(江苏省南京市秦淮区2022-2023学年高一下学期期末)There is a huge variety of landscape a few hours away from London, in anyone of Britain’s largest areas of protected countryside, and its national parks.
The Cairngorms
The biggest is the Cairngorms in northern Scotland, with some of the country’s highest mountains and the best place for skiing. Pony-trekking, climbing and fishing are also popular, along with Scotland’s national game, golf. Wildlife enthusiasts are well rewarded—this is the home of the red deer, red squirrel and golden eagle.
The Lake District
Over the border in England is the Lake District, originally made famous by local Romantic poet William Wordsworth two hundred years ago. People have been traveling here since 1847 when a railway was built to its biggest lake, Windermere. Children’s writes have found inspiration here too, and the mountains make for excellent walking, with breathtaking views.
Snowdonia
Wales also has its fair share of impressive landscape—Snowdonia was one of the first national parks to be created, in 1951. You will find the road signs in two languages and hear Welsh spoken in the local shops. If mountain climbing is not your thing, try visiting a castle built by a 13th-century prince, or check out the nearby beaches.
The Giant’s Causeway
For the strangest coastal scenery of all, cross the Irish Sea to the Giant’s Causeway, a set of basalt(玄武岩)columns formed by volcanic activity sixty million years ago—or, as legend has it, built by warrior giant Finn McCool to walk from Northern Ireland to fight his enemy in Scotland. The stone ‘steps’ are not complete because the giant fell asleep.
21.Of all the places mentioned, where can you go skiing
A. The Cairngorms. B. The Lake District.
C. Snowdonia. D. The Giant’s Causeway.
22.What similarity does the Lake Distrct and Snowdonia share

(江苏省南京市江宁区2022-2023学年高一下学期期末)Throughout the past year, we followed some interesting new inventions in the AI field. Here is a review of four notable ones.
TOOL1
The AI-controlled tool was built to translate between English and Hokkien(闽南语). The project requires unusual development methods because Hokkien, mainly a spoken language, doesn’t have a widely applied written form. Researchers said they trained their AI models with written text examples from Mandarin Chinese, which is
similar to Hokkien.
TOOL 2
Researchers developed an AI-driven algorithm(算法)that uses pig sounds to interpret different emotions the animals could be experiencing. They said the tool is expected to lead to further systems farmers can use to improve the productivity and well-being of their animals.
TOOL 3
This is a new AI method of identifying Parkinson’s disease(帕金森病), measuring its severity and recording its progression. It works by measuring a person’s breathing patterns during sleep. Researchers noted early signs of Parkinson’s are not easy to discover. But their experiments showed with measurement for just one night of sleep, the AI system was able to identify Parkinson’s with an accuracy of 86 percent.
TOOL4
The tool, called Ithaca, is designed to help fill in missing words in ancient writing. The research team said that when historians work on their own, the success rate of repairing damaged writing is about 25 percent. But when they team up with Ithaca to assist in their work, the success rate jumps to 72 percent.
21.Which tool may attract agriculture majors’ interest
A. TOOL 1. B. TOOL 2. C. TOOL 3. D. TOOL 4.
22.What can users do with Tool 3
A. Learn what Parkinson’s is. B. Assess the risk of Parkinson’s.
C. Recognize early-stage Parkinson’s. D. Prevent Parkinson’s from worsening.
23.What do we know about Ithaca
A. It is programmed to write texts. B. It can improve historians’ work efficiency.
C. It helps recognize ancient writing. D. It is able to repair damaged writing completely.

