How to relieve ourselves of great stress Firstly, you are supposed to take some regular exercise after school, and listening to music is another good choice. In addition, reading some inspirational books is also a good way to lift ourselves up.
Come on, my dear friend. Believe in yourself and everything will go smoothly. Let’s take up challenge together bravely and I am here for you whenever you need. Best Wishes.
Yours,
Li Hua
67.“What happened ” asked my mother, seeing us in low spirits. “Well,” my brother slowly began, “we hit the tennis ball too hard and too high and it went right through the school window”. “Oh, my goodness!” my mother exclaimed. After a short pause, her voice softened when she asked us if we had reported this to the school. Lips bitten, we shook our heads. “It will cost all of our pocket money”, I muttered. “But there is always something more important than money”, she said soothingly, patting me on the shoulder. Slowly lifting my head, I encountered my mother’s encouraging eyes and a decision was made.
The following morning my brother and I went to the headmaster’s office. Nervous and frightened, we inched into the office. There sat our stern-looking headmaster. “We have something to confess...”, we spilled our story with a hint of fear in our voices. He looked very somber and we were sure that the news was bad. Then he smiled, “I am proud of you kids for having the courage to tell me what happened”. He could see our relief as he continued, “Many windows had been broken, but you were the first ones to admit that you were responsible. For that, you don’t have to pay for the broken window, because honesty comes before anything else”.

(Text 1)
M: Mum, I'm leaving for Vancouver tomorrow at 2:00 pm.
W: Honey, there is construction on the road on the way to the train station. Maybe you should go one hour earlier. That leaves extra time in case of bad traffic.
(Text 2)
M: The car won't start. I think we're out of gas. Maybe we can catch a bus to get to the restaurant.
W: There aren't any buses here. Let's walk. It's not far.
(Text 3)
M: Can you help me with my maths homework I can't do it.
W: Sure. How about tomorrow morning I've got a French class this afternoon.
M: OK. Thank you!
(Text 4)
W: Let's watch a documentary about volcanoes. But I'm afraid it's too bright in here. Could you please turn off the light while I turn on the TV
M: OK. And I'll bring some snacks.
(Text 5)
W: Wow! Look at all these different places to eat! There are so many choices. What are you going to have, Dan
M: I'm so hungry. I want a burger and a large order of fries.
(Text 6)
W: There they are! At last I've found them. I've been looking for them everywhere.
M: What Your keys You're always losing them.
W: I know, and I really thought I'd lost them for good this time.
M: Why don't you make sure you put them in the same place Then you'd have the satisfaction of finding them whenever you want them.
W: Good idea.
(Text 7)
W: Hi, Tim. What are you looking at
M: Oh, I've been reading some online reviews. I want to buy a digital camera, but I'm still not sure which one to get.
W: That's the problem with buying one from the Internet. You can't try something out before you buy it. Perhaps you should go to a store.
M: It's a shame that the local shop has such a small range of cameras. There's the mall, I suppose.
W: Oh, no, I wouldn't go there at this time of year. It'll be very crowded. The shop down the road is a lot better now than it used to be. There are new owners. You should give it a try.
M: Okay. Thanks for your advice.
(Text 8)
W: Now, breathe in and out. Good. I'm going to take your temperature. OK, that seems normal. Now lie down, please. If I push here, does it hurt
M: Ow! A little bit. Do you think it's my heart
W: Your heart Why would it be your heart You're sixteen years old.
M: My mum says I eat the wrong things and I eat too quickly. She thinks I'll have a heart attack.
W: I see. Well, your heart is fine. I think you've got indigestion. But your mother's right — you need to eat more slowly and you should drink more water. I'm going to give you some medicine. And you should come back for a check next week.
M: Aren't you going to do a blood test
W: No, I don't think that's necessary.
M: Oh good, thank you.
(Text 9)
M: Hi, you must be Sarah. I can tell from your picture. I'm Michael. Finally we meet! So we're going to be classmates this semester!
W: Yes, I recognize you from your photo, too! I'm so glad to meet you in person. I see from your T-shirt that you like baseball. I'm a big fan, too!
M: Well, the T-shirt was a present from my brother, who's a baseball player. Look at the back — it has a photo of all the players on his team. They won the city championship this summer.
W: That's great. I love to watch baseball. What about you Do you play a sport
M: Yes, I play tennis. What else do you like to do
W: Well, what I like to do best is dance. I'm studying classical ballet, but I also like to dance to pop music.

