Lexi is just a little girl from Canada who found herself in a heart-stopping situation. It started off as a normal car trip. Angela Shymanski, Lexi’s mom, was at the wheel, navigating the tricky roads of the Rockies with her daughter Lexi and her baby Peter in the car. An unexpected animal ran into the road. Angela swerved (突然转向) to avoid the animal. Unfortunately, their car was off the road, falling down a steep embankment (路堤).
The crash was nothing short of terrifying. Angela ended up with a broken back. She was unconscious, and unable to help her babies. Meanwhile, baby Peter’s cries echoed in the chaos. But Lexi, only five years old, didn’t freeze. Instead, she showed courage that would leave many grown-ups in awe.
She quickly jumped into action. The little girl, without even shoes on her feet, wrestled free from her seatbelt and climbed the 40-foot embankment. Once she reached the top, Lexi did everything she could to flag down a passing car in order to get help for her mom and brother.
Lexi’s insistence finally paid off. A car stopped, and the people inside didn’t hesitate to help her call for emergency services. When the paramedics (护理人员) arrived, they found Angela in a severe state, and her heart had stopped. Thankfully, they managed to bring her back.
Lexi’s dad, reflecting on the incident, couldn’t help but be amazed by his daughter’s bravery. He stressed how important it is for kids to be prepared for emergencies, shocked at how Lexi remembered and acted on what she had been taught. It’s a powerful reminder of what kids can do when push comes to shove.
And Lexi’s heroism didn’t go unnoticed. She was awarded a Bronze Medal for Bravery by the police. But for the Shymanskis, the real prize was being back in each other’s arms, safe and sound.

27.Which of the following can best describe Lexi
A.Brave and honest. B.Calm and courageous.

With artificial intelligence (AI) and robotic technology improving at impressive rates, there are some who worry that there’s a risk of artistic and creative people being replaced. A new study by the Korean Institute of Industrial Technology, however, is showing exactly why that can’t and shouldn’t happen. It all started when the South Korean company posed this question: Can robots replace conductors
Over a year ago, work to develop automaton (自动化) began. At first, it was designed like a machine, and didn’t live up to expectations. Then the company sought ways to improve it. In the end, it was given two arms with joints to copy wrists and elbows, allowing it to move a stick similarly to how a human conductor would move it. It was named the EverR 6 robot, and stands at 1.8 meters. It was finally time to figure out how it could follow through on its musical role.
“We got involved in this project to see how far robots can go in more creative fields like the arts, and what the challenges are,” Dong-wook Lee, a senior researcher at the Korean Institute of Industrial Technology said.
In order to pull this off, Dong-wook Lee cooperated with the Busan Philharmonic Orchestra. The 12-minute piece they planned to perform, “Feel” by Il-hoon Son, was created specifically for this event. It was created with the strengths of both EverR 6 and the human conductor, Soo-yeol Choi, in mind.
To pull off this impressive performance, the robot was preprogrammed to conduct through 30 cycles of beat patterns. Meanwhile, it was up to the human conductor to lead the orchestra in creating an improvisational (即兴的) score, adding depth to the otherwise planned piece.
Together, they pulled off a masterful performance that the audience seemed more than happy to have had the opportunity to witness it firsthand!
With the concert having gone so well, this is only the start of EverR 6. Still, no matter the improvements they’re able to make to this Android robot, the human conductor isn’t concerned about being replaced.
“Let’s leave the accuracy to the robots,” Soo-yeol Choi said, “but the musical and artistic aspects to a human conductor.”
28.What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A.The function of the EverR 6 robot.
B.The development of the EverR 6 robot.
C.The EverR 6 robot’s role as a conductor.
D.The difficulty in designing the EverR 6 robot.
29.What can be learned about “Feel”
A.It is a piece familiar to the audience.
B.It is a piece showing the human-robot cooperation.
C.It is the only piece that EverR 6 will perform.
D.It is a piece requiring great ability to conduct.
30.What role did Soo-yeol Choi play in the performance
A.He corrected the robot’s mistakes.
B.He programmed the EverR 6 robot.
C.He led the improvisational section of the performance.
D.He was the main conductor of the Busan Philharmonic Orchestra.
31.What is Soo-yeol Choi’s attitude towards EverR 6
A.Unclear. B.Uncaring. C.Supportive. D.Doubtful.

