文档简介

Passage 1
Just breathe. Sound familiar Whether trying to decrease stress, anxiety, and muscle tension or increase our focus, we are frequently encouraged to breathe.
There is a good reason for this, particularly when it comes to muscle tension and pain. __1__ When we are stressed, our muscles tense, and this tension can increase pain. Pain can also cause stress, increasing muscle tension and creating more pain. Also, it is common to hold our breath when we are stressed or in pain. __2__
So, one helpful way to manage stress and pain is to practice relaxing our muscles and nervous system via breathing exercises. While engaging in longer relaxation exercises is beneficial, practicing brief exercises is practical.
Breathe Slowly and Rhythmically
__3__ Imagine your breath is a wave in the ocean that is slowly coming into shore and then slowly going back into the ocean. See if you can practice breathing slowly and steadily for about two to five minutes.
Lengthen the Exhale (呼) Portion of Your Breath
The exhale is like a brake for our nervous system, helping it slow down. Practice making the exhale portion of the breath longer than the inhale: For example, if you naturally inhale to a count of three, practice slowly exhaling to a count of five.
Breathe from Your Belly (腹部)
Belly breathing tends to be the most relaxing type of breath. When you breathe using your belly, you stimulate the vagus nerve which activates the relaxation response. __4__ Therefore, you feel at ease and comfortable.
It is important not to wait until tension and pain increase to practice these exercises. __5__ So just slow down and breathe on.
A.Practice breathing in and out at a slow speed.
B.Unfortunately, doing so increases pain and stress.
C.The exhale part of the breath is the most relaxing.
D.Breathing from your nose only helps you calm down.
E.Physical pain and emotional stress often go hand in hand.
F.They will be most effective when you are not in much pain.
G.This will reduce your heart rate and blood pressure and lower stress.
Passage 2
You may feel your backbreaking and low paid part time summer job isn't worth you effort. __1__ Here are some you can enjoy.
When landing a job, you'll put yourself into unfamiliar territory and learn how to survive and develop there. __2__ Whether it's learning a new skill or dealing with a tough boss, you must rely on yourself for solutions, through which you can build up your self belief.
Hanging around all summer is a great way to relax, but it won't contribute to your time management skill. __3__ This skill helps you decide what should be accomplished in a day and learn how to handle those things to make it happen, which involves prioritizing, planning and judging how much you can realistically finish. The best way to develop this skill is through practice. With loads of free time, you'll likely not have to flex your time management muscles.
__4__ Take it easy. Most people change their minds many times before settling on their long term career. Getting out into the workforce as a waiter at a cafe may not help you see what it'll be like as a doctor but you'll figure out whether you like to work with people or whether you can work efficiently under pressure. A summer job helps zero in on your likes and dislikes to evaluate your strengths and resolve your weaknesses.
Chances are that your social circle is comprised of people in your age group. However, in a job, you'll work with diverse groups of people, from whom you'll learn varying viewpoints and experiences. __5__
A.Working will, though.
B.But such jobs uplift willpower.
C.Not sure of your future profession
D.Does a summer job help with college
E.Actually, its added bonuses go beyond your wallet.
F.There're various confidence boosting challenges to overcome.

Passage 3
Have you ever had a staring contest It can be difficult to keep your eyes open for long periods of time because of the natural tendency to blink. But why do we need to blink
There are two main reasons. First, blinking clears away dust from the eyes. __1__ It might be under the eyelid or something that blew in.
Second, blinking lubricates (润滑) the eye balls. The eyes need a smooth surface for light to properly focus on, so vision becomes clear. Blinking releases a tear film—which mostly consists of water , oil and mucus—to keep the surface of the eyeball smooth. __2__ The tear film also supplies oxygen to the eye. The film also helps prevent the eye from becoming infected.
Blinking happens naturally. It takes the average person 400 milliseconds to blink. Most people blink somewhere between 10 and 20 times per minute, usually around 15 or 16 times. __3__
For example, you may blink more frequently if there's something in your eye. Certain conditions can make it feel like there's something in your eye, which makes you blink more.
Some people have habitual involuntary movements that lead them to blink frequently. __4__ If you have uncorrected vision problems, you may blink more often because your eyes are naturally trying to correct the unclear vision.
If there is damage to the facial nerve, which is responsible for closing the eyelid, a person may blink more slowly or less often. Tiredness and some medications can cause a similar effect. __5__ For example, when reading, people tend to blink at the end of a sentence rather than in the middle.
A.It also prevents the eye from drying out.
B.If there's a foreign body, it helps get rid of it.
C.And stress and anxiety can make you blink more, too.
D.Blinking more often than needed can give brain extra stress.
E.Pink eye and other types of infection can also cause damage on eyes.
F.However, there are some circumstances that make people blink more or less often.
G.Focusing on something like watching a movie, you may blink less to strengthen your focus.
Passage 4

