Once upon a time, there was a happy paper doll that had no face. His whole body was perfectly cut out and painted, except for his face. However, he had a pencil with which he could draw whatever face he wanted to have. How lucky! He asked everyone he met, “What’s a perfect face like ”
“One with a big beak(鸟嘴),” answered the birds.
“No. Not one with a beak,” said the trees. “The perfect face is full of leaves.”
“Forget the beak and the leaves,” shouted the flowers. “If you want a perfect face, you should fill it with colours.”
And so everyone he met—animals, plants, the sea, mountains…—told him to draw his face with their features and colours. The doll took all of their advice. Then he had a face. However, it turned out that nobody liked it. And now he couldn’t erase(擦除)it!
“I only wanted a face that everyone would like,” the doll cried. “And now look—what a disaster(灾难)!”
A small cloud heard his cries and came, “Hello, doll! I think I can help you. As I’m a cloud and do not have a shape, I can make any face you like. What do you think about me changing faces until there is one that you like I’m sure we can fix you a little bit.”
The doll again felt hopeful. The cloud made all kinds of faces for him. But none of them was perfect enough.
“Never mind,” said the doll. “You’ve been a great friend.” He gave the cloud a big hug, and the cloud smiled from ear to ear, happy to have helped. Just then, the doll jumped excitedly, “That’s it! That’s the face I want! It’s a perfect face!”
“Which one ” asked the cloud. “But I haven’t done anything.”
“Yes, yes you have! It’s that face you make when I hug you!”
The cloud finally realized that he was talking about her big smile. And together, they took the pencil and drew the paper doll a big smile, ten times better than a beak, leaves, colours, waves and lots of other things. Many scientists believe our love of sugar may actually be an addiction. When we eat or drink sugary foods, the sugar enters our blood and affects the parts of our brain that make us feel good. Then the good feeling goes away, leaving us wanting more. All tasty foods do this, but sugar has a particularly strong effect. In this way, it is in fact an addictive (使人上瘾的) drug, one that doctors suggest we all cut down on. “It seems like every time I study an illness and trace a path to the first cause, I find my way back to sugar,” says scientist Richard Johnson. One-third of adults worldwide have high blood pressure, and up to 347 million have diabetes (糖尿病). Why “Sugar, we believe, is one of the causes, if not the major cause,” says Johnson.
Our bodies are designed to survive on very little sugar. Early humans often had very little food, so our bodies learned to be very efficient in storing sugar as fat. In this way, we had energy stored for when there was no food. But today, most people have more than enough. So the very thing that once saved us may now be killing us.
★ It’s obvious that we need to eat less sugar. The trouble is, in today’s world, it’s extremely difficult to avoid. From breakfast cereals to after-dinner desserts, our foods are increasingly filled with it. Some producers even use sugar to replace taste in foods that are advertised as low in fat. So while the foods appear to be healthier, large amounts of sugar are often added.
But some people are fighting back against sugar and trying to create a healthier environment. Many schools are replacing sugary desserts with healthier choice, like fruit. Other schools are trying to encourage exercise by building facilities like walking tracks so students and others in the community can exercise. The battle has not yet been lost.

(2024·湖北武汉·二模)Life’s greatest lesson for Granny Hu can be found in a cup of the green tea she has grown and spent most of her life: the bitter comes before the sweet, and she has known both. She was good at growing things from at least age 14. She loved the soil and worked in her gardens until she was 113. “My grandma is quick-witted and hard-working. She was better at planting crops than others, so in the years when there were shortages of food she was able to support the family,” his grandson said. Granny Hu is the oldest person in her village and she experienced all the hardships during the life. “I have lost my husband, my children and my brothers, but I couldn’t lose myself in sadness. Luckily, I can always find love in my family and that is how I was encouraged to carry on.”
Another centenarian (百岁老人) , Granny Yang, gave birth to eight children. “In the darkest days, we didn’t have enough food to support the big family, so I went into the mountains to look for food to feed my children instead of giving them away, as many people did,” she said, “no one in my family was allowed to shout or scream at each other. My children grew up in peace.” What’s more, she helped her children get a better education. “Education is the best soil to support children’s growth and will improve themselves for a lifetime.”
The poor life inspires a strong wish for change. That’s the most important lesson that Grandpa Dong said he has learned in life. Like most older people in China, he expected to spend his life farming. However, because of the wars, he was driven out of his farm. He spent nearly 10 years to make his way home. The condition in his home was more terrible than that before he left. To improve the poor life, he left his farm again to look a new way to make a living. He did business and he finally made a comfortable living. This 108-year-old man gives his advice to others: “Don’t be afraid of change.”

