One freezing morning last February, I walked through Ontario Place. Trees were frosted sculptures. Large chunks of ice floated in the lake. Then I saw a group of people in bathing suits bouncing up and down in the water. They held hands, shouting and yelling into the sky. They looked and sounded so free.
I’ve always found cold water thrilling. The shock of it is like pressing a switch. It seems to reset my body and soul.
And last winter, I definitely needed a reset. I woke up most mornings with a dull, grey feeling as I forced myself out of bed to start the day. I needed something to cheer myself up, but I didn’t know what, until that day.
The ice warriors (勇士) emerged from the lake, their skin steaming. Trembling, they were yet laughing and hugging each other. I called out: “You guys are awesome!” One woman waved back, “Come and join us! We’ re here every Monday morning.”
The night before my first dip (游泳), I was excited and nervous. Cold water was one thing, but this icy lake was a whole other level. Should I back out Eventually, I got up in the dark and drove to the meeting spot.
After some wild warm up, I charged into the lake along with others. We yelled into the sky. Teeth chattering heart rates slowing, fingers and toes going numb (麻木), we stayed there for somewhere between two and five minutes. Knowing it was my first time, people cheered me on. It felt amazing. I was stupid with cold, but I couldn’t remember the last time I’d felt so happy.
Now I go dipping almost every day, and I’ve come to long for that moment when the cold becomes a second skin and my internal voice goes silent. Apart from the thrill of those first heart-stopping dives, which, ironically, saved me from going under, what has drawn me is this community of generous, open-hearted souls.
We laughed together, often, but from the stories we’ve shared about ourselves, I know I’m not the only one who faces life’s challenges. Holding hands in the freezing lake, we looked out for each other last winter and will do so through this one.
It won’t fix everything in our lives—but for some reason, it helps. At the end of each session I return home feeling stronger, lighter, more able to carry on. As another winter sets in, I’m more than ready to embrace the cold again.

At the end of each session I return home feeling stronger, lighter, more able to carry on. As another winter sets in, I’m more than ready to embrace the cold again.

For thousands of years, people have known that the best way to understand a concept is to explain it to someone else. “While we teach, we learn,” said Roman philosopher Seneca. Now scientists are bringing this ancient wisdom up-to-date. They’re documenting why teaching is such a fruitful way to learn, and designing innovative ways for young people to engage in instruction.
Researchers have found that students who sign up to tutor others work harder to understand the material, recall it more accurately and apply it more effectively. Student teachers score higher on tests than pupils who’re learning only for their own sake. But how can children, still learning themselves, teach others One answer: They can tutor younger kids. Some studies have found that first-born children are more intelligent than their later-born siblings (兄弟姐妹). This suggests their higher IQs result from the time they spend teaching their siblings. Now educators are experimenting with ways to apply this model to academic subjects. They engage college undergraduates to teach computer science to high school students, who in
turn instruct middle school students on the topic.
But the most cutting-edge(最前沿) tool under development is the “teachable agent” — a computerized character who learns, tries, makes mistakes and asks questions just like a real-world puter scientists have created an animated (动画的) figure called Betty’s Brain, who has been “taught” about environmental science by hundreds of middle school students. Student teachers are motivated to help Betty master certain materials. While preparing to teach, they organize their knowledge and improve their own understanding. And as they explain the information to it, they identify problems in their own thinking.
Feedback from the teachable agents further enhances the tutors’ learning. The agents’ questions compel(强迫) student tutors to think and explain the materials in different ways, and watching the agent solve problems allows them to see their knowledge put into action.
Above all, it’s the emotions one experiences in teaching that facilitate learning. Student tutors feel upset when their teachable agents fail, but happy when these virtual pupils succeed as they derive(获得) pride and satisfaction from someone else’s accomplishment.

