Castles are made to last. But sandcastles wash away. They are pretty enough for kings and queens. But most people would not think of living in them. Sandcastles are works of art. And they are fun to make!
Ready to build
You need the right tools to build sandcastles. The first tool is your mind. If you can picture a sandcastle, you can build it. Tools will help you.
Sand
Sandcastles are made of sand, of course. First, pack the wet sand together. For this to work, the sand has to be wet. Wet sand holds together. However, if your sand is too wet, it will fall down.
Pails (桶)
Pails are a must for great sandcastles. Push wet sand into a pail to make it hold together. You can even use a pail with a fun design. Then, flip the pail of sand into place.
Shovels
Use shovels to dig a pit (深坑) for building. Then, use them to spread the ground smooth. Next, use shovels to scoop (铲) sand into pails. You can also pat the sand into shape with them.
Utensils
Utensils from the ______, like a rolling pin (擀面杖) will help you sculpt shapes. You can use them to make designs as well.
Spray bottle
Sandcastles take time to build. Wet sand will dry in the sun and may break when you touch it. Use a spray bottle of water to keep the sand wet. Keep spraying where you are working.
Try, try again
Sandcastles can fall down. They are often easy to break. But do not give up! If your castle falls, try again. Who knows The new design might be better than you planned!

My father never kept anything for nostalgia (怀旧)—except once.
As the only sports fan in our family, I usually listened to baseball games on the radio, dreaming of watching my heroes in person at the stadium (体育馆).
One winter, my father surprised me by suggesting we save up to go to watch a baseball game on spot.
I immediately washed out a jar (罐子) and stuck a label: BASEBALL GAME FUND, 1960.
We contributed to the jar weekly, and by mid summer it was filled with money. By the end of August, however, we still hadn’t been to a game because my father had to work every Saturday and even some Sundays.
With only two weekends left in the season, I began to lose hope. He comforted me, “Well, don’t worry, Edwin. Things are sure to slow down and we’ll have a free Saturday.”
On the morning of the last game, I sat waiting hopelessly with no sign of my father when the door crashed open and my father yelled, “I’ve got tickets. We’re going!”
I could hardly breathe when we finally sat together, father and son, watching the baseball game. I sat cheering, but for my father it must have been a long afternoon trying to follow a game he didn’t understand. Several times I turned to look at him. All I could see was a face lined with tiredness from working all Saturday morning after working all week.
After the game, we kept saving money and went to two more games together.
On the second day of 1963, my father died suddenly while working. I threw away the jar.
After the funeral (葬礼), our house was filled with neighbours and relatives, but I didn’t want to talk to anybody. I walked upstairs to my parents’ bedroom, hoping, I suppose, to find some comfort from seeing what was his. As I looked through my father’s prayer (祈祷) book, something fell out. I picked it up. It was a yellowed ticket, which read, October 1, 1960, BASEBALL GAME. My father, who saved nothing for nostalgia reasons, had decided to keep this, a memory of our afternoon at the ballpark.
Carefully, I placed the ticket back into his prayer book, and slowly walked downstairs to begin the rest of my life without him.

The book, The Young Green Consumer Guide, says our world is in danger. It describes the various threats to the environment. The situation is so serious that we must do something to save the Earth.
______
The writers ask us to imagine that the Earth is inside a kind of greenhouse with the atmosphere (大气层) around it. The atmosphere acts like the glass: It lets sunlight in and keeps warmth from getting out. The atmosphere is essential for all living things. Without it, the Earth would be as cold and lifeless as the surface of the Moon.
The trouble is that our atmosphere is changing because we are polluting it with chemicals—in the form of gases—and it is keeping in too much heat!
These gases, mainly carbon dioxide (CO2) are produced by burning fuels such as petrol. The greenhouse effect may cause the level of the sea to rise and flood cities and even whole countries.
______
The burning and cutting down of the forests is making the greenhouse effect worse because trees take in CO2. It also causes soil erosion and flooding, as well as destroying the homes of people and animals that live in the forests.
______
Many of our habits cause pollution, especially our habit of using things once and then throwing them away. This creates massive mountains of rubbish. We do not know what to do with the rubbish and it pollutes our land and sea. For example, people throw away as many as seven billion drink cans in Britain each year. That is enough to reach from the Earth to the Moon.
______
The book is asking us to become “green consumers”. That means we should only buy and use environmentally friendly goods so that we can save the Earth. These goods will not damage the environment.
Let’s be green consumers and enjoy living a better life on the Earth!

There are several factors that may decide why a country chooses a particular passport colour. These factors include religious, geographical, historical or cultural ones.
Some countries try to fit in with nations or political groups they’d like to join. Governments can choose the overall design and colour for their passports from one of the four basic colours: red, blue, green, or black.
Red passports
Red, the most common passport colour, not only has religious meanings, but also may have some connections with a country’s history or politics. Countries in Northern Europe generally hold red passports.
Blue passports
The second most common passport colour is blue. Traditionally, the colour blue is meant to represent the “New World” nations in North and South America and Oceania (大洋洲). The US passport has been blue since 1976.
Green passports
Green is the most common colour of choice for Arab countries. Considered as a sign of nature and life, it is of great importance for Arabian religions. The citizens of several West African countries also have travel documents that have different shades of green, which means they belong to the Economic Community of West African States.
Black passports
Black passports are not as common as brighter colours, though dark shades tend to make a document look more official. Only 10 countries have black passports, all unconnected with geography or religion. New Zealand’s passport is black since it’s the country’s national colour.
In all, the reasons why passports are in different colours often have important and deep meanings to each government.
