By the light of the Moon on a warm night in May, James Wilson stood on a beach in Trinidad in the Caribbean. He watched a leatherback sea turtle (棱皮海龟)slowly moving onto the beach. “You could just see how much effort (努力) it took for it to make its way up there,” the 16-year-old said. “It was quite amazing.”
Every year, leatherback sea turtles lay their eggs on beaches in Trinidad. In the summer and autumn, they swim to Nova Scotia, Canada for food. But it can be a dangerous journey. They sometimes get caught in fishing tools. And their population is getting smaller because of pollution and climate change. According to Kathleen Martin from the Canadian Sea Turtle Network, even though leatherback sea turtles are an ancient species, we still know very little about them, like how quickly they grow and how long they live.
James is part of a group of 12 volunteers who collect information on the endangered species, such as their size and movement, in the hope of saving them.
In Trinidad, James gets to watch the turtles on the beach. When they pay their attention to laying their eggs, James and the other volunteers get to work. They put tags(标签) on the turtles so that scientists can find them easily later when they return. James also has a chance to see the baby turtles. After coming out of the eggs, the baby turtles try hard to get in the water no matter how big the waves are. “They are lovely and strong-minded,” James said.
James loves turtles and he hopes everyone can do something to help. He says although it’s not possible for everyone to do volunteer work like him, people can help the environment in other ways, like picking up waste.
