教学重点: 1. Apply different listening skills to deepen the understanding of the listening material. 2. Explore and understand the habit cycle and learn how to change bad habits by using the habit cycle.
教学过程
Step I Warming-up Watch a short video about two men’s bad habits, and ask students two questions. 1. What bad habits does the man have Suggested answers: Junk food addict/Overeating/Lack of exercise/Staying up too late 2. How does the “habit cycle” work Step II Listening Activity 1 listen for general idea According the information, can you predict what the following conversation is mainly about. Suggested answers: A doctor gives advice to two students on habits and lifestyle Attention: While listening, please remember some key words to find the general idea. Step III Listening Activity 2 listen for specific information Listen to the conversation again; try to get some specific information to complete the chart on students’ handout. Suggested answers: Student 1: sleeping; to fall asleep; going to bed; pick up the phone. Student 2: feels depressed; a little overweight; finishing dinner; Summary: How to change a bad habit Suggested answers: 1. Replace the old negative routine with something positive. 2. We need to show some discipline and take small steps. 3. The most successful way to change is not sudden, but over a period of time. Step IV Activity 4 Listen again and answer two questions. 1. What is the expert’s bad habit Do you think it is a health problem 2. What would you advise the expert to do to control this habit Suggested answers: Q1. Drinking too much coffee. It is a health problem because too much is bad for one’s heart and sleep. Q2. Change coffee for another drink; Do some exercise to stimulate his body; Change his coffee cup into a smaller one; Drink some weaker coffee Step V Talking Activity 1 Read for expressions Suggested answers: Show problem/give advice/accept advice/refuse advice Activity 2 Expressions that may be of help: Asking for and giving advice: My problem is…; I’m having problems with…; I cannot stop…; Please give me some advice about…; I think/believe you should…; So, why don’t you… ; Well, have you thought about… ; In my opinion, … Accepting and refusing advice: Sure, I’ll do that; That’s a good idea! Please make a conversation about how to change his bad habit with student A.
