Passage 1
(2024·四川南充·二模)There are many kinds of clouds. They are an important part of the earth’s weather.
A cloud is made of water drops or ice crystals (冰晶) floating in the sky. The sky can be full of water. But most of the time you can’t see the water. The drops of water are too small to see. They have turned into a gas called water vapor. As the water vapor goes higher in the sky, the air gets cooler. The cooler air causes the water droplets (小水滴) to start to stick to things like bits of dust, ice or sea salt.
Clouds get their names in two ways. One way is by where they are found in the sky. Some clouds are high up in the sky. Low clouds are close to the earth’s surface. In fact, low clouds can even touch the ground. These clouds are called fog. Middle clouds are found between low and high clouds. Another way clouds are named is by their shape. Cirrus clouds are high clouds. They look like feathers. Cumulus clouds are middle clouds. These clouds look like giant cotton balls in the sky. Stratus clouds are low clouds. They cover the sky like bed sheets.
At night, clouds reflect heat and keep the ground warmer. During the day, clouds make shade that can keep us cooler. Studying clouds helps scientists better understand the earth’s weather.
Scientists also study clouds on other planets. Mars has clouds that are like the clouds, on Earth. But other planets have clouds that aren’t made of water. For example, Jupiter has clouds made of a gas called ammonia.
Clouds Formation They are made of water 1 or ice crystals floating in the sky.
Ways to be named One is according to the 2 , the other is according to their shape.
3 *Heat can be 4 by clouds at night to keep the ground warm.
*They can keep us cool in the day.
*Studying them helps scientists have a better 5 of the weather.
Passage 2
(2024·四川绵阳·二模)70% of the earth’s surface is covered by water. However, only 3% of the water is fit for human use, and the rest is frozen or salty. According to a report by WWF, water shortage (短缺) influences nearly 27% of the world’s population.
Many reasons cause water shortage. The first is climate (气候) change. The heat caused by climate change leads to water drying out. The next is water pollution, which makes the limited water unsafe for using. What’s more, the growing population makes the situation worse. In the last 50 years, the human population has more than doubled, and today 41% of world’s population is badly in need of water.
So, what are the results of water shortage Firstly, people lack enough water to drink, which does harm to their lives and health. Besides, water shortage brings about hunger. Plants can not grow when there is not enough water. As a result, there is less food for people.
Therefore, it’s time to take action. Here are three ways for us to save water in daily life. First, take shorter showers. Save a minute or two of your shower time. Millions of people doing even the little things makes a difference. Second, check your taps (水龙头). If you forget to turn off a tap, all those wasted drops add up—sometimes 5,300 litres of water a year. Third, reuse water. Collect water after washing vegetables and pour it on your plants.
water shortage reasons 6
7
growing population
8 lacking drinking water
hunger
9 take shorter showers

Honesty is valuable in the world. There are five qualities (特征) of honest people.
Honest people have no interest in competition for popularity. They don’t pay too much attention to what others think of them.
Honest people don’t go looking for fights, but they aren’t afraid to speak their mind. Honest people will express their opinions bravely even when their beliefs (信念) are against other people. Honest people don’t get angry easily. It requires a thick skin (不计较面子) to stay honest. Not all people love to hear the truth. When honest people tell the truth, other people may get angry. Honest people may be hurt by them so that they need to have thick skin.
Honest people often have long, deep friendships. Their friends know that they won’t discuss them behind their back, and will instead deal with problems in a direct way. This allows for deeper, healthier relationships.
We can ask honest people for help and advice. They will not tell us the story that we want to hear. Although it may help avoid bad feelings, sometimes the difficult truth is the only thing we really need to know.

Passage 8
(2024·四川成都·二模)根据短文内容,完成图表中所缺信息。
Culture shock is often described as feeling mixed-up or worried in an unfamiliar place that has customs different from your own. This happens a lot to students who go to study in another country.
In the US, students might find culture shock experienced in the classroom harder to deal with. This is not only because they feel nervous about their ability to communicate in English, but also because they need to become comfortable with a discussion-based class. And students’ grades on a big test are also not openly discussed, because they are personal information.
Many international students report feeling OK with the sometimes embarrassing mistakes at a restaurant or store. But they start to feel strong culture shock when they are often faced with some uncomfortable or unfamiliar situations. “Americans are very open about expressing their thoughts on everything,” said Chau, a student from Vietnam. “I had a hard time getting used to speaking up about how I feel and going straight to the point.”
“When I first came to America from China, it was hard for me to understand that Americans drink ice water all year round. I can’t understand why drinking ice water in winter doesn’t make them cold,” said Jessica, another student. “It’s hard for me to get used to the fact that many banks and offices are closed on weekends,” she added. “This is sometimes inconvenient for me, because I don’t have time to deal with things during the working days.”
Getting used to social customs is just one part of getting used to life in America. If international students plan to get an internship (实习) when studying in the US, there is also the possibility for culture shock at work. For example, having a different professional dress code (着装要求), communicating in English by email, etc.
No matter what the situation is, international students can try to use these tips to help them feel better and get over it. Stay positive, be social, know yourself and give yourself a break.
Meaning of Culture Shock
●Culture shock is the feeling of being mixed-up or worried in a place with customs different from your own.
●It’s 36 for international students.

