My interest in body language began with a professor of mine at university. He mentioned “Pinocchio” to me one cold morning after saying that I always rubbed my nose when giving excuses for being late to his courses. Actually, when someone tells a lie, the person’s blood rushes to the nose and the extra blood makes it itchy (发痒的). This little example of non-verbal communication inspired me to become a body language expert. Now, I earn my living by training people in non-verbal communication. Knowing when someone is lying and knowing how to persuade people are two of the most important skills you’ll ever learn.
I have spent a lot of time studying the ways the human body gives and they provide more reliable information than the words we speak. The words say one thing but the body may say something completely different. We know that crossed arms can be seen as either defensive or aggressive (攻击性的), but what about facial expressions, postures and gestures All of these say a lot and can only be understood if you know how to make sense of the signs.
Business companies always need my services and I try to improve their confidence by teaching them about body language. I give advice about handshakes, which should always be firm and steady, and I teach the importance of personal space. They may seem like small matters, but these codes of behaviour can be the key to making or breaking a business deal.
My working life gives me a great deal of satisfaction. I feel that I’m providing a public service, but it is a service that has had its downside. Whenever I meet someone new and I tell them what I do for a living, they immediately put their guard up and they’re no longer relaxed. They quite literally freeze in the attempt to hide all the signals that they think I’m reading. It makes life difficult at times, but I consider it a small price to pay for a job I enjoy so much.
4. What is the author’s purpose of mentioning his professor
A. To describe his professor’s success.
B. To explain why he chose his career.
C. To show his professor’s study of the “Pinocchio” effect.
D. To introduce what impressed him most during his career.
5. What is the main idea of the second paragraph
A. The body language can tell you the real story behind words.
B. It takes a plenty of time to study the body language.
C. Crossed arms can be regarded as an impolite way.
D. Facial expressions play an important part in the body language.
6. Why do people react in an unnatural way when knowing the author’s profession
A. They dislike his services.
B. They think he is too proud.
C. They consider him unreliable.
D. They believe he is studying them.
7. What can we learn about the author from the text
A. He thinks little of minor gestures.
B. He travels the world giving advice.
C. He is happy with his work.
D. He is good at pretending.
C
Satellites are an important part of our ordinary lives. For example, the information for weather forecasts is sent by satellite. Some satellites have cameras which take photographs of Earth to show how clouds are moving. Satellites are also used to connect our phone calls.
Computer connections of the World Wide Web and the Internet also use satellites. Many of our TV programs come to us by satellite. Airplane pilots sometimes also use a satellite to help them find their exact location.
We use satellites to send television pictures from one part of the world to another. They are usually 35,880 kilometers above the equator(赤道). Sometimes we can see a satellite in the sky and it seems to stay in the same place. This is because it is moving around the world at 11,000 kilometers an hour — exactly the same speed that the Earth rotates(转动). A satellite must move around the Earth with its antennae (天线) facing the Earth. Sometimes, it moves away from its orbit (轨道), so there are some rockets on it which are used to put the satellite back in the right position. This usually happens about every five or six days.
Space is not empty! Every week, more and more satellites are sent into space to orbit Earth. A satellite usually works for about 10-12 years. Satellites which are broken are sometimes repaired by astronauts or sometimes brought back to Earth to be repaired. Often, very old or broken satellites are left in space to orbit Earth for a very long time. This is very serious because some satellites use nuclear power and they can crash into each other.
8. Which of the following is NOT done by satellite according to the passage
A. Sending information for weather forecasts.
B. Taking photographs of the Earth.
C. Sending TV pictures to the Earth.
D. Providing food for airplane pilots.
9. What’s the speed that the Earth rotates at
A. 35,880 kilometers per hour.
B. 335,880 kilometers per hour.
C. 11,000 kilometers per hour.
D. 110,000 kilometers per hour.
10. What does the underlined word “This” in the third paragraph refer to
A. A satellite moves around the Earth forever.
B. A rocket always keeps a satellite’s company.
C. A satellite seems to stay in the same place in the sky.
D. The satellite puts the rockets in the right position.
11. Which of the following statements about satellites is TRUE
A. A satellite usually works for about 10-12 years.
B. Every time a satellite gets broken, it is thrown away.
C. A broken satellite is never left in space.
D. Broken satellites always crash into each other.
D
Due to climate change, Arctic(北极) ice is breaking up earlier in the spring, and its area is decreasing. This is creating problems for polar bears that make their homes off northern Alaska and in Hudson Bay.
Polar bears off Alaska normally hunt and raise their young on ice sheets that float on the ocean. But as the ice has melted, the polar bears have been forced to spend more time on land. There, they have begun to go to beaches frequently, feeding on the remains of whales caught by native hunters. For polar bears, this food is less nutritious than seals that they normally catch on ice sheets. The decreasing ice has also forced more polar bears into the ocean. In the past, they only had to swim short distances between ice sheets. But as the ice is smaller, polar bears have been forced to swim longer and longer distances in the open ocean. This puts a severe danger during rough weather, and an increasing number of drowned polar bears have been observed.
