Trent Kersey says he has known since he was a little kid that he wanted to be a police officer.
On Halloween, his longtime dream came true, about an hour after he and his wife Victoria Kersey welcomed their second child, a baby boy named Theo, at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto, California.
Theo’s arrival, about a week earlier than his expected due date of Nov.6, threw a wrench into Trent Kersey’s original plan — to graduate from San Joaquin Delta College this week and get sworn in (宣誓就职) as a Modest o police officer.
“The day before, we were practicing rehearsals (排练) at the academy for our graduation, and then I came home that afternoon and talked to my wife. And then, next thing you know, we had to go down to the hospital that night, and I had to call the academy staff and my department and let them know I wasn’t going to make it to graduation,” Trent Kersey, 25, told Good Morning America (GMA).
The father of two said it felt “bittersweet” to not be able to share the milestone with his fellow classmates, but at the same time, he was “excited” to meet his son and be there for his family. But what happened next was another big surprise.
“My sergeant (中士) was just checking in on me, making sure things were OK. And then he reached out to me and said, ‘Hey, how would you feel about me, the chief and other higher-ups in the department coming by and swearing you in at the hospital ’” he recalled.
“I said, ‘That’d be awesome. I’d be honored,’” Trent Kersey told GMA.
With the hospital’s approval, the Modesto Police Department brought the ceremonial swearing-in event to Victoria Kersey’s hospital room.
Frank Inacio, one of the Modesto Police Department staffers, said the unusual swearing-in ceremony was an example of how the Modesto Police Department tries to emphasize a “family-first” approach for their community. “Policemen are people too. We’re not just out there doing a job. It proves that we care about families and what’s going on in the community. It shines a positive light on people working in law enforcement (执行),” he said.
4. What do the underlined words “threw a wrench into” probably mean in Paragraph 3
A. Made up. B. Messed up. C. Stuck to. D. Brought forth.
5. How did Trent Kersey feel when knowing that he couldn’t attend the swearing-in ceremony
A. Disappointed. B. Angry. C. Optimistic. D. Complicated.
6. What can we infer from Frank Inacio’s words in the last paragraph
A. This gesture will warm other officers’ hearts.
B. Family should be put in the first place at any time.
C. It is lucky enough for Kersey to swear in at a hospital.
D. He felt surprised to attend this special ceremony.
7. What is the text mainly about
A. A police officer benefited from the policy of “family-first”.
B. A police officer realized his childhood dream.
C. A police officer got sworn in with his newborn son at a hospital.
D. A police officer’s son was born on the day when he was scheduled to be sworn in.

According to a new study, many birds in the Amazon rainforest have become smaller as temperatures have increased. The difference hasn’t been obvious, but it has been significant enough that some scientists have suggested it’s a universal response to climate change.
But new research finds that the body size reductions aren’t happening across the board with some large-brained birds having much less significant changes.
For the study, researchers studied some data on about 70,000 birds that had died when they crashed into buildings in Chicago from 1978 to 2016. They added data on the brain volume and lifespan for 49 of the 52 species of migratory birds (候鸟) in the original study.
They found that birds with very large brains had reductions in overall body size that were about one-third of the reductions noted in birds with smaller brains. They thought that in birds, the species with big brains are the ones that build tools, manage to survive in tough environments, live longer, invest more time and energy into raising babies, and end up surviving better in the wild.
Researchers aren’t certain exactly how warmer temperatures might lead to decreasing body size in birds, but they are considering two possible explanations, which could even be happening at the same time. First, natural selection might be favoring birds that can dissipate heat better. This is because smaller birds have higher surface area to volume ratios (比例), so being small can help birds stay cool. Second, warmer summers might have less food available for birds at the time when they are feeding their babies. In that case, birds might be getting smaller because of decreased food over the years.
The findings don’t suggest that climate change is having zero impact on bigger-brained birds, but researchers believe these findings can inform us of climate change and help set conservation priorities.
8. How does climate change affect some birds according to the text
A. Their lifespan shortens. B. Their body size shrinks.
C. Their brain size expands. D. Their body temperature rises.
9. How did the scientists conduct the study
A. By studying the bird death rate B. By clarifying the bird species.
C. By analyzing historical data. D. By observing 70,000 birds’ migration.
10. Which word can best replace the underlined word “dissipate” in paragraph 5
A. Use. B. Lose. C. Absorb. D. Hold.
11. What can be the best title for the text
A. Climate Changes Sharply B. Temperature Rises Globally
C. Birds’ Body Sizes Vary D. Brain Size Matters for Birds
D
Someday, you may no longer need to brush your teeth by hand. Instead, a group of billions of nanoparticles (纳米粒子) could automatically do all that work for you. It would be especially life-changing for people who find it difficult or impossible to hold and move a toothbrush.
Steager, an engineer at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) in Philadelphia and Hyun Koo, an inventor and dental researcher there, found a way to form the nanoparticles into long, skinny bristles (刷毛), a lot like the ones on a toothbrush. But these bristles shape-shift to fit whatever surface they encounter.
The tooth-cleaning robot works thanks to two magnets (磁铁). One goes each side of the teeth. The nanoparticles sit in a liquid between the magnets. When the magnets are turned off, the nanoparticles move randomly in the liquid. As soon as one magnet gets turned on, the nanoparticles gather together near its center. When the researchers turn on the other magnet and turn off the first one, the nanoparticles extend outward in long, skinny bristles When there’s a tooth in the way, these bristles can’t stretch out as far as they want. So they push against the tooth’s surface. If there’s a gap between teeth, they push into the gap. Moving the magnets makes the bristles move against and between teeth. All that motion cleans the teeth. As a bonus, the nanoparticles also have strong power to kill viruses.
The new device is just a proof of concept The researchers still need to turn it into a product that people will want to use. “There’s a lot of engineering to get from here to there, but every good idea needs to have a start.” says Steager.
12. What is special about the tooth cleaner
A. It’s water-proof. B. It’s transformable.
C. It looks like a toothbrush. D. It contains skinny bristles.
13. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The working principle. B. The magnets motion.
C. The virus-killing process. D. The bristles formation.
14. How does Steager feel about the future of the device
A. Uncertain B. Confident C. Concerned D. Surprised.
15. Which of the following would be the best title
A. A Tooth-Cleaner Fighting Bacteria B. A Breakthrough in Medicine
C. A Shape-Shifting Robotic Tooth-Cleaner D. A New Concept for a New Start