(Text 10)
Hi, everyone! My name's Lily and I'm a swimmer. I'm talking to you today because I want to encourage you to take up swimming. It's a great sport. It isn't expensive to do and it keeps you healthy. I learnt to swim when I was about five. I didn't learn it at the local leisure centre, but in my uncle's pool. When I started primary school, I joined a swimming club and I went swimming twice a week. I had a lovely trainer called Anna. She encouraged me to enter competitions and I did quite well. Nearly every Saturday a group of us from the swimming club went to other towns to have competitions. That was fun. After I'd won quite a lot of competitions, I moved into the advanced class at the club and I had a trainer who was once an Olympic winner! He wanted me to receive training every day after school for an hour and a half. My parents didn't agree because I needed to spare some time for my school work. But they let me go three days a week. I love swimming and I would really recommend it to everyone.内江二中高 25 届高二下学期期中考试试题

Kelli Boehle says her son Nik was an amazing and caring person. Nik was diagnosed(诊断) with
cancer in 2008 when he was 17. He passed away in 2012. But Nik’s kindness and generosity have
lived on long after his death.
After he was diagnosed and started treatment, Nik was granted (给予) a wish experience from the
Make-A-Wish Foundation. “For just this period of time, we didn’t think about cancer, ”Kelli Boehle
said. “All we thought about was enjoying our time together. ”
In 2009, Nik met another young man Nate, who was also going through cancer treatment. He’d
been diagnosed a month after turning 18, and Nik learned he was too old to qualify for a wish. The
night before Nik passed away, he asked his mother to help ensure that young adults fighting cancer
could have their wishes come true too.
“It was like a seed he planted that just wouldn’t stop coming into my mind, ” she said. In 2012,
Kelli Boehle started Nik’s Wish. The nonprofit organization grants wishes to young adults between the
ages of 18 and 24 who are battling cancer. Nate was the organization’s first wish recipient. “It’s meant
to bring them joy and know that they’re loved and that we’re fighting for them, too,” Kelli Boehle
said.
Recently, 19-year-old Jordan Morrow received her wish to attend a Taylor Swift concert as part of
a trip to Los Angeles. For Morrow, who has spent the last year battling brain cancer, going to the
concert has done more than lift her spirits. “I think it’s something to get me through whatever comes
my way,” she said. “And I’m thankful for Nik’s Wish for that.”
In the 11 years since Nik passed away, the organization has granted more than 300 wishes across
more than 30 states. In the beginning, Kelli Boehle says she wasn’t sure she could be a wish maker
and work closely with the young adults. But now, it’s her favorite thing to do.

The human body is designed to move. But modern lifestyles and office jobs rarely give us the
chance to move around. As we know, we sit while we’re eating, we sit in the car and we sit while
we’re watching TV. And many of us sit for many hours at work.
New research shows that sitting less than three hours a day might extend your life by two years.
Peter Katzmarzyk, a scientist at the University of Louisiana in the southern United States, says that
sitting is ubiquitous in our lives, meaning it is something we do all the time, everywhere.
However, Mr.Katzmarzyk says even that does not mean you can sit for the rest of your waking
hours. He also says you may exercise often. “We can’t throw away physical activity. It’s extremely
important. We have 60 years of research showing us that.”

{#{QQABLYSEggggAJJAARgCAwkCCAKQkBCACAoOQEAIsAAAiRFABAA=}#}
Mr.Katzmarzyk and his colleagues are part of a new generation of researchers studying how
sitting all day affects length of life.“Studies that have assessed the relationship between sitting and
mortality (死亡率)or television viewing and mortality are very rare. There have only been a few of
studies, actually five or six now,in the last four or five years.”They found that cutting television time
to less than two hours a day could add one-point four years to life.
Luckily, change is already coming to some offices, especially in the design of desks. A “standing
desk” lets people stand while they are working. Another new design is called the “treadmill desk”. A
treadmill is an exercise machine that lets you walk in one place. Even some U.S. schools are
beginning to experiment with desks that are part bicycle to keep children moving, that’s one of the
strategies that many companies are using now.
Mr. Katzmarzyk also says studying this problem has inspired his team to make a few changes in
their own lives.
28.The underlined word “ubiquitous” may mean
A.dangerous B.embarrassing
.
C.comfortable
D.common
29.Which view agrees with the opinion of Mr. Katmarzyk
A.Exercise is important, but so is not sitting.
B.Watching TV is bad, but can broaden one’s horizons.
C.Sitting too long may help increase one’s life.
D.Stopping watching TV is a necessary but hard task.
30.What does Mr. Katzmarzyk think of his study in Paragraph 4
A.It’s totally ignored by many experts.
C.It’s a study that begins too late.
B.It’s a relatively new area of study.
D.It’s a hot subject studied by experts.
31.Why is there change in the design of desks at some offices
A.To give workers more comfort.
B.To improve workers’ work efficiency.
C.To offer workers the chance to exercise.
D.To let workers seek pleasure while working.

