Even now, I have vivid memories of my last day of high school. In my mind’s eye, I’m cleaning out my locker, and then staring at the emptiness for a few extra beats before slamming it shut for the last time. I’m wandering around the halls with my best friend, blissfully ignoring the bells going off every 50 minutes on schedule because, just today, we’re allowed to break the rules. I’m sitting on my desk, swinging my feet, and shooting the breeze (闲聊) with my English teacher, Mr. Carr, in a way that makes me feel almost grown up.
It was maybe my favorite day of the whole year. Like the final layer of watercolor, the freedom and lightness I feel seeps (渗透) into the rest of my memories of that day and turns them just a shade rosier.
If the school year hasn’t yet ended for you, consider what you can do to make the finale count. Why Because when it comes to human memory, not all moments are created equal. Instead, our remembered experiences are disproportionately (不成比例地) influenced by peaks (the best moments as well as the worst) and endings (the last moments). Nobel Prize winner Danny Kahneman, who discovered this phenomenon, called this the peak-end rule. It suggests that our judgment of a past experience is largely based on its most extreme point and its endpoint.
I took advantage of the peak-end rule years ago, when my girls were young enough to want a bedtime story
each night. I remember thinking that whatever disagreement and stress had occurred that day, I could make the last moments count. I could end on a note of calm and act like the patient mom I hadn’t quite managed to be just hours before.
Don’t mistake all moments as equal insignificance. There’s a reason why yoga classes end with savasana (挺卧式). There’s a reason we eat dessert last. Do organize endings carefully. As Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll might say: Finish strong. Last impressions are especially lasting.
24. What can the author suggest doing to make the end of a school year memorable
A. Planning a special event for the last day
B. Reflecting on the entire academic year
C. Ignoring school regulations
D. Focusing on the final exam
25. Which statement is true about the peak-end rule
A. The last moments matter the most in our memories
B. Peaks in life can be remembered better than endings
C. The peaks and ends of experiences are easier to remember.
D. Our judgment of the past is determined by first impressions.
26. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. What struggles the author had in life.
B. How the author treated her daughters.
C. Why the author read stories to her kids.
D. How the author applied the rule to daily life.
27. Why is Pete Carroll mentioned in the last paragraph
A. To show the importance of doing sports.
B. To explain why last impressions are lasting.
C. To prove the peak-end rule can be used in sports
D. To encourage readers to value the last moments of an experience.

The California sea otter (海獭), once hunted to the edge of extinction, has staged a thrilling comeback in the last century. Now, scientists have discovered that the otters’ success story has led to something just as remarkable: the restoration of their declining coastal marsh (沼泽) habitat.
Elkhorn Slough, a coastal marsh within Monterey Bay, had been experiencing severe damage. The root cause was a growing population of shore crabs, which fed heavily on the marsh plants, weakening the structural integrity of the habitat. Coastal marshes like these are not only natural defenses against storm waves but also serve as important carbon storage areas and water-cleaning systems.
The conservation-driven comeback of the sea otter has been crucial. California’s coastlines were once alive with sea otters. Sadly, they were nearly wiped out at the hands of fur traders. In the 1980s, conservation efforts aided these otters in re-occupying large areas of their former range. Now, Elkhorn Slough has the highest concentration of sea otters in California, with a population of about 100. By naturally feasting on crabs, the otters
have helped a significant regrowth of plant life. Brent Hughes, a scientist working alongside Angelini, led a three-year study. Their findings were clear: in areas with sea otters, crab numbers fell markedly. This led to a resurgence in plant growth, which in turn stabilized the soil and lowered the rate of soil washing away.
As the sea otter population continues to restore, their positive impact on coastal ecosystems is likely to increase. It not only showcases the sea otter as a central species—a species that has a significant effect on its natural environment—but also highlights the essential nature of top predators (捕食者) in preserving ecological harmony. “My honest reaction was—this could become a classic in the literature,” says scientist Lekelia Jenkins. She reveals marsh restoration also helps people by reducing flooding. “Suddenly, sea otters go from just cute things we like to something that can protect our livelihoods and our properties.”