An A for Mrs. Bartlett
I was sitting next to Missy in my ninth-grade world history class when Mrs. Bartlett announced a new project. In groups, we were to create a poster around what we were studying.
On a piece of paper, we wrote the names of three friends we wanted in our group. After collecting all the requests, Mrs. Bartlett informed us that she would take into consideration the names we chose and would let us know the results the next day. I was a well-rounded top student in the class, so I had no doubt I would get the group of my choice. There were only a handful of sociably decent people in the class, and Missy was one of them. I knew we had chosen each other.
The next day, I anxiously awaited the class. After the bell rang, Missy and I stopped talking as Mrs. Bartlett called for our attention. She started to call out names. When she reached group three, Missy’s name was called. So I’m in group three, I thought. The second, third and fourth members of the group were called. My name was not included. There had to be some mistake!
Then I heard it. The last group: “ Mauro, Juliette, Rachel, Karina. ” I could feel the tears well in my eyes. How could I face being in that group — the boy who barely spoke English, the one girl who was always covered by skirts that went down to her ankles, and the other girl who was often wearing very strange and unusual clothes with fancy items. They certainly fell into the category of the least popular in our class. They were considered misfits
There must be something wrong! Mrs. Bartlett was such a person of insight, vision and thoughtfulness that she never forgot to bring out the potential of all her students. Oh, how badly I wanted to be with my friends. Finally I was determined to convince her I should be in the “ good ” group.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

Paragraph 1:
I fought back tears as I walked up to Mrs. Bartlett.

B 5. D 6. A 7. C

根据第三段划线部分上文“Theo’s arrival, about a week earlier than his expected due date of Nov.6(提奥比预计的11月6日到期日提前了大约一周到来)”以及下文“Trent Kersey’s original plan — to graduate from San Joaquin Delta College this week and get sworn in (宣誓就职) as a Modest o police officer(特伦特·科尔西的原计划是——本周从圣华金三角洲学院毕业,并被正式任命为莫德斯托市的警察。)” Made up编造;B. Messed up弄乱;弄糟;C. Stuck to坚持;D.
根据第五段“The father of two said it felt “bittersweet” to not be able to share the milestone with his fellow classmates, but at the same time, he was “excited” to meet his son and be there for his family. But what happened next was another big surprise(这位两个孩子的父亲说,不能和同班同学一起分享这个重要时刻,他感到‘苦乐参半’,但同时,他‘很高兴’能见到儿子,和家人在一起。但接下来发生的事情又是另一个大惊喜。)” 可知,这位父亲觉得,不能和同学们一起分享这一里程碑式的时刻,他感觉“苦乐参半”,但同时,能见到自己的儿子、陪伴家人,他也感到“很高兴”。由此可知,他内心对于不能参加宣誓就职仪式有些许遗憾,但又因为儿子的到来而高兴,因此他的内心是复杂的,故选 D项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Frank Inacio, one of the Modesto Police Department staffers, said the unusual swearing-in ceremony was an example of how the Modesto Police Department tries to emphasize a “family-first” approach for their community. “Policemen are people too. We’re not just out there doing a job. It proves that we care about families and what’s going on in the community.
根据第一段“Trent Kersey says he has known since he was a little kid that he wanted to be a police officer(特伦特·科尔西说,他从小就知道自己想成为一名警察。)”、第三段“Theo’s arrival, about a week earlier than his expected due date of Nov.6(提奥比预计的11月6日到期日提前了大约一周到来)”以及“Trent Kersey’s original plan — to graduate from San Joaquin Delta College this week and get sworn in (宣誓就职) as a Modest o police officer(特伦特·科尔西的原计划是——本周从圣华金三角洲学院毕业,并被正式任命为莫德斯托市的警察。)”、第五段“The father of two said it felt “bittersweet” to not be able to share the milestone with his fellow classmates, but at the same time, he was “excited” to meet his son and be there for his family. But what happened next was another big surprise(这位两个孩子的父亲说,不能和同班同学一起分享这个重要时刻,他感到“苦乐参半”,但同时,他“很高兴”能见到儿子,和家人在一起。但接下来发生的事情又是另一个大惊喜。)”以及最后一段“Frank Inacio, one of the Modesto Police Department staffers, said the unusual swearing-in ceremony was an example of how the Modesto Police Department tries to emphasize a “family-first” approach for their community. “Policemen are people too.
B 9. C 10. B 11.