A brain implant allowed people with head injuries to function again. The deep brain stimulation implant, developed by researchers at Stanford University, aims to boost activity between the regions responsible for consciousness learning, memory, thinking and problem solving.
During the early trial, five people with brain injuries reported they were able to concentrate, read, remember and drive properly. The trial proved so effective that researchers had trouble completing the final stage, which was to switch off the device for three random participants after two of the patients declined.
Gina Arata, a trial participant, said, “I couldn’t remember anything. My left foot dropped, so I’d trip over things all the time. I was always in car accidents. Since the implant, I haven’t had any speeding tickets. I don’t trip anymore. I can remember how much money is in my bank account.”
Researchers selected patients for the trial who had recovered from comas (昏迷) with brain systems believed to be still well preserved, but not functioning as well as previously. “In these patients, those pathways are largely complete, but everything has been down-regulated (下降),” said Dr Jaimie Henderson, a professor of neurosurgery. “It’s as if the lights had been darkened and there just wasn’t enough electricity to turn them back up.” The researchers hoped that precise electrical stimulation of specific areas could turn the “lights” back up, and created a virtual model of each participant’s brain so they could trial stimulation at different locations ahead of surgery.
Guided by the theory, Dr Henderson implanted the device in the five participants who had sustained injuries between three and 18 years earlier. After allowing the device to bed-in for two weeks, the participants spent 90 days with it turned on for 12 hours a day. At the end of the 90-day treatment period, the participants had improved their mental processing speeds by an average of 32 percent.
“This is a pioneering moment,” said Dr Nicholas Schiff, co-senior author of the study. “Our goal now is to try to take the systematic steps to make this a therapy (疗法). This is enough of a signal for us to make every effort.”
32.What made it hard to end the last stage of the trial
A.Researchers’ wrong solution to problems.
B.Participants’ refusal to turn off the device.
C.The decrease in the number of participants.
D.Patients’ unwillingness to pay for the trial.
33.Why does the author mention Gina Arata
A.To present the patient’s urgent need.
B.To warn about the dangers of speeding.
C.To prove the effectiveness of the device.
D.To show the difficulty of conducting trials.
34.What does the author intend to do by referring to the “lights” in paragraph 4
A.Prove a finding.
B.Explain a theory.
C.Draw a conclusion.
D.Present a new topic.
35.What do Dr Nicholas Schiff’s words suggest
A.The result of the trial is very encouraging.
B.He needs more evidence to support the trial.
C.The process of the trial is far from scientific.
D.The therapy has already been widely received.
You’re overwhelmed (压垮). That is a state where there is just too much on your plate. You have no idea how you will ever get it all done. 36 And it can lead to anxiety, unhealthy stress, and even burnout.
Here are three steps you can put into immediate action next time you feel overwhelmed.
Stop and breathe.
The first thing to do is stop. This may seem unreasonable when you hurry to get everything done. But to end the state of being overwhelmed, we first need to step out of the busyness. 37 And we end up running around and around in our own unproductiveness and panic. Start consciously breathing. As your breathing starts to slow, extend your breath. Bring your breath down deep into your stomach. Hold the inhale (吸气) for a few counts and then slowly release.
38
Stand up and get away from the situation that is causing the pressure and anxiety. It could be your desk, or your lounge room. If you can, go outside. If not, find a quiet space. You need to get some distance from the messiness. Walking away, even momentarily, often provides enough of a break to get some perspective. 39
Refocus.
After returning to your place, take a few moments to think about the situation. 40 As you do so, highlight the things that are adding fuel to your feeling of too much pressure. By taking the time to look at your priorities and time commitments, you will step out of the pressure, take care of your mental, emotional, and physical well-being, and give more energy to the tasks and projects that really matter.
A.Walk away.
B.Never stop moving forward.
C.Seek advice from people around you.
D.Then come back with a clearer mind.
E.Otherwise, it becomes a bad cycle.
F.It’s the feeling of being “in over your head”.
G.Write down all the things that are on your to-do list.