●__1__ Talk to your doctor about what types of alerts or weather events you should be looking out for when it comes to heat, stress interactions with medications, or exposures to heat, cold and virus.
●Prepare an emergency supply kit. This is especially important if you live in an area where flooding, hurricanes, or wildfires break out easily. Your family need to be safe. __2__
●Eat less meat, and take more vitamins. Research found that the diets low in meat and high in fruits and vegetables were linked with less greenhouse gas emissions. __3__ Therefore, you should reduce people's vulnerability in high temperatures.
●Reduce the amount of single use plastics in your life. The Natural Resources Defense Council says that small individual choices can add up. __4__ For example, you can carry grocery bags and a reusable water bottle and cook more at home.
●Pay attention to heat warnings, and find ways to stay cool. __5__ If you have airconditioning, make sure it is working, or find out a place with air conditioning, like a shopping mall, public library, or cooling shelter or community. Make sure you check on your friends during a heat wave, and ask that they check on you.

Passage 5
Gardening may be one of the most relaxing hobbies you'll find, with the excitement of seeing something you have planted actually turn into a flower. But if you've been holding back because you don't have a yard, then you're missing out a lot. __1__
Container gardening is the most obvious way to plant when you don't have a ton of space. If you can get a container regardless of its size, you can have a garden. __2__ Even a small pot with a brightly colored flower or bushy green plants can give your entryway a pop of color.
__3__ Grow climbing plants on a fence or the posts over your doorway to decorate the side of your home. Plenty of plants are happy to grow up instead of out, so you can have some greenery without a traditional garden.
Have an apartment or townhouse Then consider outdoor window boxes that you access from inside. __4__ And they give you plenty of options to plant bright blooms or fresh herbs within reach—plus they give your home some added appeal at the same time.
There's probably still one room where you haven't thought of putting some plants: Your bathroom. Even if yours doesn't get much light, a wall mounted garden can still grow well. __5__ They will give your bathroom a more natural, earthy feel.

Passage 5
If you want to memorize something quickly and thoroughly, repetition won’t cut it. 1 Below are some universal steps to mastering the art of recalling so that you can start memorizing a ton of data in a short amount of time.
Make preparations.
Pay close attention to which environment you choose. For most people, this means choosing an area with few distractions.Figure out what is most beneficial to your learning so that you can get started.Next, start drinking some tea. 2
Record what you’re memorizing.
This is especially useful if you’re trying to memorize information from a lecture.Use a tape recorder to track all of the acquired facts being spoken and listen to it.If you’re trying to memorize a speech, record yourself reading the speech aloud and listen to yourself speaking.
 3
Before you start trying to recall everything from memory, write and re-write the information. Now that you have everything written down in one set of notes, separate them into sections. You can use color coding to differentiate between subjects. This will help you become more familiar with what you’re trying to memorize.
Apply repetition to accumulated memorization.
4 As you memorize each set of the text, accumulate it by adding the new information to what you’ve just learned. This will keep everything within your short-term memory from fading.Keep doing this until you have memorized that section and you are able to recall the entire thing.Do not move on to another section until you have memorized that one completely.
Teach it to someone (or yourself).
The most effective method for me when I was in school was to teach the information to someone else. 5 If what you’ve learned needs to be recited literally, then do this in front of someone as well in order to get a feel for what it will be like to recite the text to the intended audience.
Take a break.
Finally, let your mind breathe.Go for a short time without thinking about what you just learned and come back to it later on.You’ll find out what you really know,of course, and this will help you focus on the sections you might be weakest at.
A.Recall entire sections.
B.However,recalling something will.
C.Write everything down and section your notes.
D.You can lecture the knowledge to someone sitting right in front of you.
E.For each line of the text, repeat it a few times and try to recall it without looking.

