四、 阅读与回答问题
The use of the word “disabled” always makes me angry. In my daily life, I experience so many difficulties that are not seen by any other person. However, once when a friend got a broken leg and had to walk on crutches like me for a few weeks, he began to look at me with more understanding.

In Nigeria, school education is a big challenge for the disabled. The school buildings and all other facilities(设施) aren’t designed for anyone who uses a wheelchair or crutches. So in order to attend school, I usually have to do more than others. My parents didn’t send me to a special school, so I attended normal schools like many other children. But when I got to the college, things changed. I had to live on campus(住校) since it was very far from town to the school and the travel cost much. Using the facilities was a difficult task, and many days I had to give up taking my bath in the toilets.

I didn’t lose heart. Today, I work as a computer programmer and I own and drive a car. In fact, my mother did a lot in this success story. She always believed that I could become somebody useful in life. She always encouraged me and had high hopes for me. She’s not alive now. Without her encouragement I might achieve nothing today. All mothers with disabled children should follow the example of my mother.

Disability is often thought of as something physical. It can be seen and touched. But the fact is that disability is often in the mind. So the final war has to be fought by yourself. People will not easily change their minds. You must make them see that they are wrong. Society must know that we are not disabled, we are just challenged and will take up the challenge.

1. How did the writer feel when he heard the word “disabled”?
 He felt angry.
2. When did a friend begin to look at the writer with more understanding?
When he got a broken leg and had to walk on crutches like the writer for a few weeks.
3. Why did the writer have to live on campus when he was in the college?
Because the school was far and the travel cost much.
4. Who helped the writer a lot in his success?
 His mother.
5. What is “disability” in your mind?(请自拟一句话作答)

① Malaria(疟疾) has been a big problem for humans since ancient times. Usually people get malaria when infected(感染的) mosquitoes bite them. Countless people have died from the disease. Luckily, Chinese scientist Tu Youyou found an effective drug called qinghaosu.

② In 1969, Tu became the director of a national project to develop a drug for malaria. Her team took a special way. They studied books about traditional Chinese medicine. After reading more than 2,000 old remedies(药方), Tu and her team collected over 600 plants and listed almost 380 possible remedies for malaria.

③ One remedy, which is 1,600 years old, uses sweet wormwood(蒿) as a treatment. Tu found it worked and tried to extract(提取) the qinghaosu from it to make a drug. The extraction failed at first, so Tu returned to the classical books again and finally found a way. She used a low temperature method to extract the qinghaosu and finally succeeded in 1972.

④ After her team showed that qinghaosu could treat malaria in mice and monkeys, Tu and two of her coworkers decided to test the drug on themselves before trying it on human patients. It turned out that qinghaosu was safe, and all patients in the test got better. Gradually qinghaosu became the first-line treatment for malaria recommended by WHO, saving millions of lives around the world.
