Passage 1
Technology is here to stay. __1__. However, they are often unsure how to help children use technology responsibly and keep a balance between online and offline time. Here are some tips.
Have a device contract
Having a device usage contract allows parents and children to work through what responsible technology usage looks like in your family and ensure that everyone is aware. __2__. Kids are more likely to make sense of the reasons you have for restriction.
__3__
Although this tip seems like common sense, it is often difficult due to the demand of work and the expectation of being constantly connected. By ensuring you build offline time into your own day and communicate that with your children, they will see the value and benefits. Whether you are reading a book or just taking a walk, letting your children be aware of your offline actions will encourage them to do the same!
Encourage non tech activities
One great way to keep kids off their screens is to ensure that they have other activities to fill their time. __4__. These activities are also great ways to help children to develop their social skills and confidence.
Tech free family time
Once a week, pencil in a “tech free family time” in your schedule. It can be a meal or trip. To help increase the success of outings, try designing special activities, i.e., going to the beach to build a sand castle that looks the same as a photo you have found online. __5__.
A.Model good technology use
B.Communicate with children
C.A little extra planning goes a long way
D.The contract is helpful to the settlement of conflicts
E.Parents are seeing more technology in their homes and jobs
F.Also, drafting the contract together promotes understanding
G.This can come in a variety of forms: soccer, fencing and more
Passage 2
Giving generously and receiving gratefully make it easier to live happily with others. __1__
Let me start with the idea of giving generously. __2__ For example, my husband and I have family members who only contact us when they need money. We usually accept their requests, but we rarely receive a “thank you”. Most people would say that my husband and I are being used, and I suppose we are. But when we give, we shouldn't be giving for the purpose of getting gratitude or praise. Rather, we should be giving because it is a good thing.
The good news is that when we lead our life being nice to others, our life runs more smoothly. __3__ But if you practise being generous, most of your relationships will improve.
At the same time, we should remember to receive gratefully. I truly believe that you can't say “thank you” enough when you receive.
__4__ Parents can feel unappreciated by their children, and teachers can feel unappreciated by their students. Do you think it unnecessary to thank them when receiving just because a task is part of someone's job description That's wrong !
__5__ It is good for us to say “thank you” because we regularly need to remind ourselves how lucky we are. And hearing those two words can make us feel great for days.
If you are looking for a way to improve your life, I can give you one: give generously and receive gratefully.
A.So often we get lazy about expressing gratitude.
B.Thus, saying “thank you” can bring us good luck.
C.If you are generous, some people will use you.
D.In return, we are to help others by giving them our time or money.
E.I think people are unwilling to be generous to others for fear of being used.
F.Yet, why do we have such difficulty achieving these things in our relationships
G.Words of appreciation make others feel good about themselves like nothing else.
Passage 3
To achieve something, you need the right mindset. You need a mindset that knows you can succeed in what you are aiming for. __1__ Below are some pointers.
You complain about life.
__2__ Do you find yourself complaining about your situation, or what other people have said or done If you do, it means that you do not accept the reality of your situation or past. That causes stress. Rather than complain, if you have the power, you should change your situation. If you cannot change your situation, then you need to accept it. If something cannot be changed, then you must change your attitude towards it.
You want a pain free life.
Don't fear pain. Pain is a part of living. You cannot travel new paths and attain success without the pain of hard work, taking risks and making mistakes. Finally, pain makes you stronger. __3__ Rather be pleased that you have the opportunity to learn new lessons.
You blame others for your problems.
If you feel anger and resentment against others, blaming them for your problems, then you need to change your mindset. __4__ They only make you bitter. Instead of being angry, choose to learn and grow from negative experiences, and then let them go. From today, you can choose your own path and it starts with choosing your thoughts.
An effective mindset is one that makes the best use of your time, energy and skills to make positive changes. __5__
A.Don't complain or worry about pain.
B.Watch what you say to yourself and others.
C.Your mindset will determine your future path.
D.Do you know how to have the right mindset
E.You will see it doesn't serve to benefit your progress.
F.These negative thoughts will not change other people.
G.How do you know if you need to change your mindset
Passage 4
Imagine climbing a mountain and getting halfway up and saying to yourself, “You know what, I'm going to climb back down and finish this later.”
__1__ We have projects that sit waiting to be completed. Some people start college but never graduate. We have books that we never finish reading. __2__ Many people are great at beginning things but can't seem to finish strong.
Not finishing what we started has been a repeated problem for us. We have to face it. __3__ Whenever we delay, or put to the side, the things that will help us accomplish our goals, we stop developing our potential.
Not finishing not only causes us to stop making progress but also we find it harder whenever we do decide to start again. Consider this: every time I begin a new exercise programme my muscles are sore (疼痛的) for a few days. After a few weeks of routine, the muscles get accustomed to the programme and grow stronger. Thus, no more sore muscles. Well, when I take some time off I fear starting again. __4__
Strong finishers are able to focus on getting the best result from anything that they start. So how do we know that we are a strong finisher?Along with the huge feeling of accomplishment, other people will begin to notice the change. __5__ They will have no choice but to recognize our strong finishing ability. We will be rewarded with more trust from them.
