My 100 Days Without a Mobile Phone
When was the last time you left home without your mobile phone Can you imagine yourself living a month, or even a year without checking your mobile phone from time to time
As a busy modern person with lots of social connections, plans and responsibilities, I just cannot afford to not be in touch with the rest of the world. Staying connected to other people is a big part of my life. However, sometimes it can be bothersome (恼人的).
One day I discovered I was terribly tired out. I tried turning notifications (通知) off. But the fear of missing out something important made me check the phone more often than before. So, I simply stopped using my phone.
Well, to tell the truth, it was not simple at all. For the first couple of days, I had a big fear that all of my friends would soon forget about me. When I had a free moment, I had no idea what to get myself distracted (分心的) with, and the worries mixed with boredom kept bothering me.
However, after three weeks without a mobile phone, I started noticing changes — changes which I liked, and which drove me to not just continue the experiment, but in fact to reorganize some of my habits.
First of all, I noticed that I became much more focused (专注的). Before, while doing something, I would often find myself wondering what was going on online. After a month of staying away from my mobile phone, I found that the urge (冲动) was already not that strong and that my ability to focus improved.
I discovered that the world is a beautiful place. Before, I would look at it through my camera mostly: take a photo, post it, get some likes. Now, I saw beautiful people walking around and I sensed the seasons change. I could understand the actual beauty of the world, and I did not need anyone else to prove the value of this beauty through likes or shares.
Now, as 100 days have passed, I can say that the experiment was worth it. I am planning to stay away from my phone for as long as possible.
1.What made the writer check the phone more often than before
2.When did the writer start noticing his changes
3.What does the writer plan to do with his phone after the experiment
4.Would you like to follow the writer’s example Why or why not (Please give two reasons.)

Working Out through Online Videos
Physical exercise is good for our mind, body and spirit. Today, working out through online videos is becoming very popular. Since the Internet is widely used, it’s very easy for us to do so. That means we can work out anytime anywhere.
One of my friends, Lin Fei. followed short workout videos to do daily exercise. “With live programs, I feel like working out with my friends, which encourages me to hold on to the last minute.” she said. Another friend of mine, Michael, told me that workout videos let him feel so comfortable. “I have a fear of working out at the gym(健身房)because I don’t like being watched by others. Working out at home makes working out much more enjoyable.” he said.
With their examples, I decided to give it a try. When I told my plan to my elder sister, a P.E. teacher, she reminded me that workout videos could be helpful but might still carry some problems.
“Without being with someone in person, you will be less willing (愿意的)to work out to your best. Working out at the gym allows you to have advice in real time and get pushed harder.” my sister said to me. “Well, if you really want to have a try. first, choose proper programs or videos. That’s very important. And then ask your friends for advice. Their experiences can give you a good sight into what you can expect. Anyway, don’t be addicted(沉迷的)to it. You should try different ways to work out to be healthy.”
At her suggestions, I finally followed an online workout program with personalized help that is held for three months. After the first period of training, I felt it very practical and helpful when I put in the right amount (量)
of work along with a strong pared with going to the gym, using online videos to work out is a much cheaper and time-saving choice. But it can be difficult sometimes when I’m too lazy or too busy to stick to it.

