“There is no magic in treating people’s troubles. I just listen, observe (观察) and learn,” said Fu Yingchun, 34, a psychological counselor (心理咨询师) of nine years.
Fu, based in Shanghai, accepts appointments (预约) online. A session (场) of counseling, where visitors share their stories, usually lasts an hour.
“Many troubles visitors face may come from dealing with relationships and sudden events,” Fu said, adding that the most common symptoms (症状) are anxiety, feeling scared and depression (抑郁).
The purpose of the sessions is to observe the guests, discovering their hidden emotions (情绪), needs and wishes that they aren’t ready to share. Hearing people’s day-to-day troubles, counselors may have their down days, too. “This is why every counselor must report to their own senior counselor. The sessions are like releases (宣泄) for bad emotions,” Fu said.
However, , Fu doesn’t regard her job as being a “garbage (垃圾)” bin for people’s complains (抱怨). “Most of the time, I think my work has a strong social value because, in a way, counselors also save lives,” Fu said. (2023·浙江衢州·三模)“Mom I want a cat,” or “Mom I want a dog,” or “Mom I want a…” are common words that parents may hear from their children more than once. However, there are many arguments(争论)for
and against children owning pets.
The first argument that supports pet ownership by children is that they help to keep children company. When children come home from school, pets are always there to greet them. They love children and always want to play. As a result, children will be less likely to experience loneliness. They will also help to keep children active as they will need to be walked and played with every day.
Secondly, owning a pet encourages children to learn new responsibilities(责任). Pets need to be looked after and be taken care of every day. Children will learn different skills that they can use later in life. For example, washing and feeding pets are basic skills to learn. Learning these responsibilities will make sure that children will be able to look after themselves, and possibly their children one day.
On the other hand, some pets can be dangerous. Some dogs, for example, are likely to bite, and children may become scared of animals as a result of this happening to them. Cats also look very soft and lovely, but they do have very sharp claws. If they are treated in the wrong way, cats can use their claws to hurt others.
In addition, pets need a great deal of maintenance(维护). Many pets need to be often exercised and bathed. As a result of this, children may pay less attention to their studies because they are too busy worrying about their pets and its well being.
A further argument against pet ownership is that pets are costly; buying food and maintaining their care is not cheap. Finally, the cost of owning one falls on parents, and as a result, children don’t fully understand the responsibility of having one.

You may think you are not very good at some school subjects, or that it is impossible for you to become a writer. These kinds of thoughts stop you from achieving your dream, the book says.
In fact, everyone can make his dream come true. The first thing you must do is to remember what your dream is.
Don’t let it leave your heart. Keep telling yourself what you want. Do this step by step and your dream will come true faster because a big dream is, in fact, made up of many small dreams. You must also never give up your dream.
There will be difficulties on the road to your dreams. But the biggest difficulty comes from yourself. You need to decide what is the most important. Studying instead of watching TV will bring you better exam results, while saving five yuan instead of buying an ice cream means you can buy a new book. As you get closer to your dream, it may change a little. This is good as you have the chance to learn more skills and find new interests.

Hillary Yip, CEO of MinorMynas, was born in Hong Kong in February 2005, two years later than the first iPhone. She tries to find ways to create a global(全球性的) community and safe place for young people to connect and learn languages.
At age 10, Yip had the idea for a language-learning app, MinorMynas. At that time she was trying her best to learn Putonghua. The platform, launched in May, 2018, is a children-only community that encourages kids to video-chat with others around the world, making language learning more fun and interactive.
The following is a conversation between a reporter and Yip.
Reporter: Why do you come up with such an idea
Yip: If you look at the traditional methods of language learning, kids find that it’s not fun anymore. You’ve got exams, dictations—we hate it! MinorMynas is all about letting children learn a language through chatting and making friends with other people.
Reporter: Who helps a lot to the success of MinorMynas
Yip: My mum. She’s taught me to be curious all my life and to challenge. She’s been a rebel(叛逆者) her whole life! I really look up to her in this case, but I don’t think she expects the rebelliousness from me.
Reporter: You’ve spoken a lot about the importance of curiosity for innovation(创新).
Yip: We are all born to ask questions, but the way we’re brought up can kill it. The way we’re taught in schools kills so much of our curiosity. I guess that’s why creativity is so valued now, because we need people who can challenge and create things that wouldn’t be there.
Reporter: Is that the benefit of being so young, having a fresh perspective
Yip: Yeah, that’s the great benefit of being a kid. Adults have been through so many experiences that can change the way you look at the world. For us kids, we just take things as they are.

