Even if we have time, not many of us take the effort to collect and record the recipes from our grandmothers and parents. We often get a recipe on the phone and take it down quickly on a piece of paper. We just stick it onto the fridge for a week or two and forget about it as soon as the paper disappears from there.

Cait, 11, was trying to fall asleep when her 8-year-old brother, Doug, came into her room. He looked around, but seemed really out of it.Then Doug went back into the hallway and stood there looking straight up at the light. This was really strange. Cait didn't know what to do. Facial recognition technology(人脸识别技术) is widely used today. For example, police use it to search for had guys. It's also used to unlock phones or doors.
Now, a similar technology, known as facial detection(探测), is entering a new field: the business of advertising(广告).
Such systems are going through tests in a small number of stores. One facial detection system can judge a person's “happiness” or “fear” level. That helps businesses see how people feel as they look at products or adverisements in the store. Amother system can detect whether someone is wearing eyeglasses. If so, stores can send advertisements for new glasses to him.
Facial detection technology is also placed inside some large advertising boards. Cameras in those boards can detect information like people's ages and five levels of feelings-from “very happy” to “very unhappy”.
Supporters of the techmology say it could improve buyers' experience by showing ppoducts they might like or by offering them products at lower prices.
Some are against the idea of using such systems. Pam Dixon, the head of a privacy(隐私) group, is one of them. She thinks the strange actions may cause something unfair. For example, a business could raise the price of a product according to a person's age and feelings.

Canada and cold are the same meaning in many people's minds. Many people believe that Canada is a cold and poor wasteland.
Nothing could be further from the truth. For the most part, this huge land is known for its warm weather-not too hot, and not too cold. In most ways, Canadian weather is similar to that of other nations in the northern hemisphere(半球), especially those in northem Europe. But there are a couple of exceptions.
In British Columbia, it rains nearly every day during winter. It snows only one or two days per year. Temperatures rarely fall below 0°C. The Arctic areas are a completely different story. When temperatures drop to-40℃,things get extremely dangerous.
Wind chill would happen when strong winds cause the air to feel colder than the actual temperature-is a common word in the Canadian vocabulary. So is frostbite.
Every Canadian child is taught to know about frostbite, a condition that sets in when skin is under extreme cold for too long. The toes, fingers or face begin to tingle(刺痛) and burn. Living with Canadian winter weather requires common sense and proper winter clothing.
But on a typical winter day, you're more likely to see the sun high and bright. If properly dressed, it's possible to stay comfortable outdoors all day.
Canada is cold in winter. And it's hot in summer. In spring and fall, it's very warm. The record for the coldest day in North America is held by a Canadian Yukon town called Snag. That temperature was -63℃. And two towns in the prairies(草原) hold the record for the warmest day in Canada:+45℃.
Redwood trees are sometimes called “nature's skyscrapers(摩天大楼)" because they are the tallest trees in the world. Many redwoods are over 300 feet tall. Scientists have even found some redwood trees that are over 350 feet tall. That's taller than the Statue of Liberty.
The largest redwood trees grow within 50 miles of the Pacific Ocean. Many of these giant trees can be found along the, coasts of California and Oregon. The climate along the coasts is foggy and rainy. This gives the redwoods a long-term supply of water.
The bark(树皮) of a redwood tree can be up to one foot thick. This thick bark helps protect the tree from insects, disease and even fire. The bark and wood of a redwood tree has tannin(单宁酸) with them, which keeps insects away.
Redwood trees have shallow roots that can reach out 100 feet from the hase of the tree. These roots intertwine(缠绕) with the roots of other redwood trees, helping to keep the trees stable(稳定的) during floods and stong winds. In this way, redwoods truly help support each other!
Redwood trees are the largest living things on Earth. It is difficult to imagine how big redwood trees can be. Want to get a better understanding of the size of these trees Cut a piece of string or rope about 95 feet long. Tie the ends of the string together and spread the string out into a circle. The circle will be about as big around as the base of one of the largest redwood trees. That's a very big tree.

However, one store testing the technology explained they wouldn't store people's information like names or ages. And the advertising board system maker said it didn't keep any personal information or record any videos.
