Passage 1
(2024·广东东莞·一模)Language is important both because of what it communicates and how it does the communication. The power of language is so strong that it shows how language can actually influence the way we think. To broaden (拓宽) language is to broaden the ability to think. We can see this in children, whose thinking develops gradually hand in hand with the language.
So how should we use the power of language: turning words into shapes. Professors have found that our mind explains what it hears. The words that come out of our mouths, create the reality (现实)-for better or worse. Unfortunately, it’s often worse as we destroy our hope of success simply by using negative language that influences our opinions and kills our confidence. What you think directly influence show you feel and how you behave. So if you think you’re a loser, you’ll feel like a loser. Then, you’ll act like a loser, and you will believe you must be a loser.
Creating a more positive opinion can lead to better result. That’s not to say positive thoughts have magic powers. But positive thoughts lead to productive behavior, which increases your chances of a successful result. To build self-confidence, you have to change the way you speak. Remember them: Try to use positive language. Take actions quickly. Have your opinions. And don’t often say sorry to other people unless you are wrong.
Words have magical powers. They can either bring the greatest happiness or the deepest disappointment (失望).

Passage 2
(2024·山东济南·二模)① A tree has roots (根). People have roots, too. If you get to the root of a problem, you will solve it. It’s the same thing with words. Dig deeply into a big, unknown word and you will understand where it came from.
② As readers, especially those reading in a second language, we need to deal with the text as if we were detectives (侦探) who are just looking for information to unlock the unknown. Like any good detective arriving on the crime scene, the first thing to do when meeting a new and difficult word is to judge (判断) the situation, to look at everything that is known and see if it helps us to understand what it means.
③ As you know, prefixes (前缀) and suffixes (后缀) can be added to the beginning or end of words to change the meaning. Know them, and you will have the word building power. But root words are the key. Take time to learn a few of these, put them in your memory, and you will become a master word detective.
④ Let’s look at one common root word used in English. “Alter” from the Latin word means “other”. When you meet this root word, you know that the bigger word has something to do with “other”. Examine the word “alternate”. Can you find the Latin root in it
● If you and your friend like to eat out, first you pay and the other pays the next time. You are alternating paying.
● If you go to the movies on alternate Saturdays, you go on one Saturday, but not the other Saturday. ● If you have no alternative, you have no other choice.
⑤ Learn as many root words as possible in the language you are studying. Then use your “rooting for words” skills. Like any new skill, practice and hard work are always paid back.
6.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to (所指)
A.The situation. B.The crime scene.
C.A new and difficult word. D.Everything that is known.

A.They each pay half. B.Jim pays every time.
C.Their parents pay for them. D.They take turns to pay.
8.How does the writer explain his ideas about root words
A.By giving a fact. B.By taking an example.
C.By telling a story. D.By having a discussion.
9.“Sen” from the Latin word means “old”. Which word uses this Latin root

C.A criminal was sentenced to death by law. D.60 students were present at the sports meeting.
10.Which of the following shows the structure (结构) of the text

Passage 3
(2024·内蒙古赤峰·二模)In public places, people often use body language to express their meanings. Waving and bowing are examples of body language. Different kinds of body language show different cultures in different countries.
In China, waving means greeting, but in Japan bowing is used. Sometimes this kind of body language is polite in one country, but it is not polite in another. We should pay attention to using it. In China, nodding your head shows you agree with someone, but in India, shaking your head
from side to side shows agreement. In China, people hold hands as a sign of friendship, but people seldom hold hands in North America.
It is worth noting that different meanings of body language can also cause problems in understanding. Some people do not understand how to use thumb (拇指) correctly. Most people often show one thumb to praise someone or something. You can’t raise your thumb when someone is in danger. In a basketball match, if the judge shows two thumbs, it means two players break the rules.
11.Which of the following is not body language
A.Smile. B.Waving. C.Bowing. D.Writing a letter.
12.How many kinds of body language are mentioned in the passage
A.5 B.6 C.7 D.8

