阅读下列短文, 从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Around the world, coral reefs (珊瑚礁) are in danger. Now, let’s check out a few ways conservationists are protecting these habitats.
Seaweed Smackdown
Hot ocean temperatures can supercharge seaweed growth — and that’s not good for a reef. So, in Hawaii, scientists have used an underwater vacuum (真空吸器) to suck up lots of seaweed into the device’s long tube. In Australia, scientists are studying a low-tech solution: pulling seaweed by hand.
21
Some polyps (珊瑚虫) are harmed by heat waves and pollution. Scientists cut parts of coral from a healthy reef. Then these polyps are taken to a nursery, which could be in shallow protected areas underwater. After about a year, the healthy coral parts are attached to damaged reefs. The nursery-grown corals can bring new life to a struggling habitat.
Sound Saver
Healthy reefs are noisy. Fish make different sounds, and thousands of shrimp create and pop bubbles with their claws to create a sound. The biologists play sounds of healthy reefs through underwater speakers. They found that six weeks of broadcasting healthy reef sounds doubled the amount of fish in the area.
Bleaching Killer
One of the biggest threats to coral reefs is bleaching. Here’s how it works.
Thriving coral Most coral species survive by partnering with tiny algae (藻类), which make food for the coral by changing sunlight into sugar. Under stress But when the ocean water gets too hot, the algae produce too much oxygen, which can hurt the coral. Bleaching So corals kick out the algae. As the algae leave, the color disappears and the coral appears to turn white. This process is called bleaching.
Biologists have discovered that many corals in the Red Sea have a species of algae in their tissue that’s found nowhere else, so they can survive heat waves. Biologists hope their work will inspire governments and environmental groups to protect these corals.
1.Which of the following might be the subtitle of Paragraph 3
A.Underwater Nurseries. B.Fishing Guides.
C.Seaweed Cleaners. D.Colour Designers.
2.What can mainly help stop corals bleaching
A.Breathing in more oxygen. B.Changing the appearance.
C.Absorbing more sound. D.Partnering with algae.
3.What is the author’s purpose of writing this passage
A.To present the serious damages to corals. B.To explain the reasons for coral habitat loss.
C.To introduce the methods of coral protection. D.To compare the effects of different solutions.
【答案】1.A 2.D 3.C
【导语】这是一篇应用文。文章介绍了自然资源保护主义者保护珊瑚礁的几种方法。
1.主旨大意题。根据第三段第二句到最后一句“Scientists cut parts of coral from a healthy reef. Then these polyps are taken to a nursery, which could be in shallow protected areas underwater. After about a year, the healthy coral parts are attached to damaged reefs. The nursery-grown corals can bring new life to a struggling habitat.(科学家们从健康的珊瑚礁上切下部分珊瑚。然后这些珊瑚虫被带到苗圃,苗圃可能位于水下的浅水保护区。大约一年后,健康的珊瑚部分会附着在受损的珊瑚礁上。苗圃生长的珊瑚可以给挣扎中的栖息地带来新的生命。)”可知,第三段主要对水下育苗场进行了介绍。故选A。
2.细节理解题。根据Bleaching Killer部分中的“Most coral species survive by partnering with tiny algae (藻类), which make food for the coral by changing sunlight into sugar.(大多数珊瑚物种通过与微小的藻类合作而生存,这些藻类通过将阳光转化为糖来为珊瑚提供食物。)”和“Biologists have discovered that many corals in the Red Sea have a species of algae in their tissue that’s found nowhere else, so they can survive heat waves. Biologists hope their work will inspire
根据第一段“Around the world, coral reefs (珊瑚礁) are in danger. Now, let’s check out a few ways conservationists are protecting these habitats.(世界各地的珊瑚礁都处于危险之中。现在,让我们来看看自然资源保护主义者保护这些栖息地的几种方法。)”可知,作者写这篇文章的目的是介绍保护珊瑚的方法。故选C。
B
A year ago, my wife and I sold one of our cars and replaced it with an e-bike. I knew that passenger vehicles are responsible for much of our greenhouse-gas emissions. I also knew that electric cars were an imperfect fix. Though they’re responsible for less carbon pollution than gas cars, their supply chain is carbon intensive. But an e-bike’s comparatively tiny battery means less electricity, fewer emissions and fewer resources. E-bikes are clearly better for the planet than cars of any kind.
But I also viewed getting rid of my car as a sacrifice. I live in Colorado; e-biking would mean freezing in winter and sweating in summer. It was the right thing to do, I thought, but it was not going to be fun.
I was very wrong. The first thing I noticed was the savings. Between car payments, insurance, maintenance (保养), and gas, a car-centered lifestyle is expensive. I predict that we’ll save about $50,000 over the next five years by selling our car.
The actual experience of riding to work each day over the past year has been equally surprising. In winter, I wear gloves, warm socks, a thick cap, and a ski jacket when I ride, and I am almost never too cold. In summer, I didn’t break a sweat. I just used the throttle (油门), sat back, and enjoyed my ride.
I arrived to work a little more lighthearted for having spent the morning in fresh air rather than traffic. I jumped on my bike after a stressful day at work and rode home down a street edged with changing fall leaves. I felt more connected to the physical environment around me than I had when I’d traveled the same route surrounded by metal and glass.
4.Why did the author change a car for an e-bike
A.He wanted to do something good for environment.
B.He thought that e-bikes would replace gas vehicles.
C.He couldn’t afford the expensive transportation costs.
D.He believed e-bike’s supply chain was environment-friendly.
5.What did the author think he would sacrifice for the e-biking
A.The traffic safety. B.The traffic comfort.
C.The traffic economy. D.The traffic convenience.
6.What is the author’s feeling about having ridden an e-bike for a year
A.Tolerant. B.Unexpected. C.Conservative. D.Compromising.
7.What is the best title for the text
A.Changes Brought by an E-bike B.My Green Life for the Last Year
C.The Replacement for Gas Vehicles D.Comparation Between Cars and E-bikes
【答案】4.A 5.B 6.B 7.A

