As vast fields surrounding Beijing and Shanghai transformed into towering skyscrapers, and old bicycles gave way to motor vehicles, the essence of music communication remained unchanged over these shifts.
“I’ll never forget that I’ve never seen so many bicycles in my life,” Philadelphia Orchestra violinist Davyd Booth said, recalling his first tour in China 50 years ago. “Everyone rode a bicycle. There were literally hundreds, thousands.”
This month, 14 musicians from the Philadelphia Orchestra, including Booth, are returning to China, with performances scheduled in Beijing, Tianjin, Suzhou and Shanghai. The tour marks the 50th anniversary(周年纪念日) of their first visit in the 1970s, celebrating the unique friendship between China and the United States. Over the years, the orchestra(管弦乐团) has strengthened connections across China, with concerts and residencies that facilitate meaningful people-to-people interactions.
Booth said the 1973 tour was his first international trip with the orchestra. He considered himself lucky to have been part of the tour. He had just auditioned(试演) and got accepted into the orchestra that year. His official start date was scheduled after the orchestra’s return from China, but Booth received a call from the personnel manager informing him that someone had fallen ill. He then took the place and went to China.
“I was incredibly thrilled! Then, after I hung up, I realized I didn’t even have a passport,” Booth said. However, he got his passport and visa in just three days, thanks to the strong support from both countries. With his violin in tow, Booth joined the team on the 15-hour flight to China.
In addition to some regular compositions, the Philadelphia Orchestra also played the Yellow River Concerto, one of the most popular piano concertos in China even today. The Philadelphia Orchestra cooperated on this ensemble (合奏) with a Chinese pianist, marking the earliest ties between the US and China in music.
After the concert, the team was hanging around on the streets, Booth said. It was a fun experience even though people did not know how to talk to locals because of language barriers, he said. “You can communicate a lot by smiling, and it worked out very, very well,” he added.
24. What is the passage generally about
A. US artists will give live performances. B. Booth recalled his first visit to China.
C. Great changes have occurred in China. D. China and the US are living in peace.
25. What do you know from paragraph 3
A. The orchestra is popular in America. B. Music performances happen a lot in China.
C. Music communication remains active. D. Booth has come to China for the 50th time.
26. Booth meant that his getting the chance to come to China in 1973 was just a(an)______.
A. magic B. mistake C. luxury D. accident
27. What is the role music plays based on the passage
A. It serves to build bridge. B. It stimulates people’s interest.
C. It contributes to equality. D. It removes barriers to harmony.