Passage 4
(2024·安徽淮南·二模)Thousands of years ago, Chinese characters (汉字) appeared on animal bones (骨头) and bamboo before they were written on paper. Now there is a new place to hold the ancient Chinese texts in the modern age.
Recently, a research team from Nanjing Agricultural University together with Gulian, a leading ancient Chinese text publisher, introduced a large language model called Xunzi.
“Traditional Chinese characters and the absence of punctuation marks (标点符号) are always making reading traditional texts hard,” said Wang Dongbo, who led the research.
To create this model, Wang and his teammates did a lot of research on Chinese classics (名著). “We have to work on a lot of Chinese characters and we want to share them with the world,” said Wang.
However, it was not an easy job. Wang said they needed to learn these classics first and then mark the characters into different groups.
But their hard work seems to pay off. Now, the model can help users understand and study ancient Chinese texts. “The model can help us learn more information hidden in our traditional culture and find something new. We also want to let more people understand traditional Chinese culture,” said Wang. So they shared the large language model on the website, allowing users to download and use it for free.

A.A famous writer. B.A text publisher.
C.A language model. D.An ancient book.
16.Why did Wang and his team invent Xunzi

C.It’s modern and special. D.It’s difficult to use for free.

One thing I can tell you is that, once you’ve started learning, you should try to think in English as much as you can. If you see something when you’re riding your bike or walking down the street, just think about “How would I say them in English ” At first, it might be with simple words or phrases but later you should think about longer phrases and sentences. Now I’m in America, and for most of the time, I would think in English and speak it directly. It’s amazing how much this helps.
For several years after I started learning, I was often afraid of talking with others in English because I didn’t want to make mistakes. Finally I got it over. And while traveling In America, I’d
try to hang out with friends who couldn’t speak Chinese, so that I’d have no choice but to speak English. And I also decide that if I said something stupid and other people laughed at me, then so be it. After that my English started improving much more quickly.
Besides, it maybe a good idea to ask your American friends to look at the way you’re writing and give you some suggestions for improvement.

(2024·重庆綦江·一模)Project-based learning (项目化学习) is learning while doing. It gives learners the chance to get a deeper understanding of a topic. During the learning, learners use real-world examples and challenges to solve problems. Project-based learning is becoming widely used in schools. Students work on a project over a period of time—from a week to a term. At the end of the project, they show their knowledge and skills by creating a product for people. Let’s take the example of Sandra.
Sandra is an eleven-year-old student in Sunshine Primary School. She wanted to know more about Greek mythology (希腊神话). Well, how did she make it
She chose Greek mythology characters as the topic because she was interested in the characters and their stories. Step 1 Choose a topic
She had to learn about that topic and do some research on it. For information, she read books and articles about the history of Greek mythology. She also read some novels like Harry Potter and Percy Jackson. She watched videos and played games all connected with Greek mythology. When she collected her information, she was ready to create a project. Step 2 Do the research
She created a project based on (以……为基础) her talents and skills. She loves to build with Legos (乐高), so she decided to build lego creations based on the stories of Greek mythology characters. From the example of Sandra, we can see that project-based learning allows a student to learn about a topic and then create a project based on his or her talents and skills. Passage 11
(2024·河南许昌·一模)Few words are spoken more often every day on the streets of Britain than “I’m sorry”. This phrase has become such a common response (反应) that it has taken on a lot of meanings.
Saying “Sorry” means to apologize (道歉). This is simple and easy to understand. We learn it both as a native speaker and as a student of foreign languages.
But in Britain, it takes on another meaning. It is a cultural expression. Imagine this: a man walks down the street, looking down at his phone. A woman is walking in the opposite direction, towards the man. She sees him, but she can’t get out of the way in time. The man bumps (碰撞) into the woman. Who should say sorry Naturally, the man should say sorry, because it was he
who wasn’t looking where he was going. Yet in Britain, it is common for both to apologize. So the man and the women will apologize to each other.
Other times it may sound funny to hear “sorry”. Some of my friends say it at restaurants, as they ask the waiter. “Sorry, but can I order another drink ” It is not to apologize, but just to express that we need the waiter. In Britain, sorry doesn’t always mean exactly what you think.