28. What change did the disappearance of sea otters bring about
A. Fewer predatory crabs. B. More coastal plant life.
C. Better water-cleaning effect. D. Worse coastal ecological balance.
29. What does the underlined word “resurgence” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Barrier. B. Advancement. C. Expansion. D. Revival.
30. What is the author’s purpose in quoting Lekelia Jenkins
A. To highlight the importance of coastal marshes.
B. To introduce a new research study on sea otters.
C. To demonstrate the practical benefits of sea otters.
D. To emphasize the need for increased conservation efforts.
31. What message is conveyed from sea otters’ impact
A. The necessity for controlled hunting.
B. The interconnectedness of the ecosystem.
C. The drawbacks of wildlife reintroduction.
D. The need for human intervention in nature.
D
Animals have developed a circadian clock—an internal body clock that runs in 24-hour cycles. It is regulated by cues (提示) from their environment. But they may suffer from a “jet lag (时差反应)” when the cues animals are exposed to do not match the ones of their natural environment.
Kristine Gandia, a PhD student at the University of Stirling in Scotland, and a team of observers set out to understand how the “jet lag” of living in latitudes (纬度) that animals were not used to can affect them. Giant pandas were chosen as the focus for the study partly because they live highly seasonal lives.”
“Giant pandas are very good animals to focus on,” Gandia said. “They are very popular in zoos and there are a lot that have cameras so we can see how their behavior changes across different latitudes. These cameras enabled us to monitor the giant pandas’ behavior across a 24-hour period.”
Gandia explained that the latitudinal range for giant pandas is between 26 and 42 degrees north. Matching latitudes could also be considered between 26 and 42 degrees south, as these mirror the temperature and lighting conditions.
The team monitored 11 giant pandas in six different zoos. Some zoos were within the animals’ natural
latitudes but in other countries and the others were outside that range.
Gandia explained, “We recorded giant panda behavior, trying to account for behaviors that are positive, neutral (中性的) and negative indicators for welfare. So, this would include behaviors like play and grooming as positive behaviors, drinking and defecating as neutral maintenance behaviors, and several abnormal behaviors as negative behaviors, with pacing being the most common.”
Those living in zoos outside of their home latitude were found to be less active and display more negative behaviors.
“Giant pandas living in zoos could be suffering from a ‘jet lag’ if their body clocks don’t match their environments,” Gandia said.
32. What does Gandia and her team’s study focus on
A. Animal behavior. B. Animal body clock.
C. Animal popularity. D. Animal distribution.
33. What is a reason why pandas were chosen for the study
A. Wide latitude of their natural habitat. B. Their strong adaptability.
C. The existing findings about them. D. The convenience of observation.
34. How was the study carried out
A. By analyzing reasons. B. By comparing recordings.
C. By conducting interviews. D. By listing examples.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Will “Jet Lag” Be Able to Be Avoided
B. Could Animals Suffer from a “Jet Lag”
C. Is Panda a Proper Subject to Study “Jet Lag”
D. Does Season Have Anything to Do with “Jet Lag”

Hop on the Silent Walking Trend
Silent walking involves walking outdoors without distractions like music or conversations, focusing on the mind-body-nature connection. 36 That’s a slower, lower-impact way to relax and is great for fitness. Here’s everything you need to know about the trend.
Select a natural setting and fully engage your senses. For reaping the mental health benefits, it is recommended to find a quiet and peaceful natural location. 37 Meanwhile, consciously observing the sights, sounds, smells, and physical sensations during the walk can significantly impact cognitive and emotional well-being.
