A person comes towards you and says “hi”. But you have no idea who he or she is . If you often experience this, you may have face blindness (脸盲).
A new study showed that face blindness might be more common than we thought. One in 33 people may have it. Some have serious problems. They cannot even recognize friends or families. But some just have smaller problems. They spend a long time remembering faces. People could be born with face blindness, or develop it if they hurt their brain.
Face blindness sounds like just a small problem. But according to Joseph DeGutis, the writer of the study, people with it may have a bad social life. “Recognizing someone is a social signal. It means ‘you are important to me’,” DeGutis told Harvard Medicine News. Not recognizing others may lead to misunderstanding, and then fewer friends. Worry about recognizing faces may also make people stay away from social life.
Here are signs of face blindness. In films, you sometimes fail to tell the difference between characters. When a close friend changed their hairstyle, you couldn’t recognize them. When you meet a new group of people, it
takes a long time before you can recognize each person. You’re not famous, but lots more people recognize you than you can recognize in return. If you see a person in two different places (for example in your school and in a shopping mall), you might think of them as two different people.
In the past, people paid little attention to this. The studies on face blindness only began in the 1990s. Today, more scientists and organizations are working to tell more people about face blindness and its effects on our social life.
31.What does the new study tell us about face blindness
A.It may happen to 33 people.
B.It may cause more serious problems than we thought.
C.It makes most people forget their families’faces.
D.It is the result of hurting one’s brain in childhood.
32.What does “recognize friends or families” in Paragraph 2 mean
A.take good care of friends or families
B.talk face-to-face with friends or families
C.pick out the faces of friends or families
D.communicate with friends or families easily
33.According to Joseph DeGutis, how might people feel when you can’t remember their faces
A.They might think it is just a small problem.
B.They might think you don’t care about them.
C.They might want to know more about face blindness.
D.They might start to feel worried about your social life.
34.According to Paragraph 3, what might people with face blindness do
A.Stop taking part in social activities.
B.Care more about their looks.
C.Try to better understand their friends.
D.Study other people’s social life.
35.What might the writer go on to write about in the fifth paragraph
A.Why some people have face blindness.
B.How people with face blindness help each other.
C.Why there were not many studies about face blindness in the past.
D.How scientists and organizations improve people’s knowledge of face blindness.

There was a young woman who took great pride in her flower garden. She was raised by her grandmother who taught her to love and care for flowers. 36
One day, while she was looking through a flower list she often ordered from, a picture of a plant caught her eyes. 37
“I have to have it,” she said to herself, and she ordered it at once.
When it arrived, she already had a place prepared to plant it. She planted it at the back of her yard. It grew well, with beautiful green leaves all over it, but there were no blooms. Day after day she continued to water it, feed it, and she even talked to it trying to make it bloom. 38
One morning weeks later, when standing before the vine, she felt very sad that her plant had not bloomed. 39
It was at this point that her neighbor, whose yard joined hers, called over to her. “Thank you so much! You can’t imagine how much I have enjoyed the blooms of that vine you planted.” The young woman walked through the gate into her neighbor’s yard, and sure enough, she saw that on the other side of the wall the vine was filled with blooms.
40 The vine had grown through the crevices (缝隙) and it had not flowered on her side of the wall, but it had flowered on the other side.
Sometimes one may not see the good result of his effort, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t successful.
A.She had never seen blooms (花) on a flower like that before.
B.However, it was useless.
C.She was giving thought to turning it down and planting something else in its place.

It was December and the snow was falling quietly outside. The four March sisters were sitting around the fire in the parlor (客厅).
“Christmas isn’t Christmas without any presents,” Jo said sadly.
“I hate being poor!” Meg said, looking at her old dress.
“Some girls have lots of nice things, and other girls have nothing at all,” said Amy.
“I don’t think it’s fair.”
“But we’ve got Father and Mother, and each other,” said Beth. The four sisters looked happy for a moment when they remembered this.
Then Jo said, “But we haven’t got Father.” Their smiles suddenly disappeared. Mr. March was far away with the soldiers.
“Mother says the men are suffering (受苦) and we mustn’t spend money for pleasure,” Meg said, “That’s why we can’t have presents this year.”
“Well, each of us has a dollar to spend,” said Jo, “What can the army do with four dollars Nothing! I don’t expect anything from Mother but I’d like to buy a book for myself.” Jo loved reading and she had a passion for books.
“I want to spend mine on some new music,” said Beth. She played the piano and she loved singing.
“I’m going to buy a box of drawing pencils. I really need them” said Amy. She wanted to be an artist. “Mother didn’t say anything about spending our own money,” cried Jo, “We work hard for it, so let’s buy what we want and have a little fun.”
It was true. The two older sisters had jobs. Meg worked as a teacher for the King family and Jo looked after Aunt, March, their father’s rich, bad-tempered old aunt. Beth and Amy helped with the housework.
Just then the clock struck six. Beth got up and put her mother’s slippers near the fire to warm.
“Those slippers are very old,” said Jo, “Mother needs some new ones.”
“I can buy a pair for her with my dollar,” said Beth.
“No, I’m the oldest,” Meg said, “I want to buy the slippers for her.”
“No, it’s my job,” said Jo. “Father told me to take care of Mother while he was away.”
“I have an idea,” said Beth. “Let’s not spend our money on ourselves. Let’s get some presents for Mother.”
Her sisters thought that it was a very good idea.
