Mr. Jafri is a 44-year-old artist from England. As the COVID-19 spread and many countries went into lockdown, Mr. Jafri was in Dubai. Rather than feeling stuck because he was unable to move on, Mr. Jafri decided to take on a huge project that could “make a really big difference.”
He decided to create the world’s largest painting in a way that would involve people from around the world. He asked children to send him pictures showing how they were feeling during the pandemic. He got artwork from kids in 140 different countries, some of which was included in his painting.
Using the children’s ideas as a starting point, Mr. Jafri began to paint. He created the painting in the dance hall of a closed hotel. The painting, called “The Journey of Humanity”, is over 1,600 square meters. It took Mr. Jafri seven months, up to 20 hours per day. He hurt his back by bending over so much while he painted. It took over 1,000 paintbrushes and 6,300 liters of paint to create the painting. When he finished last September, he had set a Guinness World Record for the world’s largest painting. The painting was roughly the size of four basketball courts.
Since Mr. Jafri’s goal was to raise money to help children, the painting was cut up into 70 large pieces. Mr. Jafri hoped that by selling the painting separately, he could raise $30 million. But when the sale ended on March 22, Mr. Jafri did much better than that. And he didn’t have to cut up the pieces. The whole artwork was sold for $62 million, the fourth highest price ever paid for a painting by a living artist.
Andre Abdoune, a French businessman, bought all 70 of the pieces. “The painting was very powerful when I saw it,” Mr. Abdoune said, “And for me, it would have been a mistake to separate the pieces.” Knowing that the money would go to charity also helped Mr. Abdoune decide to pay more. He plans to build a special building to show the artwork off.
4. Why did Mr. Jafri ask children to send him pictures
A. Because he felt like breaking the old thinking pattern and creating something new.
B. Because he was unable to figure out what to paint, wanting to be inspired by kids.
C. Because kids felt stuck, for they were unable to move on during lockdown.
D. Because he wanted people worldwide to participate in expressing their feelings.
5. Why did the author mention“paintbrushes and paint”in Paragraph 3
A To criticize Mr. Jafri for overuse. B. To show the massiveness of the artwork.
C. To make a comparison with other painters. D. To explain what Mr. Jafri used for painting.
6. Why did Mr. Abdoune pay more
A. Because he has been fond of charity.
B. Because the painting impressed him.
C. Because he wanted to help more children.
D. Because he didn’t want to separate the pieces.
7. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. A New Guinness World Record
B. An England Artist Achieved His Dream
C. Pandemic Inspires People On Their Paintings
D. World’s Largest Painting Sells For $62 Million
C
We know it can be hard to put your phone to bed before you sleep. However, if you’re trying to improve your sleep, you really should ditch your phone at least an hour before bedtime. Luckily, our experts can help.
Scientific evidence suggests that the blue light emitted from your phone, tablet, computer, and TV suppresses (抑制) your body’s production of melatonin, a hormone (荷尔蒙) that plays an important role in your sleep cycle. Melatonin release in the evening helps you relax before bedtime. A 2013 study that analyzed technology use and sleep patterns with data from a National Sleep Foundation poll found that using devices like phones was tied to more sleep disruption than electronics that aren’t interactive.
Many of us use the excuse that our mobile devices serve as our wake-up calls, or keep them nearby to use meditation apps. If you want to use your phone as an alarm, consider setting it a couple of hours before you turn in for the night, and then setting the phone itself to bedtime mode for the rest of the evening.
Here’s another groundbreaking idea: You could get a real alarm clock. After reviewing them at Reviewed, we recommend the Sharp Dream Caster. Not only is it easy to set a wake-up time, the clock includes white noises and rain noises to help you sleep, plus a number of volume settings to pick what works best for you.
But an alarm clock won’t help you avoid doom-scrolling through social media. Take things a step further by avoiding using electronic devices. You can try reading a book (one made of paper), taking a bath or drinking a cup of chamomile tea.
Finally, if you want to keep up your meditation practice screen-free, consider the Morphée. It looks like a little music box and comes with a variety of breathing exercises and soundscapes to help you get to sleep.
8. What does the underlined word “ditch” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Set aside. B. Pick up. C. Show off. D. Turn to.
9. What may be caused by the suppression of melatonin
A. Relaxing yourself before bedtime.
B. Sleeping less than you normally would.
C. Adapting to your sleep cycle more easily.
D. Reducing the pressure from screen use.
10. Why is the Sharp Dream Caster recommended
A. It is sold at a lower price. B. It can predict a heavy rain.
C. It is controlled by cellphone. D. It helps put your eyes together.
11. What is suggested for better sleep according to paragraph 5
A. Making the best of the eco-friendly products.
B. Making a change according to circumstances.
C. Establishing a bedtime routine without electronics.
D. Keeping a consistent bedtime and wake-up time.

