For three days, the doctor didn't get single patient. Then on the fourth day, a woman opened the door to his office, saw him and ran away.
“I had to run after her, saying I can help her with the problem,” said Diarra Boubacar. The 53-year-old still has a good laugh when he talks about his first day working as a doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) at a private hospital in Chengdu, Sichuan Province.
“If my approach is not effective, I will not take any money from you,” he promised the woman. The woman finally accepted his treatment and felt better.“She started bringing her parents and her husband, and they all became my patients.”
Born in a African country of Mali, Boubacar first came to China in 1984 on a student exchange programme majoring in Chinese language and culture at Beijing Language and Culture University. After the course, he studied TCM at Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine.
Since TCM is also related to Chinese history and culture, students have to study ancient Chinese literature as most of the medical texts were written in ancient Chinese characters.“That's a subject even the Chinese find difficult; so think of me, a foreigner!” he said.
However, the greatest challenge for him was to convince people that even though he was a foreigner, he could still treat them effectively with TCM.
Besides his work in the community, Boubacar is also known as the “African Norman Bethune”.Doctor Bethune was a Canadian frontline doctor who ran mobile hospital in north China in the 1930s.
“I want to build not only a hospital but also an educational centre where people can come and learn about Chinese medicine,” Boubacar said.
He plans to build a hospital with an educational centre where people can learn TCM in Africa.“If they learn TCM, they will be able to treat people in Africa in a very cheap and effective way.”

A
Getting your kid to bed at night is seriously one of the most challenging things you'll ever have to do.Most kids are just so full of energy that they'll tire you out before they're halfway through their store of energy. An easy thing to calm down your child to get into bed is giving in and allowing some tablet screen time. However, it's really not a great idea, just like you thought.
Researchers at the Arizona State University conducted a study with 547 kids between the ages of 7 to 9.Their parents tracked how much screen time the kids were allowed along with their sleep patterns. The study found that kids who did not engage in screen time before bed slept for 23 more minutes every week and also went to sleep about 34 minutes earlier than those playing with tablet.Although that might not seem like so much more time, quality of sleep is vastly important in children's development.
The CDC's (美国疾病控制中心)2018 National Youth Risk Survey outlined that good quality sleep can impact a child's life in many ways, including affecting grades and also weight gain.Students with an “A” average slept for 30 or more minutes per night than those with a “D” or “F” average.
A 2018 Pennsylvania State University study showed that children with irregular bedtimes had a higher risk of having increased body weight. Those with consistent and age-appropriate bedtimes when they were 9 years old had a healthier BMI (体质指数)at age 15 than those with irregular bedtimes.
Hard as it is, it's really important not to give in and hand over a tablet to your child who is about to go to bed.Just like it's important for adults to go to sleep without any distractions, it's even more important for kids.

Sometimes life can seem challenging (挑战的)and we usually get the feeling of “the grass on the other side is always greener”! We usually feel upset with the troubles that life throws at us.
The best thing to do at that point of time is to close our eyes and start counting of all the blessings in life.
If we think deeply, our life is full of blessings that we hardly recognise.Listening to the singing of birds early in the morning, we realise that there are many people who spend their life in a world that is silent while many others spend their lives in a world that is dark and may have never seen a rainbow or the setting sun.
When you go out for a drive, pull down the window and look at the poor beggar standing under the hot sun, begging for filling his hungry stomach. We get three meals a day without realising its importance.Isn't that a blessing
Whenever you are sad, look at the eyes of your parents and family filled with love and concern for you. There are many people who have never experienced the love of a family.Isn't that a blessing
As Mother Teresa once said, “We don't need to do great things. We need to do small things with great love.”
The key to a happy life is when we consider others' problems to be our own and try to help them. When we love people without any expectations and help them, our heart is filled with a sense of happiness and peace seeing the smile on their face.
So the next time whenever life knocks you down, close your eyes and...start counting!