One of my favorite inventions in recent years is face unlocking. Without needing to lift my fingers and type in the numbers, I can get straight into my phone with just a look. Now there is a new technology designed to replace the password called the “passkey”!
Passkeys turn your phone into something a bit like a wallet, which you can use to store membership cards to
all of your apps and services. When you need to log in to a website, you’ll just have to tap a button on your phone and your passkey wallet will let you in without any worry.
And how does it keep this wallet safe By using the same “biometric (生物统计)” check your phone uses — a face scan or a fingerprint that cannot easily be forged.
Passkeys won’t just save us from having to remember passwords but, perhaps logging in with a passkey will actually be much safer than typing a password. This is because it uses a technology called “public key” cryptography (密码) which is one of the building blocks of the Internet — and is how computers have securely communicated with other computers for so many years. To put it simply, it works a bit like a key, instead of a password.
With a password, the website has to keep a database (数据库) of everyone’s passwords to check against when you log in. But with a passkey, when you create your account on a website, it will effectively create a new lock and key. The website will keep the lock, ★ .
I think it’s a really clever idea, and that passkeys are going to make our digital lives even safer. So, next time you’re complaining that you can’t remember your password, don’t worry too much. It won’t always be like this!

C.or it will remember the key D.and only your phone will have the key
45.The passage is written to ________.

C.report the invention of face unlocking D.describe digital lives
(2024·湖北黄石·二模)Cities are often thought of as concrete jungles (混凝土丛林) that are polluted and overcrowded with people. They are, however, places where there is a great economic (经济的) chance, and that is the reason why people still pour into cities in the hope of having a better future for themselves and their families.
As more and more people live in cities, planners are looking for ways to change cities into better living spaces. The way this is done is by improving infrastructure (基础设施) while also creating more public spaces that are both beautiful and green. This can be hard to achieve, especially in cities where planning was done in no order.
Some cities have been created with the idea of a green city as the goal. One such city, Masdar City in the United Arab Emirates, is to become a model for other cities to follow. It is being declared as a truly green city that depends on renewable sources (可再生资源) such as solar energy to provide all of its energy needs. In addition, it will be a zero waste city where everything can be reused. Whether it will truly reach its goals remains to be seen, but it will also act as an experiment for environmentally-friendly ideas to be tested.
Cities that want to become greener and more habitable (宜居的) have to look at all ways of city life, and Masdar City is at least trying to do this. (2024·湖北武汉·二模)A group of scientists set out to estimate (估计) the number of ants on Earth. According to their research, there are about 2. 5 million ants for every human on the planet. Then the scientists held 489 studies of ant populations.
The studies covered all kinds of habitats including cities, deserts and forests. The researchers find that most ants live in tropical (热带的) areas and that they are more commonly found in forests and dry areas than in human-made habitats. In addition, the scientists find that the population of ants is more than the number of all the world’s wild birds and animals together.
The researchers say this number is a low estimate. This is because they did not have much information on how many ants live underground. Besides, there were not many trusted studies about how many ants live in certain parts of the world, like Africa.
Ants play very important roles in the environment. They help to spread seeds, help water reach plant roots, and are a kind of food for many living things. Patrick, who did this new estimate, said, “I am sure the whole nature would simply break down without ants.”
For checking their populations, it is useful to estimate how many ants there are. (2024·湖北武汉·二模) Leoh Ming Pei, one of the world’s best-known architects (建筑师), left over 50 designs during his long career. These stand as his gifts to the world.
The glass pyramid of the Louvre Museum in Paris, France might be Pei’s most famous work. Back in the 1980s, the Louvre Museum was having trouble with traffic. To solve the problem, Pei planned to dig an underground hall and place a glass pyramid on top. Many people didn’t like the idea. They said it was too modern for the classical museum. However, the idea turned out to be a success. It is not only the museum’s main entrance, but also a huge skylight (天窗).
In 2006, Pei was invited to build a museum in his hometown Suzhou. He tried to include local and historical ideas in his design. He built small halls with traditional white walls and dark roofs, just like the classical Chinese gardens. Moreover, the lines and windows in the roof bring something modern to the museum.
★ The famous Lion Grove Garden (狮子林) in Suzhou used to be owned by Pei’s family. Pei spent some summers there as a child. Maybe that was when Pei developed his interest in architecture. Pei spent most of his adult years in the US, first studying at universities and then working in different places. Even though he was trained in the US, the beauty of Chinese Classics was well displayed in many of his designs. “I’ve never left China because home is a place your heart always belongs to,” Pei once said.