Screen-Free Days
I remember the first time I suggested screen-free days in our school to some of our student leaders. Jokingly, I said to the group, “What do you think if we go a week without using our laptops or smartphones ”
They laughed, and one of them said, “No way, Mr. White. They would be too much.” I could feel their worry, and told them that I was only considering single screen-free days. Even that idea left them feeling upset.
According to a survey we did, most students in our school spend about six hours a day on screens. Many of my students start their day by checking their smartphones. I often see them looking at their phones when getting off the bus or at parents’ drop-off, they can’t use their own “screens” at school. They usually work on computers at school for at least two hours during the day.
It’s clear that our students spend a lot of time on screens. We do see the benefits of technology. However, we teachers also want to make sure that students have balanced learning and social experiences away from their screens. That’s why we have come up with the idea of screen-free days.
During the course of the year, we have built in several screen-free days that require us to make different plans for our students about how they will communicate with one another and the world around them without “screens”. For some teachers, this means bringing back a valuable lesson plan that has been put off for some time because it is “out of date”. Others have designed something completely new.
Fun activities, for example, card games and room escape(密室逃脱) games, are organized at school. In these activities, students socialize without smartphones and have face-to-face communication without checking on “likes” they’ve got online. These fun activities also make it possible for the whole grade to enjoy the company of their friends with no smartphones.
After our first screen-free day, students mentioned that they were surprised they enjoyed it. Finding ways to help our students connect with one another is important.
While technology is already part of our world, it shouldn’t play such an important role in a learner’s life.

(2024·北京·一模)Ways to Fight Tiredness
Everyone gets tired—it’s a normal part of human existence. It can make us grouchy (满腹牢骚的) and grumpy at the end of the day, but a good night’s sleep will often leave us feeling well rested. However, sometimes we feel more than just tiredness. We can get overtired (过度劳累) and it may affect our daily lives-but what can we do about it Here are some things that may stop you getting overtired.
Being very tired frequently could be the result of lifestyle choices: poor diet, lack of exercise, or an inefficient routine. For some people, changes to their habits and routines could help them to beat tiredness. First, let’s look at physical health. According to the UK National Health Service (NHS) website, eating healthy meals
and snacks regularly, around 3-4 times per day, could improve your energy levels. Giving your body the energy it needs could help you to be more excited, and therefore, less tired. If you’re feeling overtired, you might not want to exercise. However, regular physical activity may actually mean you are less tired in general.
Activities like jogging or cycling could also help you get fitter. And being more active could help you to lose weight, which can also aid you in the battle against tiredness. Those extra kilos from being overweight put a strain on your heart, which can lead to you feeling more tired.
Another thing that can leave us feeling exhausted (精疲力竭的) and fatigued (疲惫不堪的) is stress. Reducing your stress levels may help you to feel less tired on a regular basis. Taking up an activity like yoga or going for a walk could help you to unwind and feel more refreshed. And you may think if you’re feeling tired, the Royal College of Psychiatrists recommends anyone feeling tired to cut down on their caffeine intake, especially after mid-afternoon, to get better sleep at night.
Finally, if you do find yourself feeling overtired constantly for days or weeks, you may be suffering from fatigue or exhaustion. If so, getting a few good nights’ sleep can work.
15.What will often leave us feeling well rested
16.How often do people eat healthy meals to improve energy levels
17.What can we do if we suffer from fatigue or exhaustion
18.Would you like to follow the writer’s ways to fight tiredness Why or why not ( at least two reasons.)

Smile to the Lost Present
The one who has never gained something will never experience the pain of losing whatever that something is. That is pretty clear. But I consider the absence of the joy of “having” to be more miserable (痛苦的) than that of having lost something after having once had it.
When I was six years old, a lovely doll caught my eye. My mom refused to buy it for me, so I took a “job”, my first, selling sweets in a park. Holding the doll which had been earned by myself, I was the happiest girl in the world. However, the doll ended up losing during a family trip. My tears couldn’t bring it back.
In Grade Nine, my closest friend became estranged (疏远) from me. We had shared our innermost secrets with each other and supported one another through difficult times. At the time she kept me at a distance, I was very disappointed and even wished I had never known her. Accustomed to our friendship and her company, I didn’t know what to do without her at one time.
Recalling the past, I’m not that sad about those lost treasures now. Instead, I am thankful for them for making my life colorful. I am proud of the persevering little girl who managed to acquire her coveted doll. And the memory of my ex-friend’s warm smile continues to encourage me from time to time. How much would I have missed in life if I hadn’t bought that doll or hadn’t befriended that girl
Experiences are of great importance to our lives. The world is so changeable that nothing is able to last forever. Nothing actually belongs to us except our own feelings. How much regret do you think exists in this unfilled blank which we create for ourselves when we give up on our reasonable wants just because of our fears of potential loss For me, nothing could be more miserable than a risk-free but boring life in which you have the constant desire for something but have not the courage to make it your own!
Face peacefully the fact that, while the treasure itself is gone, the memories are still very much alive. Walk out of the shadow and accept the new present that is being delivered to you. Let these wonderful past moments shine like stars in the night sky.
Don’t cry because it’s over; smile because it once happened.
19.What did the writer do after her mom refused to buy the doll for her
20.How did the writer feel when her closest friend became estranged from her
21.Why is the writer thankful for the lost treasures
22.Do you agree with the writer Why or why not (Please give two reasons.)