While it may sound like something that has come out of your nightmares cyborg cockroaches (蟑螂机器人) have arrived as friends rather than enemies.
Scientists in Japan have designed a new remote-controlled insect, equipped with a battery “backpack” that is powered by solar panels. The cockroach, which is part insect and part machine, is intended to enter dangerous areas, monitor the environment or undertake search and rescue missions without needing to be recharged. The researchers from the RIKEN Cluster for Pioneering Research had to install some items into a tiny pack to allow for all the cockroach’s natural movements.
Being able to survive the tough conditions, cockroaches, the ancient insects, have been the stimulus for a number of technologies in recent years. Therefore, different teams of scientists have designed various remote controlled robo-bugs (机器虫) that can climb walls, carry objects and find humans during search-and-rescue missions.
Previously, wires were attached to the cyborg cockroach’s two sensory organs to send electrical signals that caused the “insect” to move right or left. A battery was necessary for the sending and receiving of these electrical signals, which needed to be charged up.
So the RIKEN team wanted to create a more practical one. Finally, they designed an on-board solar cell that could continuously ensure that the cockroach stayed charged while it worked. The solution was to design a special “backpack” that could neatly carry both the wireless leg-control module and rechargeable battery. This was attached to the top of the insect, and was 3D printed to fit perfectly to the surface of the cyborg cockroach. It allowed this electronic device to be firmly fitted on the “insect” for over a month.
28. Why did the scientists in Japan design the cyborg cockroaches
A. To help the disabled. B. To monitor the competitors.
C. To make an attempt at creation. D. To perform some tasks instead of humans.
29. What does the underlined word “stimulus” mean in paragraph 3
A. Inspiration. B. Method. C. Product. D. Outcome.
30. How does the cyborg cockroach control its movement
A. By batteries. B. By humans’ speech.
C. By the wireless legs. D. By the electrical signals.
31. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. Why scientists tried to improve the battery.
B. How scientists make full use of 3D technology.
C. How scientists invented more advanced cyborg cockroaches.
D. What scientists have done for designing a new backpack.
D
An Italian firm has invented what seems to be the perfect tool for stopping plastic waste from reaching the ocean through a river.
They had to check a lot of boxes. The device had to allow boats to pass without effort, while being able to run 24/7 with no impact on the river ecosystem. The result is River Cleaning, a 100% low-cost and low-impact solution.
Anchored (固定) to the bed at the bottom of the river, River Cleaning is made up of a series of floating devices, positioned diagonally (对角线地) on the course of the river; thus positioned, they can collect incoming plastic waste and transport it to the river bank for storage. Passing boats need only go straight through them at a low speed, after which their anchor lines will pull them back into place.
The River Cleaning system collects energy directly from the river current. It does not produce any type of waste. It is designed to have zero impact on the ecosystem. It only does good!
They can be adjusted to collect different kinds of waste, such as tiny particles (微粒), larger items like plastic bottles, and even oil, and some studies have shown River Cleaning can collect 85% of all waste passing by them.
Most people know of the scope of plastic pollution in the ocean, but it’s not as common to know that much of this waste comes from rivers — 80%, at least. Most of that 80% comes from just 100 of the world’s largest waterways. Running through big cities like Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok, the rivers funnel (使流经狭窄空间) waste into global ocean currents that lead plastic to clump together (聚集) in areas of the high seas.
River Cleaning became the first product of its kind to demonstrate that the system preserves the river environment while respecting the well-being of native species.
32. What does the underlined part “check a lot of boxes” probably mean
A. Ask for suggestions. B. Promote the products.
C. Come up with new ideas. D. Meet many requirements.
33. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. How River Cleaning works.
B. How River Cleaning was created.
C. Where River Cleaning is positioned.
D. What influence River Cleaning has on boats.
34. What can we infer about River Cleaning
A. It is powered by the natural flow of the river.
B. It may produce a small amount of waste.
C. It is unable to pick up tiny particles.
D. It may block the water passage.
35. What do the statistics in paragraph 6 show
A. Plastic pollution has a direct effect on port cities.
B. Inland waterways present huge challenges for cities.
C. The majority of plastic gets to the ocean through rivers.
D. Most people are unaware of plastic pollution in the ocean.

I had just changed into my running clothes and was leaving my office, off for a run even though it was well over 38℃ outside. I couldn’t explain it, but I felt the need to run despite the record heat. A quarter-mile into my jog, I was exhausted. I admitted defeat and turned around. As I approached my car, I saw a dog circling it.
When I reached for the door handle, the dog disappeared beneath the car into the shade. I grabbed my bottle and took a drink of water. I then got down on my knees to look for the dog. When I stood up, I found him sitting in the driver’s seat, panting (喘息). I reached over and started the car, turning the air conditioning on high. He turned his face toward the vents (通风孔), enjoying the cold air, his moustache blowing. I poured some water into the bottle cap and offered it to the dog. He drained it in a few desperate (渴望的) gulps (一大口). I refilled it several times before he had his fill.
He wore no collar (项圈). I walked around but there was no one in sight. I stood there, looking at the dog staring back at me through the window. He waited patiently as if he’d been in my car dozens of times before. I didn’t know what to do. Leaving him in that heat was out of the question. He would die.
I decided to drive him home. Before we were out of the parking lot, he had climbed onto my lap. He looked up at me, and then licked my sweaty face. “Ugh! No licking!”
I had never been a dog person. They smelt, they were loud, and they were messy. My newly-married husband had already resigned to the fact that we would never have a dog. And now one was in my car, on my lap! I pulled into my driveway and shrugged (耸肩) as my husband saw the dog, his eyes wide at this new development.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
I told him I was calling the animal shelter, lifting the dog out of the car.

Ten days later, I went to the shelter to bring the dog home.

