(江苏省南京市江宁区2022-2023学年高一下学期期末)Social networking websites enforce the idea that it’s important to stay connected to be happy and achieve success. However, the opportunity to spend time with yourself allows you to look inward and find direction to your life.
Depend on yourself.
___36___ Other people help you get a neutral(中立的)opinion, but your ability to make the final decisions takes you a long way. Some always fear to be all alone, because they don’t notice that being alone helps you learn to depend upon yourself. It paves new ways for success, as you no longer need to be around those who offer their advice which is valuable but takes away the opportunity to be self-dependent.
___37___
A busy routine prevents you from looking at your life from a distance. Sometimes it is important to sit back and analyze your options and the progress you have made so far. ___38___
Learn to value yourself.
Being alone gives you the chance to value your needs and requirements. Most people spend all their lives trying to make other people happy. Others believe that nothing but worldly possessions and a bunch of friends can give them happiness. ___39___ Spending time alone helps you learn to be nice to yourself and know that you are above everything else. There is no need to sacrifice your dreams simply because other people do not approve of them. ___40___
Being alone gives you an opportunity to explore the unknown side to your personality, which is truly awesome. A true acceptance of who you are enables you to spread love all around you.
A. Observe things closely.
B. Regain your confidence.
C. This is not true at all.
D. You should believe in yourself and live life to the fullest.
E. The right decision is the one made by yourself.

【答案】36. F 37. A 38. G 39. C 40. D
【语篇导读】本文是一篇说明文。如今社交网站强化了这样一种观点:保持联系对于快乐和取得成功是很重要的。然而,花时间和自己在一起的机会可以让你审视内心,找到你生活的方向,本文讲述了独处的益处。
36.由第一段的“However, the opportunity to spend time with yourself allows you to look inward and find direction to your life.(然而,花时间与自己相处的机会可以让你审视自己的内心,找到生活的方向)”可知,文章主要从几方面论述了独处的意义。根据第一个小标题“Depend on yourself(依靠自己)”以及后文“… being alone helps you learn to depend upon yourself. It paves new ways for success …(独处可以帮助你学会依赖自己。它为成功铺平了新的道路)”可知,这一段主要论述了独处可以帮助我们养成依靠自己的习惯,F项“to rely on your own abilities”和“alone”呼应主题,故F项“当你独自一人时,你会学会依靠自己的能力取得进步”符合语境,故答案为F。
37.空处是段落标题。根据后文“A busy routine prevents you from looking at your life from a distance. Sometimes it is important to sit back and analyze your options and the progress you have made so far.(繁忙的日常生活使你无法从远处审视自己的生活。有时候,坐下来分析你的选择和你目前所取得的进步是很重要的)”可知,这一段主要论述独处可以使我们更好地反思、审视自己的生活,所以小标题“Observe things closely”即认真地观察、审视事情,符合这一段的中心思想,故答案为A。
38.前文“A busy routine prevents you from looking at your life from a distance. Sometimes it is important to sit back and analyze your options and the progress you have made so far.(繁忙的日常生活使你无法从远处审视自己的生活。有时候,坐下来分析你的选择和你目前所取得的进步是很重要的)”论述了我们需要审视和反思自己的生活的作用,G项“这可以帮助我们看清一些问题,在未来做出更好的决定。”总结上文,故答案为G。
39.前文“Others believe that nothing but worldly possessions and a bunch of friends can give them happiness.(一些人认为只有世俗的财产和一群朋友才能给他们幸福)”提到一些人认为只有世俗的财产和众多的朋友可以为他们带来快乐,下文“Spending time alone helps you learn to be nice to yourself and know that you are above everything else.(花时间独处可以帮助你学会善待自己,让你知道自己高于一切)”提到要学会善待自己,要知道自己高于一切,因此推断上文的观点和作者的观点相悖,C项“这完全不是真的”符合语境,承上启下。故答案为C。
40.前文“There is no need to sacrifice your dreams simply because other people do not approve of them.(没有必要

Four ways to find humour in everyday life
If you think your life is too boring to be funny, joke’s on you: humour is all around us.