Let’s take a moment to consider the words of one of America’s most remarkable philosophers, Henry David Thoreau.
Thoreau spent the years 1845-1847 living on the outskirts of society in a small cabin in the woods by the side of Waldon Pond. He called this period of his life an experiment of intentional living and wrote this famous paragraph:
I went to the woods because I wished to live intentionally, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not
learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow(精华)of life.
There is great wisdom in Thoreau’s purpose here, and I think it’s very useful to ask ourselves this question:What would our lives be like if we sucked all the marrow out of life
If Thoreau’s quote sounds familiar, it may be from watching the film Dead Poets Society, a movie with deep wisdom. The film is about young men at a boarding school as they prepare to do good in the world because they have the privilege to bring about change. Their English teacher, played by Robin Williams, tries to convince them that they should live life well now instead of believing that they will find happiness after they reach certain goals. Part of his argument is conveyed by quoting this famous passage from Thoreau.
Sucking the marrow out of life sounds simple enough, but as a matter of fact, it may be the most difficult thing that we can ever do. But it actually is as simple as it. Sounds—though “simple” is not quite the same thing as “easy”. I can think of one barrier that often keeps us from living our best lives. What keeps us from getting the most out of life is our desire for approval and fame. In the process of always looking for fame and glory, there is the danger that we will stop living. In order to seek approval from others, we fail to find a sense of approval within our own spirit.
When we become aware that we are missing so much out of life, we can decide that we want to make changes. Our best move is to start small. If we are having a meal, whether a great festival feast or a modest supper, it is always within our power to take it slowly and really feel, taste, and enjoy the food before us. Few of us can easily do like Henry David Thoreau and get away from it all in the wilderness. But we can make small changes every single day.
51.What wisdom is conveyed in Thoreau’s words
A.Stay away from city life. B.Live one’s life to the fullest.

C.To further illustrate Thoreau’s wisdom. D.To state the film was adapted from Thoreau’s works.
53.What’s the author’s attitude towards people’s seeking for approval
A.Critical. B.Supportive. C.Sympathetic. D.Unconcerned.