This led to a show — Live from the Priory — which she and her friends first performed in private at NHS mental health institutions before taking it on the road.Since then, Ruby has gained a master's degree in mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (基于正念的认知疗法), written books on the subject and spoken frankly in interviews and blog posts.“We live in a time when so many of us are struggling with pressure,” Ruby reveals. Our feelings of stress can be linked to social media, but Ruby has learned how to balance this.“I only use social media when I need it, but that's something that you need to train your brain to do,” she explains.“It's addictive. But if you practise something like mindfulness or cognitive therapy, there will be a little buzzer (蜂鸣器) in your mind that acts as a warning. Thanks to mindfulness and therapy, I'll know now when my brain is too full and I need to slow down from a kind of rush.”
It is Ruby's own struggles with depression and her willingness to open up that led to her founding Frazzled Cafe.It encourages people to come together to share personal experiences in a secure and anonymous environment.Ruby met thousands of people who wanted to talk and feel connected, and she sensed a need for a place where people could meet for peer-to-peer support to help cope with the great stresses of modern life.“Everyone has a chance to talk about what is going on in their lives. And feeling heard, to me, has always been half the cure,” she finishes.

I used to think the whole purpose of life was pursuing happiness.Everyone said the path to happiness was success, so I searched for that ideal job, that perfect boyfriend, and that beautiful apartment. But instead of ever feeling fulfilled, I felt anxious and lost.Eventually,I decided to go to graduate school for positive psychology to learn what truly makes people happy.
And what's the difference between being happy and having meaning in life Many psychologists describe happiness as a state of comfort and ease, feeling good in the moment.Meaning, though, is deeper. The famous psychologist Martin Seligman says meaning comes from belonging to and serving something beyond yourself and from developing the best within you.Our culture is obsessed with happiness, but I came to see that seeking meaning is the more fulfilling path.
There are four pillars of a meaningful life.
The first pillar is belonging.Belonging comes from being in relationships where you're valued for who you are and where you value others as well. For many people, belonging is the most essential source of meaning.
For others, the key to meaning is the second pillar: purpose.Finding your purpose is not the same thing as finding that job that makes you happy.A doctor told me her purpose is healing sick people. Many parents tell me, “My purpose is raising my children.” The key to purpose is using your strengths to serve others.Without something worthwhile to do, people flounder, thus losing the aim of life.
The third pillar of meaning is also about stepping beyond yourself, but in a completely different way: transcendence (超然).Transcendent experiences can change you.Transcendent states are those rare moments when you're lifted above the hustle and bustle of daily life, your sense of self fades away, and you feel connected to a higher reality. For me, I'm a writer, and it happens through writing.Sometimes I get so in the zone that I lose all sense of time and place.
The fourth pillar is storytelling, the story you tell yourself about yourself.Creating a narrative from the events of your life brings clarity. It helps you understand how you became you.But we don't always realise that we're the authors of our stories and can change the way we're telling them.Your life isn't just a list of events. You can edit, interpret and retell your story, even as you're constrained by the facts.
That's the power of meaning.Happiness comes and goes. But when life is really good and when things are really bad, having meaning gives you something to hold on to.

A.Confused. B.Distracted.
C.Disappointed. D.Saddened.
故选A。]
14.Which pillar can describe an artist obsessed with her work despite repeated failures
A.Belonging. B.Purpose.
C.Transcendence. D.Storytelling.
15.What does the passage aim to tell us
A.Meaning is superior to happiness.
B.Meaning is the way to success.
C.Chasing meaning can make people happy.
D.Meaning has deeper psychological significance.
故选A。]
A latest study finds that ratings of honesty and humility among employees may predict how their bosses view job performance. 16
Over a period of a year and a half, Dr Wade, a professor of Baylor University, and his team conducted online surveys of about 270 employees from 25 companies in the health care field. 17 These results were then compared with performance reviews completed by the employees' inspectors, who rated each worker according to 35 job skills. 18
Employees who self-reported high levels of honesty and humility consistently received better job performance reviews by their supervisors.
Wade acknowledges that honesty and humility will not predict job performance in every field, especially for jobs where a high level of self-promotion is necessary, such as sales roles or entertainers. He said, however, that in many workplaces, employees who show honesty and humility will be liked by their colleagues. 19 They probably get along with their inspectors and co-workers, and this is driving some of the better performance ratings.
20 Many humble people may not self-report that they are humble, Wade said, while narcissists(自恋者) might fake humility to make themselves more appealing. While he admits his study did not have a control for such behavior, previous studies of peer ratings of humility have shown that self-reports usually connect with those of colleagues.Honesty and humility are socially desirable qualities; there's really no way around that.
A.Those invited are honest and humble.
B.Honesty and humility in jobs are essential.
C.Partly difficult to measure, humility is alternative.
D.They are trustworthy, down-to-earth, and easy to relate to.
E.Most worked in jobs that involved one-to-one care of challenging clients.
F.As honesty and humility increase, inspector ratings of job performance increase.
G.Participants in 20 states were asked to self-report on their own character qualities.