Passage 9
(2024·江苏无锡·一模)There is one thing in the world that’s smaller than your fingernail. But without it, we can’t use nearly all the electronics. It’s the microchip! It is one of the most important inventions in human history. How much do you know about microchips Here are some basics for you to learn it.
What are microchips
Not to be confused with potato chips, Microchips are very small electronic devices people use to store and deal with information. A microchip is a set of interconnected electronic components that are imprinted on a very small chip. As microchips have so many connected components, they are also called integrated circuits.
There are mainly two kinds of microchips: logic chips and memory chips. Logic chips are
the “brains” of electronic devices—they deal with information to finish a task. Memory chips store information.
Application and importance
Microchips are in everything electrical from computers to cellphones, TVs, cameras, cars, airplanes, appliances and medical equipment. Microchips are also used in GPS tracking devices and identification cards and are used to record activities and information.
Microchips take and process digital information and make it usable right away. For example, a Central Processing Unit (CPU), or processor, is the main chip in a computer. It s responsible for carrying out all the computer’s tasks.
What are microchips made from
The main ingredient for making microchips is silicon. It’s a chemical element that can be found in rocks, sand, clay and soil. Silicon is a semiconductor, meaning that its conductive properties can become stronger by mixing it with other ingredients. This makes it possible to turn an electrical current on or off.
The silicon used to make microchips mostly comes from silica sand, made of silicon dioxide. Helpfully, it’s everywhere! It’s the second most common element on Earth after oxygen.
How small can microchips be
One microchip is smaller than a button on your shirt but it has billions of transistors (晶体管). So it’s easy to understand just how small the features on a chip need to be. Chip features are measured in nanometers (纳米). A nanometer is one billionth of a meter. The smaller the features in the patterns created, the more transistors can fit on a chip, and the more the chip can do.
A Brief 41 to Microchips
Without microchips, one of the most important inventions in history, almost all of our electronic
products might not 42 .
Definition ·Small electronic devices are 43 to store and deal with information. ·Two kinds: logic and memory chips.
Application and importance ·They are in everything electrical to record activities and information. ·They process digital information and make users 44 to use it at once.
Size ·One microchip with billions of transistors is smaller than a button. ·The bigger the chip features created, the 45 transistors can fit on a chip.
Passage 10
(2024·四川成都·二模)阅读下面短文,完成题后的表格。
When you feel disappointed, you should know it is natural and normal, and everyone will experience it in their life. Sometimes life brings us a difficult hand, and events and trials (考验) we can’t control happen to us. Other times it is our own actions themselves that cause our trials. Even so, disappointment is part of life’s journey. Whether we have a better life depends on how we deal with it. Here are some steps to help us to make our journey more enjoyable.
Firstly, redefine (重新定义) our rules. It is considered that everyone has his own “rule” in their mind. If our own rules are too perfect, then they will disappoint us greatly. When we feel disappointed, it is wise to review and redefine our rules. Try an encouraging rule: I am happy and I am successful since I have made my greatest efforts.
Secondly, remind ourselves now and then of the reasons why we are working towards the goal. It is of great help to remember the reasons when we feel down. By revisiting those reasons, we will likely renew our promises and not get hung up on the disappointment of the moment.
Thirdly, think about our larger vision (视野) and recommit (重新提交) to it. It really helps.
Disappointment is a very valuable experience, which serves as a good educator and makes
us more able to meet the challenges of the future.
Finally, reset and have a new start. It helps prevent us from getting into self-pity and force us to get up and move forward. Don’t live in the past. Take what the past has taught us and keep moving. Wake up the very next day as if our whole life is ahead of us and we have the chance to restart.
Nothing that happened in the past can stop us from creating the life that we have always desired or from achieving the goals that we are working towards.
Learning to deal with disappointment
Introduction It’s too natural and normal to feel disappointed and learning to deal with it is part of a fulfilling life.
Causes of disappointment Events and trials in life are sometimes out of 46 . Sometimes our trials are caused by our own actions.
47 to dealing with disappointment Redefine our rules 48 disappoint ourselves, try some encouraging ones
Remind our whys Being reminded often of our whys helps us renew our promises and get over the disappointment.
Recommit to our vision 49 makes us to be more able to meet the challenges of the future.
Reset and start a new life Instead of living in the past, we take what we have learned from the past and move forward.
Conclusion Dealing with disappointment properly can improve 50 of our life and make our life journey enjoyable.

