(2024·江苏常州·一模)Over the next few afternoons. Mrs Phelps, the librarian, could hardly take her eyes off the small girl sitting for hour after hour in the big armchair at the far end of the room with the book Great Expectations on her lap (大腿). It was necessary to rest it on her lap because it was too heavy for her to hold up, which meant she had to sit leaning forward (前领) in order to read. The only movement from the reader was the lifting of the hand every now and then to turn over a page.
Within a week, Matilda had finished Great Expectations which had four hundred and eleven pages. “I loved it,” she said to Mrs Phelps. “Has Mr Dickens written any others ”
“A great number.” said the astounded (感到震惊的) Mrs Phelps. “Shall I choose you another ”
Over the next six months, Matilda read fourteen books, including Nicholas Nickle by Charles Dickens and The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway.
“Mr Hemingway says a lot of things I don’t understand,” Matilda said to Mrs Phelps. “But I loved it all the same. The way he tells it makes me feel I am right there watching it all happen.”
“A fine writer will always make you feel that,” Mrs Phelps said. “And don’t worry about the bits you can’t understand. Sit back and allow the words to wash around you, like music.”
“I will.”
“Did you know,” Mrs Phelps said, “that public libraries like this allow you to borrow books and take them home ”
“I didn’t know that,” Matilda said. “Could I do it ”
“Of course,” Mrs Phelps said.
From then on, Matilda would visit the library only once a week in order to take out new books and return the old ones. (2024·江苏宿迁·二模)It all happened because Andrew liked his drink so much. Jane, his bride (新娘), was several years older than him, and was in a great hurry to get married. Andrew agreed to marry her because of the baby, but he didn’t really want to get married. Poor Jane was afraid of losing Andrew. She was very anxious to get him to church (教堂) as soon as possible.
It was a fine November morning. Andrew left Longpuddle to walk to his bride’s village. He walked all over the road, first one side, then the other Andrew’s brother and sister went with him to be his witnesses (证婚人). The night before, Andrew was at his neighbour’s house for a party to welcome a new baby. That night, Andrew had no sleep, and he had a lot of strong drink.
Jane was very happy when she and Andrew walked to the church just outside her village. After the wedding, they would go to Port Bredy and spend the day there, as a little holiday. They walked inside, and Parson (牧师) Billy looked at Andrew very hard.
“What’s this You’re drunk, my man! And so early in the morning, too! That’s disgraceful (有失体统)!”
“Well, that’s true, sir,” said Andrew, “But I can stand and I can walk. Better than a lot of people. You couldn’t stand and walk after a party at Tom Forrest’s house, could you, Parson No, you couldn’t.”
This answer didn’t please Parson Billy a bit. “I cannot marry (为……主持婚礼) you when you are drunk, and I will not!” Billy said. “Go home and get sober (清醒的)!”
Then the bride began to cry. “Oh, Parson, please marry us, please!”
“No, I won’t,” said Parson Billy. “I won’t marry you to a man who is drunk. It’s not right. I’m sorry for you, young woman, but you must go home. How could you bring him here drunk like this ”
“But if he isn’t drunk, he won’t come at all, sir!” said Jane, still crying hard.
But Parson Billy still said no. “Well, sir,” said Jane, “could you please go home and leave us here for two hours When you come back, Andrew will be sober. I want to stay here because if Andrew goes out of this church unmarried, wild horses won’t get him back here again!”
“OK,” said Parson Billy, “I’ll give you two hours, and then I’ll come back. ”

(2024·江苏泰州·一模)I love to eat, but feeding others is my love language.
—The preface
When I graduated from college and moved to Washington D.C. in 2017. To cure my loneliness, I made meals at home. And I always shared food with new friends. Because my food was pretty good, everyone asked me for the recipes (秘诀). I started my cooking blog in 2019.
As a little kid, I often sat and watched mum cook. I spent most of my childhood in the kitchen. Since then, I was interested in cooking. Before I could learn my mom’s best dishes, I left for France to go to college in 2015.
When studying in France, I was living alone for the first time in my life. I was crazily homesick. So, I started calling my mom and asking for the recipes for my favorite dishes. My mom didn’t have any recipes. She grew up in the kitchen with her mom too, and my grandma passed on her knowledge orally (口头地). Now it was my turn. Instead of following strict measurements (测量), I learned to cook by tasting and feeling.
At first, my blog was just a space for me to put what I had learned into writing. I didn’t want the secret behind dishes like my mom’s noodles and my dad’s tomato soup to disappear. I wanted to write down every piece of advice I was given in detail. These days, I experiment more. I’m not as strict with myself about making the dishes as I eat them. I just use seasonal food material as I like. My followers are growing and this makes me more confident in the kitchen.
The blog also increased my confidence at work and gave me a space to write about what I love. It has connected me to new friends online. Most importantly, I mix the tradition that I’ve experienced and something new.

