Do you know that over 1/3 of all food produced in the world goes to waste According to the United Nations (UN), every year around the world, about one billion (十亿) tons of food is wasted. At the same time, there are nearly one billion people who go hungry. Simply 1/4 of the food wasted is enough to keep them out of hunger. In addition, the wasted food produces over three billion tons of carbon dioxide (CO2), which speeds up climate (气候) change. What can we do to solve this food waste problem
One effective solution is balancing food production with demand (需求). In hotels and other similar places, special instruments should be used so that cooking specialists just prepare and cook food as it is ordered.
Another effective solution is starting programs to reduce (减少) food waste. Stores and buyers can try their best to be creative in food waste reduction. For example, stores can provide customers with instructions telling them how to make full use of food. Buyers can try not fixing their eyes only on food of the best quality (质量). Sometimes, the food of non-top quality is also good enough to eat, or can be bought and then used to make delicious dishes.
One of the hardest solutions to achieve is for each and every one to buy and prepare food with a plan of their own so that less food is wasted. Challenging as it is, the use of meal plans in preparing food can play an important role in ending food waste in the family.
Food recycling is one of the known solutions. Efforts are now already in progress. Food that is not safe for humans to eat is recycled into other products such as animal feeds and clothing. Yet, there is still a long way to go and much for improvement in this area.
In a word, food waste has been one of the biggest problems in the world that have influenced us greatly. Many solutions have been found and many more are yet to be worked out. If each of us can put in more efforts, food waste is sure to be reduced for the good of our future.

Betty was excited to show her brother David the basket filled with seashells. But David was busy helping Dad get everything back into the car. "What are you going to do with those useless things " he said. "You can't take them home."
"But I want these seashells," Betty said unhappily. "Each one is a different shape and size. They are all special."
Suddenly, David saw the water rising along the beach. He shouted to Betty, "The waves(海浪) are about to take your toys!" As Betty ran to get her things, she called to David, "Please put my seashells into the car!"
David was putting one of the beach chairs into the car when his foot accidentally knocked over the basket. As David lifted a heavy box, he slipped(滑倒) and dropped the box right on top of the seashells, breaking most of them into pieces.
Betty came back with her toys. When she saw her seashells broken, she began to cry. David started to pick up the seashells and place them carefully back into the basket.
Dad tried to explain to Betty that it was an accident. But Betty was still upset. David also felt sad. He thought about what he could do to make it up to his sister. When he got home, he had a perfect idea.

Most of us probably have told a lie at one time or another. Some lies are harmful. Some are mostly harmless. Still other lies may even he created with kindness. But whatever kind of lie you tell, it takes surprising brainpower to pull it off. Lying also can have unwanted influences, too.
When you tell the truth, you think of what you want to say and just say it. However, lying takes much more work—you have to come up with a story and remember it. A lot of that work is done in a brain area called the prefrontal cortex(前额叶皮层). It's responsible for working memory and executive function(执行功能) tasks such as planning, problem-solving and self-control. Working memory keeps things in mind just for a little while as you're using them. Executive function comes into play when you use self-control to keep from blurting out(脱口而出) the facts that would uncover your lie. It helps you recall all the details of a lie to make sure that it sounds believable. It also lets you think a step or two ahead to make sure the lie you're telling will likely hold up to questioning.
Calling on your executive function this way uses up a lot of brainpower. Vendemia, a neuroscientist at the University of South Carolina, did a research and has found that people's mental workload will be heavier and their reaction time longer when they lie. Worse still, when the prefrontal cortex is busy with tasks related to lying, she notes, it has a harder time doing other tasks such as making a study plan or using self-control to keep from spending too much time on computer games.
Lying has social influences, too. Even the kindest lies can sometimes be risky and often backfire. When you give dishonest praise, you may make your friends feel good at first. But if you do it often enough, they'll soon learn that they can't trust your praise. People generally value honesty and don't like liars, so if you are viewed as untrustworthy, it can be bad for your relationships.
It's widely agreed that nearly all cultures value honesty, and now science is revealing(揭示) how dishonesty influences the brain and your ability to build the trust on which strong relationships depend. So, even when lying doesn't stretch your nose, it still comes at a price that you can't afford.
30.The second paragraph is mainly about _______.
A. why self-control benefits the brain
B. what social influences lying can bring
C. how the brain works when people lie
D. when executive function comes into play
31.What can we learn about lying from the passage
A. Lying improves working memory.
B. Covering lies takes much brainpower.
C. The nature of lies is decided by the brain.
D. People's reaction can be sped up by lying.
32.The underlined word "backfire" in Paragraph 4 probably means _______.
A. lead to serious accidents B. help to win full support
C. build up strong relationships D. have the opposite effect
33.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A. Signs of Lying B. Costs of Lying C. Causes of Lies D. Types of Lies

It is the night before handing in the report, and Emily Regan still has to research and write the ten-page paper. Emily’s problem is procrastination (拖延症). She has waited to do her work until the very last second and now she is stressed and has to work through the night to complete her paper. Procrastination is a problem for many students, but it does not have to be. Instead of waiting to start your homework until just before the deadline, you can follow these simple steps to avoid procrastination.
First, do a little bit every day rather than all at once. For example, in Emily’s case, she could have spent 30 minutes a day working on that research paper and divided her work into parts. One week could have been spent doing research, one week writing an outline, one week writing the first draft (初稿), and the final week could have been spent finalizing the paper. Then, schedule (安排) that study time into your daily life. Treat your work like any other fun activities you have. Remember, you are the boss and it is up to you to follow your schedule. Be responsible for yourself and do not make any other plans during the time you have set aside that will prevent you from doing your work.
Once you have organized your time in this way, it is important to find a place to work where there are few distractions (干扰). For example, if you are writing a paper, do not go on the Internet to check your email or see who else is online, and do not stay in a room where there is a TV. Instead, focus on the work you planned for that time. Then you can reward (奖励) yourself for your hard work by doing whatever you want—emailing, chatting with friends, or watching television. You will probably enjoy yourself more because you will not have the work hanging over your head and stressing you out.
Although procrastination is a common mistake that many students make, do not put yourself in Emily’s shoes and leave work until the last minute. It is easy to make some simple changes in the way you work to prevent it from happening.
34.What does Emily Regan have to do the night before handing in the report
35.What is the first thing you can do to avoid procrastination
36.How can you reward yourself for your hard work
37.What do you think of procrastination What do you suggest people do to avoid procrastination (List at least two ways)
