Richard Feynman was arguably the second best known physicist after Einstein. But she is not the only distinguished scientist in the Feynman family.
Born in 1927, Joan Feynman grew up in Queens, New York, alongside her older brother Richard. He would become Joan’s first teacher and someone who helped develop her curious nature, believing her capable of learning all the math and science he could teach her. She would try to solve math problems for the unique reward of getting to pull her brother’s hair and serving as his “lab assistant” at the age of five. For her fourteenth birthday, Richard gave Feynman a copy of Astronomy by Rebecca Horace Baker, a college-level physics text, which both taught her about physics and what was possible. Feynman credited it for proving to her that women could indeed have a career doing science.
Feynman would go on to receive a bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College, before she attended Syracuse University, studying condensed matter theory and earning a PhD in 1958. By 1960, Feynman was married with two children and she decided to take a break from physics to take on the role of homemaker.
The break was short-lived, as Feynman grew depressed from keeping a home and caring for two small children. In 1962, at the advice of a psychologist, she went in search of employment, securing three job offers at
multiple institutes. At Lamont, where she worked part-time, Feynman began her research into Earth’s magnetosphere, identifying its shape.
Over the course of her career, Feynman made many breakthroughs in furthering the understanding of solar wind and its interaction with the Earth’s magnetosphere. As author or co-author of more than 185 papers, Feynman’s research accomplishments range from discovering the shape of the Earth’s magnetosphere to identifying the origin of auroras. In 1974, she would become the first woman ever elected as an officer of the American Geophysical Union, and in 2000 she was awarded NASA’s Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal.
“Joan Feynman leaves a wealth of scientific accomplishments, having made important contributions,” said APS CEO Kate Kirby. “Despite being discouraged to pursue science by social expectations, she persevered, and her accomplishments serve as an inspiration to women who wish to pursue a career in science.”
24. How did Richard influence Joan
A. By preparing her for subjects in college.
B. By introducing her to the world of science.
C. By teaching her the importance of astronomy.
D. By offering her a job serving as his lab assistant.
25. What can be inferred from the passage
A. All women scientists have benefited from Joan’s inspiration.
B. In Joan’s time women were encouraged to become scientists.
C. Pursuing scientific goals contributed to Joan’s psychological well-being.
D. As her first teacher, Richard designed Joan’s career path as an astronomer.
26. Which best describes Joan Feynman as a scientist
A. Successful and wealthy.
B. Optimistic and hardworking.
C. Popular and ambitious.
D. Productive and acknowledged.
27. What is the best title for the passage
A. Joan Feynman: Survivor of Depression

Recycled, reused and renewable textiles (纺织品) only go so far in solving the fast-fashion crisis, writes Alexandra Carlton. The answer may lie in consumption.
Australia is the world’s second-largest consumer of clothing, generating 800,000 tonnes of textile waste yearly. Individuals consume about 27 kilograms of new clothes annually and cast 23 kilograms of waste. Globally, the situation is even more severe, with an estimated 92million tonnes of clothing waste produced each year. This equates to a truckload of clothes entering landfills every second.
If you want to stop our unwanted clothes from jamming the planet, you’d assume that reusing and recycling
would lead the discussion. However, full clothes recycling — breaking clothes down to their base fibres to create new ones — is no simple task. Clothes consist of various fibres, fasteners, and decorations that traditionally require painstaking manual (手工的) separation. Yet, innovation is underway, such as the Swedish large-scale sorting facility Siptex, where textiles can be sorted by color and material using infrared (红外线) technology.
Brands like Adelaide’s Autark focus on minimizing output. “I keep my collections tightly designed and production numbers slim,” says designer Sophia McMahon. Sometimes this means she doesn’t have the exact clothes someone wants in store, but customers are patient while she makes items to order because they understand her brand’s essence.
Startups like AirRobe are giving clothes a second life and could be part of the solution. The clothing resale market is currently worth 49 billion and is expected to reach 103 billion by 2025. AirRobe lets customers add new purchases to their digital wardrobe so they can be resold later without uploading photos or descriptions. “The ‘re-economy’ — the reuse and recycle market sector — will be a real opportunity for us,” says Erica Berchtold, CEO of The Iconic.
Researchers Samantha Sharpe and Taylor Brydges from the University of Technology Sydney advocate a widespread shift among consumers towards buying fewer, higher-quality clothes besides these innovations.
28. Why are the numbers used in Paragraph 2
A. To encourage factories to produce more clothes.
B. To emphasize the severity of the clothing waste.
C. To present the amount of clothing consumption.
D. To set the stage for discussing how to landfill clothes.
29. What does the author think of full clothes recycling
A. It is challenging. B. It is energy-saving.
C. It is unworthy of attention. D. It is time-efficient.
30. What does Sophia McMahon mean in Paragraph 4
A. Consumers should be patient to buy high-quality clothes.
B. Clothes specially designed for consumers are the most fit.
C. Adelaide’s Autark has enough clothes in store for consumers.
D. Slowing the production cycle is essential to reducing output.
31. What do the researchers suggest doing regarding consumer habits
A. Buying more clothes.
B. Following the fashion trend.
C. Changing consuming behavior.
D. Concentrating innovation.