While a survey of the Global Dietary Database for the years 1990, 2005, and 2018 found overall
consumption of sweetened drinks increased—by nearly 16% worldwide over the 28-year period
studied—regional intake widely varied, researchers say.
Sugary drinks have been widely connected to overweight and heart related diseases, which are
among the leading causes of death and years lost to disability globally. Many national guidelines
recommend limiting added sugars to less than 5% to 10% of daily calories, and because sodas (汽水)
add no nutritional value, some countries tax their consumption to help their residents meet this goal.
The study, published in Nature Communications, is the latest presentation of how adults in 185
countries drink sugar-sweetened beverages(饮料). Intakes varied widely by world region. In 2018, the
average person consumed 2.7 servings of sugary drinks per week, but this ranged from 0.7 servings
per week in South Asia to 7.8 servings per week in Latin America. And some of the highest sugary
drink intakes in the world were among urban, highly educated adults in Sub-Saharan Africa (12.4
servings per week) and in Latin America (8.5 servings per week). “We were struck by the wide
variations by world regions in 2018; that Latin America had the largest intakes at all time points
despite an overall decrease overtime; and that Sub-Saharan Africa had the greatest increases across all
time points,” says Laura Lara-Castor, a PhD candidate at Tufts University.
“These results suggest that more work is needed such as marketing regulations, food labeling, and
soda taxes.” Information from the Global Dietary Database, which gathers hundreds of survey results,
also revealed a relationship between sugary beverages and socio-economic status. “Sugar-sweetened

beverage intake has increased in the past few decades despite efforts to decrease their appeal,” says
researchers. “Some populations are especially easily affected, and our findings provide evidence to
inform the need and design of national and more targeted policies to reduce their intake worldwide.”
32.What is the main concern about sugary drinks
A. They are just a barrier to weight loss.
C. They are far from nutrition standard.
B. They are linked to health issues.
D. They are a total waste of money.
33. Why do some countries tax the consumption of sodas
A. To increase income for the government.
C. To discourage people from drinking sodas.
B. To promote the sales of healthier drinks.
D. To set a limit to the price of sugary drinks.
34. What is the primary focus of the study published in Nature Communications
A. Sugary drink consumption trends.
C. Regional variations in dietary habits.
B. Impact of soda taxes on purchases.
D. Global dietary information analysis.
35.What can we infer from the results of the study
A. Sugary drinks have nothing to do with economic status.
B. The appeal of sugary drinks cannot be underestimated.
C. Some people are very particular about the sugary drinks.
D. National policies on sugary drinks are more than enough.

When I was about ten years old, my brother and I received a wonderful gift — tennis rackets and
balls. We had never had the opportunity to play tennis, so this was exciting. However, there was one
problem — the small town we lived in did not have a tennis court.
One Sunday morning my brother said, “Hey, I’ve got an idea. Let’s take our tennis rackets and
balls to the school and hit the balls against the school building.”
“Great idea! Let’s go,” I agreed, not realizing what a lesson we would learn before the
experience was over.
When we got to the school ground, no one was around, so we began hitting our balls against the
side of the two-story brick building.
“I’ll hit it the first time,” my brother suggested, “then you hit it the next time. We’ll hit it back
and forth to each other.”
So we began taking turns hitting the ball, getting more confident with each stroke. Actually, we
became pretty good at returning the ball and we were hitting the ball higher and faster each time.
Suddenly, the unthinkable happened — the ball got out of control and went crashing through one

of the upstairs windows.
We looked around and no one was in sight — except there was an old man stting on a porch
halfway down the block.
Quietly, I asked, “Now what should we do Our ball is inside the school.”
“Well,” my brother responded, “no one will know whose ball it is. And no one saw us, except
that old man down there. And he probably can’t see this far.”
“He probably doesn’t know who we are anyway,” I added.
“Let’s go home,” my brother suggested.
“Okay,” I agreed. “Should we tell Mom and Dad ”
“I don’t know,” my brother answered.
Then we picked up the rest of our balls and headed for home, keeping silent all the way with our
heads drooping.