(江苏省无锡市2022-2023学年高一下学期期末)Ida Keeling’s daughter, Cheryl, a lifelong athlete, thought that maybe what would pull her mother out from under her dark cloud was something that would get her pumping again. She suggested a run. Not just a jog around the block, but an official run. At the time, Ida Keeling was 67.
Keeling had grown up poor in Harlem, and had done hard work in factories. She had lost her husband early to a heart attack, and two of her four children—both of her sons—died in unsolved drug-related incidents in 1978 and 1981.
Keeling had sunk into a deep depression, and her health had begun to slide. Her daughters began to worry that they soon might be losing their mother as well.
It had been decades since Keeling had done any running, and she would later recall that first “mini-run” feeling as if it would never end. But when it did, “I just threw off all my bad memories.”
She hasn’t stopped running since, and it’s no longer the tough work it was during that first meet. Since then, the small Keeling has set records for 60 meters in the 95-to-99 age group, and in 100 meters for the over-100 group.
“I was just exercising,” she says regarding that first run, “and now I’m all over the world.”
When she’s not running, she’s working out. She’s in the gym three to four days a week, running on tread-mills(跑步机), working out with weights and pedaling on the exercise bike, and even squeezing in some squats(深蹲)while she’s cooking. Part of her healthy diet is occasional brandy wine mixed with her coffee or water to aid circulation(血液循环).
She’s written a book about her experiences, titled Can’t Nothing Bring Me Down: Chasing Myself in the Race Against Time. Her philosophy is also suitable for a runner: “Every day is another day forward.”
24.What do the underlined words “get her pumping” mean in paragraph 1
A. Free her from great pressure. B. Fill her with life and energy.
C. Equip her with self-confidence. D. Remind her of her problems.
25.Why did Keeling suffer from a deep depression

C. Working out whenever possible. D. Brandy wine mixed with coffee.

A. Athletic and strong-willed. B. Caring and sport-loving.
C. Modest and hard-working. D. Humorous and out-going.

22.What similarity does the Lake Distrct and Snowdonia share

TOOL1
The AI-controlled tool was built to translate between English and Hokkien(闽南语). The project requires unusual development methods because Hokkien, mainly a spoken language, doesn’t have a widely applied written form. Researchers said they trained their AI models with written text examples from Mandarin Chinese, which is similar to Hokkien.

Want to read a perfect children’s book Explore some recommendations from trusted critics.
My Brother Is Away(Sara Greenwood, illustrated by Luisa Uribe)
It’s never easy to explain that a family member is kept in prison, and it can be especially hard for children. This touching book draws on the author’s own childhood to tell the story of a young girl whose brother is in prison. What does she say to her friends who have seen him on the news And will he still love her A gentle and hopeful story for kids about very adult situations and complex feelings.(For ages 5 to 8)
Eyes that Kiss in the Corners(Joanna Ho, illustrated by Dung Ho)
This book is brilliantly written because it focuses both on how the characters’ eyes look and on how they see. Focusing on a young girl who takes pride in her “eyes that kiss in the corner and glow like warm tea”, Joanna Ho’s lyrical intergenerational story combines with Dung Ho’s warm and often magical imagery to bring us a celebration on how we see the world—and how we see ourselves.(For ages 4 to 8)
Rez Dogs(Joseph Bruchac)

If you know about the “Wood Wide Web”, you know that trees communicate through the fungi(真菌)that connect their roots. (江苏省南京市江宁区2022-2023学年高一下学期期末)Thousands of runners did up their running shoes and poured out from the starting line while crowds cheered along the course. Marathons in China are picking up the pace again.
According to the Chinese Athletics Association, a total of 133 marathons across the country have been registered for the first six months of the year. On March 26, more than 300,000 runners took part in 26 marathon events nationwide, reported China Daily.
Teenagers have also taken part in marathons. Xu Qian, a 15-year-old from Suqian, Jiangsu, loves running. He got first place in the 5-kilometer Happy Run of the Jingdong Suqian Marathon held on April 2.
For Xu, the race meant months of training and preparation. He runs about 30 to 40 kilometers in local stadiums each week ahead of the run.
“Unlike the 800-meter run at school which is more about speed, a marathon tests a runner’s endurance(耐力)and psychological quality ,” he told Teens.
When he felt tired during the race, he told himself not to give up. “In long-distance running, the only opponent you have to beat is yourself,” Xu added.
Apart from one’s willpower, kindness from the audience also plays a big part in helping runners get to the finish line. Li Zhouzi from Shanxi took part in a 3-kilometer Kid Run of the Berlin Marathon in Germany in 2019 when she was 10. The support from the people cheering along the course really encouraged her.
“When things were hard, people from across the world cheered me on. Even if it was just the words, ‘keep it up’, it meant a lot to me and I was inspired to keep going to the end,” Li told Teens.
She believes that running a marathon is about staying focused on the final goal, not the suffering along the way. “Likewise, our life is also a marathon,” Li said.