Passage 14
(2024·四川南充·一模)People use languages to communicate. Any language has its ways to express people’s minds. One of the ways in common is the use of idioms (习语). An idiom is a group of words. It has a special meaning that is different from the usual meaning. For example, under the weather is an idiom meaning ill. So when people say “I’m under the weather”, they are saying that they’re not feeling well. Another example, in all weathers means in all kinds of weather. So, “There are homeless people sleeping on the streets in all weathers” tells us that homeless people sleep on the streets no matter whether it is cold or hot.
Different languages may have different ways to make idioms. For people who are learning a foreign language, idioms could cause misunderstanding and bring them endless headaches. On the other hand, if things are done right, idioms can also be a fun way of looking into a new culture and understanding how the people think and talk.
Metaphor is often used in idioms. Let’s read the following two examples:
It makes my blood boil when people litter.
The night was dark and quiet; my blood ran cold when I heard a strange noise outside at dark night.
In neither situation above, our blood can reach the point so high or so low in temperature. Yet, with the situations the two sentences created, it is not difficult to work out the unhappy feelings of really angry in the first example and very afraid in the second.
Of course, not all idioms are this easy to understand. When we meet idioms of a foreign language, a good dictionary of idioms is always suggested.

A.learning idioms is funny B.idioms may bring headaches

Passage 15
(2024·广东深圳·一模)With most Chinese people speaking Mandarin, or putonghua, some local dialects, or fangyan, are in danger of disappearing. To save them, the Chinese government started the Chinese Language Resources (资源) Protection Project in 2015.
This project looked at how people talk in 1,712 places. Their languages included 103 dialects that are almost gone. Over five years, more than 350 universities and research groups joined in, along with over 4,500 experts (专家) and more than 6,000 dialect speakers.
This project has helped China to build the largest language resource library in the world. Now a dialect library has been built online, where people can learn dialects from over 5.6 million recordings and over 5 million videos. At present, the project has entered into the second stage. It plans to create digital tools like apps and mobile dictionaries to help people learn dialects.

(2024·云南红河·一模)Why did ancient Chinese emperors call themselves zhen (朕) or guaren (寡人) Research shows that the word zhen used to be a first-person pronoun. Before the Qin Dynasty, it meant “I” or “me” and everyone from farmers to state rulers could use it. The word can be found in books like Li Sao and Shi Jing.
However, when the state of Qin defeated all the other six states and unified China, Qinshihuang, the first emperor in Chinese history, changed how this word could be used. He made it a rule that the word zhen could only be used by the emperor himself. Since then, it has been kept only for rulers.
Chinese emperors also called themselves guaren, In ancient China, emperors regarded
themselves as the “Sons of Heaven”, and believed they had a “Mandate of Heaven” to rule. However, if the “Son of Heaven” was found to have poor morals (德行), they would lose the mandate, So, the rulers used the phrase guaren or guadezhiren, meaning “a person who doesn’t have morality”. In this way, they could show their modesty (谦虚). In Chinese culture, people should not talk proudly about their own abilities and beliefs. Modesty is seen as a virtue (美德). English is spoken by about 400 million people, mostly in the US, the UK, Canada, Australia,

It is also important to know that English has borrowed many words from other languages, for example, “restaurant” from French, “zero” from Arabic, “piano” from Italian, and “tofu” from Chinese.

Many language teachers know the importance of music and they often use it in teaching and learning. Hua Zhuying, a teacher at a Chinese language school in Washington DC, likes using songs in teaching Chinese. She said, “I use music all the time to teach children Chinese. For little kids usually we use English songs but teach them the Chinese lyrics. Not only does it work, but it is fun for children.