In Hudson Bay, the ice breaks up three weeks earlier in the spring now than it did 20 years ago. Polar bears on Hudson Bay fast(禁食) during the summer, waiting for ice to form in the fall to hunt. Every year, the summer gets longer, and the bears get skinnier. Over the past 25 years, the average weight of the female bears has dropped 68 kg. This loss affects their ability to reproduce, and already the number of births has dropped by 15 percent. Unless the bears can learn to survive climate change, these giants of the ice may one day disappear.
12. What is happening to the Arctic ice these years
A. It’s freezing. B. It’s hardening.
C. It’s melting. D. It’s expanding.
13. According to the second paragraph, which statement about polar bears is TRUE
A. Their young are dying.
B. Their diet is changing.
C. Their health is improving.
D. Their families are growing.
14. What does the writer imply about female polar bears in Hudson Bay
A. They are having fewer young now.
B. They suffer from various sicknesses.
C. They don’t need stronger protection.
D. They can’t find enough good males.
15. In which publication would you most likely find this passage
A. Medical News. B. Society Today.
C. Wildlife Journal. D. Design Magazine.
第二节(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
16 I say this a lot because it’s important: you need to walk more. There are a few main reasons why I’m so fond of walking, also known as moving frequently at a slow pace.
17
Walking might not be as effective as other forms of exercise, but frequent walking will help anyone with two functioning legs stuck in the couch lose some body fat.
It’s good for your brain.
Walking does much more than working the area underneath your neck. The farther an old person can walk in six minutes, the better he or she performs on memory and logic tests. Folks who perform poorly on the walking test tend to have reduced certain sections related to creation of their brains.
It reduces stress.
18 Go for a walk, preferably in a natural setting. For me, it’s the beach of the Malibu hills. For others, it might be the woods or even a park.
It prevents falls in the elderly.
Walking on uneven, natural ground like hiking trails, improves balance and reduces falls in the elderly. 19 The earlier you start habitually walking, the better your ability to navigate the land without falling will be.
It gives you a chance to think.
When we walk, we think. And because walking is a low-difficulty effort, we can direct our executive functioning to more internal matters. We work through problems, come up with ideas, replay conversations, scheme and discover solutions. 20
A. It properly reduces body fat.
B. It lowers blood pressure, especially after meals.
C. Don’t wait until you’re already at risk of falling.
D. What do I do when I need to get away from a particularly stressful day
E. Try to keep the walk as close to the meal as possible to lose weight .
F. Even though some of you may be tired of me saying this, it needs saying.
G. Or maybe we just think about that funny dog we saw on the way to work the other day.

On Saturday night, my best friend called and invited me to her birthday the next day. I was very excited to go there, but I needed permission from my parents.
I went to my dad's room and softly said, “Dad, tomorrow is my best friend's birthday and I really want to go.” Papa said, “OK. I don't mind, but ask your mom.”
I asked my mom and she said, “OK. You can go, but you have to be back before 10.”
The next morning my mom was surprised to see me. No alarm. No Mom’s warning. I just woke up by myself. Finally, the whole day had passed and it was party time. My dad dropped me off at my friend's place and told me that he would pick me up at 10. I said “OK” and ran away.
I enjoyed myself a lot at the party. We had dinner and played so many games. It was 10 finally. I remembered my mom telling me that I should be back before 10. I came out and started searching for my dad, but I could not find him. I was so worried and scared. I waited and waited, and then I started walking. I thought at least I could walk home as my house was 20 minutes away from my friend's. As I was walking, I was crying as I had never walked alone on the road that late at night.
Suddenly I heard someone shouting something. I was scared and started walking fast. I thought some criminal was there. As I was walking fast, I heard someone walking fast behind me. I started running and crying, and then I saw some parked cars. I hid behind the cars. I saw a shadow searching for me. I hoped someone would help me. After a while, I could not see the shadow, so I came out slowly and ran towards my home.

第二节 (满分25分)
One possible version:
Finally, I reached home, and I started crying when I saw my mom.She started asking so many questions, but I was unable to answer any of them. After some time, I relaxed and told her everything, and she got scared too. At that moment, my dad came in and asked what happened. As soon as I started telling him my story, he said, “After I saw you, I shouted at you, but you ran away from me and suddenly you disappeared. I was searching for you everywhere. I arrived late because my car broke down.”
My mom burst out laughing after hearing what my dad said.I was shocked to hear that and felt relieved. My dad hugged me and said, “You should have waited.” My mom said, “You should be calm and strong in every situation.” But they said they were really happy that I’d come home safe and sound. The next day I went to school and told my friends everything that had happened to me the night before. They were surprised at how bravely I’d faced everything. That was the most adventurous night I’d had. Unforgettable