To stimulate the mind, consider exploring different routes than usual. Without your favourite podcast or playlist, you might slip into boredom on your walk. 38 And it might even be good for your brain. Scientists applaud the virtues of boredom for brain health, believing that it boosts creativity and improves social connections. And if you do get bored, rest assured that it shows you’ve disconnected from external distractions. Go with it, and make sure you take a different route each time—it’ll keep you motivated.
Start off with five-minute silent walks and eventually build up to thirty minutes. If you’re usually a headphone wearer, it will feel super weird to walk without your go-to tunes, but give yourself a second to adjust. Chances are, once you’re a few minutes into your silent walk, you’ll feel the magic kick in. 39
Regular reflection and ongoing documentation are essential. After completing a silent walk, take time to reflect upon any emerging thoughts, feelings, or insights. 40 Journaling about the experience can also solidify connections between thoughts and ideas, providing a valuable tool for self-reflection and growth.
A. But being bored won’t hurt you.
B. Taking different paths can lead to exciting discoveries.
C. Adjusting the routine gradually can help ease into the experience.
D. You’ll also start noticing the little things around you more clearly.
E. They can deepen understanding and serve as a record of personal growth
F. Unlike exercise-oriented walking, it isn’t about reaching certain speed or steps
G. In such an environment, you can immerse yourself in the natural soundscape (音景) .

The little country schoolhouse was heated by an old fashioned, pot-bellied stove. A little boy had the job of coming to school early each day to start the fire and warm the room before his teacher and his classmates arrived.
One morning, they arrived to find the schoolhouse engulfed (吞没) in flames. They dragged the unconscious
little boy out of the flaming building more dead than alive. He had major burns over the lower half of his body and was taken to the nearby county hospital.
From his bed the dreadfully burned, semi-conscious little boy faintly heard the doctor talking to his mother. The doctor told his mother that her son would surely die—which was for the best, really—for the terrible fire had devastated (破坏) the lower half of his body.
But the brave boy didn’t want to die. He made up his mind that he would survive. Somehow, to the amazement of the physician, he did survive. When the mortal (致死的) danger was past, he again heard the doctor and his mother speaking quietly. The mother was told that since the fire had destroyed so much flesh in the lower part of his body, it would almost be better if he had died, since he was doomed to be a life-time cripple (瘸子) with no use at all of his lower limbs.
Once more the brave boy made up his mind. He would not be a cripple. He would walk. But unfortunately from the waist down, he had no motor (引起运动的) ability. His thin legs just dangled there, all but lifeless.
Ultimately he was released from the hospital. Every day his mother would massage (对……按摩) his little legs, but there was no feeling, no control, nothing. Yet his determination that he would walk was as strong as ever. When he wasn’t in bed, he was confined (限制) to a wheelchair.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
One sunny day his mother wheeled him out into the yard to get some fresh air.

B
I took advantage of the peak-end rule years ago, when my girls were young enough to want a bedtime story each night.