It had been decades since Keeling had done any running, and she would later recall that first “mini-run” feeling
as if it would never end.

(江苏省常州市武进区、金坛区2022-2023学年高一下学期期末)When I first heard about Summit Learning, I admit I was not a bit excited. I thought it would lower my interactions(互动)with others. But when I got to experience it firsthand, I was surprised.
Recently, we did a poetry project, and one of the activities was a partner review. I would never have taken part
if it was up to me, as I prefer to work independently. But when I got involved, I found the experience had done something I thought nearly impossible—it made my poem better. My partner informed me of my mistakes and told me where I could give more details.
One of our final products of the project was to present our poem to the class. I’ve always loved public speaking, but I thought with Summit Learning I would have fewer chances to speak. I was wrong. The activities we did with a partner gave me an extra push of confidence and inspired me to do more to make my presentation the best it could possibly be.
Interactions like these are what Summit Learning is all about. This style of learning brings a positive, hard-working culture that allows you to push your limits and keep going. It creates a sense of community, since we are all working towards a similar goal.
I have always been ahead and advanced, but in a normal classroom there are limits on what you can do. With Summit Learning, I can go beyond expectations in projects or move ahead in learning new content when I’m ready. I have ownership of my work and work towards my goals.
Summit Learning has showed me how much people can grow and change. It has helped me see people and myself differently. It has been one of the greatest experiences of my life, and I cannot see myself back to a “normal” classroom.
24.What was the author’s first response to Summit Learning
A. He was eager to take part. B. He was anxious to show up.
C. He was ready to give up. D. He was unwilling to attend.

A. It improved his poem and confidence. B. It reminded him to be independent.
C. It gave him a chance to speak publicly. D. It gave him a sense of responsibility.
26.What can be inferred about Summit Learning
A. It highlights poetry. B. It transforms the learning style.
C. It values individuality. D. It teaches public presentation.
27.How does the author find Summit Learning now
A. Rigid. B. Challenging. C. Inspiring. D. Normal.

(江苏省南通市2022-2023学年高一下学期期末)When my daughter was seven years old, she came home from soccer practice clearly downhearted. When asked, she told me what a teammate said: her teeth were too
yellow. My heart broke for her. As parents, we try to keep our children safe, but we can’t always be there to protect our kids from unkind words. I tried to console my daughter. I told her that she has a beautiful smile with nice, strong, healthy teeth. I told her not to let someone else’s criticisms influence her. On the inside, though, I worried. From my youth, I’ve struggled with the concept that my self-worth was directly related to my physical appearance.
When I became a mom, I was afraid that this concept would take root in my daughter. I wanted to protect her little ears from unkind words that might skew(歪曲)her idea of self-worth. I wanted to protect her little eyes from unrealistic beauty standards set by magazines, television, and movies. I wanted to protect her little heart from being broken by the thought that she didn’t live up to the standards in some way.
How, then, can we teach our kids that they are much more than their appearance We can start by modeling kindness, and self-acceptance in our own lives. Kids tend to copy what adults do and say, so be careful. If we are putting ourselves down, our kids will follow in our footsteps. Instead, adopt a positive attitude when it comes to your own self-worth. Praise kids for their acts of kindness, like sharing with a friend or helping a family member without being asked and talk to them about how it makes them feel.
It’s a hard thing for parents to teach children to be confident in their own skin and to pay more attention to their inner beauty than outward appearance. It’s also worthy of note that there’s nothing wrong with telling your kids they are beautiful. I tell my kids that they’re beautiful all the time. Hopefully, in doing so, they’ll begin to understand that there’s so much more to them than just their shells.
24.What does the underlined word “console” probably mean in paragraph 1
A. Influence. B. Comfort. C. Accompany. D. Criticize.
25.What does the author try to express in paragraph 2
A. Her expectation for her daughter’s future. B. Her concerns about her daughter’s growth.
C. Her hope to protect her kid from falling ill. D. Her attempts to keep her daughter energetic.
26.How should we educate our kids about self-worth according to the author
A. By delivering a speech to them. B. By sharing our ideas with them.
C. By accepting all their decisions. D. By setting a good example to them.
27.What does the author advise us to do in the last paragraph
A. Encourage kids to ignore the outer beauty.
B. Avoid praising the appearance of our children.
C. Teach our kids the significance of inner beauty.
D. Try to listen to our children as much as possible.