12 What is special about the tooth cleaner
A. It’s water-proof. B. It’s transformable.
C. It looks like a toothbrush. D. It contains skinny bristles.
13. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The working principle. B. The magnets motion.
C. The virus-killing process. D. The bristles formation.
14. How does Steager feel about the future of the device
A Uncertain B. Confident C. Concerned D. Surprised.

Unique among all the positive emotions, hope requires some degree of conflict, difficulty, negativity, or uncertainty to be ignited. People high in hope are optimistic about their future and believe in possibilities. They see challenges as opportunities to grow and learn, rather than as obstacles. ____16____ Here are tips on how to cultivate hope.
Set and achieve goals. Without a clear goal, it’s easy to get distracted and lose focus. Hopeful people usually visualize their goals and create conditions that set them up for success. ____17____Getting three emails out in the next 15minutes or preparing lunch in the next 20 minutes are simple examples.
Stick with positive people. ____18____ This doesn’t mean being intolerant of another person’s difficulties, negativity, or struggles, but it does mean that hopeful people tend to spend more time associating with those who share a bright and proactive attitude. They maintain a healthy balance but don’t get overwhelmed by the negativity around them.
____19____ While believing in oneself is important, highly hopeful people are able to forgive themselves as well. This is a unique combination because this type of confidence allows a person to be imperfect. In addition, they are willing to take reasonable risks and accept failures to support their growth and move forward.
Keep a positive outlook. No matter what life throws at them, they endeavor to see the silver lining. They don’t let the circumstance define their emotional response. In addition, high-hope people are also creative problem-solvers. When faced with a challenge, they don’t give up easily. ____20____
A. Believe in the power of risks.

Students’ Time Spent on Physical Exercise Weekly
Nowadays, many students are aware of the significance of physical exercise, although the time they spend on it varies.
It can be seen from the survey that the percentage of students who spend 2-3 hours a week, 3-4 hours a week and 4-5 hours a week is respectively 30%, 40% and 18%. However, there are still12% of students who only spend 1-2 hours a week.
The survey shows that a significant number of students are committed to physical exercise. This trend may be due to increased awareness of the importance of physical fitness and promotion of sports activities by the school.
As far as I’m concerned, by continuing to promote and support physical activities within the school environment, we can ensure the overall well-being and health of our students.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1:
I fought back tears as I walked up to Mrs. Bartlett.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Halfway through the week, I felt myself enjoying the company of these three misfits.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph l:
I fought back tears as I walked up to Mrs. Bartlett. Before I opened my mouth, she gently placed a hand on my shoulder, saying with a knowing smile, “ I know what you want, but your group needs you. ” So stunned was I that I couldn’t utter a single word for a moment. She had seen something in me that I hadn’t seen. Suddenly, a mixture of guilt as well as pride seized me. The power of being trusted made me stand straighter. “ I’ll help them. ” I replied in a firm voice. I couldn’t believe it came out of my mouth, but it did.
Paragraph 2:
Halfway through the week, I felt myself enjoying the company of these three misfits. The project was going smoothly with our joint efforts. Besides, I found out Mauro was struggling with English, Juliette wore long skirts because of her religion and Rachel dreamed to be a fashion designer. They weren’t misfits, just people that no one cared enough about to try to understand — except Mrs. Bartlett. I was lucky to be given a chance to see other people in a new light. Mrs. Bartlett gave us an A on that assignment, which should be handed back, for she was the one who truly deserved it.
①一言不发:not utter a single word/say nothing
②帮助:help/aid/assist
③回答:reply/respond/answer
④得到机会:be given a chance/be offered an opportunity

[高分句型2]She had seen something in me that I hadn’t seen.(由关系代词that引导限制性定语从句)