In the hands of a skilled stylist, your hair can help you boost your self-confidence, express your unique personality, and maybe even attract a romantic partner. In the hands of Matter of Trust, however, your hair might be able to do something even more meaningful: help save the environment.
For more than 20 years, Matter of Trust has been collecting hair and fur from hair salons, and farmers around the world for the purpose of making “hair mats” that can assist with oil spill cleanups.
Typically, oil spills on land are cleaned up using polypropylene (聚丙烯) mats that are effective but might cause environmental problems. After all, polypropylene is a non-biodegradable (不可生物降解的) plastic that’s made from fossil fuels; using it to clean up oil therefore requires drilling for even more oil. Hair and fur, on the other hand, are of no poison, biodegradable, sustainable, and can absorb more oil.
To date, Matter of Trust has produced more than 40,000 hair mats and more than 300,000 booms, reports CNN. Matter of Trust’s products have been used to clean up not only oil spills, but also non-emergencies like oil leaks from vehicles and machines. In both cases, oil can flow into soil and water, which can harm people, plants, and wildlife, according to Matter of Trust.
Although it’s an elegant solution, it isn’t perfect. Hair mats can only be used once, for instance, and can only be dealt with through incineration (焚化) or composting (堆肥). And in the case of composting, the resulting compost isn’t suitable for growing food.
Still, hair mats are a surprisingly effective tool in the fight for a cleaner planet. And because Matter of Trust hasn’t patented its designs, all that’s needed to produce them are hair cuttings—of which there are plenty, according to Gautier, who says there are about 900,000 qualified hair salons in the U.S. alone, each of which can easily cut at least a pound of hair per week.
“Anyone can make a hair mat,” she told CNN. “It creates green jobs, it cleans water, it reduces waste, and it’s promoting sustainable resources.”
12. Which of the following is NOT the function of your hair based on this text
A It can help you keep healthy. B. It can promote your social contact.
C. It represents your personal image. D. It can help protecting environment.
13. What’s the main reason for the replacement of polypropylene mats by hair mats
A. Polypropylene mats are poisonous.
B. Hair mats are cheaper than polypropylene mats.
C. Hair mats are sustainable and environmentally friendly.
D. The raw materials for polypropylene mats are hard to find.
14. What’s Gautier’ attitude towards hair mats absorbing oil
A. It’s impractical. B. It’s of short-term effects.
C. It’s worthy to be applied. D. It increases global employment.
15. What can be inferred from the last two paragraph
A. Gautier will apply for a patent for Matter of Trust.
B. More and more hair salons will be opened in America.
C. Everyone will take action to make hair mats to clean the earth.
D. Hair mats have good prospects for development.

“Manu, wake up!” shouted Manu’s mother, Akhila. Manu pulled the blanket over himself and pretended to ignore his mother’s repeated attempts to wake him up.
“Manu! Please wake up! It’s already 6 o’clock and your school bus will be here by 7 o’clock.” Manu continued sleeping. Finally, Akhila walked up to the bedroom. “Manu, wake up! It’s time you at least learned to wake up on time and do your morning chores without so much effort from my side.” said his mother.
Finally, Manu got out of bed and started getting ready for school lazily. The school bus was already honking(按喇叭) in front of his house while Manu was brushing his teeth. Akhila requested the driver to wait for a few minutes. She quickly helped Manu get ready and helped him get to the school bus.
“Thank God. Manu did not miss his bus today!” She sighed. Akhila is really concerned about her son. Manu will not do anything on time, whether it is walking up in the morning or any of his daily tasks. It is getting very difficult for Akhila to get her son to be disciplined.
Akhila thought to herself, “I need to work out a plan to help him to be self-disciplined.” Repeated advice and warnings had not changed him.
Manu was back from school at 4 o’clock. Akhila asked him to finish his homework first. Manu as usual, ignored his mother and continued playing with his pet dog. Finally, with a lot of effort, the mother helped him complete his homework. Manu had his maths test the next day.
The next day, everything was usually expected and there was no effort from Akhila to wake up her son. The time was seven and Akhila had still made no effort to wake up Manu. The school bus honked and Akhila, unlike her usual self, asked the bus driver to leave.
Paragraph 1:
Manu finally woke up at around 9 o’clock.