(2024·吉林长春·一模)As a teenager, school was difficult for me. I had a kind of attention disorder, which means I couldn’t direct my attention to what I was doing. So when everyone else in the class was centering their attention on tasks, I could not.
In my first reading class, Mrs. Smith asked us to read a story and then write on it, all finished in 45 minutes. I immediately put up my hand and said, “Mrs. Smith, you see, the doctor said I have attention problems. I might not be able to finish the task.”
She looked down at me through her glasses, saying, “You are not different from your classmates, young man.” With her encouragement, I tried. But I didn’t finish the reading when the bell rang. I had to take it home.
In the quietness of my bedroom, the story suddenly all became clear to me. It was about a blind person, Louis Braille. He Lived in a time when the blind couldn’t get much education. But Louis didn’t give up. Instead, he invented a reading system of raised dots(点), which opened up a whole new world of knowledge to the blind.
Wasn’t I the “blind” in my class, being made to learn like the “sighted” students With thoughts running through my head, I found myself deeply attracted in reading and writing. I completed the task in less than 40 minutes. I realized that I was not different from others. I just needed a quieter place. If Louis could find his way out

(2024·山东济南·一模)Have you ever noticed something around you that you’ve never seen before They all came about because someone invented them. Most inventions begin with an idea. Someone sees a need or a problem. Then he or she thinks of an idea to meet that needs or solve the problem.
But not all inventions happen on purpose. They may be something by working on an idea and invent
something else by chance. Or an inventor might make a mistake that turns out to be a good idea.
Between AD 600 and 900, scientists in ancient China were working in a lab when they invented fireworks by accident. They were working on an invention that would help people live forever. They mixed materials together like salt, charcoal (木炭), and sulphur (硫黄). They put the mixture into pieces of bamboo. Then they threw them into a fire. This is how fireworks were invented.
In 1905, a boy named Frank Epperson left a cup of soda (苏打水) outside all night. It had a wooden stick in it. The soda froze in the cold evening. In the morning, Frank tasted the frozen soda. He shared the frozen soda with his friends. All of them spoke highly of his new invention. It tasted really good! He called his invention “Episicle”.
In 1968, scientist Spencer Silver was researching adhesives (黏合剂) when he discovered one that stuck to things, but could then be easily taken away. For years he tried to find a use for his invention. At the same time, another scientist named Art Fry was singing. He used small pieces of paper to mark the songs in his book. He needed bookmarks that would stay in place. Silver and Fry discussed their ideas and created the Post-it note.

(2020·湖北恩施·中考真题)A number of years ago, a man went to visit a circus(马 戏 团 )in New York. He was able to walk around looking at the lions, monkeys, bears and other circus animals. As he was passing the elephants, he suddenly stopped. He found that these huge elephants were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg. No chains, no cages. It was clear that the elephants could, at any time, break away from their ropes but for some reason, they did not.
He saw a trainer nearby and asked why these animals just stood there and didn't try to get away. "Well,” the trainer said, "when they are very young and much smaller, we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it's enough to hold them. As they grow up, they still believe they can not break away. They believe the rope can hold them, so they never try to break free.”
“How could it be " said the man. These animals could at any time break free from ropes. But because they were always stuck right where they were, they believed they couldn't.

Some of the world’s most important scientists think the idea of people living on Mars will come true one day. Stephen Hawking believed humans must move into space to live. “Once we spread out into space and build independent colonies (殖民地), our future should be safe,” he said. Robert Zubrin, a rocket scientist, agrees and thinks sending people to Mars will allow us to learn a lot—for example, about the ability of humans to live in a very different environment.
★ Terraforming means changing the environment on a planet so that it is similar to Earth’s. One of the main goals of terraforming Mars is to warm it up because the average temperature there is about -60 °C. One idea for warming Mars is to build factories there that produce greenhouse gases. This could take many centuries. However, it should lead to rainfall and the growth of plants, resulting in more air that people can breathe.
Another big concern for scientists is whether humans can move to Mars and still stay healthy in mind and body. As a test, six people lived in a Mars-like environment in Hawaii for a year before “returning to Earth” recently. It was a 1, 200-square-foot room that was on the side of a volcano (火山) and used the sun for energy. Christiane Heinicke, one of the people who lived there, said that one of the biggest problems was feeling bored. Another important finding was that the people living together should all be able to get along and work together.
One particular organization based in Europe is planning to send the first humans to Mars before 2030. However, many experts think the project’s cost of $6 billion is too low for it to be successful. The American space agency NASA believes that sending people to Mars would cost about $100 billion, although this estimate (估价) is based on bringing them back to Earth, too. Anyway, it seems that humans living on Mars may well happen a lot sooner than most people believe.
96.Paragraph 1 mainly focuses on ________.
A.how we can move to another planet B.why we work on moving to Mars
C.when we will move to Mars D.where the Mars is
97.Which of the following can be put in ★
A.However, scientists need to terraform Mars for people to live.
B.And people are trying to send the people to Mars.
C.But scientists can’t do anything about this.
D.However, it is not easy to move to Mars.
98.According to paragraph 3, scientists care about _______.
A.the cost of moving to Mars B.the energy on Mars
C.the physical quality of people D.the food on Mars
99.The underlined word “them” refers to ________.