(江苏省泰州市2022-2023学年高一下学期期末)The total number of domestic(国内的)trips during the past May Day holiday was 274 million, up 70.83 percent than last year. and 119. 09 percent over the same period in 2019, generating 148.056 billion yuan($21.44 billion)in tourism profits, up 128.90 percent than last year, and 100.66 percent over the same period in 2019. As the first May Day holiday after new pandemic(流行病)policies, it was expected that people’s long-controlled desire to travel would be satisfied, but no one expected it would do so to this extent.
The outstanding tourism performance during this year’s May Day holiday mainly resulted from the improvement of public services. Actually, even before the holiday, many places were improving tourism facilities to meet the increased stream of visitors. Zibo in Shandong province, popular for its barbecue, for example, opened parking lots and toilets for the public for free. Only by improving public services can a region keep attracting tourists all the time.
The explosive growth of tourism during the May Day holiday is a manifestation of China’s economic power, especially the power of the consumer market. It also shows the faster recovery of public confidence, which will not only stimulate the growth of service consumption, but also stimulate the expansion of demand in other industries, thus promoting the expansion of overall domestic demand and helping the economic recovery to speed up.
As long as the country focuses on expanding domestic demand and does what it can do to realize the potential of domestic consumption, the continuous development of China’s economy is certain.
24.Why are the figures mentioned in the beginning
A. To show the recovery of Chinese tourism.
B. To show the expectation of Chinese tourists.
C. To show the development of Chinese economy.
D. To show the improvement of our living standard.

(江苏省泰州市2022-2023学年高一下学期期末)At the age of 70, the famous painter Marc Chagall discovered that by designing stained-glass windows, he could breathe bright color and light into his artwork.
Born in 1887 in a Russian town, Chagall started painting when he was 19. He was tired of the dull colors of traditional Russian art. Thus in 1911, he moved to Paris. There, actors, writers, musicians and artists from around the world were creating new art forms. In France, Chagall learned new ways of painting, but stayed true to his childhood memories. While others chose modern subjects, he painted scenes of fantasy and fairy tales in an older, farmer-like way of life.
One day, during a walk through the French countryside, he discovered a picturesque church He imagined replacing its walls with stained-glass windows. Then, in another 700-year-old church, he saw a stained-glass window containing a green donkey. It dawned on him that he could create his own.
He began to co-work with master glassworker Charles Marq. Many stained-glass windows: were made of flat colors, but Chagall used various techniques to create the effects he wanted. He painted images on glass, then had it fired to high temperatures, making the lines and colors part of the glass. Marq admired Chagall’s determination. He also said Chagall worked with the carefulness of those rope walkers he admires, without which they couldn’t fly in their weightlessness up there.
In 1964, Chagall designed a stained-glass window for the United Nations building in New York. The UN works for international peace. Using a blue background as the symbol of peace and life, Chagall designed the window with angels floating in the sky, and mothers holding their children.
Chagall lived through two world wars and the loss of loved ones. He often refused payment for his stained-glass windows, especially those he made for churches. He created them as gifts for the world, gifts that