根据第二段第二句“The cockroach, which is part insect and part machine, is intended to enter dangerous areas, monitor the environment or undertake search and rescue missions without needing to be recharged.(这种半昆虫半机器的蟑螂,可以在不充电的情况下进入危险区域、监测环境或执行搜索和救援任务)”可知,蟑螂机器人旨在进入危险区域,监测环境或执行搜索和救援任务,由此可推断出,科学家设计蟑螂机器人为的是让它们代替人类执行一些任务。
根据画线词所在句的下一句“Therefore, different teams of scientists have designed various remote controlled robo-bugs (机器虫) that can climb walls, carry objects and find humans during search-and-rescue missions.(因此,不同的科学家团队设计了各种远程控制的机器人虫子,它们可以爬墙,携带物体,并在搜索和救援任务中找到人类)”可推断出,能在恶劣环境中生存的蟑螂是许多技术产生的灵感。 故选A。
根据第四段第一句“Previously, wires were attached to the cyborg cockroach’s two sensory organs to send electrical signals that caused the “insect” to move right or left.(此前,人们将电线连接在生化蟑螂的两个感觉器官上,以发送电信号,使“昆虫”向左右移动)”可知,蟑螂机器人的移动是由信号控制的。
根据最后一段“So the RIKEN team wanted to create a more practical one. It allowed this electronic device to be firmly fitted on the “insect” for over a month.(所以RIKEN研究小组想要创造一个更实用的模型。最后,他们设计了一种机载太阳能电池,可以确保蟑螂在工作时持续充电。解决方案是设计一种特殊的“背包”,可以整齐地携带无线腿部控制模块和可充电电池。它被固定在昆虫的顶部,并通过3D打印与生化蟑螂的表面完美贴合。这个电子装置可以牢固地安装在“昆虫”身上一个多月)”可知,本段讲的是科学家们如何发明更高阶的蟑螂机器人。故选C。
D 33. A 34. A 35. C
根据第二段中“They had to check a lot of boxes. The device had to allow boats to pass without effort, while being able to run 24/7 with no impact on the river ecosystem. (他们不得不……。该设备必须允许船只毫不费力地通过,同时能够全天候运行而不会对河流生态系统产生影响。)”可知,设备必须满足许多条件,才能让船轻松通过,且全天候运行而不对河流生态系统产生影响,划线部分check a lot of boxes表达的意思是“满足许多条件”,故选D项。
【33题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第三段“Anchored (固定) to the bed at the bottom of the river, River Cleaning is made up of a series of floating devices, positioned diagonally (对角线地) on the course of the river; thus positioned, they can collect incoming plastic waste and transport it to the river bank for storage. Passing boats need only go straight through them at a low speed, after which their anchor lines will pull them back into place. (河道清洁装置锚定在河底的河床上,由一系列漂浮装置组成,在河道上对角线定位;这样一来,它们就可以收集进入的塑料垃圾并将其运送到河岸进行储存。过往船只只需以低速直接穿过它们,然后它们的锚绳就会将它们拉回原位。)”可知,第三段讨论河道清洁装置的工作原理。它描述了设备的结构和功能,包括其锚定在河床上、浮动装置的位置,以及它收集和运输塑料废物到河岸的能力。故选A项。
根据第四段中“The River Cleaning system collects energy directly from the river current. (河流清洁系统直接从河水中收集能量。)”可知,该设备利用河流的流动来收集能量运转,这意味着它由河流的自然流动提供动力。故选A项。
根据第六段中“Most people know of the scope of plastic pollution in the ocean, but it’s not as common to know that much of this waste comes from rivers — 80%, at least. Most of that 80% comes from just 100 of the world’s largest waterways. (大多数人都知道海洋中塑料污染的范围,但知道这些废物中的大部分来自河流并不常见——至少 80%。这80%中的大部分来自世界上最大的100条水道。)”可知,统计数据突显了河流对海洋塑料污染的重要贡献,表明大多数塑料废物是通过河流进入海洋的。故选C项。

I told him I was calling the animal shelter, lifting the dog out of the car. We sat together waiting for shelter workers, while the dog didn’t move except to lick my face. Strangely, I was already starting to like this feeling. I petted him, comforting him that everything would be okay. When the shelter workers arrived, he rose suddenly, and then lowered his eyes disappointedly. Seeing the sweet dog loaded onto the van, patting on the window helplessly, I felt a mixture of relief and sadness. My heart spoke before I knew it, “If he isn’t claimed, I’ll adopt him.”
Ten days later, I went to the shelter to bring the dog home. At the sight of me, he circled around me, wagging his tail and licking my hands cheerfully. As I opened the door, he couldn’t wait to jump onto the seat as he did on the day we first met. On our arrival, my husband had already prepared a cozy hut for him. In the following days, he followed me everywhere, expressing his gratitude to have a home. But I felt I was the one to be grateful, for the opportunity to experience such an unexpected bond with an animal.