In 1986, King Charles suggested talking to plants, a thought initially mocked but now supported by evidence that plants can detect, react to, and potentially produce sound.
Since plants have been evolving alongside the insects for hundreds of millions of years, Heidi Appel, a botanist and Reginald Cocroft, an entomologist wondered if plants might be sensitive to the sounds made by insects.
The researchers recorded the vibrations (声音震动) from caterpillars (毛虫) as they chewed on leaves. Then the plants were exposed to the recorded vibrations while no caterpillars were actually present. The results were striking. Leaves that had been exposed had significantly higher levels of defensive chemicals, making them much harder for the caterpillars to eat. The research may have practical consequences, such as using drones armed with speakers to warn crops of pest threats, offering an eco-friendly alternative to chemical pesticides.
Further studies by ecologist Monica Gagliano reveal that plants, like pea plants, can “hear” water through sound, with roots responding to water-related vibrations even when the water is inaccessible. This finding could have implications for preventing damage to sewer (下水道) systems caused by plant roots. The assumption had been that it was leaks that attracted the roots. The solution, she says, might be to invest in pipes that are silent as water runs through them.
Additionally, the study by the team at Tel Aviv University revealed that plants under stress, due to factors like insufficient water or physical damage, make high-frequency sounds, which can be detected even in noisy environments. This opens possibilities for using microphones to monitor plant health in agriculture, potentially aiding farmers in identifying and addressing crop issues.
Despite some questions remaining to be solved, these fascinating discoveries cast new light on plants’ ability to perceive and respond to sounds in their environment. Plants live in a world full of sounds due to human civilization, and it is worth investigating this interesting aspect. Perhaps researchers might even seek funding from King Charles.
32. What was the original reaction to King Charles’s suggestion
A. Ambiguous. B. Favourable.
C. Indifferent. D. Opposed.
33. What practical result may the research by Heidi and Reginald lead to
A. Introducing drones with speakers to farmers.
B. Applying chemicals to enhance plant growth.
C. Stimulating plants to release anti-pest chemicals.
D. Developing new types of protective pesticides.
34. Why is employing silent pipes suggested
A. To reduce noise pollution.
B. To protect sewer systems.
C. To improve water transportation.
D. To attract plant roots to accessible water.
35. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage
P: paragraph
A. B.
C. D.

If you search the internet these days, you’ll likely run across some strange-looking, yet cheerful cartoon characters. These computer-generated people have small heads and exaggerated bodies. 36 The happy figures are often moving or doing something creative.
In 2017 Facebook paid a design team to develop a positive illustration system. 37 She worked to show human connection, motion, energy and joy in her drawings. She wanted to portray that sense of joy people feel when they’re sharing things together. The name which was given to the new art form when it was completed was very appropriate. They named it Alegria, which means joy in Spanish.
Why did Alegria art become popular so quickly There are many reasons. As websites depended on illustrations to fill space, Alegria-type art became increasingly useful. 38 By comparison, more detailed art designs require extra time, skill and money to produce. Businesses also love the fact that Alegria’s characters celebrate diversity by featuring international cultural events. The illustrations convey good feelings. Those feelings help people believe they can trust the companies that feature them on their pages.
39 These people think companies like Facebook have simply prepared over their problems with positive images. They’ve failed to address their real problems or make lasting changes.
For many, however, Alegria is a nice visual language that represents happiness. From children hugging to couples dancing, the images are all about positive energy. 40
A. The style is flat, simple and easy to create.
B. For some consumers, though, that’s a problem.
C. One of the designers took that message to heart.
D. For the netizens, Alegria helps build trust on the big companies.
E. No wonder Alegria is now the most popular style of illustrations for books.
F. All in all, it seems that Alegria is the perfect name for this playful, fun art style.
G. They’re created in bold colors with arms and legs that resemble giant wet noodles.