Every year over the Christmas holiday, I declutter and organize my kids’ rooms. I just can’t stand the thought of adding more clutter (杂物) to their cabinets when they’re already fully packed with all that stuff. It’s no secret that clutter weighs on us mentally, and when it’s not dealt with, the problem only worsens. All that stuff can make us feel anxious and overwhelmed. And if it’s in our bedrooms, it can even keep us from sleeping well. Research has shown that those with cluttered bedrooms have more trouble getting enough sleep.
I separate their toys, books, and clothing into one of three piles: for donations, friends with younger children, and, finally, that which is too damaged to keep at all. The process can take hours, but when I’m done, there’s a huge weight lifted as all the clutter finds a new home.
Organizing and decluttering our space gives us a sense of control over our surroundings, says Jourdan Travers, a psychotherapist and clinical director of Awake Therapy in New York City. “Mess is stress. Humans have limited bandwidth, and it isn’t easy to focus on essential tasks when we are in messy or unclean spaces,” says Travers. The research backs this up. A study published in the September 2017 issue of Current Psychology found that “clutter problems led to a significant decrease in satisfaction with life among older adults.” The study found that those who delay decluttering because of “indecision” end up with a mounting issue that weighs on their mind.
Sometimes, however, we have trouble parting with our stuff. It can start to mount up because the task of decluttering and reorganizing can start to feel overwhelming and intense. There are various reasons why we hold onto stuff, some of which are valid. If something is a family heirloom, for example, and has deep meaning, we may not want to part with it.
Maybe it’s that outfit you hope one day you’ll fit into. Maybe the items were expensive, and even though you don’t wear them anymore, you hate the idea of parting with them. If there are some items you have trouble parting with, try getting rid of the easy stuff first.
8.What is a direct consequence of cluttering
A.One will feel out of control over his life.
B.One will feel burden piling up in his brain.
C.One will feel unable to deal with all the stuff.
D.One will feel relieved by his mental problems.
9.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word “bandwidth” in paragraph 3
A.Brain capacity.
B.Work efficiency.
C.Energy level.
D.Learning competence.
10.In what way is decluttering rewarding
A.It can boost our well-being.
B.It can bring hope to the needy.
C.It can guarantee a sound sleep.
D.It can teach children how to organize.
11.What can be the best title for the text
A.Decluttering-A Lifestyle in fashion.
B.Decluttering-A Psychological Therapy.
C.Decluttering-A Solution to “Indecision”.
D.Decluttering-A Way to Clear Our Mind Out.

