computer programming. Though I’m attracted by the systematic logic of it, my talent is towards another thing. However, on the other hand, if I spent an hour every couple days with a passionate (充满热情的) hobby like playing the violin, not only would the time fly quickly, I’d also be learning at a much greater speed since the built-in passion is the motivation for advancement.(当我在上编程课的时候,我可以每晚学习5个小时。
根据第三段中“If you’re learning the guitar because it’s cool — obviously that’s the modern-day mindset, however, you might not be actually linking your talent for musical satisfaction with your most creative advantages you have to offer.(如果你学吉他是因为它很酷——显然这是现代人的心态,然而,你可能没有把你在音乐上的天赋和你所能提供的最具创造性的优势联系起来)”和最后一段中“My enjoyable challenge has been to assist them in this adventure and actually locate their best abilities as quickly as possible. Then and only then can we match learners with instruments and truly begin a fun and exciting walk down the road of happiness and contentment, where music, ability, personality and soul all meet.(我喜欢的挑战是在这次冒险中帮助他们,并尽快找到他们的最佳能力。那时,也只有那时,我们才能为学习者配上乐器,真正开始一段充满乐趣和刺激的快乐和满足之路,在那里,音乐、能力、个性和灵魂都满足了)”可推知,作者认为选择乐器不能追逐现代潮流,要选择切合自己音乐天赋和创造力,能让自己能力、个性和灵魂都得益的乐器,即有助于培养学习者的品质的乐器。故选D项。
26.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“ It’s been my experience that every person has a certain level of musical talent. My enjoyable challenge has been to assist them in this adventure and actually locate their best abilities as quickly as possible.(根据我的经验,每个人都有一定程度的音乐天赋。我喜欢的挑战是在这次冒险中帮助他们,并尽快找到他们的最佳能力。)”可知,作者是一个音乐教师。故答案为B项。
27.推理判断题。通读全文可知,第二段中“So in order to learn a musical instrument, how much practice time is enough and what kind of practice is right for you (那么为了学习一种乐器,练习多少时间是足够的,什么样的练习适合你呢 )”提出问题:学习一种乐器该练习多久或者什么样的练习才适合,但结合第三段中“When I was in programming classes, I could have studied nightly for 5 hours each night. It would have taken me years to learn the art of computer programming. Though I’m attracted by the systematic logic of it, my talent is towards another thing. However, on the other hand, if I spent an hour every couple days with a passionate (充满热情的) hobby like playing the violin, not only would the time fly quickly, I’d also be learning at a much greater speed since the built-in passion is the motivation for advancement.(当我在上编程课的时候,我可以每晚学习5个小时。 故选A项。

B.Babcock Ranch’s future expansion strategies.

This is partly because Fairphone has to build everything in-house, according to van Abel. “We do all the software updates ourselves as there’s not one company in the world that supports long-lasting phones,” he says. “There’s a lot of investment needed for us to be able to do what we want to.”(最新款Fairphone售价649英镑。范阿贝尔表示,部分原因是Fairphone必须在内部完成所有工作。他说:“我们自己做所有的软件更新,因为世界上没有一家公司支持耐用手机。”“我们需要大量投资,才能做我们想做的事情。”)”可知,Fairphone需要财政和技术支持。故选C。
35.推理判断题。由文章倒数第二段中“Despite its ambition, Fairphone is still only a minor player in the mobile phone market ——since launching, it has sold around 550,000 devices. To put this into context, more than 232 million iPhones were sold worldwide in 2022. But van Abel says Fairphone is trying to prove that it is possible for companies to turn a profit selling sustainable smartphones. 64.考查过去分词。句意:29岁的董良燕(音译)来自距离天水2000多公里的黑龙江大庆,她告诉新华社记者,她非常高兴能品尝到当地美食。使用过去分词作定语修饰“Heilongjiang province”,表示“位于,坐落在”,故填located。

An Amazing Chinese Festival
One of my favorite Chinese traditional festivals is the Mid-Autumn Festival. It is celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar when the moon is at its fullest and brightest.
This festival has a rich history spanning over 3,000 years. Chinese people worshiped the moon to give thanks for the harvest and to encourage the “harvest-giving light” to return in the coming year. Nowadays, the full moon is a symbol of family reunions. Families gather to admire the full moon while enjoying tasty mooncakes whose round shape and sweet flavor symbolize completeness and sweetness.
The Mid-Autumn Festival holds deep cultural significance in Chinese tradition. It symbolizes unity and harmony within families, much like how the full moon brings everyone together under its light.

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

Paragraph 2:

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1: In the cupboard, several paper cups and a jar of marmalade caught our sight. I reached for the jar, remembering my mother’s encounter with the skunk years ago. Could it be that this was indeed Marmalade, returning to our home in search of a familiar treat Hurriedly, I dumped a teaspoon of marmalade into each paper cup, hoping to lure the skunk out of the attic. Hearts pounding in anticipation, we set one cup on the back porch, one just inside the back door, and one every few feet all the way up to the attic. The skunk seemed intrigued, slowly creeping towards the first cup. His nose twitched, and then he began to lick the sweet treat.
Paragraph 2: Rob and I followed the skunk as he ate his way down the stairs. He seemed to have grown accustomed to our presence, no longer trembling, and even appeared to enjoy the treat. As he finished gobbling the last bit of the marmalade, he turned and looked at us, those big brown eyes seemingly showing his gratitude. Without another scratch or sign of aggression, he turned and gracefully made his way out of the house, disappearing into the rainy morning. We stood there, amazed and in complete awe of the remarkable encounter. Later, when I shared the story with my mother, she smiled and nodded, saying, “Yes, that’s Marmalade. He always knows where to find a warm heart and a jar of marmalade.”