The next morning, there was no wind and we were half a mile to the southeast of the low eastern coast. I hated the very thought of Treasure Island from the first look onward, although the sun shone bright and hot and anyone would have been glad to get to land after being so long at sea.
Without wind, we had to use small boats to pull the ship three or four miles round the island to a safe place to drop the anchor (锚).
The men all complained about it while the heat was building up. Afterwards, they sat around the deck (甲板) and the smallest order was received with an angry look.
“If I give another order,” said the captain (船长), “the whole crew (全体船员) will mutiny. Only Silver can help us. He wants the men to wait. Let’s allow them an afternoon on shore (海滨).”
Guns were given to all the honest men. Hunter, Joyce, and Redruth were told what was happening, and were less surprised. Then the captain went on deck to address (对……说话) the crew.
“Men, you’ve had a hot, tiring day,” he said. “The boats are still in the water. Any man who wants to go ashore for the afternoon can take the boats. You’ll hear a gun half an hour before the sundown to call you back.”
They all became happier at once. I think they thought they would find the treasure lying around on the beach! After some talk, six men stayed on board, and the other thirteen, including Silver, went ashore.
The mad idea occurred (发生) to me to go ashore that helped to save our lives. Six men were left by Silver, so we could not take control of the ship and because only six were left, the captain’s men did not need my help. So I quickly went over the ship’s side and into the nearest boat.

About 2000 years ago, Volcano Vesuvius erupted (火山喷发), destroying the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Now scientists are working to decode (破译) one of the great mysteries of that time—the scrolls of Herculaneum (赫库兰尼姆卷轴).
In 1752, workers digging in Herculaneum discovered over 600 scrolls. Most of them were made from papyrus—a paper-like material. The heat from the volcano had burned the scrolls so much that they looked like chunks of charcoal (木碳块). The scrolls were so fragile that just touching them could make them fall apart. So
scientists have been looking for ways to read the scrolls without opening them.
Brent Seales, a computer scientist at the University of Kentucky has been working on this for over 20 years. He developed a method of using a CT scanner to take 3D X-ray images of a papyrus scroll. In 2016, his team used this method to read a burned scroll found near the Dead Sea. But the scrolls from Herculaneum are much harder. This method didn’t work well. Still, Dr. Seales hoped to decode them and trained an AI program. Though he was making progress, it was slow going. Then he met with two businessmen. They had the idea of holding a competition for decoding the scrolls.
The competition offered large prizes. About 1,500 people have taken part in it. These people are sharing information as they make progress, so everyone can build on those ideas.
In August, 2023, Casey Handmer found a pattern that showed where the ink had been on the scrolls. Following his lead, Luke Farritor, a 21-year-old student, created an AI program that found a whole word: “πopφúραc” which means “purple”. This was the first word ever read from these ancient scrolls.
Soon afterward, Youssef Nader used a different method to find the same word. For their efforts, Mr. Handmer and Mr. Nader each won $10,000. Mr. Farritor won $40,000.
Now people are working to earn the competition’s $700,000 top prize, which is for decoding four longer sections of the scroll.
“With all the recent progress, it’s likely that someone will win this prize, too. For me, reading words from within the Herculaneum scrolls is like stepping onto the moon,” Dr. Seales says. “Now it is time to explore.”

(2024·江苏淮安·一模)It was 8:00 a. m.. A group of college students got out of my car to make a video in the park. My job, as the driver, was to stay nearby and waited for them.
Since I could have several hours’ free time, I decided to go somewhere and do some reading. I found a beautiful bench against a wall. I noticed that a man was sitting on one end, but there was plenty of room for at least two more bodies. I walked over and sat beside him to have a rest.
I quickly discovered that the man would probably spent the night on the bench. His clothes were dirty, his hair was untidy, and soon I caught a bad smell of body sweat (汗水). I looked at him and smiled, and he smiled back.
We both sat there for over an hour peacefully. I was reading. He was watching the video making. He then stood up, walked in front of me and bowed (鞠躬). In a little shaky but clear voice, he said, “Thank you.”
I lifted my head.
“For what ” I questioned.
He looked at the ground as he said, “Usually people won’t even look at me, but you are willing to sit by me. ________”