A 25. C 26. D 27. D
根据第三段中的“If the school year hasn’t yet ended for you, consider what you can do to make the finale count. Why Because when it comes to human memory, not all moments are created equal. Instead, our remembered experiences are disproportionately (不成比例地) influenced by peaks (the best moments as well as the worst) and endings (the last moments).(如果你的学年还没有结束,考虑一下你能做些什么来让结尾有意义。为什么?因为当涉及到人类记忆时,并不是所有的时刻都是平等的。相反,我们记忆中的经历不成比例地受到高峰(最好的时刻和最坏的时刻)和结局(最后的时刻)的影响。)”可知,人类对一段经历的高峰(最好的时刻和最坏的时刻)和结尾记忆最深,所以作者建议提前考虑学年的结尾方式,从而让它变得有意义。由此可推测出,作者建议为学年最后一天策划一个特殊的活动。故选A。
根据第三段中的“Nobel Prize winner Danny Kahneman, who discovered this phenomenon, called this the peak-end rule. It suggests that our judgment of a past experience is largely based on its most extreme point and its endpoint.(诺贝尔奖获得者丹尼 卡尼曼发现了这一现象,称之为“峰终定律”。这表明,我们对过去经历的判断很大程度上是基于其最极端的点和终点。)”可知,峰终定律表明,我们对过去经历的判断很大程度上是基于其最极端的点和终点,由此可推断出,一段经历的巅峰和结尾是最容易被记住的。故选C。
26. 主旨大意题。根据第四段“I took advantage of the peak-end rule years ago, when my girls were young enough to want a bedtime story each night. I remember thinking that whatever disagreement and stress had occurred that day, I could make the last moments count. I could end on a note of calm and act like the patient mom I hadn’t quite managed to be just hours before.(几年前,当我的女儿们还很小,每天晚上都想讲一个睡前故事时,我就利用了这条峰终定律。我记得当时我在想,无论那天发生了什么分歧和压力,我
都能让最后的时刻有意义。我可以平静地结束,表现得像一个几个小时前我还没能做到的耐心妈妈。)”可知,本段主要讲述了作者在生活中运用峰终定律,为女儿们读睡前故事,当一个耐心的妈妈,让每一天的最后时刻变得有意义。故选D。
27. 推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Do organize endings carefully. As Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll might say: Finish strong. Last impressions are especially lasting.(一定要仔细安排结局。正如西雅图海鹰队教练皮特 卡罗尔可能会说的那样:强势完成比赛。最后的印象尤其持久。)”可知,作者在最后建议读者要仔细安排结尾,并引用皮特 卡罗尔的话“强势完成比赛”来说明最后的印象会非常持久,强调结尾的重要性,由此可推测出,作者提到皮特 卡罗尔是为了鼓励读者重视一段经历的最后时刻。故选D。
C
By naturally feasting on crabs, the otters have helped a significant regrowth of plant life.
D 29. D 30. C 31. B
根据第二段中“Elkhorn Slough, a coastal marsh within Monterey Bay, had been experiencing severe damage. The root cause was a growing population of shore crabs, which fed heavily on the marsh plants, weakening the structural integrity of the habitat.(埃尔克霍恩沼泽是蒙特利湾的一个沿海沼泽,已经遭受了严重的破坏。根本原因是岸边蟹的数量不断增加,它们以沼泽植物为食,削弱了栖息地的结构完整性。)”可知,海獭的消失导致了沿海生态平衡的恶化。故选D项。
29. 词句猜测题。划线词句前文“By naturally feasting on crabs, the otters have helped a significant regrowth of plant life.(通过以螃蟹为食,水獭帮助了植物的再生。)”说明水獭通过以螃蟹为食,可以帮助植物的再生,从而推知划线词句“Their findings were clear: in areas with sea otters, crab numbers fell markedly. This led to a resurgence in plant growth, which in turn stabilized the soil and lowered the rate of soil washing away.(他们的发现很明确:在有海獭的地区,螃蟹的数量明显下降。这导致了植物生长的resurgence,反过来又稳定了土壤,降低了土壤被冲走的速度。)”其中划线词应为“复苏”的意思,与D项同义。故选D项。
30. 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“‘My honest reaction was — this could become a classic in the literature,’ says scientist Lekelia Jenkins. She reveals marsh restoration also helps people by reducing flooding. ‘Suddenly, sea otters go from just cute things we like to something that can protect our livelihoods and our properties.’(科学家Lekelia Jenkins 说:‘我的真实反应是,这可能会成为文学经典。’她透露,沼泽恢复也通过减少洪水来帮助人们。‘突然之间,海獭从我们喜欢的可爱动物变成了可以保护我们生计和财产的动物。’)”可知,作者引用Lekelia Jenkins的话是为了展示海獭对人类的实际益处,如减少洪水灾害等。故选C项。
31. 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“As the sea otter population continues to restore, their positive impact on coastal ecosystems is likely to increase. It not only showcases the sea otter as a central species—a species that has a significant effect on its natural environment — but also highlights the essential nature of top predators (捕食者) in preserving ecological harmony.(随着海獭数量的持续恢复,它们对沿海生态系统的积极影响可能会增加。它不仅展示了海獭作为一个关键物种——一个对自然环境有重大影响的物种——而且突出了顶级捕食者在维护生态和谐方面的本质)”可知,文章通过展示海獭对沿海生态系统的积极影响,传达了生态系统之间相互联系的信息。故选B项。
D
Animals have developed a circadian clock—an internal body clock that runs in 24-hour cycles. It is regulated by cues (提示) from their environment. But they may suffer from a “jet lag (时差反应)” when the cues animals
are exposed to do not match the ones of their natural environment.