In a new study, researchers found that invasive insects in the United States could kill approximately 1.4 million urban trees by 2050, which would cost over $900 million to replace, reports Vishwam Sankaran for the Independent.
Hot spots predicted to have the most urban tree mortality (死亡率) were Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Chicago, Illinois; and New York, New York. The study, published in the Journal of
Applied Ecology, is the first nationwide forecast of street tree mortality from invasive insects.
The emerald ash borer is an invasive beetle native to Asia. It was first detected in 2002 in southeastern Michigan, and experts suspect it was brought into the United States on wood packing material carried on cargo ships or airplanes traveling from Asia. Since then, the bug has been damaging ash trees. In the last two decades since the insect was first detected, numerous trees have been killed in North America.
Data collected from 30,000 communities across the country was used to estimate tree mortality in the next 30 years. The researchers combined this data with a model that predicted the spread of 57 different invasive insect species. Their results show emerald ash borers alone could cause 90% of the estimated 1.4 million tree deaths. Ash borers are already predicted to “kill virtually all ash trees” in over 6,000 urban areas, according to Newsweek.
Less than 25% of 30,000 urban areas in the U.S. are expected to experience 95% of all street-tree mortality, reports Adam Barnes for the Hill. The areas that will experience the most tree loss include cities in the Midwest and East Coast. These locations are expected to have the most tree loss because large numbers of ash trees occupy the streets and parks in these areas, reported the Independent.
When it comes to how to save urban areas from becoming treeless, study author Emma Hudgins, a biologist at McGill University, says, “These results can hopefully provide a cautionary tale against planting a single species of tree throughout entire cities, as has been done with ash trees in North America. Planting various trees provides resilience against pest infestations (侵扰).”
12.What can we know about the emerald ash borer
A.It is an invasive beetle in Asia.
B.It was first found by the Michigan people.
C.It has killed numerous trees in America.
D.They definitely enter the U.S. by cargo ships or airplanes.
13.What is the fourth paragraph intended to describe
A.The purpose of the research. B.The conclusion of the research.
C.The significance of the research. D.The process and result of the research.
14.What can be inferred from the fifth paragraph
A.Pest infestations are taking place across the country.
B.The insect’s invasion won’t spread equally in America.
C.Tree loss is the main cause of environmental problems.
D.Ash trees are being removed from many areas in the U.S.
15.What suggestion does Emma Hudgins provide
A.Getting different types of trees planted.
B.Replacing foreign trees with local ones.
C.Getting more trees planted in more areas.
D.Planting trees resistant to pest infestations.
【答案】12.C 13.D 14.B 15.A
根据文章第一段“The emerald ash borer is an invasive beetle native to Asia. It was first detected in 2002 in southeastern Michigan, and experts suspect it was brought into the United States on wood packing material carried on cargo ships or airplanes traveling from Asia. Since then, the bug has been damaging ash trees. In the last two decades since the insect was first detected, numerous trees have been killed in North America.”(翡翠灰螟是一种来自亚洲的入侵性甲壳虫。
根据文章第四段“The researchers combined this data with a model that predicted the spread of 57 different invasive insect species. Their results show emerald ash borers alone could cause 90% of the estimated 1.4 million tree deaths.”(研究人员将这些数据与一个预测57种不同入侵昆虫扩散的模型结合起来。他们的结果显示,仅翡翠灰螟就可能导致预计的140万棵树木死亡的90%。)可知,这一段描述了研究的过程和结果。故选D。
14.推理判断题。根据文章第五段“Less than 25% of 30, 000 urban areas in the U.S. are expected to experience 95% of all street-tree mortality, reports Adam Barnes for the Hill. The areas that will experience the most tree loss include cities in the Midwest and East Coast.”(据Adam Barnes报道,预计美国的30000个城市中不到25%的地方将经历所有街道树木死亡的95%。将会经历最多树木损失的地区包括中西部和东海岸的城市。)可知,这种昆虫的入侵在美国的传播并不均衡。故选B。
15.细节理解题。根据最后一段“These results can hopefully provide a cautionary tale against planting a single species of tree throughout entire cities, as has been done with ash trees in North America. Planting various trees provides resilience against pest infestations(侵扰).”( 这些结果有望提供一个警示,不要在整个城市种植单一种类的树木,就像北美的白蜡树一样。”种植各种树木可以抵御虫害)可知,Emma Hudgins给出了种植不同种类的树木的建议。故选A。