There is no object which is more closely connected with us than the furniture in our rooms from ancient to now. The bed we sleep in every day, the table we have food at, the chair we take rest in …they all add fun to our daily life. And in turn, we have given them new meaning in the long river of years.
People used to sit on the floor before the Wei and Jin Dynasties, so the furniture at that time was relatively (相对地) low. The bed was the most widely used in the room.
At that time the bed was used for sitting and lying. Then there came the bed couch.
In fact, as early as the Zhou Dynasty, a kind of furniture that has both practical value and traditional art beauty was born —the screen. By the Han Dynasty, the use of the screen had increased, and it could act as a partition (分隔物). During the Tang Dynasty, the screen began to enter the house of common people, becoming a necessary part of their daily life.
People’s lifestyle started to change during the Tang Dynasty. People started to get used to sitting on a relatively higher place with their feet hanging down. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the traditional Chinese furniture industry reached its top, and truly pushed the Chinese furniture to the highest achievement of art.
In fact, the traditional furniture shows the effect (影响) of traditional culture and human-centered thoughts. So, we can feel the courage and resilience (单力) from the traditional
furniture, which shows the wisdom of ancient Chinese culture. Besides, each of the patterns in these pieces of furniture has its own meaning to express.

Passage 13
(2024·江苏南京·一模)The twenty-first century is already turning out to be the century of modern technologies. The technological revolution (革命) that started after World War II is now developing more quickly. Computing and other technological development is beginning to reach into influence and take over nearly every part of our lives. The two main influences modern computing has had on our lives are in the areas of economics (经济学) and communications.
Technology has led to big changes in economic and business systems and operations (经营). Businesses now have to be using cloud services or machine learning or risk failure. As a result, every big company bases its operations on computing. For example, Coca Cola, Huawei and Tencent sell different products and services, yet they all share one basic feature—without modern computing services, their operations would break down. New technologies play an important role in economies. China and many other developing countries have large IT industries, which drive their economies. What’s more, developed countries, including Germany and the United States, are moving from an industrial-based economy to a computing and IT-based one.
The other important influence of technological change is in the way of communication. For
example, in the past, people wrote letters or talked on fixed phones, which slowed down the communication process. Now they send e-mails and text messages, or chat using mobile phones. Instead of waiting weeks for a letter or spending time finding a fixed phone, we can communicate right away. New forms of communication are cheaper or free. As a result, now people who live thousands of kilometres away from each other can communicate as much as they want at any time.
In conclusion, computing and new technologies have had a great influence on our lives in many ways. And they have had the greatest influence in business and communication. In the future, if technology continues developing at such speed, our business practices and methods of communication will have even greater changes. It is already starting to bring changes to other parts of our lives, such as transportation and health.
What influence has technology had on our lives
Introduction > Great changes have taken place in technologies 61 World War II. >Computing has made a great 62 to economics and communications.
63 of main influences >Operations of big companies 64 on computing. >Large IT industries 65 countries like China to develop their economies. >New technologies have 66 Germany and USA into a computing and IT-based economy. > Technological change makes communication 67 and faster than before. >We spend 68 on communication as well. >People can communicate with each other 69 they want.
Conclusion The more 70 technology is developing, the greater changes we will have.

Traditional Chinese Medicine, also called “TCM,” is an ancient system of traditional medicine and practice that have developed in China over thousands of years. It is a catch-all term for a variety of medical treatments and practices.
In TCM theories, all the different organs (器官) and systems within the body form an interconnected, organic whole. Each part of this whole can be described as either yin or yang. The imbalances of yin and yang can lead to health problems. So TCM practitioners (实践者) don’t treat a certain kind of disease separated from the others. They look at the body as a whole and try to find out the underlying causes of the disease.
Another important theory of TCM is the five-element theory which is used to understand the interactions between elements within our bodies. People’s organs, emotions and diet are closely related to the five elements.
Basically, there are two relations among the five elements—generation and restriction. Generation means a supportive relationship. For example, water supports wood. Restriction refers to a controlling relationship. For example, water controls fire. In order not to have too much or too little of any element, it’s important to know how generation and restriction work. For example, too much anger is harmful to the liver. To reduce anger, you can search for fun and joy because fire controls metal.
Five-element theory and things related to the elements
As the treasure of our Chinese culture, TCM is never out of date. A survey by China Youth Daily showed that 93. 3 percent of the 1, 000 young people who took part had tried different TCM treatments. Between Western medicine and TCM, young people often choose TCM due to its efficacy (疗效) .
TCM began to get familiar to the American public in 1971 through an article by James
Reston, a New York Times reporter who received acupuncture treatment for diseases while traveling in China with Henry Kissinger. Since then, TCM has become popular in different countries around the world. Switzerland is one of them. According to China Daily, over 20 years ago, TCM started to become well-known in the Swiss health resorts of Bad Ragaz and Baden, and then it spread throughout Switzerland.
It’s a system of 71 and practice with a long history in China.