Jiangsu, known for its unique blend of innovation and preservation, is a true treasure. I was 56 (incredible) fortunate to journey through the cities of Suzhou and Nanjing, both of which left me fascinated with their true impressiveness and eagerly 57 (long) to explore further.
My first stop was Suzhou. 58 (engage) myself in the local industrial atmosphere, I chose a hotel in the “industrial park”, 59 the coexistence of advanced manufacturing and natural beauty was most evident, as it was situated on the edge of a scenic lake, embraced by a vibrant landscape. As I adventured into the heart of the city, the Old Town’s ancient waterways led me on an 60 (explore) of history, and the classical gardens

When I was a kid, my parents and I lived near the forest. They often told me that our family was a team that needed to work together for the household to function smoothly. There was always an abundance of work to do — cooking, cleaning, and walking dogs. I volunteered to walk our dog, Max, who had been adopted one month before. I never dared let this giant dog off the lead (牵狗绳), just in case he took off.
One morning, we were walking along in the forest when Max started pulling on the lead. At first, I was able to hold on despite the wet ground from a recent shower. But the more I tried to stop him pulling, the more it turned into a tug of war. And thanks to the slippery ground, I lost.
Pulling his lead, Max shot off like a bullet, leaving me screaming behind. I chased him but lost my footing and fell face-first into some mud. I stumbled (踉跄) to my feet, but looking ahead, I found him running back towards me. I thought he was going to stop and give me his “Sorry” look. But instead, the dog shot past me and returned after a while.
As soon as we got home, my mother immediately attended to Max with a warm towel and a doggy treat. I thought seeing me stumbling and covered in mud, I would also get a warm cup of tea and a motherly kiss. Instead, I
got a very loud lecture about letting the dog loose in the forest.
I felt frustrated. It wasn’t fair that she didn’t understand how difficult it was to control Max. I fought back, “Stop lecturing me! Why is everything my fault ” With these words, I stormed into my bedroom and slammed the door shut.
In the evening, I heard my mother call Max and take him out. It wasn’t long before I heard my mother screaming and the door opening again.

M: Wow! Did you go climbing
W: Well, we went to the bottom of the mountain and spent four hours going to the forest, but then I just felt too tired, so I had to stand at the bottom and watched the others.
M: So what else did you do
W: I spent a lot of time on the beach. I tried diving. It was great! Oh, and I saw a dolphin when I was underwater.
M: Wow! Did you go bungee jumping
W: I wanted to, but I realized I was scared of heights, so I just gave up. Quite by chance, the engine on the boat was broken, so they had to call the sailing trip off.
M: That’s a shame. So what was the most exciting part of the trip
W: Probably exploring the old caves. I’d never done it before, and thought it was great.

【解析】
【原文】M: Hello, everybody. I’m Reid. Today I will discuss the effect of sleep on school students. Many teenagers are getting little sleep and there are concerns that this could have a serious long-term effect on their body health and spirits, but we aren’t sure about that now. However, one study has clearly shown that high school students getting low grades also get on average one hour less sleep than students getting high grades. Then why aren’t teenagers getting enough sleep I think they spend too much time on TV and computer games. So how can teenagers fall asleep easier Well, don’t have any soft drinks or any drink that contain chocolate before sleeping. Reading a book or listening to a story, rather than music, should help your
brain relax.
It would be better for schools to stay open longer so that pupils can do homework before they get home. Another thing that some schools have tried successfully is to begin the school day half an hour later and end the school day half an hour later, and I really recommend that.

In 1962, at the advice of a psychologist, she went in search of employment, securing three job offers at multiple institutes.
“Joan Feynman leaves a wealth of scientific accomplishments, having made important contributions,” said
APS CEO Kate Kirby.

If you want to stop our unwanted clothes from jamming the planet, you’d assume that reusing and recycling would lead the discussion.
【答案】28. B 29. A 30. D 31. C

This opens possibilities for using microphones to monitor plant health in agriculture, potentially
aiding farmers in identifying and addressing crop issues.
A. B.
C. D.
【答案】32. D 33. C 34. B 35. C

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Instead, I got a very loud lecture about letting the dog loose in the forest.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】范文
I walked out of my room. Not surprisingly, they were both covered in mud. It was evident that Max had led my mother on another wild chase through the forest. My frustration melted away as I saw my mother’s apologetic expression. “Sweetheart,” my mom said softly, “I’m sorry for scolding you earlier.” After a quick shower, she then shared her own adventure with Max and how he also managed to escape from her grasp, when I served her a warm cup of tea. It seemed we were both at our wits’ end with this dog.
Dad stepped in, suggesting that we work together to train Max. We spent the next few days teaching Max basic commands like “sit”, “stay”, and “come back”. It wasn’t easy, but gradually, Max started responding better to us. The instant we tried to stop him pulling, he sat down with eyes looking intently at us. In the process, not only did Max become more obedient, but our family also grew closer. We realized that every member of our team played an important role, and we needed to support each other to ensure everything ran smoothly.
