There were some wooden pieces floating in the river near the bank. Willie jumped upon one of them to see if he could throw a stone across the river. Then he started, as fast as he could run, up the street towards Mr. Brown’s store. When he got there the door was shut, but he barked loudly, until someone came and opened it. He put on his hat and went with the dog.

So I write back, “I’ve read all those articles. I’ll take 7 as a loving son’s expectations towards his mother. He must be thinking that his mother is still 8 enough to accept new things. That makes me feel proud. What we parents lack (缺乏) most is the ability to learn and 9 , in both body and mind. Thank you, my son.”
In this way we share ideas and 10 each other, with a gentle and beautiful language we seldom use. Every time I read those messages, I feel my heart filled with warmth.

Evans Wadongo was from a village of Africa. He had to do homework by the light of a kerosene lamp (煤油灯). Evans’ eyes hurt and this made studying difficult. It was common in his village. Many children left school for this reason... so they remained poor for the rest of their lives.
Although studying was difficult, Evans was an excellent student and went to a university. He continued to worry about the kerosene lamp. By this time, he realized it was not just bad for school children but for the whole family. First, it can cause illnesses such as coughs. Also, the light can hurt people’s eyes. ⑤The robot also has cameras inside to help it map out a 360-degree view (景象) of its environment.
⑥Nowadays, Bionic human-like robots can “strike a chord (引起共鸣) with people,” a US robotics scientist Marc Raibert told New Yorker. They mostly work with humans, as tour guides or by helping visitors at front desks. There are also robots that share the work of nurses, such as handing out medicine. This could be because people are comfortable living and working with machines that look and act like them.

Passage A
When do you become an adult (成年人) The answers are different from country to country. In modern China, adulthood for both boys and girls starts at the age of 18. By the time most people reach 18, they have finished high school and are ready for university. So a person’s 18th birthday often means a celebration of both adulthood and the start of college life.
Did children in ancient China become adults at 18 In fact, boys in ancient China became adults at 20 and girls at 15. And there was a ceremony to celebrate this time. After the ceremony, a young person could be called an “adult”.
For girls, the ceremony was called Ji Li. “Ji” is a kind of hairpin (发夹). In ancient times, only girls from rich families could have this ceremony. It was simple and didn’t take much time. For boys, the ceremony was called Guan Li. ▲ Before the ceremony, a boy’s family often chose a lucky day and invited many guests. On that day, the boy needed to dress up. The father would wash hands and put three

On the way to the kitchen, you want to call a friend. Your cell phone is by the window because it gets its energy from the sun. But you don’t need to pick up the phone. You can just touch your jacket to make the call.
It’s breakfast time. You reach for the milk, but a voice says, “Don’t drink that!” Your fridge knows the milk is old, and tells the supermarket to replace it. Ten minutes later, it’s sent by a drone (无人机).
As you leave for work, ____▲____. Your home goes into “sleep” mode (模式) to save energy. In 2045, cars

①Japan’s population is rapidly aging, with 28 percent of its people aged 65 or older. This means there aren’t enough young people doing jobs that need physical strength (力量) like building things and farming.
②To encourage older people to work on, technology companies in Japan have developed special suits called exoskeleton (外骨骼). These suits can make it easier to lift and carry heavy objects.

It doesn’t need any batteries (电池) or motors (发动机). When users put it on like a backpack, they pump (抽气) air into it 30 times with a hand pump. Then, the suit can help them lift up to 25 kg easily. The suit costs about 1000 pounds and is used by food companies to help worker lift big boxes, by old people’s homes to help workers lift people in and out of bed, as well as by food factories and building companies.
④Another company, Panasonic, is also developing different exoskeleton suits. Its most important one—the Atoun Model Y—costs 4200 pounds. It uses motors instead of air to work and can last for 8 hours. It weighs 4.5 kg and can help users lift up to 10 kg.
⑤Similarly, Japanese company JTEKT, part of the Toyota group, also began selling an exoskeleton. It’s used to help older workers and also runs on a motor.

Passage A
“Lying down” (also known as tang ping), has become a hot word among young Chinese people these days. The idea of low material needs and being willing to accept whatever life gives them is described as a “lying down” lifestyle.
Some young people complain that to raise a child needs too much money and they often get into a fight with their family. At the same time, the rising living costs including food and housing have pushed them so hard that they could hardly breathe. Some want to lie down because their tiring jobs, competition with peers, as well as personal relationships force them to run away.
On the other hand, with the great improvement of living conditions, it is true that some Chinese youth today have lost the spirit of fighting hard for a better life. “I stay at home, sleep and watch TV series, and I’m pleased with what I have now. Actually, there are many people around me who value happiness and freedom most,” said Daisy, who left her job two weeks ago. No wonder that some young people would choose to live a simple way instead of always following the good quality of fighting hard.
Interestingly, most young people, who are “big fans” of the “lying down” lifestyle, point out that they only accept a temporary (暂时的) lying down as a short rest. In fact, lying down is not totally comfortable for them. Most young people who lie down always regard it as a lack of ambition (抱负、夙愿) and feel ashamed (羞耻的) about it.
“Young people have both ambition and confusion (困惑) about their future, but most of us have refused to waste chances and challenges,” a college student said.

The environment is the world around us, including the air, water, and land. It is where we live, play, and learn. A clean environment is very important for our health and happiness. However, our environment is facing many problems, such as air pollution, water pollution, and waste disposal. To help protect our environment, we can do many things. One of the easiest ways is to reduce, reuse, and recycle. We can reduce the waste we make by using fewer plastic bags and single-use items. Reusing things, like lunch boxes and water bottles, can also help. Recycling paper, plastic, and metal is important because it saves resources and reduces pollution. Another way to protect the environment is to plant more trees. Trees provide oxygen, which we need to breath and water bottles, can also help.