● ___38___
We’re often not aware of what’s in front of us until we start looking for it, so set a daily intention to look for humour. “When you wake up in the morning, say, ‘I’m going to find one thing today that I can giggle at,’” suggests Sultanoff. But if you face your fears, over time your body will start to accept them as something manageable. And your anxiety should decrease little by little. You can take baby steps here. This should help you with your anxiety.
A. Face your fears
B. Talk to people frequently

Why Can’t People Avoid Touching Museum Objects
When paying a visit to the British Museum, you can see visitors touch objects even if the museum rules say no touching is permitted. ___36___ You stop some people from touching while there are more.
Most museum-going is still a chiefly visual(视觉的)experience for visitors to appreciate the works of art.
___37___ Moreover, in the past few years more and more museums have been trying to involve additional senses, like sounds and smells. But touch, especially, is only allowed in certain areas, like the Louvre’s Touch Gallery, or the British Museum’s Hands On Desks.
___38___ When people visited the collection, the objects were passed around. Museums continued with this spirit of openness at first. But with museums growing, the spirit no longer existed. When you’ve got four million visitors a year, you can hardly have everybody touch something. People are difficult to deal with and likely to damage the artworks. So the rule against touching artworks makes great sense. Smaller museums still sometimes encourage visitors to touch their objects. ___39___
Why are we so unwilling to keep our hands to ourselves ___40___ But there’s a larger truth. You can’t really learn more about exhibits if you don’t touch them. Others say they want to feel how deep an engraving(雕刻)goes, in order to understand the artistic skills better. In this way, touching is part of trying to somehow establish relationship with the past.
A. At the beginning, touch was allowed in museums.
B. However, the bigger ones would rather advertise themselves as no touching.
C. Some people just want to ensure the artworks are real.
D. Visitors can find out more about exhibits from reading signs around.
E. Museum guards say it’s impossible to prevent people from breaking the no-touch rule.
F. It helps to show respect for the ancient artists.
G. Before there were museums, there were curiosity rooms full of interesting objects from all over the world.

37.由上文“Most museum-going is still a chiefly visual(视觉的)experience for visitors to appreciate the works of art.(大多数博物馆参观仍然是游客欣赏艺术作品的主要视觉体验)”可知,大多数博物馆参观仍是视觉体验,

Four ways to find humour in everyday life
If you think your life is too boring to be funny, joke’s on you: humour is all around us.
___36___ It sparks energy, improves mood and increases overall health. Adding humour to life also leads to social benefits. When you experience humour with somebody, you bond with them. When people are bonded, they feel more relaxed and comfortable. Doctor Sultanoff offered the following tips.

● ___38___
We’re often not aware of what’s in front of us until we start looking for it, so set a daily intention to look for humour. “When you wake up in the morning, say, ‘I’m going to find one thing today that I can giggle at,’” suggests Sultanoff. You’ll find the funny in unexpected places and laugh a lot more.

Sultanoff said, “Be sure to cover up the baby.” ___40___ What would you say if you were the man Well, after a moment’s embarrassment, the man said, “Don’t worry about my son. Understand the spotlight effect(焦点效应)
Many people assume that they’re being judged all the time but actually it may only be occasional. Whenever you start feeling anxious outside, you can remind yourself of this. ___37___. It will give you an advantage in social situations.
Use cognitive restructuring(认知重建)
___38___. For example, you stutter(结巴)a bit while talking with someone else. Then you begin to worry you’ve messed up and that this person now thinks less of you. This way of thinking will immediately relax you.
___39___
If you always run away from a fear, your body and mind will remember it as something dangerous enough to run away from. But if you face your fears, over time your body will start to accept them as something manageable. And your anxiety should decrease little by little. You can take baby steps here. Start off by saying thank you to people you often meet, such as cashiers or bus drivers. Then when you feel comfortable enough, move on to making small talks with them. ___40___. This should help you with your anxiety.

(江苏省南通市2022-2023学年高一下学期期末)It can be hard to focus on a book when your eyes feel
heavy and your head is nodding. But does reading actually make you worn out ___36___ Let’s take a closer look at the science behind why reading can make us tired.
Reading is basically guided daydreaming, and daydreaming isn’t that different from sleep. ___37___ When you’re daydreaming or lost in a book, your body is in a state of relaxation and your mind is free to wander. This can be a very pleasant experience, but it’s not surprising that it can also make you tired.
Many people enjoy lying down at the end of the day with a good book. ___38___ We make sure we’re comfortable, maybe make ourselves a hot drink and settle down to read, cosy and uninterrupted(不受打扰的). Is it any wonder reading can make us nod off
___39___ It’s not just the act of reading that can be tiring. Sitting still in a darkly lit room can signal to your brain that it’s time to go to sleep, and it increases eye pain, which can be another cause of tiredness.
What you’re reading can also play a part in how tired it makes you feel. If you’re reading a particularly dull text, it’s natural that your brain will start to shut down in an attempt to protect itself! If you’re trying to process a lot of information, your brain will be working hard and you may start to feel tired. ___40___
A. It is a common practice to do so.
B. Reading in low light makes you tired.
C. You should improve some aspects of reading.
D. In fact, you spend a long period of time reading.
E. Actually, both activities share some common features.

