“Sorry. I’m already going to the pool,” Stephanie said. “Toni and Vanessa and I are going.” She smiled, but it wasn’t her nice smile. She walked away to join Toni and Vanessa, and Rosa was left standing alone.
After school, at dance class, Stephanie talked and laughed with the other dancers as they stretched (拉伸) in front of the mirror. Rosa wanted to join them, but she still felt too unhappy.
Then she noticed Kiara, the new girl, standing with one leg up on the barre. Rosa joined her and began stretching too. Kiara smiled, and Rosa smiled back. Rosa tried not to check the mirror to see if Stephanie had noticed. “I hope she feels left out,” Rosa thought.
The next morning, when Rosa boarded the bus, Stephanie was sitting on their usual seat. Stephanie quickly moved her backpack off the seat to make room for Rosa. But Rosa walked past her and slid (滑动) into the empty seat next to Kiara. “How does it feel now ” Rosa thought.
On the bus ride, Rosa discovered that Kiara was not the quiet girl Rosa had thought she was. She talked a lot—about her little brother, about the tree house her uncle had built, and even about swimming.
“I love swimming!” Rosa said.
“Me too,” Kiara sad. “My dad said he’d take my brother and me to the nearby pool tonight.”
“It’s wonderful there,” Rosa said. “Sometimes the lifeguards put giant floats in the pool to climb on and slide off. I want to have a pool party there for my birthday this year!”
“Maybe you can come with us tonight,” Kiara said. “I’ll ask my dad.”
“That would be fun. I’ll ask my mum,” said Rosa.
When they stepped off the bus, Stephanie was standing on the sidewalk. “Did you still want to go swimming tonight ” Stephanie asked Rosa.
“Here’s my chance,” Rosa thought. “I’m already going,” she said. “Kiara and I are going together.” She smiled. Somehow she knew it wasn’t her nice smile. There, she thought.

Rosa’s heart went down and her cheeks (脸颊) began to burn.
Why didn’t she feel happy Getting even was what she’d wanted, wasn’t it

Stephanie brightened, “I’d like that.”
Rosa smiled, “Kiara, meet my friend Stephanie.”

The Forest Eye Project aims to create the largest living forest feature in England by growing 5, 000 alder, beech and maple trees into the shape of a child’s eye. The trees are being planted in Dalby Forest, North Yorkshire, with the help of local young people. The trees will form an eye 300 metres wide that will be seen from the sky in about six years, when they have grown.
The project hopes to focus on the importance of young people’s ideas for creating a healthy, natural environment. ① It was designed by a company called Sand in Your Eye and has been created by Forestry England, an organization that protects forests and woodlands.
Josephine, director at Forestry England, says, “Having the gaze of a child growing in the heart of this beautiful and ever-changing forest is a powerful symbol of how we need to listen and reply to the needs and vision of future generations (代).” ②
③ As well as providing a home for wildlife, trees make oxygen that humans need to breathe. When the trees have grown, they will provide a place for lots of wild animals, like bats, birds and small mammals, to live. The Forest Eye will also create a space for people to explore and connect with nature.
Jamie, artistic director at Sand in Your Eye, has plenty of experience creating pieces of “land art”. These are huge drawings and sculptures made from grass, ice and sand. He says the trees are his paint. ④ “Our work is about encouraging people to think deeply and reply emotionally to some of the biggest problems facing us, including the climate crisis (气候危机).”
Wardley also plans to develop the eye into an even bigger project. “We badly wanted to create the whole face of a young girl at the same scale, measuring 2, 000 metres across. Those trees that are planted in the Forest Eye are the very beginning of this,” he says.

There are many other kinds of intelligence besides intellect, and one important type is emotional intelligence, called EQ for short. Some people have naturally good EQ skills. Meanwhile, many people need to work on them. The good news is that EQ is a combination of several different skills and everyone can get better, if they know what to do.
Be aware of your emotions. People feel many different emotions all day long. Some feelings, like surprise, last just a few seconds. Others may stay longer, creating a mood like happiness or sadness. Noticing emotions helps you manage them. Practise recognizing emotions as you feel them. Saying to yourself “I feel thankful”, “I’m upset” in your mind would be a useful way to do that.
Manage emotional reactions. People all get angry, and everyone feels blue. Often, it’s more important to express how you feel. But managing your reaction means knowing when, where, and how to express yourself. When you’re able to manage emotions, you can self-control to hold in your feelings if now is not the right time or place to express them. Someone who has good EQ knows it can break relationships to react to emotions in a way that’s disrespectful or harmful.
Understand how others feel and why. People are naturally designed to try to notice others. Part of EQ is about being able to imagine others’ feelings in certain situations. It is also understanding why they feel the way they do. Being able to imagine what emotions a person is likely to be feeling is an important ability. It helps you care about others and build good relationships. You’ll also know what to say and how to behave around someone who is feeling strong emotions with it.