A.The list goes on and on.
B.We should have the confidence.
C.Why don't we have the interest any more
D.Sounds silly, but that is what we do all of the time.
E.I know that my muscles are going to be sore again.
F.They will see we are able to climb and conquer the mountain.
G.Not being a strong finisher can limit our ability to conquer our goals.
Passage 5
How to respond when someone judges you
Dealing with judgement from other people can be tough, especially when it's coming from a friend, family member, or colleague. Judgemental people are unavoidable, but you can easily deal with their criticism using positivity and compassion.
Rid yourself of the judgement. Remember that a judgemental person's words are a reflection of their own beliefs—and not yours. Critical people criticize themselves more than anyone else. __1__.
Be sympathetic. Practise sympathy to understand the source of this person's judgement. It could be that they were judged by parents, family, or friends, in which case this person's critical attitude would be something they learned (and not necessarily intentional). While that doesn't excuse their behaviour, having sympathy can inform your response. Say things like “__2__,” or “I see where you're coming from, but...” when you respond to someone's judgement.
Ask for clarification. __3__. Ask this person to explain what they said, and find out their motivation for saying it. You could ask then, “What are you trying to say?If you have constructive criticism, I'm open to hearing it.” That way, you're giving the other person a gentle reminder to phrase their words constructively.
__4__. Be polite but firm when you call out judgemental people. If somebody crosses a line and makes you feel criticized, tell them how you feel. If someone is giving you criticism you didn't ask for, you could say, “__5__, and I have a plan that works for me.”
A.Stop talking like this
B.Set boundaries in the conversation
C.I understand why you feel that way
D.I feel like I need to deal with this in my way
E.I know you want to talk but this is a sensitive subject for me
F.Judgemental people may not know they're being rude or unreasonable
G.So the judgement they pass isn't actually about you, though it can feel personal
Passage 6
Green exercise is a term used to describe any type of physical exercise that takes place in a natural environment, rather than in a health club or gym. __1__ Instead, it relies on the use of natural means of taking part in activities that improve strength and endurance with as little reliance on equipment as possible.
__2__ For example, some consider a truly natural exercise experience requires that the individual wear clothing only made from natural fibres. Others consider barefoot (赤脚的) running or walking would be greener and thus be more desirable than running or walking with shoes.
A slightly different approach to green exercise puts more stress on fresh air, sunshine, and involvement with the natural world, rather than the equipment or clothing. __3__ In like manner, climbing a mountain using standard equipment and protective clothing would also be considered green exercise.
Many consider green exercise helps to reconnect human beings with the natural world. The interaction with nature helps to lower people's blood pressure, refresh their mind, and actually improve their self esteem (自尊).__4__
Not everyone believes that green exercise is more beneficial than working out in a health club or gym. __5__ Meanwhile, the use of fitness devices may result in more challenging workouts, which help strengthen the heart and lungs in ways that more simplistic exercise in a natural setting would be difficult to manage.
A.Spirits are also believed to be positively affected.
B.A green gym uses as little equipment as possible.
C.All forms of green exercise are good for you.
D.Opinions on what truly green exercise means differ.
E.Besides, it usually doesn't use fitness equipment that is normally found in a gym.
F.So riding a bicycle in a forest can be called a type of green exercise.
G.Some point out that many health clubs are constructed to make full use of natural light.
1.答案与解析:E 本段首句“Technology is here to stay.” 下文中又提到家长们不确定如何帮孩子,E选项“Parents are seeing more technology in their homes and jobs”和下文一致,并且下文中的“they”指代E选项中的parents。故选E。
2.答案与解析:F 本段小标题是“Have a device contract”,上文“Having a device usage contract allows...” F选项“Also,drafting the contract together promotes understanding”和上文是递进关系,与下句“Kids are more likely to make sense of the reasons you have for restriction.”
3.答案与解析:A 根据下文中的“By ensuring you build offline time into your own day... they will see the value and benefits... letting your children be aware of your offline actions will encourage them to do the same!” A选项“Model good technology use”能概括本段,适合作为小标题。故选A项。
4.答案与解析:G 本段小标题是“Encourage non tech activities”,上文“... is to ensure that they have other activities to fill their time.”提到让孩子远离屏幕的活动,G选项“This can come in a variety of forms: soccer, fencing and more”是一些具体的活动的例子,和前文呼应,后文“These activities are also great ways...”
5.答案与解析:C 本段第一句话“... pencil in a‘tech free family time’in your schedule.”以及第三句话“To help increase the success of outings, try designing special activities...” C选项“A little extra planning goes a long way”符合语境。
1.答案与解析:F 上文“Giving generously and receiving gratefully make it easier to live happily with others.” F选项“Yet,why do we have such difficulty achieving these things in our relationships?”