C.$6 billion is enough to send people to Mars.
D.Moving to Mars would be good for mankind.
(2024·湖北咸宁·二模)The human brain is amazing. People think and solve problems with their brains. What if a city had a “smart brain” There might be something like that in Beijing! Beijing’s Haidian district has been working on it since 2018. Recently, they added a big data (大数据) model called Jiuzhou to make the city brain even better. It uses artificial intelligence (人工智能AI) to quickly collect data and highlight what people care about. It can give suggestions for fixing problems within minutes, making city management smarter.
To explain how it works, the official asked it to name the top three streets with the best noise pollution solutions. The big model quickly found the streets that did well in fixing noise pollution in early August 2023. It also suggested ways to deal with the problem.
The district plans to build 572 smart and safe communities using technologies like smart access (准入) control and facial recognition (识别). These technologies help keep people safe by quickly knowing what problems might happen and improving how the police deal with situations.
The district also plans to watch out for cars that make black smoke. This system has machines on important roads to catch black smoke, an online system that checks in real time, and sensors (感应器) that study the bad things in the air. This can make sure that the important roads are always watched carefully. It works together with the police and transportation teams to stop cars that make black smoke and keep the air clean.

①That future is almost here. “I think it’s going to happen. Maybe in ten years...and hopefully much, much faster,” said Sebastian Thrun in 2021. At that time, his young company Kitty Hawk Corporation was working on developing a flying car known as eVTOL, or Electronic Vertical Take-Off and Landing vehicle (车辆).
②Flying to work or school sounds unbelievable. “Not only is it fun to fly, but there would never be traffic again, because the sky is very, very large,” says Thrun. He also thinks eVTOLs could be greener than common cars. “We go much faster, we go in a straight line, we fly on less energy,” he says.
③So far, though, flying cars haven’t taken off as a product. Will their day come There are still many problems to solve. Their high price means most people won’t be able to afford one. So, some companies are developing them as air taxis that people could pay to ride. The main problem with flying cars is safety. Accidents in the air are dangerous to both the passengers and anyone on the ground below. To make eVTOLs safer, many developers are aiming to make themself-flying-no human pilot required.
④Another problem is space. Most aircraft (飞机) need long runways to take off and land. Lifting straight up and down like a helicopter (直升飞机) solves this problem. But eVTOLs still need special spaces, called vertiports (垂直起降机场), for take-off and landing. Finding places to put these could be tricky, especially in crowded cities. But maybe some could go on top of buildings.

(2024·湖北荆州·一模)Sometimes, families can be hard. They argue a lot. Things get said. People get upset. Sometimes they stop talking. Our family has had lots of ups and downs. I’d say arguments often happen in our family, too.
I have an older brother and an older sister. I’m the baby boy in the family. We grew up in quite a small house and often didn’t have a lot of money. My mum and dad argued, pretty much all the time, just about anything. My brother and sister argued. And I used to argue too.
But as I got older, I always chose to be the mediator. I would try to look at both sides of the argument and bring them together to make peace. “Dad, you shouldn’t have said that to Mum, but Mum, try to see it this way.” “Come on guys, we all love each other. It’s just been a bad day.” I’d say it often worked.
I learned much growing up in our family: understanding, being patient and the knowledge that sometimes things just don’t go your way. We all make mistakes. We all say things that we wish we hadn’t. The key is to try and understand. Of course, sometimes, arguments do need to happen. If something is wrong, it needs to be solved and sometimes, we get angry about it. But as long as we can reflect and look at things with an attitude (态度) of care and responsibility, we can weather the storm and help each other out.
