In this unit, teaching activities are based on “The?unexpected?things”. “Narrate the past” is the fun_ction of this part. Students have learned “the Past Tense” , now they will learn and use “the Past Perfect Tense”. 3a-3c is a reading period, during the teaching, students will learn some new words and sentences, they also can have a better understanding of “Narrate the past” by reading two stories. At the same time, they can develop their reading skills and improve their reading abilities. According to the teaching material, the learning condition, the theory of teaching reading, I set the following teaching aims :
Knowledge aims :
1. To?learn?some?new?words?and?phrases:block, in line with, worker, stare, disbelief, above, burn, burning, alive, airport, till , west
2. To learn and master some useful sentences:
Life is full of the unexpected.
I was about to go up when I decided to get a coffee first.
As I was waiting in line with other office workers, I heard a loud sound.
Before I cold join the others outside to see what was going on, the first plane had already hit my office building.

2、Train students to describe the past events with the Past Perfect Tense.
Difficult points :Students can understand the differences between the Past Tense and the Past Perfect Tense , then they can narrate the past events with the two tenses. IV、 Teaching and learning methods According to the fact of the students and the teaching material, In order to accomplish the teaching aims , I will use the following methods:
Teaching methods:
1、Pair work or group work method (work and help together)
2、 Task-based teaching method (read the passage with some tasks).
Learning methods:
1、Students circle the key words and sentences while they are reading.
2、Work in groups, learn from each other.

(一)Review the words Ask some students to read、spell the words of this part , then use some of them to make up sentences. block n. 街区

unexpected adj.出乎意料的(二)Leading in Point to the word unexpected , let students say its meaning,then tell Ss: Life is full of the unexpected. Have you ever heard any unexpected things? Then show two pictures about the passage to the students and ask them to look at 3a. (三) Reading
Fast reading: Point to the two pictures and say: there are two unexpected things in the passage, please read the passage quickly and answer the questions:
1) Which two events does the writer mention?
2) How did the writer end up missing both events?
After a while, ask some students to report their answers to the class.Write the events on the blackboard as they report
(Demands:students should do it by themselves. This can develop students to read the passage quickly and find the answers to the questions. )
Careful reading:
Read paragragh1, answer the following questions:
1)What time did the writer arrive at the World Trade Center on September 11,2001?
2) What did the writer decide to do first ?
3) How far away was the coffee place from his office ?
Read paragragh2, put the sentences into the right order:
A、I woke up at 10:00 a.m. on February 21, 2011 and realized that my alarm never went off.
B、By the time I got to the airport, my plane to New Zealand the day before.
C、The next morning, I heard about the earthquake in New Zealand had already taken off.
D、The other planes were full so I had to wait till the next day.
E、I jumped out of bed and went straight to the airport.

Read the passage again , find words from the passage with opposite meanings to the words below.

2. Let Ss write a sentence with each word on their own. Ask some of them to say their sentences.
eg: lost—found I found the money on the floor.
(Demands:give an example to students, first students do it by themselves. then work in groups, so they can improve together. )
Listen and retell
Students listen to the tape carefully, then with the help of the given words, ask students to try to retell the events.
Given words and phrases:
the first event: September 11,2001, arrived at, was about to, even though, stared, in disbelief, the burning building, alive……
the second event: woke up, went off, had taken off, till, unexpectedly, turned into ……
While students are listening to the tape, tell them to pay attention to pronunciation、stress and pause.
Encourage more students to rewrite and retell the events, it is good for them to practice their writing and speaking. (四)Exercise