(江苏省扬州市2022-2023学年高一下学期期末)Mike White wasn’t too concerned when his five-year-old dog, BuzzMan, hadn’t returned last February. Si, it had been a few hours, so using his cell phone, White followed the sound from the GPS on the dog to a narrow cave entrance just large enough for a dog like BuzzMan. There were fresh dog prints outside. Now White was much more concerned.
Brewington and Mirza were called in for help. They arrived at once and set about enlarging the entranceway by hand. The passageway was just three feet high, forcing the two men to slowly crawl(爬行), the only light coming from headlamps attached to their helmets(头盔). They stopped when they hit a tight space and returned to the outside world.
When BuzzMan hadn’t appeared by Sunday afternoon, smaller volunteers were called in. At 5:00 p.m., four new cavers, two men and two women, moved through the entrance. What added to their difficulty was the dangerous cave floods. “If it rains,” Mirza says, “the cave will kill people.” That night’s weather forecast: rain.
After an hour or so, they reached a difficult situation and could go no farther. Still, one of them, Romanak, decided to push a bit farther before quitting. He crawled 30 feet more, and the passage gave way to a large room.
And there was BuzzMan, standing on a narrow rock. Romanak gently attached a chain to his collar, helping him off the rock and out.
At 9:30 p.m.—30 hours later, BuzzMan got out of the cave, running straight to Mike White and licking him by wet kisses.

(江苏省徐州市2022-2023学年高一下学期期末)Babusha, or “eight-step sands”, got its name because the desert was always just eight steps away from the farmers’ doors. Today, the desert’s southward movement has been stopped thanks to a green belt planted in the last 40 years by Guo Wangang and his colleagues. As a result, Guo was named a National Moral Model in 2020.
Guo is only part of the second generation of “soldiers” to fight against the desert. His father was one of the six
men who first began planting trees in Babusha. When Guo’s father fell ill in 1983, he hoped that his son would follow in his footsteps.
Guo remembers being reluctant to give up his stable government job. “My father repeatedly stressed that we had to make sure our farms weren’t eaten by the desert,” Guo said, adding that he eventually agreed to work at the farm because he didn’t want to see the trees die.
However, it was the deadly sandstorm in 1993 that turned Guo into a determined “soldier”. The fast moving brown wall of dust reached high into the sky and turned day into night. Guo was working in the desert with his colleagues when it hit. They only managed to get home after trekking for six hours in darkness. Later, he learned that 23 students were found dead in a river as they tried to get home from school during the sandstorm.
Since then, Guo and his colleagues have continued planting trees every spring and fall, pruning(修剪)them in winter and watching out for fire. Their struggle continues. Today more and more young people have joined with scientific and innovative methods. For example, the farm now is subsidized(资助)by Ant Forest, a public welfare project launched by the e-commerce giant, Alibaba. It rewards users with virtual energy in exchange for low-carbon activities, which can then be used to do things, like having trees planted.

(江苏省徐州市2022-2023学年高一下学期期末)No high school is alike in the United States, but there is one tradition that nearly every school has: senior prank(恶作剧). Linganore is no exception, and this year the class of 2023 certainly lived up to your expectations.
Like many senior pranks, there were many different ideas, one of which was to take every desk and chair out of classes and put them in the stadium. Fortunately for Linganore teachers, this concept was not put into action; instead, the students stuck with the classic method of throwing paper on anything and everything. Next, some seniors used balloons to totally fill the stairs on Main Street closest to the front entrance. Many seniors parked in the worst ways possible throughout the parking lots.
Cole Simmonds arrived at school before much of the chaos started. Along with witnessing seniors throw paper on trees, Simmonds’ car was a victim of the prank when it was attacked with water balloons. In addition to being annoyed by the water balloons, Simmonds was also unhappy with the lack of originality from the seniors.
The last part of the seniors’ final day included a Slip & Slide placed at the top of the hill behind the school that went down to the lower parking lot. To prevent injury, a teacher supervised the seniors’ Slip & Slide to ensure safety. The goals of the Slip Slide were not only to make the seniors’ last day something to remember but to encourage students to participate in fun activities permitted by the school.
Although not as humorous or creative as some believed it could have been, the Slip & Slide and balloons in the stairs were very impressive and were good aspects of this year’s prank. Hopefully, the class of 2024 will do something that not only avoids annoying people but is also funny.