I’m no literary Luddite (反对新技术的人). I bought an iPad with my first paycheck from my first full-time job after graduating from college. But after two years of reading occasionally on the device, I gave it away to my brother. It just wasn’t the right reading experience for me.
Technology lovers choose e-readers over books because e-readers are more convenient. They’re right. It is objectively easier to carry a 7oz (盎司) tablet with thousands and thousands of books at your fingertips than it is to carry five books in your bag, which is exactly what I did on vacation.
But I don’t read for convenience. I read to learn more about the world and myself. I have made friends by seeing a book cover in a cafe and noticing that it was the same title that I was reading. I can trace my life by the books that have been my companions. When I open an old book and come across my previously scribbled notes — shaky ones when I’ve been reading on the subway, covered in sand if I read it at the beach, next to a train ticket if I was traveling — I am able to add an extra level of personal depth and experience to the story I am about to reread. It’s just not enough to simply consuming the story, which is what e-readers are great for.
When I read paper books, I hold onto them for long periods of time. I just purchased a new bookshelf specially for my “to be read” pile. Once in a while, I go through the process of deciding which books to donate (捐赠), but usually the idea of parting with a book feels like giving away a part of my soul (灵魂).
Physical books may not be the most efficient medium, but they are the most meaningful. So keep your Kindle, by all means. But I’ll be happy hoarding (贮存,聚藏) with my library.
23.Why did the writer give his iPad to his brother
24.What does the writer want to learn by reading
25.How does the writer feel when parting with a book
26.Which do you prefer, e-books or paper books And why (Please give two reasons)

How Audiobooks Help Readers and Inspire a Love of Books
Not long ago, one of my third graders Jack was struggling (挣扎) to find books he liked. His teacher reported that he kept choosing books that were too simple or too difficult for him to manage on his own.
I visited with Jack one morning to find out what he was looking for. He started telling me that he just didn’t
like to read, but after a bit of conversation, he shared that he actually loved books about dragons.
I thought of the Dragon Masters series. I took the first book off the shelf. When I opened the book, there were pictures to help him understand the story more easily. He was excited. We sat down to read a bit together, but it quickly became clear that it was hard for him to read. He was upset, but I told him I had an idea.
We downloaded Sora which is a reading app with audiobooks and searched for an audiobook of the first Dragon Masters book. We printed it and picked up a bookmark to hold under each line as the narrator (讲述者) read so he could follow along. Two days later, he was back in the library happily. The last time I checked, he was nearing the end of the series.
I have advised teachers to use audiobooks with struggling readers. However some people hold that audiobooks are not a substitute (替代品) for silent reading. I disagree. When a student struggles to decode (解码), the interest in reading disappears very quickly. Audiobooks can help students by allowing their joy of reading to increase as they continue to improve their reading skills in class.
“If we give kids an audiobook, won’t that make them depend on them forever ” The answer is, I deeply doubt it. When we used training wheels, they didn’t prevent us from learning how to ride a bike. They provided support as we got confidence, and we learned to let them go and ride off into the sunset at the end of the street. If a student is enjoying audiobooks as part of their learning, the student will be a real reader when working with teachers to increase confidence in written text.
27.What kind of books did Jack like to read
28.Why was Jack excited when the writer opened the book
29.How could Jack follow along with the narrator