How to Quiet a Complainer(抱怨者)
Have you ever suffered your mother’s complaints about her aches and pains Lengthy complaints will ruin the quality of your time together. ___36___ Actually there are some ways to get a complainer to stop without starting an argument.
Change the subject. Some complainers will switch topics if you shift the conversation in a direction that interests them. If your neighbor is complaining about the phone company, tell her about an unexpected call you received from an old friend. If your coworker is complaining about your boss, ask whether he met the new employee. ___37___
Summarize the complaint. If your complainer keeps repeating himself, he may stop if you show that you’re listening. ___38___ Using “I” statements rather than “you” statements show that you’re interested rather than trying to shut the person down. Avoid saying the word complaining. Saying you hear their dissatisfaction gets the points across.
Try to be honest. When you have things to do, tell the complainer that you must cut the conversation short.
___39___ You can simply be honest, even saying you need to move on so the conversation doesn’t bring you down –especially if it’s someone who’s complained to you many times before.
___40___ When it’s someone very close to you–your partner, sibling, or best friend–who stresses you out with a lot of negativity, it’s important to talk about the problem with an open heart. Otherwise, if you bottle up your feelings and continue listening to repeated complaints, you may grow angry or start avoiding the person.

(江苏省华罗庚中学2022-2023学年高一下学期期末)The benefits of walking are many, but deciding how many miles to cover and how much time to spend walking each day is another matter.
Studies have shown that the average American takes between 3,000 and 4,000 steps daily doing everyday tings — about 1.5 to 2 miles. ___36___ But the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC)advises most adults to aim for 10,000 steps a day or about 5 miles. And the recommendation contributes to more positive health outcomes.
___37___ You can measure your efforts in quantities of time instead. “As a walker, you should aim for at least 30 minutes per day, or a total of 150 minutes per week,” says Austin, a licensed psychotherapist. What’s more, if 30 minutes of walking is unrealistic for you to do all at once, then breaking it up into three short, 10-minute sessions. ___38___

(江苏省常州市第一中学2022-2023学年高一下学期期末)There are few natural sounds more uplifting to my spirit than the bright and cheering calls and songs of black-capped chickadees(山雀). One of my morning routines is to step outside the house and listen for the voices of black-caps.
There is something comforting to me in black-caps’ presence. ___36___ Sometimes they are the only birds I’ll hear on my local woodland walks and for me the forest would be a lonelier place without them.
After I’d moved into a house on Anchorage’s Hillside, I placed a makeshift feeder on my home’s back. ___37___ For each, the routine was similar: dashed in, looked around, pecked(啄)at the tray, looked around again, and dashed out. Nervous little creatures, full of bright energy, they soon had me laughing at their funny way, By the time they moved on, I sensed an all-too-rare upwelling of fascination and joy.
Within days, a whole new world opened up as woodland neighbors I’d never known, or even imagined, joined the black-caps at my feeders: red-breasted nuthatches, common redpolls…What was remarkable was that all of those species were common residents of the Anchorage area. ___38___
My newfound interest in birds grew quickly, surprising even me. ___39___ I visited bookstores in search of birding guidebooks. Excitedly exchanged bird descriptions with a stranger. Purchased 50-pound bags of sunflower seeds. All of this seemed very strange to a middle-aged guy who’d never been attracted by birds. Even more, I had previously judged bird watchers to be rather dull sorts.
___40___ They’ve reminded me how my world can expand and become enriched when I make the effort to pay attention. What else awaits me in our world, I wonder, that I haven’t yet discovered or noticed
A. Nature always amazed me in its own way.