Shyness is something that many people battle with every day. They are afraid to look people in the eyes and have a hard time speaking to new people. This makes it very hard to get ahead at work and in making new friends and business connections. 16 There are ways to get around this fear and get out there and start talking to people.
●Remember that most people are not looking at you. When you are shy you may believe that people are constantly watching and judging you. 17 Most people are always busy looking at themselves and worrying about what people think of them. When you are talking to someone new they are not picking apart your every word; they are worried about what you think of them.
● 18 Instead of always complaining yourself about things you think you are not doing better, turn your focus to the things that you do well. Your self-talk is very important to how you feel. Stop negative self-talk. Instead remind yourself every morning of all the great things you have to offer. Whenever you start feeling shy again run over your list of things that makes you happy.
●If you do not have an exercise routine, you should start one now. 19 You do not spend hours a day in the gym. You should spend about 30 minutes a day walking or doing something physical you enjoy. If you are physically capable you could also add 20 minutes of light weight training two or three days a week. 20 Being able to stand with your back straight and your head held high will definitely help overcome shy feelings.
A.Focus on your strengths.
B.This just is not the case at all.
C.Stop complaining about others.
D.They are brave to face any challenge in life.
E.Many people are shy because they fear rejection.
F.This will help you feel stronger and will improve your posture.
G.Check with your doctor if you have not worked out for a while and then get to it.

第二节(满分25分)
Tiffany’s difficulties began last year when she had guests at her home for Thanksgiving and then again for Christmas. Her husband had been in medical school and was now in the second year of his medical residency. Because of the long work hours required of him, he was not able to help her as much as they both would have liked, and so most of that which needed to be accomplished during this holiday season, in addition to the care of their four young children, fell to Tiffany. She was becoming overwhelmed, and then she learned that one who was dear to her had been diagnosed with cancer. The stress and worry began to take a heavy burden on her, and she slipped into a period of discouragement and depression. She sought medical help, and yet nothing changed. Her appetite disappeared, and she began to lose weight. Her family and friends prayed for her and tried desperately to help. They delivered her favorite foods in an attempt to keep her physically healthy, but she could take only a few bites and then would be unable to finish.
On one particularly trying day, her husband attempted in vain to persuade her with foods she had always loved. When nothing worked, he said, “There must be something that sounds good to you.”
Tiffany thought for a moment and said, “The only thing I can think of that sounds good is homemade bread.”
But there was none on hand.
The following afternoon Tiffany’s doorbell rang. Her husband happened to be home and
answered it. When he returned, he was carrying a loaf of homemade bread. Tiffany was astonished when he told her it had come from a woman named Sherrie, whom they barely knew. She was a friend of Tiffany’s sister Nicole and had been introduced to Tiffany and her husband briefly several months earlier when Nicole and her family were staying with Tiffany for Thanksgiving. Days later, Tiffany began to regain her appetite and feel hopeful about the future and she owed it to that loaf of bread from Sherrie.
Tiffany decided to visit Sherrie to express thanks.

【答案】Tiffany decided to visit Sherrie to express thanks. Wondering what kind of person Sherrie was, Tiffany knocked on the door. The door opened, and Sherrie appeared with a heartwarming smile which made Tiffany feel at ease a lot. During the caring conversation on Sherrie’s couch, Tiffany couldn’t help but ask: “Sherrie, how do you know about my condition in the first place ” Her words were met by Sherrie’s gentle smile. “Because I heard about it from your sister, and a good person like you deserve a fine pack of bread.” replied Sherrie.
Sherrie’s words revealed the reason why she delivered her bread and love to Tiffany. Being a kind and loving person, Sherrie would always share love and concern with people around her. Tiffany felt a strong sense of hope insider her mind, not only because of the homemade bread Sherrie made her, but also the love she received along with the heartwarming bread. Tiffany decided not to waste such a kindness, and she would pass on the love from others with her own action.

In winter, I wear gloves, warm socks, a thick cap, and a ski jacket when I ride, and I
am almost never too cold.
C
A study published in the September 2017 issue of Current Psychology found that “clutter problems led to a significant decrease in satisfaction with life among older adults.” The study found that those who delay decluttering because of “indecision” end up with a mounting issue that weighs on their
mind.

第二节(满分25分)
Tiffany’s difficulties began last year when she had guests at her home for Thanksgiving and then again for Christmas. Her husband had been in medical school and was now in the second year of his medical residency. Because of the long work hours required of him, he was not able to help her as much as they both would have liked, and so most of that which needed to be accomplished
during this holiday season, in addition to the care of their four young children, fell to Tiffany.
Her husband happened to be home and answered it.