My husband, Tyler, and I decided to raise a guide dog puppy (幼犬). After attending several meetings with Anina Green, the guide dog club leader, I eagerly signed up to become a raiser and patiently waited for the arrival of my puppy. Then, one day, Anina informed me that I would get my puppy on April 27.
That day, Tyler and I went to Anina’s house. In the kitchen, we saw the puppy, Escort, sleeping on the floor. Holding him for the first time was magical. He was so soft and sleepy—and huge! Escort was larger than a lot of full-grown dogs.
We attended a weekly puppy kindergarten to learn how to train Escort. From the time we got the puppy until he was about 6 months old, he was on a leash (牵引绳). When we were watching TV on the sofa or brushing teeth, the leash was always in our hands. During the first eight weeks, Tyler and I mostly stayed at home, taught Escort orders, and held his leash.
The guide dog club is really like a family—a family with a lot of wonderful, well-behaved dogs. We traveled to various places together with these dogs. Escort’s first group outing was a trip to tour the city museum. We also went to a shopping mall, a baseball game, a fire station, and the airport to practice going through security. With all the help from our club, Escort went from a sleepy little puppy to a dependable companion (伙伴) when he was 8 months old.
When Escort was one year old, he could walk with a perfect loose (松的) leash, follow our orders and always make the right choices. It was time for us to drop him off at the Guide Dogs for the Blind campus to go through more formal (正式的) guide training and get matched with someone who needed him. We had fallen in love with the puppy and couldn’t bear giving him away, but we had to say goodbye to him.
When I see pictures of Escort with the woman he has been placed with, I feel very happy. It doesn’t hurt that he’s not with me—seeing him going on adventures with his new owner every day makes it all worth it. The thought that he will improve her life makes me very proud.
31.What was Escort like when the writer first saw him
32.What did the writer and her husband do during the first eight weeks of raising Escort
33.How does the writer feel when she knows Escort can help his new owner
34.What do you think of the writer and her husband Why do you think so (Please give two reasons.)
(2024·北京西城·一模)The summer of 2023 saw record-breaking heatwaves across many parts of the world. As temperatures continue to rise, the effect of carbon emissions (碳排放) on the environment has become a
big problem. Studies show the travel industry is responsible for about 10% of these emissions, with air travel alone causing about 2. 8% of them.
To address this problem, Intrepid—a travel company, has suggested a “carbon passport” in its recent report. The idea behind it is that each traveler would have a yearly carbon limit, and nobody can go over that limit. Using carbon passports means travelers will have to take fewer flights to lower their “carbon footprint”—the CO2 emissions from their actions. At present, the carbon footprint of each person is about four tons yearly on average (平均). To limit temperature rise to acceptable levels by 2050, our goal should be below two tons.
In line with this goal, some European countries are taking steps to reduce air travel. In France, local flights are canceled if the same trips can be made by train in 2. 5 hours or less. In Belgium, additional charges (收费) are added to short-distance flights to encourage other forms of travel.
Intrepid considers the idea of a “carbon passport” effective with more people involved in. Travelers will receive information about their carbon footprints and change their travel habits. And businesses will be pushed to use more green practices. Alex Hawkins, one of the writers of the report, says, “These passports will make us think more about how our trips influence the environment.”
When it comes to monitoring everyone’s carbon emission, Anna Abelson, a professor of the New York University thinks it would be a challenge in terms of logistics (统计). Even if we work that out, there are still some worries. For example, people might not be able to take jobs far away or visit family in other cities as often. Some even worry about privacy and personal freedom if we start monitoring and limiting people’s air travel.
“Getting everyone on board with carbon passports won’t be easy.” Hawkins added, “It would need support from lots of different people and groups all over the world.” However, even with the challenges, the idea of carbon passports shows the need for us to take action together to fight climate change and make travel eco-friendlier.

36.What is the idea behind a “carbon passport”