(江苏省淮安市2022-2023学年高一下学期期末)“What if I told you that I murdered Basil ”
“You couldn’t murder anyone, Dorian. He probably fell into the Seine from a bus. By the way, where’s that wonderful portrait he did of you Oh! I remember now. You told me years ago that you sent it to Selby Manor and that it got lost or stolen on the way. What a pity! I wanted to buy it. I wish I had now.” Lord Henry said.
“I never really liked it,” said Dorian.
“How have you kept your youth, Dorian You must have some secret. I’m only ten years older than you are, and I’m wrinkled and old. Please, tell me your secret. To get back my youth, I’d do anything in the world, except take exercise, get up early, or be respectable.”
When Dorian arrived home that night, he sent his servant to bed, and sat down on the sofa in the library. Then he began to think about his life.
“I’ve been an evil influence on my friends, and I’ve ruined the lives of many good young people,” he thought, “Ah! Why did I pray for the portrait to grow old, and for me to stay young I worshiped beauty and eternal youth, but they ruined me. It’s better not to think of the past. Nothing can change that. I must think of the future. James Vane is dead. Alan Campbell is dead, too. He shot himself one night in his laboratory.”
“I’m safe now,” he continued. “Basil painted the portrait that ruined my life. I can’t forgive him for that. Everything is the portrait’s fault.”
He began to wonder about the portrait. “If I’m good, maybe the portrait will become beautiful again,” he thought. “I’ll go and look.”
He took the lamp from the table and went upstairs. As he unlocked the door, he smiled. “Yes, I’ll be good,” he thought, “I won’t be frightened of this portrait any more.”
He went upstairs to the room and locked the door. Then he pulled the purple cloth off the portrait. He gave a cry of pain. The portrait was more horrible. His face looked more evil. There was new blood on the hand and on the feet.
Dorian trembled with fear. Dorian looked round the room and saw the knife that stabbed Basil Hallward. It was bright and shining.
“This knife killed the artist, and now it will kill the artist’s work,” he thought.

(江苏省盐城市2022-2023学年高一下学期期末)Teachers are some of the world’s most underappreciated heroes. Not only are they themselves heroes, but they attempt to bring out the inner heroes of future generations. Raj, a film professor at New Mexico State University is a perfect example.
Raj was born in Sri Lanka, an island off the coast of India. From a nearly age, he suffered from a variety of medical conditions. Growing political tensions in Sri Lanka forced him and his family to relocate to the United States.
Raj was thrown into a world where he was different. He looked different, spoke a different language, and
hardest of all, still dealt with serious medical conditions. However, his open-mindedness and sense of humor eventually won him the respect of his classmates. On making friends, Raj tells us, “I think that so many issues in the world come from the fact that we are isolated within groups, yet we have so much in common. Instead of focusing on what’s different, let’s find our commonalities, and we’ll find ways to connect with each other.”
Even as a child, Raj did not allow his diseases to consume him, and he continued to be perfect academically. Raj has continued to receive spinal(脊柱)surgeries that force him to re-learn how to walk and drive. His natural interest in creativity led him to UCLA’s world-class fine-arts program. Aside from being a film professor, he is a successful filmmaker.
It is this positivity that gets Raj to where he is today. “I think that even the smallest positive impact that we can have on other people’s lives can make us heroes,” he tells us. “It may be very small for us, but that small thing could be huge for the person you do it for.”

A long-term subscriber(订阅者)to Pianist, Langford is retired, having enjoyed a career in engineering. During his early years he received some help from his brother on the knowledge of music, but he was mainly self-taught, learning by ear. “I was always attracted to the piano. I took some evening classes in piano and theory later on, but work left little time to practise. Now that I’ve retired I spend almost all my time at the piano. I always thought I had
some musical ability, and though I don’t consider myself much of a pianist, I do enjoy composing.”