My parents love the saying “If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.” so much that they even bought a pillow with those words on it.But I was recently in a situation where I was so ready to give up.
It started last week when my friend Ollie and I were helping his grandmother Mary to carry boxes from her garage to her car for the homeless shelter rummage sale(旧杂物义卖).
At the sight of a big old trunk (大箱子),we asked Mary what was inside. But she told us that as she had lost the key,she had to find a master locksmith to figure it out.“Let me have a try,” said Ollie.“I bet I can open that lock in two minutes flat! Maybe there's a treasure inside, like gold or diamonds or an ancient map!”
Mary smiled,“I'll tell you what.If you two treasure hunters can open this trunk, you can have it,along with whatever is inside.”
Ollie got a tool kit and we set out to open the lock. But he definitely lost that bet. Those two minutes turned into two hours, with no luck at all.We had tried every tool in the kit,but the lock wouldn't move slightly.
“It's no use,” Ollie sighed.“I guess we have to give up.”
“But we can't give up!” I said.“What about ‘If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.’?”
Ollie shook his head.“Unless you know a magical key fairy,we're never getting this unlocked.”
Just then,my little brother Tex showed up.He showed great interest in the trunk.“It looks like an upside-down boat! Can I turn it over and pretend I'm sailing in the ocean?”
“Sure,” Ollie replied.“It's no good for anything else.”
“Ahoy!” Tex said, climbing on the top after Ollie and I turned it over.“I'm the captain!” He giggled as he jumped up and down. And right then,a screw (螺丝) from a hinge (铰链) came loose and rolled to the floor.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
“That's it!I know how to open it!” said Ollie.

“That's it!I know how to open it!” said Ollie. “These are regular screws. We could remove the screws so that the hinge can be taken off from the trunk!” He exclaimed with a radiant (喜气洋洋的) smile.Just now,we were so focused on the lock that we didn't try to open the trunk another way. Then we asked Tex to jump off the trunk, and turned it upright.Ollie immediately took out a screwdriver from the tool kit.In two minutes flat,he opened the trunk with my assistance.
Oh!There were only lots of shoes in the trunk! Ollie and I were pretty disappointed at the discovery, which wasn't diamonds or gold.Seeing our frustration,Mary patted us on the shoulder, saying,“These shoes are in such great shape that we can raise money by selling them at the rummage sale.” Our faces lit up and a sense of achievement crept over us.We found “treasure” after all! Our persistence finally paid off! If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.Section Ⅳ Developing ideas—Writing

A
The key to a happy life has nothing to do with getting ahead at work, making money,or travelling the world.Instead, living your best life and creating meaning is all about one thing: relationships.
A study of adult development has been running at Harvard since 1938,and is now on its second generation of participants—the children of the original study's subjects.Over decades, the research team collected data about their lives, including their physical and mental health, marital (婚姻的) status and quality, career happiness, and more.
They found the most important factor in how happy and healthy these men were over time was their relationships. In other words, finding happiness in life is all about the people you love.
The research doesn't only include romantic relationships and marriage.Quality, close relationships are important whether they are in the context of romantic relationships or closeness between friends or family members. The kind of relationship you have is less important than how close you feel with them.
However, the study only included men,and there're important gender differences in how people experience relationships. Some research suggests that men may benefit more from marriage. But they tend to have a harder time keeping friendships; as men get older, they are more likely to say they have nobody to discuss important subjects with.So it's possible that having close relationships throughout their lives might affect men differently than women.
However, the findings line up with empirical (以试验为依据的) research on the effects of loneliness.People who are socially isolated have a greater likelihood of strokes (中风),heart attacks, and higher blood pressure, not to mention mental health issues.
Unfortunately for the youngest generation, recent surveys found that young Americans are lonelier than older generations. That will likely have a big impact on how healthy and happy people feel throughout their lives.

