The world is a lot greener thanks to a young man named Felix. Ever since he was 9 years old, he has been trying to save the planet. In 2007, Felix started an environmental organization called Plant-for-the-Planet. It encourages and teaches children from around the world to plant trees. The first tree for Plant-for-the-Planet was planted in Germany, Felix’s home country, in March, 2007.
The organization has made great progress in saving the trees with the help of over 100, 000 children between the ages of 9 and 12. Within one year since it was set up, 150, 000 trees had been planted in different regions of the world. People often think of the North Pole (北极) and the South Pole as similar frozen (冰冻的) wastelands. They are both places with very cold temperatures and few people live there. However, the North Pole is not much alike the South Pole. Let’s learn something.
The North Pole has no land, only thick ice. Temperatures seldom go above 32 F, at which water turns into ice. Most of the time, it stays below zero. In winter temperatures are usually as low as -30 F.
Although conditions were poor, people tried for many centuries to reach the North Pole. About 100 years ago, two men, Robert Peary and Mathew Henson, were able to get to this environment full of troubles and problems. They reached the North Pole on March 8th, 1909. It was really a hard trip for them.
There are few things more dangerous than crossing the Arctic on foot. People who stayed there may face many problems: very cold temperatures, sudden storms, and even hunger. Most of the area is uninhabited, so few people can live in such a difficult place.
People might think that with such low temperatures for most of the year, the ice would be thick and hard. However, this is not true in the Arctic (北极). The movement (移动) of the ocean water under the ice may often cause many different changes on the surface. Sometimes the ice breaks into two opening lanes (水道) of water called “leads”. Anyone who falls into a lead can be frozen to death in a few minutes.
16.This passage is probably from ________.
A.a story book B.a science book C.a school report D.a computer magazine

19.The reason for the ice to break into two opening lanes of water is ________.
A.that the temperature suddenly drops B.that the water under the ice is frozen
C.that the ocean water under the ice moves D.that the surface is covered with lots of ice
20.What does this passage mainly talk about
A.The thick ice in the North Pole.
B.A difficult trip to the North Pole.
C.The real situation in the North Pole.
D.The differences between the North Pole and the South Pole.

根据“About 100 years ago, two men, Robert Peary and Mathew Henson, were able to get to this environment full of troubles and problems. They reached the North Pole on March 8th, 1909.” 故选A。
根据“so few people can live in such a difficult place”可知很少有人能生活在这样困难的地方,由此推出uninhabited意为“无人居住的”。故选D。
根据“The movement (移动) of the ocean water under the ice may often cause many different changes on the surface. Sometimes the ice breaks into two opening lanes (水道) of water called ‘leads’.”

C
There’s much to see under the sea, but you need to remember that light behaves differently in water than in air. The objects appear closer to you than they exactly are. You might find yourself reaching out to touch something and completely missing it.
Objects under water will appear larger than they would on the surface, too. Be careful not to tell any stories about the big fish that got away. That fish might not be so big after all! It’s just because sometimes things can seem to be as much as about 33 percent bigger in water!
What’s more, in deeper water, colors just don’t seem as bright. In fact, it looks as if some colors are missing. Remember the color of an object results from the wavelengths (波长) of light that are reflected (反射) from its
surface. And light is taken in as it moves down through the water.
Swimmers wear wet suits to keep warm underwater. Let’s take a bright red, yellow, and blue wet suit as an example. These colors are hard to miss on the surface of water. Watch carefully the changes in color as you descend in the water. The red part now looks almost black because the red light wavelengths, the longest among these three colors, are missing. As you go down deeper, the same thing will happen to the yellow part and in the end to the blue part. Even at a place of about 6 to 9 metres underwater, you will look terrible, like a ghost (鬼怪)! And you have to wait for your return to the surface to enjoy the bright colors again!
21.You miss the object underwater when you want to touch it because ________.
A.it is not as close as it seems B.it disappears very quickly
C.your eyesight is quite poor D.you are not quick enough
22.The example of the wet suit is used to explain the change of ___ of an object underwater.
A.the position B.the weight C.the size D.the color
23.The underlined word “descend” probably means ________ in Chinese in this passage.
24.Which of the following is true
A.The wavelengths of red light are longer than those of blue light.
B.You will see a ghost if you go as deep as 6 to 9 metres into the sea.
C.Much water will be taken in by the swimmer deep in the water.
D.A four-metre-long fish looks three metres long underwater.
25.The best title of this passage is ________.
A.The Brightness of Color Underwater B.The Behavior of Light Underwater
C.The Standard of Color Underwater D.The Direction of Light Underwater
21.A 22.D 23.B 24.A 25.B
根据“The objects appear closer to you than they exactly are. You might find yourself reaching out to touch something and completely missing it.”
故选A。
根据文中“Swimmers wear wet suits to keep warm underwater. Let’s take a bright red, yellow, and blue wet suit as an example. These colors are hard to miss on the surface of water. Watch carefully the changes in color as you descend in the water.”
根据文中“As you go down deeper, the same thing will happen to the yellow part and in the end to the blue part.”
根据文中“The red part now looks almost black because the red light wavelengths, the longest among these three colors, are missing.” 故选A。
通读全文尤其根据文中“There’s much to see under the sea, but you need to remember that light behaves differently in water than in air.”

And four years after it started, it had reached its goal of planting a total of 1 million trees around the world.
Restoring (恢复) lost trees is important to preventing the climate crisis (气候危机). Trees capture CO from the atmosphere (大气层) and store the carbon in their leaves, stems, and roots, eventually increasing the carbon stored in soil. The world currently (目前) has three trillion trees and can host a trillion more. Trees are one of the most powerful tools that buy us time in the fight against the climate crisis.
“Forests are not only the livelihood (生计) of the people, but for us children, forests are our future”, Felix once said.Plant-for-the-Planet has called on outstanding children and young people from over 90 countries.

Remember the color of an object results from the wavelengths (波长) of light that are reflected (反射) from its surface.