2.答案与解析:E 根据下文“For example,my husband and I have family members who only contact us when they need money. We usually accept their requests, but we rarely receive a‘thank you’. Most people would say that my husband and I are being used, and I suppose we are.” E选项“I think people are unwilling to be generous to others for fear of being used.” C选项“If you are generous, some people will use you.” 与前文“Let me start with the idea of giving generously.”
3.答案与解析:C 下文“But if you practise being generous, most of your relationships will improve.” C选项“If you are generous, some people will use you.”
4.答案与解析:A 下文举例“Parents can feel unappreciated by their children, and teachers can feel unappreciated by their students.” A选项“So often we get lazy about expressing gratitude.” 故选A项。
5.答案与解析:G 根据下文“It is good for us to say ‘thank you’ because we regularly need to remind ourselves how lucky we are. And hearing those two words can make us feel great for days.” G选项“Words of appreciation make others feel good about themselves like nothing else.”(没有什么像感激之词一样能让人自我感觉良好。)
1.答案与解析:G 根据下文“Below are some pointers.” 各段小标题正是对G项“How do you know if you need to change your mindset?” 故选G项。
2.答案与解析:B 下文“Do you find yourself complaining about your situation,or what other people have said or done?” B项“Watch what you say to yourself and others.”(注意你对自己和别人说的话。)
“Rather be pleased that you have the opportunity to learn new lessons.”与A项“Don't complain or worry about pain.” 故选A项。
4.答案与解析:F 下文“They only make you bitter.” F项“These negative thoughts will not change other people.”
5.答案与解析:C 根据上文“An effective mindset is one that makes the best use of your time, energy and skills to make positive changes.”可知末段是对全文的小结,C项“Your mindset will determine your future path.”
1.答案与解析:D 根据上文“Imagine climbing a mountain and getting halfway up and saying to yourself, ‘You know what, I'm going to climb back down and finish this later.’” D“Sounds silly, but that is what we do all of the time.”
2.答案与解析:A 根据上文“We have projects that sit waiting to be completed. Some people start college but never graduate. We have books that we never finish reading.” A“The list goes on and on.”(这样的例子不胜枚举。)
3.答案与解析:G 根据上文“Not finishing what we started has been a repeated problem for us. We have to face it.” G“Not being a strong finisher can limit our ability to conquer our goals.”符合语义,引出下文“Whenever we delay, or put to the side, the things that will help us accomplish our goals, we stop developing our potential.”
4.答案与解析:E 根据上文“Consider this: every time I begin a new exercise programme my muscles are sore (疼痛的) for a few days. After a few weeks of routine, the muscles get accustomed to the programme and grow stronger. Thus, no more sore muscles. Well, when I take some time off I fear starting again.” E“I know that my muscles are going to be sore again.”
5.答案与解析:F 根据上文“Along with the huge feeling of accomplishment, other people will begin to notice the change.” F“They will see we are able to climb and conquer the mountain.”
1.答案与解析:G 根据上文“Rid yourself of the judgement. Remember that a judgemental person's words are a reflection of their own beliefs—and not yours. Critical people criticize themselves more than anyone else.”
2.答案与解析:C 根据上文“While that doesn't excuse their behaviour, having sympathy can inform your response.”以及后文“I see where you're coming from, but...”
3.答案与解析:F 根据后文“Ask this person to explain what they said, and find out their motivation for saying it. You could ask then,‘What are you trying to say?If you have constructive criticism, I'm open to hearing it.’That way, you're giving the other person a gentle reminder to phrase their words constructively.”
4.答案与解析:B 根据后文“Be polite but firm when you call out judgemental people. If somebody crosses a line and makes you feel criticized, tell them how you feel.”
5.答案与解析:D 根据上文“If someone is giving you criticism you didn't ask for,you could say...”以及后文“...and I have a plan that works for me.”
1.答案与解析:E 根据上文“Green exercise is a term used to describe any type of physical exercise that takes place in a natural environment, rather than in a health club or gym.”
2.答案与解析:D 根据后文“For example, some consider a truly natural exercise experience requires... Others consider barefoot (赤脚的) running or walking...”
3.答案与解析:F 后文“In like manner, climbing a mountain using standard equipment and protective clothing would also be considered green exercise.”表明什么样的锻炼会被视为绿色运动,由in like manner可知,空格处也应该是有类似特点的运动,而F项中“can be called a type of green exercise”与后文中的“also be considered green exercise”结构一致,都是在介绍绿色运动的类型。故选F。
4.答案与解析:A 前文“The interaction with nature helps to lower people's blood pressure, refresh their mind, and actually improve their self esteem(自尊).” 故选A。
5.答案与解析:G 根据上文“Not everyone believes that green exercise is more beneficial than working out in a health club or gym.” 因此,空格处也是在讲述健身俱乐部或者健身房的优点,G项中的“many health clubs”与上文的“in a health club or gym”相呼应。故选G。