To solve this problem, a 13-year-old middle school student Zhang from Shenzhen invented a smart robot and he got the first prize in the 20th Guangdong Provincial Children’s Invention Awards (奖项). His parents are so proud of him.
This efficient robot can collect homework in a short time without making any mistakes. It uses radio frequency identification (RFID,射频识别) technology—a reader and a special tag (标签) that can share information without touching each other. This way, it can help find and know what it is looking for. Each student’s notebook has a special RFID tag with their name and the subject. Students only need to place their notebooks on the robot, and the machine “sees” the notebook, reads its tag and takes it out of the name list. Teachers can check who hasn’t turned in homework by connecting their phones with the robot through Wi-Fi.
Many teachers speak highly of the robot after using it and they think Zhang will create more useful AI tools to make life easier. His parents will continue to support him. (2024·山东济宁·一模)Social media (社交媒体) is certainly an interesting place to learn others’ opinions. You can read everything from strange ideas to true facts. But when you are spending time online and reading so many opinions, it’s quite possible that you’ll sometimes see someone write something that you strongly disagree with.
In fact, you might feel so strongly that you feel like you should reply to this person at once. You might do some research, find some facts of your own and reply to what they’re written. You finish writing it out, click (点击) “Post” and win the argument!
Except that it’s not really much of a victory. Most people don’t like it when other people disagree with their ideas, especially online strangers. It’s unlikely that they will change their opinion just because you argued with them. In fact, it’s possible that you made them feel more confident that they’re correct.
And the thing is, when you get in these kinds of fights online, it slowly influences you. You might not know it at first, but the argument that you take part in can actually have a bad effect on your mood (心情). If you argue often, you start to enjoy arguing and then end up doing it even more. It’s a dangerous cycle.
I guess the best thing to do is to tell yourself that most arguments aren’t worth it. There are much better and more interesting things to do, whether online or in real life.

98.How might arguing online influence you
A.You will face a lot of dangers. B.You will become more confident,
C.You might feel bad and argue more. D.You will get better at arguing.
99.What’s the writer’s advice
A.Argue until you find the truth.
B.Find something better to do instead of arguing.
C.Try to communicate in real life instead of online.
D.Don’t spend time discussing problems with strangers.

In the 1960s, a musical group composed a popular song titled Monday, Monday: “Every other day of the week is fine, yeah. But whenever Monday comes, you can find me crying all of the time.” When talking about days of the week, Monday gets little expectation. I surveyed friends, and the results were very clear. When asked which day of the week they like the least, 90 percent of my friends chose Monday. Not one person thought of Monday as his or her favorite day. But in fact, I think that Monday is actually the best day of the week.
First of all, consider all the good things that happen on Mondays. If you are a sports fan, you may get to watch Monday Night Football in the fall. Furthermore, quite a few public holidays, are celebrated on Mondays. That means that several times a year, a Monday provides a three-day weekend. And according to websites, Monday is the best day to do shopping because there aren’t as many people shopping on the first day of the workweek. Experts say that you can also get the best online deals on Mondays. This is especially true for electronics, such as computers, TVs, and video games.
To me, however, there’s something even more important about Mondays. Each Monday stands for a new
beginning. For example, last week I got behind on my homework and had to spend the weekend catching up. But as soon as Monday arrived, I had a clean slate. Another week I forgot to do some of my chores, so I had to give up going to a movie with my friends on the weekend.
I also love Mondays because we usually start new lessons at school at the beginning of the week. While last week’s topics may have been boring, Monday can bring a new book to read, more experiments to do, or math problems to work out. Besides, I always become full of energy on Mondays after getting enough sleep at weekends.
I realize that I am probably not going to make everyone believe that Monday is the best day of the week, but hopefully I can encourage a few people to change. The next time a Monday comes, think about all the good things that could happen and look forward to the day instead of fearing it.
There’s no way to avoid Mondays, so join me in making the best of them. Who knows You might even start liking the first day of the workweek.

(2024·湖北·一模)Around the world, people are more and more worried about the environment. Many people now prefer products and companies (公司) that care about the earth and cause less pollution. This need for
green products has led large companies to change their business.
Before, customers used cheap plastic (塑料) bags, and then threw them away. But now most supermarkets and stores usually provide reusable shopping bags for them. This causes less waste. They also offer more local products, because less energy is needed for carrying them from one place to another.
To help lower air pollution, big car factories are looking for other ways to control the amount of oil. Cars that use much less oil are very popular. Many companies are also developing fully electric cars. They produce no air pollution at all. Both kinds of cars have another advantage: They are cheaper to run and people don’t need to worry about oil prices.
The airline companies face an even greater green challenge. Airplanes use much more oil than cars. So many airlines are now developing planes that can run on some other kinds of oil. They create less pollution and cost less. The companies are also developing a new kind of planes, and some of them use only solar panels (太阳能板) to fly!

The study examined the home Internet use, well-being (幸福) and behavior of 296,000 15-year-olds in 41 countries. More than one in four spent more than four hours per day online outside of school. The study found lower levels of well-being among students who spent six hours per day online. They were twice as likely as teenagers spending one and two hours per day online to report that they felt lonely at school. These “extreme Internet users” were also especially at the risk of “behaving in problematic ways at school, such as arriving late or skipping class.”
The report said, “Lower levels of engagement (亲密关系) with school may be connected to less sense of belonging at school. It is also possible that skipping class and arriving late for school are the consequence of lack of sleep among extreme Internet users.” It adds, “Parents, school and health professionals can work together to watch and plan children's use of new media.”
The study also found that countries that invest (投资) heavily in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in schools have seen no “considerable” difference in 15-year-old’s achievement in reading, math or science tests. The study results suggest “limited” use of computers at school “may be better” than not using them at all. However, students who use computers “very frequently” at school “do a lot worse in most learning outcomes”. The report says, “In the end, technology can strengthen great teaching, but great technology cannot replace poor teaching.”