“Just think positively!”
“It could be worse.”
“You should look at the bright side!”
We’ve all heard(and maybe used)these phrases without much thought. But they could be contributing to a culture of toxic(有毒的)positivity. For those new to this term, it might sound like an oxymoron(矛盾修辞法). How can positivity be toxic Isn’t it supposed to be helpful, or “positive”, as the name suggests ___36___ “Toxic positivity is when somebody avoids all negative thoughts or feelings, pretending everything is going well when it is not,” explains Melissa Dowd, a therapist at PlushCare, a virtual health platform. Whitney Goodman, another licensed psychotherapist, describes toxic positivity as the “endless pressure to be happy and positive, no matter what the circumstances are.” ___37___ It’s also something we can cause other people to experience.
Toxic positivity causes us to suppress our emotions, which can make them worse. ___38___ “Although it can be helpful to look on the bright side when facing challenges,” Dowd says, “not coping with negative feelings in a healthy way in the moment can lead to those feelings resurfacing later in different areas of your life or as a form of anxiety.” ___39___ “If I feel like you’re going to set me aside, I’m going to stop sharing how I’m feeling,” Goodman adds.
___40___ If you’re using toxic positivity against yourself, Goodman suggests remembering it’s OK if you’re upset about something. It’s valid if something annoys you. “Allow ourselves and other people to share when they’re going through a difficult time,” she says. Dowd adds that it’s essential that “we all learn to cope with and process our emotions in a healthy way as opposed to avoiding how we feel” as life’s stressors continue to rise. For example, instead of simply saying “Just think positively,” we’d better say “Sometimes bad things happen. How can I help ”
A. Are there ways to avoid toxic positivity
B. Toxic positivity also interrupts connection.
C. It can harm people who are going through difficult times.

(江苏省常州市联盟学校2022-2023学年高一下学期期末)Austrian painter Gustav Klimt created some of his best-known masterpieces during the first decade of the 20th century. ___36___. Nazi looting(纳粹掠夺)during World War II led to the destruction of many prized Klimt works, including the Faculty Paintings: three enormous scenes titled Philosophy, Medicine and Jurisprudence.
To study these paintings, art historians have long had to make do with black-and-white photographs. Thanks to machine learning, however, researchers have now restored(恢复)historical images of the Faculty Paintings to almost their original colors. ___37___.
To create the images, Google Arts and Culture and the Belvedere Museum in Vienna developed a tool that selected information about Klimt’s use of color from different sources. The data set included newspaper descriptions of the Faculty Paintings and 80 full-color reproductions of Klimt paintings from the same period. ___38___.
Google engineer Emil Wallner spent nearly six months coding the AI algorithm(编写人工智能算法)to create color predictions. ___39___. For example, one might expect the starry sky featured in Klimt’s Philosophy to be blue, but the AI-colored version tends to be a little green, based partly on newspaper accounts that describe the painting’s greenish color.
“___40___,” says Franz Smola, who worked on the restoration with Wallner. “We were able to color Klimt’s works even in places about which we had no knowledge.”
Art lovers can explore these colorful recreations online. The restored paintings are paired with an online exhibition, “Klimt vs. Klimt: The Man of Contradictions”, which explores the painter’s life and works.
A. It was stored with other precious artworks
B. But not all of Klimt’s paintings survive today

Think back to your last presentation.
___36___ And were they engaged in what you were saying While you may think yourself to be a great speaker, it is not particularly hard to annoy your audience. Here are the top three of annoying habits in a presentation: reading the presentation(37%), having no knowledge of the subject matter(22%), using many “umms” and “uhhs”(16%).
So here are some tips to help you avoid these annoying mistakes.
The most annoying presentation habit is also one of the easiest to fall victim to. With a visual aid, you tend to look back and read what you have already written. ___37___ By reading your slides, you show no additional information, and therefore give your audience no reason to keep listening once they have finished reading the slide themselves.
One guideline I find especially effective is to ensure each slide has no more than six main points, and no more than six words per point. ___38___ When in practice, having slides with flexible layouts and proper pictures is equally important.
___39___ The more prepared you are, the better you can effectively avoid sounding like you’ve never even heard of your topic before. So in order to show your audience you know your stuff, getting ready will make all the difference.
The third most annoying habit was using many “umms” and “uhhs”, a symptom of not communicating effectively. This could be a result of stage fright, but more often than not these interjections(感叹词)happen unconsciously. ___40___
One tip for avoiding this is to practice your presentation multiple times beforehand, out loud. The more you practice, the more likely you can catch yourself before letting the “umms” and “uhhs” slip out.
A. Was it boring
B. Were people interested
C. It helps you to save your time.
D. This stops you overloading your slides with information.
E. Despite how innocent they seem, they can ruin your credibility.
F. Avoiding another annoying habit comes down to one factor: preparation.
G. However, all this shows that you can do what your audience can as well.