Southend Pier is a pier (突码头) stretching out to sea for 1.3 miles.Walking to the end and back is almost the same distance as climbing the Matterhorn, one of the highest mountains in the Alps and Europe. So on hot days, most visitors will choose the pier train when they are on Southend Pier before cooling off with an ice cream, or perhaps sending a postcard from the pier's own letter box.
Completed in 1890, Southend Pier is an icon of the Victorian British seaside. Each year, it attracts thousands of tourists into Southend, a coastal town in southeastern Essex, England.Sir John Betjeman, an English poet, once stated, “The Pier is Southend; Southend is the Pier.” “Seaside resorts (a vacation place) were built on mass tourism. They made money by attracting as many visitors as possible,” says Dr Anya Chapman from Bourmemouth University.
At the start of the Victorian leisure boom, most visitors arrived at the coast by sea.Piers were the transport centers of their day.Dr Anya Chapman explains, “Before the railways, piers brought the tourists. But Southend had a disadvantage. At low tide, the sea retreats by a mile, while at high tide the water level rarely tops six meters. This meant large tourist ships couldn't dock (停靠) at Southend.Faced with losing valuable income from tourism, the solution was a record-breaking pier.”
By the 1940s around four million visitors walked on the boards each year at Southend. However, tourist numbers fell with the rise of European package holidays.Britain's piers faced being washed away by the tide of changing tastes. In 1980 Southend Pier closed.Luckily, campaigners saved it from the threat of being torn down.
Piers have already developed to broaden their appeal.Attractions on offer now range from aquariums (水族馆) to zip wires. And these seaside structures still provide a timeless pleasure. The charm of the sea has been with us for centuries and piers offer a simple excitement — being able to walk on water.Of the one hundred or so Victorian piers,61 have survived with 56 open to the public.

A.To show Southend's big attraction to tourists.
B.To tell the challenge of building Southend Pier.
C.To describe the distinctive beauty of Southend Pier.
D.To explain the necessity of Southend Pier's unusual length.
根据第三段中的“At low tide, the sea retreats by a mile, while at high tide the water level rarely tops six meters....Faced with losing valuable income from tourism, the solution was a record-breaking pier.”

Tuesdays with Morrie
Despite① being a sports journalist② with a successful career ahead of him, Mitch Albom feels that there is something missing from his life. This all changes when he is reunited with③his favourite college professor, Morrie Schwartz.[1] On discovering that Morrie is being weakened④by a severe⑤illness, Mitch starts visiting him at his house on Tuesdays. The weekly conversations⑥between Mitch and Morrie result in a series of ⑦ lessons on the meaning of life and how best to live it.
[1]on+doing表示“一……
Arthur K ☆☆☆☆☆
This book is about dying, but it is not pessimistic⑧.Indeed, it was a pleasant surprise to find that this book is filled with⑨ joy and hope.Morrie's bravery⑩ towards the end of his life is inspirational and has made me value my own life more.In fact, far from being a book about death, it's a book about life.As Morrie says, “Once you learn how to die, you learn how to live.”[2] As Morrie anticipates his own death, he observes everything as though through new eyes—the things around him seem more beautiful than ever before and hold new meanings. [3] From his window, he watches each season change, knowing it could be his last. This encourages us to appreciate what we have, and to make the most of each day.
as though相当于as if,意为“似乎,好像……”,引导方式状语从句。
[3]本句为简单句,knowing it could be his last 为动词-ing形式短语作伴随状语。
Amy Wang ☆☆☆☆☆
I think this book should be on all school reading lists .[4] After finishing it, I feel I have been given a deeper insight into the world and can see things from a different point of view. On the 11th Tuesday, Morrie explains that “... the big things—how we think, what we value —those you must choose yourself. You can't let anyone—or any society—determine those for you”.While we are living, we tend to get distracted by unimportant things, such as gathering material possessions .[5] I think it's important for young people to know that making a lot of money won't always make them happy, or that looking different doesn't make a person abnormal ! It's up to us to find out what is important in our lives and establish our own values.
之后”,finishing it作介词after的宾语。
[5]本句为复合句,I think为句子的主谓语,it's important for young people to... 为省略了that的宾语从句;在宾语从句中,that making a lot of money won't always make them happy和that looking different doesn't make a person abnormal又是or连接的并列结构,作know的宾语。
Morrie says that most people “seem half-asleep”,even when they're doing things they think are important.Reading this book made me feel as if I'd been woken up from a long sleep and finally opened my eyes to the world!
Marty ☆☆☆☆☆
[6] Despite its widespread recognition , my first impression was that Tuesdays with Morrie is just made up of a collection of over-emotional thoughts and messages, many of which are repeated. But thinking back, it did teach me a lesson or two.The book made me stop and think about how much I am influenced by popular culture and the importance of creating my own values based on love and open communication.Although it isn't my favourite book, I'd still recommend that people read it—after all, it is something that's a bit different!
[6]本句为复合句,despite引导让步状语从句;that引导表语从句,作was的表语;many of which are repeated 为“代词+of+关系代词”引导的非限制性定语从句。
Vivian ☆☆☆☆☆
Warning! A box of tissues will be needed to get through this book!Morrie's reflections on love and friendship made me think about my life and all the good friends that I've lost touch with along the way.It made me realise just how much I miss them.
I guess that's one of the lessons of the book—always keep in touch with the good people you meet as you go through life.[7] Like Mitch, Morrie makes you aware that you want to die feeling that you have lived life to the full , knowing that you are loved and have loved others as much as you could. As Morrie's favourite poet Auden said, “Love each other or perish.”