Some zoos were within the animals’ natural latitudes but in other countries and the others were outside that range.
B 33. D 34. B 35. B
Animals have developed a circadian clock—an internal body clock that runs in
24-hour cycles. It is regulated by cues from their environment. But they may suffer from a “jet lag” when the cues animals are exposed to do not match the ones of their natural environment.(动物已经形成了生物钟——一种以24小时为周期运行的体内生物钟。 和第二段的句子“Kristine Gandia, a PhD student at the University of Stirling in Scotland, and a team of observers set out to understand how the “jet lag” of living in latitudes that animals were not used to can affect them.(苏格兰斯特林大学的博士生克里斯汀 甘迪亚和一组观察人员开始了解生活在动物不习惯的纬度上的“时差”是如何影响它们的。)”
根据第三段““Giant pandas are very good animals to focus on,” Gandia said. “They are very popular in zoos and there are a lot that have cameras so we can see how their behavior changes across different latitudes. These cameras enabled us to monitor the giant pandas’ behavior across a 24-hour period.”(“大熊猫是非常值得关注的动物,”甘迪亚说。“它们在动物园里很受欢迎,很多动物园都有摄像头,所以我们可以看到它们在不同纬度的行为是如何变化的。这些摄像机使我们能够在24小时内监控大熊猫的行为。”)”可知,选择熊猫作为研究对象是因为方便观察。故选D项。
34. 细节理解题。根据第六段“Gandia explained, “We recorded giant panda behavior, trying to account for behaviors that are positive, neutral and negative indicators for welfare. So, this would include behaviors like play and grooming as positive behaviors, drinking and defecating as neutral maintenance behaviors, and several abnormal behaviors as negative behaviors, with pacing being the most common.”(甘迪亚解释说:“我们记录了大熊猫的行为,试图解释积极、中性和消极的行为指标。因此,这将包括玩耍和梳理等行为作为积极行为,喝水和排便作为中性维持行为,以及一些异常行为作为消极行为,其中踱步是最常见的。”)”可知,研究人员是通过对比大熊猫的录像进行研究的。故选B项。
35. 主旨大意题。通读全文可知,本文主要介绍如果大熊猫的生物钟与环境不匹配,它们可能会受到“时差反应”的影响。所以B项“Could Animals Suffer from a “Jet Lag” ”(动物会有“时差反应”吗?)
Go
with it, and make sure you take a different route each time—it’ll keep you motivated.
