“Well,” said Sarah, It was a bit scary. There was a horrible man. He was dressed in black, and his head was like a skull. And he had huge empty eyes.”
“And big black tears were running out of his eyes and down his skull,” Ben added.
“And the skull was—hey...” Sarah shouted. “How do you know that How do you know what happened in my dream ”
“Because I had the same dream,” said Ben. “Then the man said, ‘I am the Lord of Tears, and soon I will be the master of the world. Soon there will be no more laughter and no more smiles. Soon there will only be tears.’ And then I woke up.”
“I woke up when he said that, too,” said Sarah.
“But I also had another dream,” said Ben. “And in that dream I heard a lovely voice. And it said, ‘Go and find the Lord of Tears. And take away the Mirror of Smiles. ”

(2024·湖南长沙·二模)The country of Lilliput was very beautiful, and because I was so tall, I could see much of the land. I thought to myself that Lilliput was as nice and rich as my homeland, England. Then the king and some other men stopped a little distance away from me and managed to tell me many things about their country using some large pictures. I learned that the temple behind me was going to be my home! The king then explained that his servants would bring me food and drink three times a day, as well as other things. I was also told that I would have teachers to help me learn the Lilliputian language. I really appreciated their help.
When the king left, some soldiers stayed behind to protect me from the Lilliputians. A group of men grabbed some stones and threw them at me. When the soldiers saw what was happening, they tied up the men who had thrown the stones. And then the soldiers dragged them over to me so that I would punish them. The men looked terribly afraid, and I realized that I could punish them by scaring them. Quickly, I put them into my pockets of my shirt. Then I took one of the men in my hand and held him over my mouth as if I was going to eat him. Then I took out a small knife that I had and held it up to the man’s neck. Just when it seemed like I was going to kill the man, I used my knife to cut the ropes from his arms and legs. Then I did the same thing with the other men who were still in my pocket and gently put them all down on the ground. I guessed that no one else would throw any more stones

Pip meets a stranger
My first name was Philip, but when I was a small child, I could only manage to say Pip. So Pip was what everybody called me. I lived in a small village in Essex with my sister, who was over twenty years older than me, and married to Joe Gargery, the village blacksmith (铁匠). My parents had died when I was a baby, so I could not remember them at all, but quite often I used to visit the churchyard, about a mile from the village, to look at their names on their gravestones (墓碑).
My first memory is of sitting on a gravestone in that churchyard one cold, grey, December afternoon, looking out at the dark, flat, wild marshes divided by the black line of the River Thames, and listening to the rushing sound of the sea in the distance.
“Don’t say a word!” cried a terrible voice, as a man jumped up from among the graves and caught hold of me. “If you shout, I’ll cut your throat (喉咙)!” He was a big man, dressed all in grey, with an iron chain (铁链) on his leg. His clothes were wet and torn. He looked tired, and hungry, and very fierce (凶狠的). I had never been so scared in my whole life.
“Oh! Don’t cut my throat, sir!” I begged in fear.
“Tell me your name, boy! Quick!” he said, still holding me. “And show me where you live!”
“My name’s Pip, sir. And I live in the village over there.”
He picked me up and turned me upside down. Nothing fell out of my pocket except a piece of old bread. He ate it in two bites, like a dog, and put me back on the gravestone.
“So where are your father and mother ” he asked.
“There, sit,” I answered, pointing to their graves.
“What!” he cried, and was about to run, when he saw where I was pointing. “Oh!” he said. “I see. They’re dead. Well, who do you live with, if I let you live, which I haven’t decided yet ”
“With my sister, sir, wife of Joe Gargery, the Blacksmith.”
“Blacksmith, you say ” And he looked down at his leg. Then he held me by both arms and stared (注视) fiercely down into my eyes.
“Now look here. You bring me a file. You know what that is And you bring me some food. If you don’t, or if you tell anyone about me, I’ll cut your heart out.”
“I promise I’ll do it, sir,” I answered. I was badly scared and my whole body was shaking.
“You see,” he continued, smiling unpleasantly, “I travel with a young man, a friend of mine, who roasts boys’ hearts and eats them. He’ll find you, wherever you are, and he’ll have your heart. So bring the file and the food to that wooden shelter over there, early tomorrow morning, if you want to keep your heart, that is. Remember, you promised!”
I watched him turn and walk with difficulty across the marshes, the chain hanging clumsily around his leg. Then I ran home as fast as I could.