A. To criticize Mr. Jafri for overuse. B. To show the massiveness of the artwork.
C. To make a comparison with other painters. D. To explain what Mr. Jafri used for painting.
6. Why did Mr. Abdoune pay more
A. Because he has been fond of charity.
B. Because the painting impressed him.
C. Because he wanted to help more children.
D. Because he didn’t want to separate the pieces.
7. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. A New Guinness World Record
B. An England Artist Achieved His Dream
C. Pandemic Inspires People On Their Paintings
D. World’s Largest Painting Sells For $62 Million
D 5. B 6. C 7. D

Jafri is a 44-year-old artist from England. As the COVID-19 spread and many countries went into lockdown, Mr. Jafri was in Dubai. Rather than feeling stuck because he was unable to move on, Mr. Jafri decided to take on a huge project that could “make a really big difference.”(Jafri先生是一位来自英国的44岁艺术家。随着COVID-19的传播,许多国家进入封锁状态,贾夫里正在迪拜。贾夫里没有因为无法前进而感到停滞不前,而是决定承担一个可能“产生巨大影响”的大项目。) 以及第二段第一、二句“He decided to create the world’s largest painting in a way that would involve people from around the world. He asked children to send him pictures showing how they were feeling during the pandemic”(他决定用一种让世界各地的人都参与进来的方式来创作世界上最大的画作。他让孩子们给他发照片,展示他们在大流行期间的感受)可知,他作画的动机是跟疫情封锁有关,他想要全世界的人参与进来表达在这期间的感受。故选D。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“It took over 1,000 paintbrushes and 6,300 liters of paint to create the painting.”(创作这幅画需要超过1000支画笔和6300升的颜料。)
根据最后一段倒数第二句“Knowing that the money would go to charity also helped Mr. Abdoune decide to pay more.”(知道这些钱将捐给慈善机构,也让阿卜杜恩决定支付更多的钱)可知,Mr.

A 9. B 10. D 11. C

根据前文“We know it can be hard to put your phone to bed before you sleep. (我们知道在上床睡觉前把手机放下是很困难的。)”提到上床睡觉前放下手机对于人们来说是不容易做到的,同时结合该句语境可推知,手机对睡眠是有影响的。因此,想改善睡眠,提高睡眠质量应是将手机放下,即划线单词所在句表达的含义。由此推知,短语“ditch your phone”应是“放下手机”含义,那么“ditch”应是“放下,搁置在一边”含义。故选A项。
根据第二段“Melatonin release in the evening helps you relax before bedtime. (晚上释放褪黑素可以帮助你在睡前放松。)”可知,夜间褪黑素的产生有利于人的睡眠,由此可推断出,褪黑素受到抑制会影响人的睡眠,从而使得人们的睡眠时间少于平时的睡眠时间。故选B项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段“Not only is it easy to set a wake-up time, the clock includes white noises and rain noises to help you sleep, plus a number of volume settings to pick what works best for you. (这款闹钟不仅可以很容易地设置起床时间,还能发出白噪音和雨声来帮助你入睡,还有很多音量设置,让你选择最适合自己的。)”可知,“the Sharp Dream Caster”可轻松设置起床时间,可有白噪音和雨声助眠功能,且可设置适合自己的音量,因此可知,推荐它是因为它有助于人的睡眠。故选D项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段内容“Take things a step further by avoiding using electronic devices. You can try reading a book (one made of paper), taking a bath or drinking a cup of chamomile tea. (更进一步,避免使用电子设备。你可以试着读一本书(纸做的),洗个澡或者喝杯洋甘菊茶。)”及后面所列举的事例可知,睡觉之前避免使用电子产品,可以看纸质书或洗个澡或喝杯洋甘菊茶,这些有助于睡眠。由此可推知,为了更好的睡眠,可以建立一个没有电子设备的就寝程序。故选C项。

A. It can help you keep healthy.
A 13. C 14. C 15. D

Manu, as usual, ignored his mother and continued playing with his pet dog.

Manu finally woke up at around 9 o’clock. He looked at the clock and ran to the kitchen, crying out, “Mom! Why didn’t you wake me up I am really late for school.” He couldn’t stop crying. “I have a maths test today and Madam Mangat will punish me if I miss her class and the test!” Madam Mangat was the strictest teacher in Manu’s school. “Mom, what should I do now Please help. I promise I will wake up every day on time.” Akhila could no longer see her son crying and said, “Just promise me one more thing that you will do your daily task on time without pestering you to do it.” “Sure Mom! I promise!” Akhila told him she would send him to school and Mrs. Mangat would give him another chance to take the test. Manu hugged his mother. “Mom! Thank you.”
Manu quickly got ready for school without any effort from his mother. On the way to the school, there was silence in the car but a smile on Akhila’s face. The scene the next day at their house was a little different. At 6, Akhila walked out of her room, only to find Manu packing his schoolbag! Everything ready, he went up to Akhila and took her hand, saying, “Mom, I will give the driver a surprise today.” Hearing the smile in his voice, Akhila nodded approvingly and kissed him on the forehead. That morning, no hurry, no pestering and pampering, no continuous honking. It was the first time that Manu had tasted the fruit of discipline. He would taste it every day!