G.Many scientific studies have confirmed green tea as a natural fuel for improving memory.
Passage 6
In your life, sometimes you may be asked to speak in front of a large group of people.Although it sounds a little scary, even those with stage fright can speak successfully to the group with adequate preparation.
Practice your speech before the big day. 1 If possible, practice the speech in front of a friend or a family member to get used to saying it to real people. If you feel you must have note cards, limit the amount to about three cards. This will force you to keep your speech concise and help you keep your eyes focused on your audience.
Remember why you’ve been invited to speak. If you’re battling fear over speaking to a large group of people, keep your mind on the fact that you were selected for this important role. The speech organizers must have seen something valuable in you or your expertise.
 2
Remember that fear of public speaking is very common. 3 Most of the people in the audience would be feeling the same fear and stress that you do in your position.Knowing this may make you feel better.
4 What you say should be tailored to why you’re there and who you’re speaking to in order to avoid sounding general. If speaking to a charity group, mention the good work certain specific individuals have done for the cause. If speaking at a business conference, briefly state why you want to help these people.
Keep eye contact with the crowd. 5 Pick one person in each section and look at him while you’re speaking. After each important point in your speech, switch your focus to another section. When you focus only on one person at a time, the size of the crowd isn’t as frightening.
A.A good memory is really helpful.
B.Show appreciation to your audience.
C.Mention your audience in your speech.
D.The more you have it memorized, the better.

2 Volunteering time to enrich your community is a great way to broaden your perceptions of the world. It will enrich your life, familiarize you with your community, and connect you to people and ideas that will positively impact your perspective for the rest of your life. And by surrounding yourself with people who are dedicated to making the world better, you can learn so much about how the world works.

Real policemen hardly recognize any resemblance between their lives and what they see on TV.
1 He has to know exactly what actions are crimes and what evidence can be used to prove them in court. He has to know nearly as much law as a professional lawyer, and what is more,he has to apply it on his feet,in the dark and rain, running down a street after someone he wants to talk to.
2 He will spend most of his working life typing millions of words on thousands of forms about hundreds of sad, unimportant people who are guilty of stupid crimes.
Most television crime drama is about finding the criminal:as soon as he’s arrested, the story is over. 3 Except in very serious cases like murders and terrorist attacks, little effort is spent on searching.
A third big difference between the drama detective and the real one is the unpleasant pressures:First,as members of a police force, they always have to behave absolutely in accordance with the law. 4 They can hardly ever do both. Most of the time some of them have to break the rules in small ways.
If the detective has to deceive the world, the world often deceives him. 5 And this separation the detective feels between himself and the rest of the world is deepened by the simple-mindedness—as he sees it—of citizens, social workers,doctors,law-makers,and judges, who, instead of eliminating crime, punish the criminals less severely in the hope that this will make them reform.
A.He can’t get any evidence from the witnesses.
B.In real life, finding criminals is seldom much of a problem.
C.Little of his time is spent in chatting.
D.Sometimes he can chat with others to relax himself.
E.Second,as expensive public servants, they have to get results.
F.The first difference is that a policeman’s real life revolves round criminal law.
G.Hardly anyone he meets tells him the truth.

Make it a habit. 2 For busy folks who might forget to walk, you’d better put it in your calendar.Laterally give yourself an appointment—schedule it as “me time”.Over time, you will make walking one of your habits.
3 To avoid predictability or boredom, get others to join you.Whether it’s a co-worker,a family member or a friend, having someone else by your side can be a big encouragement.
Make it work.Office types needn’t be confined (限制) to your desks. If circumstances allow, consider a walking meeting.Group discussions can take place during a walk.Or,when you can, walk around the building during phone calls. 4
Make use of technology. There’s no shortage of high tech fitness tools and apps designed to follow your every move. And it’s certainly fine to keep score. 5 Instead, use those that count the amount of time you’re walking ideally 10 minutes or more in a given stretch.
With these tips to help you,you are sure to benefit a lot from walking.
A.Make it a group outing.
B.Make it a family activity.
C.Repetition is the mother of routine.
D.Seeing these scores can get you inspired.