(an extract from Gulliver’s Travels)
I ran away from the huge living thing as fast as possible, and did not stop until I found myself in some fields. The grass was about seven metres high and the crops were about thirteen metres high. It took me an hour to cross just one field. The field had bushes at least forty metres high. ① The trees around were much taller. I was trying to find a hole in the bushes, so that I could get into the next field. I saw another huge man coming towards me. He seemed as tall as a mountain, and his feet were as long as about ten metres.
In great fear and surprise, I hid in the crops, and only hoped he would not notice me. ② He seemed to be a master and shouted in a voice like thunder. Then seven other huge men came here. The master asked them to cut down the crops in the field while I was hiding. As they moved towards me, I moved away, but at last I came to a
part of the field without crops. There was not anywhere for me to hide, and I was afraid that the huge men would cut me into pieces with their knives. I lay down and prepared to die. I could not stop myself thinking of Lilliput. There, I myself was also a huge man and became famous for helping the people in that small country. ③ I began to understand how a very small living felt.
Suddenly, I noticed that one of the huge men was next to me. As his huge foot rose over my head, I screamed as loudly as I could. He looked around on the ground, and finally saw me. He looked at me for a moment, then very carefully, he picked me up with fingers and looked at me. I was now twenty metres up in the air, and I hoped he would not throw me to the ground. ④ I did nothing but spoke politely to him. Of course, I knew he did not understand any of my language. He took me to his master. They soon found that I was not an animal, but a smart living thing. The master carefully put me in his pocket and took me home to show to his wife. When she saw me, she screamed and jumped back in fear, maybe thinking I was an insect. But after a couple of days, she became used to me, and was very kind to me.

The Barkers were a very happy family. Jerry had a cab and two horses. His other horse was a tall, white animal called Captain.

“Let’s call him Jack, after the old horse, shall we, Harry ” said Dolly.

The first week of my life as Jack, the London cab horse was very hard. The noise and the people and the traffic on the streets frightened me. But Jerry was a very good driver, and that helped a lot. Jerry soon found that I was ready to work hard and do my best, and he didn’t whip (鞭打) me.
He kept us very clean, and gave us as much food as we wanted. But the best thing was that we had Sundays off.
One day, while our cab was waiting outside a park, a dirty old cab drove up beside us. The horse was an old chestnut. Suddenly she looked at me and said, “Black Beauty, is that you ”
It was Ginger! But how different she was! She was thin, and tired from too much hard work. She looked miserable and she had a bad cough. She told me her sad story.
She had a year’s rest and then a gentleman bought her. For a while she got on very well. Then one day after a long gallop (疾驰) her old problem returned, and her back hurt again. They bought and sold her several times after that.
“Then at last, ” she said, “a man who has a lot of cabs and horses bought me. I work hard, all week, with no rest on Sundays. I wish I was dead.”
I was very sad to hear this. I put my nose up to Ginger’s, but I didn’t know what to say to her. She said,
“Black Beauty, you are my only friend.”
Just then her driver came back, and they drove off. I felt very sad indeed to see Ginger like this.
A short time after this I saw a cart with a dead horse in it. It was a chestnut horse with a long, thin neck. I think it was Ginger. I hope so, for then all her problems were over.

around him.)
The Emperor spoke in a low voice but I could hear all the words clearly. His Majesty and I often spoke to each other but neither of us understood a single word. I tried words from many languages. No one could understand me, not even the cleverest of the Emperor’s followers.
After about two hours the Emperor left. His wife, children and their servants went also. There were strong guards around me. This was to stop the crowd of people from hurting me.
An officer told the guards to hold six men who made me angry. These men were given to me and I had to choose their punishment. I put five of them in my pocket. Then I pretended (假装) to eat the sixth man.
The poor man screamed terribly. The guards were worried when they saw my knife in my hand. I only cut the rope round his hands. Then I put him on his feet and let him go. I lifted the other five men out of my pocket and put them gently on the ground too.
The people and the soldiers were very pleased with my great kindness. They told the Emperor about it immediately. Emperor ordered his men to make a bed for me and they had to join six hundred of their little beds together to make one bed for me.
At the same time the Emperor asked all his advisers for their advice on how to deal with me. They were very worried. If they set me free, I might be dangerous. I was eating so much food that soon all the people would be hungry. The farmers could not grow enough food to feed all of us.

(2024·山东青岛·一模)If you love reading books, you must know about the book The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. The book is quite interesting and popular among kids. Even if I am an adult now the book is 51 one of my favorites. After re-reading the book recently, I have 52 an important lesson from Tom Sawyer.
In our daily lives, we are often given some boring or tiring 53 . What’s in your mind when your mother 54 you to do some chores Have you ever wanted to complain I think most people have.
Tom Sawyer, however, had a different thought when he was given a boring task. One day, Aunt Polly told Tom to 55 the fence (篱色). Tom was doing his job, when his friend Ben Rogers happened to pass by. Instead of complaining, Tom told Ben that he felt “ 56 ” about the task. “Only one in a thousand—maybe even two thousand—boys can do this! “Tom said.
Tom’s words made Ben interested in the task. He even gave Tom his apple so that he could have a 57 to paint the fence. If Tom had thought about 58 but complaining, he would have had a bad day painting the fence.
This story teaches me a valuable lesson: Complaining is 59 . The next time you are given a boring or tiring task, don’t complain. Unlike what happens in the story of Tom Sawyer, it is unlikely that someone will come and do the work for you. So, don’t complain, 60 you’ll feel better and perhaps even do a better job!