Forever Family
“Would you like to go to see Rhys and take him for ice cream ” my dad asked; I froze. I love my younger brother very much, but I hadn’t been in public with him for well over a year and a half. The thought worried me.
Rhys is 14 and seriously cognitively impaired (认知能力受损的) . He was diagnosed with a rare genetic mutation (突变) at birth. When I was young, my parents and I picked him up from his new long-term care home at the end of our busy weekends to spend some time with him, usually at our home.
After picking Rhys up and taking the short car trip, we arrived at the ice cream store. I held onto Rhys in his chair while Dad placed our order.
Rhys loves to grab things. He grabbed a woman walking by. I said sorry at once, full of embarrassment.
After getting our ice cream, we sat outside. At this point, I was distressed (心烦的) and just wanted to go home. Dad could tell that I was upset. He silently understood and let me be.
But then I saw a father and daughter walking along the plaza toward the ice cream store. The girl’s movements seemed strangely familiar. I noticed she was much too excited, behaving similarly to Rhys.
Watching those two made me change. I realized I wasn’t the only one in this situation: out in public with a family member with special needs. I smiled as I watched the father and daughter just enjoying their day and not focusing on what others thought. They acted just like every other “typical” family. I suddenly realized that I shouldn’t let what others think about Rhys ruin our time together.
There is so much uncertainty with Rhys’ rare genetic mutation. We aren’t certain what challenges he will face in the future. With each visit, I notice how much we have both changed, whether it’s his little mustache (小胡子) coming in or my growing independence as I move on to university. Rhys will always be my brother. We are family. There is no shame in that.

Since the sound of drums echoes that of thunder, it was believed that playing drums could attract rain. So the instrument was used to pray for good weather and to “communicate” with them.
Drums also played a part in the war. Because of a strong resonance effect (共振作用), the drum’s sound could go very far while increasing fear in the heart of the enemies. So the drum was used as a military booster for a long time.
In the Tang and Song dynasties, the society was developing fast and drums were widely used. The national band, drama, folk art, song and dance, boat racing, lion dance, festival gathering and labor competition were all together with the beats of drums. The sound of drums became synonymous (同义的) with celebrations, filling hearts with joy.

E-waste means old electronics like computers, phones, and TVs that people throw away. When new electronics come out, many old ones are thrown away. These old electronics have harmful materials inside. They can hurt the environment if they get into the ground or water.
Electronics need special metals that are hard to find. Getting these metals from the earth can cause a lot of pollution. As we make more electronics, these metals become even harder to find. However, we can recycle these metals from old electronics instead of digging for new ones.
A group called WEEE is trying to show how serious the e-waste problem is. WEEE says thrown-away e-waste like rare (稀有的) metals is worth $57 billion each year. Also, UN researchers studied “invisible” e-waste, which people don’t notice much. They found that 1/6 of all e-waste is “invisible” and worth about $9.5 billion a year. Even though it’s called “invisible,” it’s a lot, weighing about 19.8 billion pounds.
Surprisingly, toys lead the “invisible” e-waste group, according to the study. In all, toys make up about 35% of the “invisible” e-waste. Every year, about 7.3 billion electronic toys are thrown away worldwide. But the problem is far larger than just toys. Home alarms, smoke alarms and power tools also lead to “invisible” e-waste.
WEEE is hoping that as more people and governments pay attention to e-waste, they will make a much greater effort to make good use of old electronics before they are thrown away. After all, there are many valuable parts in them.
Definition (定义): The old electronics that are thrown away. 91 : ·Harmful materials in it will pollute the ground or water. ·Special metals in it will be 92 .

Seeing them in the wild, you might be surprised at first because they look like giant guinea pigs, which are in fact one of their closest relatives. Capybaras’ bodies are covered in reddish-brown fur. When swimming around, thanks to their small eyes, noses and hairless cars which are high on their heads, they’re able to see the above-water things around them. That’s why they can protect themselves from danger easily. A capybara weighs around 50 kilograms and it can grow to 1.5 meters in length. Female capybaras are usually a little heavier than the males.

Capybaras are good swimmers and love to play with water. They usually live in groups of 10 to 20 (and up to 100 during the dry season). They also like chatting with each other very much.