At Hangzhou Dinglan Experimental Middle School in Zhejiang, an exciting event took place earlier this year. The students weighed a Pig!
Since 2017, the school has built a small ecological (生态的) farm for pigs. Every year, teachers and students work together to discuss and use scientific ways to weigh the pigs. They have used methods like levers (杠杆)and Archimedes5 principle (阿基米德定律). This time, students chose to use Magdeburg hemispheres (马德堡半球).
First, the students used a pump (泵)to get the air out of the hemispheres, and then connected them to a cage where the pig was. When they turned on a switch (开关)to let air in, the pressure inside the hemispheres increased. With a loud “bang”, the hemispheres pulled apart, showing a pressure difference. Then, they worked out the pig's weight with a special formula (公式),using the pressure difference. Their experiment (实验)worked.
Getting the pig to the test site was quite challenging, however. The pig was much larger than it was last year, making it harder for the students to deal with. “As the pig was about to enter the cage, it suddenly lay down and didn’t move at all,” 13-year-old Liu Nian says. In the end, they managed to push it into the cage.
After experimenting a few times and dealing with the results, the students found that the black pig weighed 165.3 kilograms, very close to its known weight of 154.5 kg.
Besides the fun of the task, the students also deepened their understanding of science through the activity. “We use what we learn in textbooks to solve real problems. This helps us know what we have learned better and makes science even more attractive,” said 14-year-old Hu Yulin.
40.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about

A.It helped them find fun in life. B.It taught them how to raise pigs.
C.It taught them to love animals. D.It helped them enjoy science better.
(2024·江苏苏州·一模)Have you ever imagined that a mobile-phone maker could produce cars one day Xiaomi answered this question with its newly produced electric car SU7.
Three years ago. Lei Jun announced that he would make cars. At that time, online users joked that he should make electric cars as his name has something to do with electricity. Over the years, even the electronics giant like Apple gave up the idea of making electric cars. However, Lei Jun kept his words and really made it.
The company, best known for its popular smartphones, showed its SU7 model on March 28 in China this year. Actually, it is the first electric car from a phone maker. The SU7 would sell for 215,900 yuan to 299.900 yuan in China. The starting price is about 30,000 yuan cheaper than Tesla’s Model 3, which starts at 245.900 yuan.
“This is to keep my promise made three years ago,” he wrote on Tuesday. Lei also added that he’s confident about entering the EV (电动汽车) market, though the competition is strong.

② Boya was good at playing guqin. The music he played was exquisite and pleasant to listen to. Although many people praised his music, he believed that he had never come across anyone who could really understand his music. One day, he was playing music on his way home on the boat. Ziqi, a woodcutter who happened to pass by was listening to him by the riverside. Boya invited him on board and played tunes (曲) that described high mountains and flowing water. To Boya’s surprise, Ziqi could understand exactly what he wanted to express through his music. Boya was overjoyed and they became good friends. Daniella Hudson grew up in a very creative family. “Mum and dad made all our furniture,” she says. “Not because we couldn’t afford it, they just preferred making items to buying them. So visits to city furniture shops nearby just weren’t part of my childhood.” When Daniella visited a design show with her class at the age of ten, she realized she wanted to follow her parents’ example. “There were so many different styles of tables and chairs there,” she says. Since that day, she’s been making furniture. “I’ve learned by giving mum and dad a hand, and through watching videos on the Internet,” she adds.
Her first piece was a table, made soon after visiting the show. It was similar to one she had seen there. “They had furniture from the last hundred years, and I copied a 1920s design,” says Daniella. “Sadly, no one has wanted tables like that for years. I was pleased with the quality of my work, though. I’ve painted it recently because the wood I chose at the start was too dark.”
Daniella started selling her furniture at a local market. “I spent most of my free time inside, so this gave me the chance to get some fresh air and find out what people thought about my designs.” Judging by how many items Daniella sold, they thought it was pretty good. “In the end, I had to give up,” says Daniella. “I’d also started an Internet business, which was doing so well. It was taking up every spare minute I had. The market closed down just after that anyway.”
Recently, Daniella was asked to take part in a local design show. “One of the organizers had bought one of my pieces off the Internet. I couldn’t believe it when she told me there would be a thousand visitors,” she says. Instead of worrying about this, Daniella was excited by the chance. “I was amazed she thought my work was good enough,” Daniella says. “I had little idea what visitors would think about it. My furniture is quite different from
the designers whose work I’ve seen in magazines—mine is more traditional.” But Daniella received lots of orders at the show and the future is looking bright for this young design star.

Set in the German city of Hamburg, the Story of a Seagull and the Cat Who Taught Her to Fly is about a seagull called Kengah. While diving into the sea for food, she is suddenly hit by the “curse of the sea”—a wave in oil coming from an oil tanker (油轮) in trouble.
