There are various ways we can help people in need. Big charity organizations commonly deliver food to hungry people, build homes for the homeless and volunteer at local charity centres.
1 , there is a new way to help poor people living in distance, and that is by giving money to them directly.
Since 2012, the charity organization Give—Directly has been studying the 2 of direct money support to poor Kenyans (肯尼亚人). The charity gives them a one—year budget, spread over several months. They can spend the money on whatever they need, and they never have to pay it back! When Give—Directly tracked how the money was being used, they were glad to find that the Kenyans were using the money 3 .
Many of the families spent the money on new metal roofs to take the place of their old grass roofs. While grass roots need 4 several times a year, metal roofs last longer and save money. Some bought land and cows from farming or started small businesses such as buying a used motorcycle to transport people around like a taxi. This helped them to have more money for food, clothing and health care and give their children an education.
The studies on giving money directly to poor Kenyans are going on. Some people are 5 that some of the families will waste the money or simply become dependent on these donations. Although its hard to tell if it is a good idea to give them direct money support, we can all agree that it is a 6 way of helping others.

▲Mobile Libraries
Thanks to mobile libraries, some people live far away from cities and those who have an illness can still borrow books. The libraries are special. Unlike most libraries, which store (存储) books in buildings, mobile libraries usually keep their books in a mini-bus. The back of the mini-bus has shelves for the books, and it is big enough for borrowers to step inside and look around. A driver takes the mini-bus to a certain place at a certain time, so people know when to expect (期待) it and they can give their books back to mobile libraries and borrow some more.
Do you believe a school library can be as small as a bus A school in London didn’t have space for a library inside the building.

There are many libraries in Britain. Let’s learn something about them.
▲Public Libraries
Most towns in Britain have a public library. A library usually has a large selection of books and other resources (资源), which library members can use and borrow without paying.
The first Britain’s public library opened in Manchester in 1852. Its first librarian was a man called Edward Edwards. Edwards attended the library’s opening ceremony (仪式) and two famous writers called Charles Dickens and William Thackeray were there, too.
▲Services(服务) of Library
Modern public libraries have something for everyone. Most of them have audio books, CDs, newspapers and DVDs as well as books to borrow. To join a library, go to your local library and fill in a form. You’ll receive a library card which is needed when using library services.
However, everybody agreed that it was still important to have a school library. So, the head of the school, Graham Blake, decided to park an old bus on the school playground and change it into a library. Students helped to paint the bus, and after eight months, the new library was ready.

Passage 2
In China, if you want to know which social app young people use a lot now, you had better not miss “short videos”. Some users use apps like Tik Tok (抖音) and Kuaishou because they think it is fun to share short videos about their lives, while others have different purposes as well.
A 12-year-old user named Elsa has up to 2.7 million supporters on Tik Tok. The girl has shared videos about her dancing studies since last July. One of the videos won her about one million fans. “I feel really happy to go on sharing happiness with other people by short videos,”said Elsa. As some videos are about the latest news, a group of users depend on them to get information. To some other users, they have a different purpose. “Because I can’t spend many hours watching a long video and I am not a patient person. I don’t like waiting for a programme to end,” said Wang Zhihao.
However, some young Chinese feel bored with some short videos. “Killing time is the main reason for me to watch the videos. But many are almost the same, so I think it is a waste of time,” said Wen Nan, another college student. Recently, something else has happened. Some videos are telling people to buy things. Some users buy them after watching, but they should think twice. If they don’t think carefully, they may regret (后悔) soon. Some short videos even sell fake (假) products, but these sellers won’t let you give them back, or deal with your trouble.

In shops, restaurants and supermarkets around Beijing, you may notice a special place about 10 square meters in size. It is a service corner for outdoor workers to rest or to get some necessary things like water, medicine and battery chargers(充电器).
These spaces are free for all outdoor workers to use. Without them, they have to take a break by the roadside.
One restaurant near Xiyuan Subway Station provided space for the service corner. “Working in the restaurant, I can see deliverymen (外卖员) all the time. I know how hard it is for them to make money,” said Li Hui, the restaurant’s owner. “They sometimes can’t get hot water in winter. Service corners almost solve such problems. That’s what I want to do for them. I hope the service corner can warm outdoor workers’ hearts.”
Now there are about 27, 000 service corners in Beijing, and it plans to add another 3, 900.