F 37. G 38. A 39. C 40. E
36. 上文“Silent walking involves walking outdoors without distractions like music or conversations, focusing on the mind-body-nature connection.(静默行走包括在户外行走,不受音乐或对话等干扰,专注于身心自然的联系)”以及下文“That’s a slower, lower-impact way to relax and is great for fitness. Here’s everything you need to know about the trend.(这是一种较慢、影响较小的放松方式,非常适合健身。以下是您需要了解的有关趋势的所有信息)”说明静默行走是一种适合健身的运动方式。空处补充上文内容,并引出下文。F项中的it指代前文中的Silent walking,“reaching certain speed or steps”和下文中的“That’s a slower, lower-impact way”相呼应,说明静默行走不关注到特定的速度或步数,而是以一种较慢、影响较小的放松方式行走。
37. 上文“Select a natural setting and fully engage your senses. For reaping the mental health benefits, it is recommended to find a quiet and peaceful natural location. (选择一个自然的环境,充分利用你的感官。为了获得心理健康的好处,建议找一个安静、宁静的自然地点)”说明静默行走需要选择找一个安静、宁静的自然地点。空处与前文内容形成因果逻辑关系,G项中的“In such an environment”和前文中的“a quiet and peaceful natural location”相呼应,说明在这样安静和自然的环境下,你就可以沉浸在自然的音景中。故选G。
38. 上文“To stimulate the mind, consider exploring different routes than usual. Without your favourite podcast or playlist, you might slip into boredom on your walk. (为了刺激大脑,可以考虑探索与平时不同的路线。如果没有你最喜欢的播客或播放列表,你可能会在散步时陷入无聊)”说明如果平时喜欢博客等,在静默散步时就会感到无聊。空处和前文形成转折关系,所以提出的“无聊的积极影响”提供铺垫。A项中的But引出了与上文相对的观点,表明尽管无聊可能被视为不愉快的体验,但它并非有害,这为下文科学家对无聊的积极评价提供了逻辑上的衔接。A项“But being bored won’t hurt you.” 故选A。
39. 上文“If you’re usually a headphone wearer, it will feel super weird to walk without your go-to tunes, but
give yourself a second to adjust. Chances are, once you’re a few minutes into your silent walk, you’ll feel the magic kick in.(如果你通常是一个戴耳机的人,在没有音乐的情况下走路会感觉非常奇怪,但给自己一秒钟的时间来调整。
40. 上文“After completing a silent walk, take time to reflect upon any emerging thoughts, feelings, or insights.

Last year, my younger brother Darrin tore the old engine out of his Dodge Challenger. Then he 41 it piece by piece, and put it back together again all by himself. He was 16. All he 42 was a Chilton’s shop manual (使用手册) for the car, his own curiosity, and a strong desire to 43 how things worked.
Later, I asked him about this 44 and how he made it. His answer was 45 — he just did it. He wanted a new car and couldn’t afford to buy another one, so this was really his only 46 . He had nothing to lose and was highly 47 to make the engine work. He 48 with it, paid close attention to how he took it apart, made a lot of mistakes, and reached points where he wasn’t 49 what to do next. When that happened, he asked a friend or a friend’s dad for 50 , tried this and tried that, until he finished the work. To me it was a (n) 51 achievement.
Our 52 to do hard things increases when we try doing those hard things. It is 53 limited by our own will and imagination. We learn by trying, by making mistakes, and by 54 help from those who know more sometimes just a little more-than we do.
Never 55 trying new things. The more one does, the more one can do.

The little country schoolhouse was heated by an old fashioned, pot-bellied stove. A little boy had the job of
coming to school early each day to start the fire and warm the room before his teacher and his classmates arrived.
One morning, they arrived to find the schoolhouse engulfed (吞没) in flames. They dragged the unconscious little boy out of the flaming building more dead than alive.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One sunny day his mother wheeled him out into the yard to get some fresh air. As she pushed the chair along the yard, there was a group of kids about his age chasing each other around. On seeing such a cheerful scene, the boy looked at his legs, willing them to move and carry him like before. He stuggled to his feet, feeling a sharp pain in his legs. “I didn’t lose them, mom!” the little boy looked at his mother and said excitedly. Hope sparked within him. Over the next few weeks, he asked his mother to take him outside every
day, to practice inch by inch, step by step.
Ultimately through his strong determination, he did develop the ability to stand up. Slow and frustrating as His progress was, he refused to yield to despair. Every small movement was a victory, every challenge was an overcome. With his mother’s massage and his perseverance, the faint stand grew into steady strength. It was the unmerciful fire that destroyed his body. However, it is his determination and his mother’s support that change his destiny.