四、阅读表达
For most of her life, Suanne Laqueur’s passion for storytelling was shown on the dance floor.
Although Laqueur began writing at a young age, dancing always took center stage. She majored in dance and theater at Alfred University and taught at her mother’s dance studio in Croton-on-Hudson, New York, for years. But when her mother was ready to retire and an opportunity opened for Laqueur to take over the studio, she realized she had no interest in taking on the business side of her art: “Owning a studio is a lot of work — financially, logistically. I love the teaching, the choreographing (编舞), the staging, but I didn’t want to own it.”
Yet Laqueur’s disinterest in running the studio changed when she became a self-published author. In the fall of 2013, she decided to pursue self-publishing as a way of sharing her first completed novel with friends and family. During the process, she realized that following her true passion-telling stories through writing — made the business of the art worthwhile, and owning that business meant she could direct her writing career however she chose.
Starting with her second self-published novel, she began investing more time in marketing and building her audience.
Her investment paid off. Since 2014, Laqueur, now 49, has self-published six novels, which collectively have hundreds of ratings and reviews on Goodreads. Gradually, readers pay more attention to her works. In particular, her 2016 novel An Exaltation of Larks stole the show and won the grand prize at the 25th Annual Writer’s Digest Self-Published Book Awards, topping more than 2, 300 entries.
“You have to write the most truthful story to you, and I think self-publishing allows that freedom,” she says, “If you work with traditional publishing, it’s more about what’s marketable. There are trade-offs, which everyone will tell you, but by self-publishing I have control of the book, I have control of the story, and I’m cool with that.”
56.Why didn’t Laqueur take over her mother’s studio (no more than 10 words)
57.What made Laqueur change her attitude to business (no more than 5 words)
58.What does the underlined part “stole the show” mean in paragraph 4 (no more than 3 words)
59.How does Laqueur enjoy the way of self-publishing (no more than 10 words)
60.Which do you think is the most important factor when pursuing your career Please explain. (no more than 20 words)
【答案】56.She didn’t have interest in running the studio.
Or: She disliked hated the business side of art.
Or: Owning a studio is much work-financially, logistically.
57.Self-publishing her novel(s).
Or: She became a self-published author.
Or: She self-published her novel(s).
58.Attracted/Caught/Captured/Drew people’s attention.
59.She has the freedom to write the most truthful story.
Or: She has control of the book and the story.
Or: She doesn’t have to consider the market and trade-offs.
60.Passion/Interest. If I have a great passion for my job, I will work harder and be more likely to succeed.
【导语】这是一篇记叙文。文章主要叙述了舞蹈演员Suanne Laqueur成功自助出版小说的经历。
56.考查细节理解。根据第二段中“But when her mother was ready to retire and an opportunity opened for Laqueur to take over the studio, she realized she had no interest in taking on the business side of her art: ‘Owning a studio is a lot of work — financially, logistically. I love the teaching, the choreographing (编舞), the staging, but I didn’t want to own it.’(但当她
She didn’t have interest in running the studio./She disliked hated the business side of art./Owning a studio is much work-financially, logistically.
57.考查细节理解。根据第三段中“Yet Laqueur’s disinterest in running the studio changed when she became a self-published author.(然而,当Laqueur成为一名自助出版的作家后,她对经营工作室的兴趣发生了变化)”可知,Laqueur成为一名自助出版的作家后对经营工作室的兴趣发生了变化,故答案为Self-publishing her novel(s)./ She became a self-published author./She self-published her novel(s).
58.考查词句猜测。划线短语上文“Gradually, readers pay more attention to her works.(渐渐地,读者越来越关注她的作品)”提到,读者越来越关注她的作品,结合划线短语所在句中“In particular(尤其是)”以及“won the grand prize at the 25th Annual Writer’s Digest Self-Published Book Awards, topping more than 2, 300 entries(在第25届《作家文摘》年度自出版图书奖上,从2300多部作品中脱颖而出,获得了大奖)”可知,此处是举例说明她的作品备受关注,stole the show意为“引起人们的关注”,故答案为Attracted/Caught/Captured/Drew people’s attention.
59.考查细节理解。根据最后一段“‘You have to write the most truthful story to you, and I think self-publishing allows that freedom,’ she says, ‘If you work with traditional publishing, it’s more about what’s marketable. There are trade-offs, which everyone will tell you, but by self-publishing I have control of the book, I have control of the story, and I’m cool with that.’(‘你必须为自己写最真实的故事,我认为自助出版允许这种自由,’她说,‘如果你与传统出版合作,更多的是关于什么是有市场的。每个人都会告诉你,这是有利有弊的,但通过自助出版,我可以控制这本书,我可以控制这个故事,我对此很满意。’)”可知,Laqueur喜欢自助出版是因为她有自由写出最真实的故事,可以控制书和故事,不需要考虑市场和权衡,故答案为She has the freedom to write the most truthful story./She has control of the book and the story./She doesn’t have to consider the market and trade-offs.
60.考查开放题型。根据第一段“For most of her life, Suanne Laqueur’s passion for storytelling was shown on the dance floor.(在她生命的大部分时间里,Suanne Laqueur对讲故事的热情都表现在舞池里)”和第三段中“During the process, she realized that following her true passion — telling stories through writing — made the business of the art worthwhile, and owning that business meant she could direct her writing career however she chose.(在这个过程中,她意识到,追随自己真正的热情——通过写作讲故事——让艺术事业变得有价值,拥有这项事业意味着她可以随心所欲地指导自己的写作生涯)”可知,Suanne Laqueur凭借对写作的热情成功地自助出版小说,作品备受关注并获得很多奖项,因此我认为在职业生涯中热情或者兴趣最重要,因为如果我对我的工作有很大的热情,我就会更努力地工作,更有可能成功。故答案为Passion/Interest. If I have a great passion for my job, I will work harder and be more likely to succeed.

Trembling, they were yet laughing and hugging
each other.

They engage college undergraduates to teach computer science to high school students, who in turn instruct middle school students on the topic.

I went to the woods because I wished to live intentionally, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.
Their English teacher, played by Robin Williams, tries to convince them that they should live life well
now instead of believing that they will find happiness after they reach certain goals.

But when her mother was ready to retire and an opportunity opened for Laqueur to take over the studio, she realized she had no interest in taking
on the business side of her art: “Owning a studio is a lot of work — financially, logistically.
