(2024·上海嘉定·二模)Oceans cover two-thirds of our Earth. There are five main oceans which all flow into each other: the Arctic Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the Pacific Ocean and the Southern Ocean.
What are the Layers of the Ocean
Oceans are made of five layers or depths. Each layer has different characteristics (特点), such as the temperature and the amount of light. They have unique creatures (独特的生物) living within them.
The Sunlight Zone-up to 200m below the surface of the ocean
There is plenty of sunlight and heat in this zone although both decrease (减少) as you go deeper. There are many different living things within this layer, including seaweed, dolphins, fish, and coral reefs. Humans enjoy this warm layer for activities such as swimming and fishing.
The Twilight Zone-up to 1,000m below the surface of the ocean
Only weak sunlight reaches this deeper layer. No plants grow within this layer. It is home to sea animals which often have large eyes, including the sea cucumber, the wolf eel, the swordfish and the octopus. Humans can dive to this layer wearing protective suits.
The Midnight Zone-up to 4,000m below the surface of the ocean
The Midnight Zone is pitch-black because sunlight cannot reach this layer. Some light can be seen from creatures that make their own light, such as anglerfish, jelly fish and viperfish.
Abyss-up to 6,000m below the surface of the ocean
The sunlight cannot reach this layer at all, so it is pitch-black and near freezing. Very few creatures live here, but those that do are mainly transparent (透明的), blind invertebrates (无脊椎动物), such as lanternfish, squid and amphipod.
The Trenches-up to 11,000m below the surface of the ocean
The Trenches are narrow, underwater valleys of the ocean floor which have high pressure and near-freezing temperature. There is no natural light in this zone, but different creatures can be found, such as sea stars.

A. B.

(23-24九年级下·上海嘉定·阶段练习)Julie Willis is an artist from San Francisco who moved to London ten years ago. We asked her to compare life in San Francisco and London. Here’s what she told us. (1) The cities
San Francisco is a lovely city in a beautiful bay in the USA.It’s got lots of great buildings and places. It’s smaller and much more modern than London, but it’s less interesting. London has a lot more theatres and museums. The Americans are usually more interested in money than culture! The buildings and streets in London are very great, and the parks and markets are wonderful. London is not as dangerous as San Francisco. I feel much safer living here—nobody carries a gun. The police don’t carry guns either.
(2) The living
People have a higher standard (水平) of living in San Francisco because it’s much less expensive than England. For example, petrol is less than half the price and the things like food, clothes and cameras are much cheaper. It’s a shopper’s paradise and I always spend a lot of money buying things before I go back to London! It’s a bit more expensive to rent a house in London and my bills are much bigger than they were in San Francisco. So, although my salary in London is about the same as it was in the United States, I have to work harder to get the same quality of life as I had before.
(3)________
In San Francisco you can walk everywhere because it’s a small city. There’s less traffic than in London, and the public transport is great. There are cable cars to go up all the hills and electric buses which make the city much cleaner. Public transport in London is terrible and really expensive. It takes me an hour to get to work and the journey is usually stressful (紧张的). London’s dirtier too and much more polluted. The traffic is bad, because there is too many cars and the streets are narrow. But English drivers aren’t as bad as American drivers.
(4) Food
Food in the United States is much better. It’s fresher, cheaper, and there’s much more choice. Restaurants aren’t as expensive as in London and the service is much better. In some restaurants they put a clock on the table when you arrive, and if they haven’t served your meal in five minutes, they’ll give you the food free!
55.Living in London isn’t as dangerous as in San Francisco because ________.
A.there are less people in London
B.the police carry guns
C.nobody carries a gun besides the police
D.the buildings and streets are very great
56.The writer always ________ before she goes back to London.
A.spends a lot of money buying things
B.spends a little money buying things
C.rents a house
D.visits great buildings and places
57.What’s the best title of the paragraph (3)
A.Air pollution B.Public transport C.Busy traffic D.City drivers
58.The writer thinks the traffic in London is ________.
A.terrible but cheap B.wonderful and cheap
C.wonderful and really expensive D.terrible and really expensive
59.________ is fresher, cheaper and there’s much more choice.
A.Food in London B.Food in the United States
C.Neither in London nor in the United States D.Both in London and in the United States
60.You’ll get free food in a restaurant in San Francisco if ________.
A.they put a clock on your table
B.they have served you badly
C.they haven’t served your meal in five minutes
D.the food is not delicious

Every country in the world has a flag. A flag is a piece of cloth with a picture or pattern on it. The flag is a symbol that stands for the country. It is a custom in many places for people to fly or hang a flag. The flag tells something about the country and its culture. This may be about its land, its history, or the things that the people do there.
Many flags have patterns of stripes (条纹). The flag of Italy has a green stripe, a white stripe and a red stripe. Each stripe tells something about Italy. The white stripe is symbol of Italy’s snowy mountains. Some flags show pictures. The flag of Canada has a picture of a red maple (枫叶) leaf, which is a symbol of the maple trees in Canada. The Mexican flag has both a pattern of stripes and a picture. The picture shows an eagle eating a snake. This picture comes from a very old Mexican story.
A flag may also tell about a country’s past. The American flag is called the Stars and Stripes. It has pattern of fifty stars and thirteen stripes. The fifty stars are a symbol of the fifty states in the country, and the thirteen stripes are a symbol of the country’s first thirteen colonies (殖民地).
However, a flag may be a symbol of a group, a school, or an event like the Olympics. The flag of the Olympics shows five rings of different colors that connect. Each ring is a symbol for a part of the world that joins in the Olympics. The Red Cross is group that helps people who are in trouble. If a person sees the Red Cross flag, which has a red cross against a white background, he knows he can ask for help. People may fly a flag as a custom on a holiday. Children’s Day in Japan is a holiday when the country wishes for children’s happiness. It is a custom on this day to fly a flag with a picture of a fish.
Flags are also used as a way to talk. A flag with patterns can be very helpful to people who do not speak the
same language. Sailors on ships use flags to talk to sailors on other ships. They may not speak the same language, but they know what the patterns mean. A flag with blue and white squares says “no.” A flag with five stripes that are blue, white, and red says “yes.”
