3. Discuss with your partner and share your passage.
【Pre-writing】
Activity1. Read the passage and summarize the structure of describing outer space.
The universe is very large. There are many galaxies in it, such as the Galaxy. There are billions of stars in the Galaxy, and our sun is only one of them. The eart and seven other plants go around the sun. There has been life on the earth for hundreds of millions of years.
Scientists have done a lot of research about space. Astronauts have been to the moon. Scientists have sent spaceships to Mars. However, they have not found life on any other plants yet.
Is there life out there in space We don’t know the answer, but some scientists believe that they will find the answer some day.
Activity 2. Make an interview for an astronaut.
On January 25, China successfully launched another man-made satellite(卫星). Do you know that? What a wonderful thing !Please choose an astronaut you are interested in for an interview. You can interview them about their experiences in space travel. You can also dream about the future development of space industry with your favorite astronaut. Q1:What does the universe look like
Q2: What have humans done to explore(探索) the universe
Q3: What should we do to protect it
Q4: …
Now, write a passage to describe the outer space you have known.

Passage 1:Space
词数:263 摘自:网络
As space science develops, man has learned more and more about space. Space is not only amazing but also dangerous. While working in space, spacemen are facing danger as well as success.
Scientists have found out that the radiation[footnoteRef:1] is the greatest danger to spacemen in space. When spacemen are working in space, they are in danger of the radiation from the sun and other stars, which is bad for their health. The harm of the radiation won't be found until their children even grandchildren are born. Some special medicine may work a little, but no really effective medicine has been found so far. [1: radiation n. dangerous energy that something sends out]
Space rubbish is also thought to be a great danger to spacemen. It's reported that there were 9,000 man-made things flying in space. About 30% of these are satellites, 10% are spaceships, and the rest are space rubbish. An explosion (爆炸) in space in 1999 made a cloud of 300,000 fragments, each at least 4mm in size. A small piece of these even knocked a spaceship window and caused some damage .
Scientists are watching and reporting any possible danger all the time. They are working to deal with space rubbish. Although space is really dangerous, it interests many people on the earth. In the near future, it may become possible for people to spend a few days in a space hotel. We may even choose to leave the earth
and live in space in a few years. So we should do something to help improve the space environment.
Comprehending
Read the passage quickly and answer the question.
What is the greatest danger to spacemen in space
Your opinion.
What do you think of space rubbish And What should we do to improve the space environment
Passage 2:Moving to Mars
词数:300 摘自:译林版九年级下册Unit 4
Some people believe that humans could live on the planet Mars by the year 2100. Our own planet, the Earth, is becoming more and more crowded and polluted because of the rapid[footnoteRef:2] increase in population. It is hoped that people could start all over again and build a better world on Mars. Here is what life there could be like. [2: rapid adj. fast; happening in a short period of time]
At present, our spacecraft are too slow to carry large numbers of passengers to Mars–it would take months. With the development of technology, by the year 2100, the journey might only take about 20 minutes in spacecraft that travel at the speed of light! However, the spacecraft would travel so fast that the journey to Mars might be quite uncomfortable. Many people would feel ill.
Humans cannot survive without water, oxygen or food. So far, nobody knows whether there would be enough water or oxygen on Mars for people there. Moreover, scientists are not sure whether plants could grow on Mars. Food would most probably be in the form of pills and would not be so tasty.
Gravity[footnoteRef:3] could be another problem. The gravity on Mars is only about three-eighths of that on the Earth. People would have to wear boots that are specially designed to prevent themselves from floating[footnoteRef:4] off into space. [3: gravity n. a force that pulls everything towards earth.] [4: float v. to move slowly on water or in the air]
Compared with life on the Earth, life on Mars would be better in some ways. People would have more space. They might live in houses with huge comfortable rooms. Also, robots would do most of their work so that they could have more time to relax.
There would probably be no schools on Mars. Every student would have a computer at home connected to an interplanetary(星球间) network. They would study at online schools with “e-teachers”.
Life on Mars would be interesting as well as challenging.

Passage 3:Space talk: An astronaut’s day
词数:283 摘自:北师大版9年级全册Unit4
Every morning you get up, wash your face, brush your teeth, eat breakfast and get ready for your day. These daily actions are so common that you don’t think about them much. But what if you were in space
There is no gravity there, so weights are not as heavy as they are on Earth. When you drop something, it doesn’t fall to the floor. It floats slowly away in the air. This means that astronauts can’t just put down a tool. They need to tie it down. And how do astronauts drink In space, water just breaks into small drops and hangs in the air.
Well, astronauts eat and drink differently in space. They have special plates, so that their food doesn’t float away. They use special bags for drinks so that the drink stays inside.
Sleep is also different in space. Astronauts tie themselves to the wall so that they don’t float around when they are sleeping. Since they have to work hard, they need to get plenty of rest. The sun rises and sets so often that it can be confusing[footnoteRef:5]. The astronauts have alarms and sometimes music to wake them up. [5: confusing adj. difficult to understand; not clear
]
Exercise is important for astronauts as well. Since there is no gravity and astronauts float instead of walking or running, their muscles become weak very quickly. They have to exercise on special machines every day so that this doesn’t happen. No one wants to become ill in space and exercise helps them stay healthy.
However, it is not all hard work in space. When they are not doing science experiments, writing reports or exercising, there is a little time for fun. They watch movies, read the news and call family members and friends. The astronauts on the International Space Station can even connect to the Internet.
Comprehending