My childhood is magical and full of adventure. I have so many childhood memories, and I would like to share one that still stimulates me. This unforgettable childhood event was about the first day when I learned how to swim. It happened so unexpectedly and quickly that not only I but my parents were surprised. Of course, we were proud as well. I was barely seven years old back then, and my parents thought that it was time for me to learn how to swim. One summer morning, they took me to a swimming pool in the City Swimming Complex which was just a 35-minute drive from our house. It was a weekend and both my parents accompanied me. After we reached the Swimming Complex, we found many people were learning how to swim. My mother said she would watch me learn this important skill with the help of my father. Then she cheered me on and took a seat.
I had no idea how to swim but I was excited to try this new adventure. However, when my father got into the swimming pool with me, I became a bit nervous. It seemed that things were not quite as easy for me.
Looking around, I noticed that many other children of all ages were also trying to grasp this skill and some of them had pretty much learned the art and science of this skill. Influenced by others, I was determined to focus on my training and swim as well as them. Under the guidance of my father, I learned with all my effort and devotion, and I made rapid progress. After teaching me for 30 minutes or so, my father went to buy some snacks for us and my mother came to talk to me for a while near the pool. She asked me if I had learned anything at all. To prove my progress, I jumped into the water and started swimming.

D.Doubtful.
【答案】28.B 29.B 30.C 31.C

根据文章第二段“Over a year ago, work to develop automaton (自动化) began. At first, it was designed like a machine, and didn’t live up to expectations. Then the company sought ways to improve it. In the end, it was given two arms with joints to copy wrists and elbows, allowing it to move a stick similarly to how a human conductor would move it. It was named the EverR 6 robot, and stands at 1.8 meters.(一年多以前,开发自动化的工作开始了。起初,它被设计得像一台机器,并没有达到人们的期望。然后,该公司寻求改进方法。最后,它被赋予了两条带有关节的手臂来模仿手腕和肘部,使它能够像人类指挥一样移动一根棍子。它被命名为EverR 6机器人,身高1.8米)”可知,第二段主要讲述了EverR 6机器人的研发过程。故选B。
29.推理判断题。根据文章第四段“The 12-minute piece they planned to perform, “Feel” by Il-hoon Son, was created specifically for this event. It was created with the strengths of both EverR 6 and the human conductor, Soo-yeol Choi, in mind.(他们计划演奏的12分钟的曲目是孙一勋的《Feel》,这是专门为此次活动制作的。这首歌是在考虑到EverR 6和人类指挥家崔秀烈(Soo-yeol Choi)的长处后创作的)”可推知,“Feel”是一个展示人机合作的作品。故选B。
30.细节理解题。根据文章第五段“Meanwhile, it was up to the human conductor to lead the orchestra in creating an improvisational (即兴的) score, adding depth to the otherwise planned piece.(与此同时,由人类指挥来带领乐队创作即兴乐谱,为原本计划好的作品增加深度)”可知,他在表演中指挥演出的即兴部分。故选C。
根据文章最后一段““Let’s leave the accuracy to the robots,” Soo-yeol Choi said, “but the musical and artistic aspects to a human conductor.”(“让我们把精确度留给机器人吧,”崔秀烈(Soo-yeol Choi)说,“而把音乐和艺术方面的工作留给人类指挥。”)”