It was once considered an important status symbol—but having a home phone is increasingly seen as a white elephant.New figures show that one in five households no longer bother with a landline (固定电话),and almost a third of those that do never actually use it.
The vast majority of people who still have a home phone—72 percent—say they only have it because it is part of their broadband package. But that's not the only reason to desert the home phone—20 percent of those surveyed said that they were fed up with the number of cold calls and would-be scammers (诈骗者).
Digital media expert Dr Elinor Carmi said there was a generational and social divide in phone use.She explained: “If you're young and have the mobility to go outside, you would rely on a mobile phone. But if you are older, disabled and perhaps poorer, our research shows you're more likely to use a landline. If you are richer, you will have access to more smart devices — a smart TV, smartphone or laptop. But the poorer you are—or if you are older, your use of these devices is more limited.”
Last year, research from regulator Ofcom found that the amount of time spent on landline calls annually in the UK had halved over just six years, to 54 billion minutes. The new study also showed that more than a quarter of households have decided to find a broadband provider that does not charge for their unused landline, but only six percent have done so.

Many people think that positive thinking is mostly about keeping one's head in the sand and ignoring daily problems, trying to look optimistic. In reality it has more to do with the way an individual talks to himself.Self-talk is a constant stream of thoughts of a person, who is often unaware and uncertain of some events, phenomena, people, or even the person himself. 1 Meanwhile, positive thinking can help to stop negative self-talks and start to form a positive view on an issue.People who regularly practise positive thinking tend to solve problems more effectively. They are less exposed to stress caused by external factors. They tend to believe in themselves and in what they do.
2 People who think positively demonstrate increased lifespans (寿命), lower rates of depression and anxiety, better physical and psychological health, reduced risks of death from heart problems.Positive thinking also contributes to one's ability to deal with problems and hardships. 3 For example, researchers have found that in the case of a crisis accompanied by strong emotions, such as a natural disaster, positive thinking can provide a sort of buffer (缓冲作用) against depression and anxiety.Resilient (适应性强的) people who think positively tend to treat every problem as a challenge, a chance for improvement of any kind, or as an opportunity for personal growth.Pessimists, on the contrary, tend to perceive problems as a source of additional stress. 4
In conclusion, positive thinking is a powerful and effective tool for dealing with hard times and improving the quality of one's life.It doesn't have anything to do with ignorant optimism when an individual refuses to notice a problem. 5 Thinking in a positive, self-encouraging way brings about many benefits to one's physical and mental health.
A.It doesn't cause any severe emotional discomfort, either.
B.Negative self-talk damages self-confidence and decreases self-respect.
C.It helps one to remain clear-headed and confident in difficult situations.
D.Positive thinking has several beneficial effects on the body and the mind.
E.As thinking changes, an individual's behaviour and habits change as well.
F.They often offer a real alternative to the common and regular way of thinking.
G.They often feel discouraged long before trying to solve the problem, even if small.