【答案】32.B 33.C 34.B 35.A
根据第二段“The trial proved so effective that researchers had trouble completing the final stage, which was to switch off the device for three random participants-after two of the patients declined.(试验证明是如此有效,以至于研究人员在完成最后阶段时遇到了困难,即在两名患者拒绝后,随机关闭三名参与者的设备。)”
根据第三段“I couldn’t remember anything. My left foot dropped, so I’d trip over things all the time. I was always in car accidents. Since the implant, I haven’t had any speeding tickets. I don’t trip anymore. I can remember how much money is in my bank account.(我什么都不记得了。我的左脚耷拉着,所以我总是被东西绊倒。我总是出车祸。植入手术后,我就没开过超速罚单了。我不再绊倒了。我能记得我的银行账户里有多少钱。)”可知,试验参与者Gina介绍了自己的病情和参与试验后的改善情况。由此可推断,作者举这个例子是为了说明这个植入脑中的设备是有用的。故选C。
34.推理判断题。根据第四段““In these patients, those pathways are largely complete, but everything has been down-regulated (下降),” said Dr Jaimie Henderson, a professor of neurosurgery. “It’s as if the lights had been darkened and there just wasn’t enough electricity to turn them back up.” The researchers hoped that precise electrical stimulation of specific areas could turn the “lights” back up,and created a virtual model of each participant’s brain so they could trial stimulation at different locations ahead of surgery.(神经外科教授Jaimie Henderson博士说:“在这些患者中,这些通路基本上是完整的,但一切都被下调了。”
根据最后一段“Our goal now is to try to take the systematic steps to make this a therapy (疗法). This is enough of a signal for us to make every effort.(我们现在的目标是尝试采取系统的步骤使其成为一种治疗方法。这是一个足够的信号,让我们尽一切努力。)”可推断,Dr Nicholas Schiff的话暗示了这个试验的结果十分鼓舞人心。故选A。
【答案】36.F 37.E 38.A 39.D 40.G
36.上文“That is a state where there is just too much on your plate. You have no idea how you will ever get it all done.(在这种状态下,你有很多事要忙。你不知道如何才能完成所有的工作)”描述了一种状态,F项“这是一种“不知所措”的感觉”总结上文,下文中的“it”指代F项中的“the feeling of being ‘in over your head’”,故选F。
37.上文“But to end the state of being overwhelmed, we first need to step out of the busyness.(但要结束这种不堪重负的状态,我们首先需要从忙碌中走出来)”提到,首先要从忙碌的状态中走出来,深呼吸,下文“And we end up running around and around in our own unproductiveness and panic.(我们最终会在自己的低效和恐慌中不停地跑来跑去)”是描述如果不这样做的后果,E项“否则,就会形成恶性循环”符合语境,故选E。
38.根据本段中“Stand up and get away from the situation that is causing the pressure and anxiety.(站起来,远离造成压力和焦虑的情况)”以及“If you can, go outside. If not, find a quiet space. You need to get some distance from the messiness. Walking away, even momentarily, often provides enough of a break to get some perspective.(如果可以的话,到外面去。
40.上文“After returning to your place, take a few moments to think about the situation.(回到你的地方后,花点时间思考一下情况)”提到花点时间思考一下情况,结合下文“As you do so, highlight the things that are adding fuel to your feeling of too much pressure. By taking the time to look at your priorities and time commitments(当你这样做的时候,突出那些给你的压力增加燃料的事情。花点时间看看你的优先事项和时间承诺)”可知,空处是承接上文,思考之后写下自己要做的事情,然后花点时间看看优先事项和截止日期,G项“写下你待办事项清单上的所有事情”符合语境,故选G。

My mother was frightened by my action at first. Never did she think I would jump into the water without my father accompanying me. Scared and terrified, she almost let out a cry for help. But what surprised her most was that I was actually swimming without struggle. In no time, her panic gave way to excitement. Meanwhile, she cheered me on, stimulating me to swim with pride. I was swimming confidently when my father came back. Seeing me swimming on my own, he was astonished as well. However, he said nothing, signing me to enjoy snacks.
Eating the snacks bought by my father, we were all thrilled and excited. My mother seemed to have forgotten her terror just now. My father was satisfied with my progress, but still wished I hadn’t taken risks. After all, safety matters a lot. Nodding my head, I promised not to take risks any more. A little adventurous as it was, this was the first time that I had realized my achievements could make my parents so happy and proud, which also boosted my confidence. It was this childhood adventure that made me understand nothing is impossible with all your efforts and devotion.
