health. Then I’ll take action to achieve this goal by stopping eating unhealthy foods, etc.
M: Why do you gather some close friends together
W: It is important for me because I need support. I know I can’t do it on my own. Also it helps, because I am able to share my problems with them. And by telling other people “I really want to do this and I seek your help”, they can keep you honest, I suppose.
M: And why is it that most people do so badly at reaching goals
W: They lose focus. Everybody’s life is busy. There is so much happening in everybody’s life that what happens is that they might have a goal, and then something will get in the road of that.

In a gray box, I have a thick pile of love letters. I imagine about sharing them with a granddaughter when I’m 90. But my most treasured love letter is from one of my best friends. It’s a handwritten letter years ago when I was having trouble getting over a man. Her letter is the most romantic in my pile. It made no excuses. It simply let me know that I was loved.
Reflecting on her gift, and the dying art of handwritten letters in our age of emails and emoticons, I chose to conduct an experiment this Christmas: replacing presents with heartfelt, handwritten love letters for my family members.
In our digital era, most of us rarely take the time to share deeply considered thoughts and
emotions with the people in our lives. Handwriting captures the writer’s emotions, often preserved longer than digital exchanges. However, technology is taking over. First came typewriters and keyboards. Now a new brain-computer lets people type with their minds. What are we losing when we sacrifice the physical labor behind the written word We tend to value what we struggle for. Have we undervalued the human exchange of ideas
That day, I came across a letter my mom wrote to her parents when she was young. She seemed so comfortable with her parents. It was a relationship I didn’t have with her. I was inspired by my mother’s letter to her parents when I sat down to write my letter to her. I wanted her to know my love, and to close the crack that technology and culture had created between us. With each sentence, I was discovering new and deeper ways of seeing my mother, and making myself known to her in more thoughtful ways as well.
Eight single-space pages later, my hand was aching but I was done. It was only the first of my love letters, but it was already clear: What had begun as a fun project was in fact one of the most important undertakings of my life.
24.Why does the author mention her love letters in Paragraph 1
A.To show her grand charm as a young girl. B.To share them with one of her granddaughters.
C.To highlight the value of handwritten letters. D.To look back upon her romantic relationship.
25.How will technology probably affect us in the digital age
A.Making our interaction less emotional. B.Encouraging our thoughtful communication.
C.Saving our physical labor in conveying emotions. D.Increasing our effort in handwritten exchanges.
26.Why did the author handwrite a letter to her mother
A.To give her mother a big surprise. B.To answer her mother’s handwritten letter.
C.To bridge a communication gap. D.To make her mother feel more comfortable.
27.What did the author learn from her experiment
A.The irreplaceable bond of family members.
B.The tendency of information technology.
C.The expression of emotions in the digital age.
D.The power of handwritten correspondence.
【答案】24.C 25.A 26.C 27.D

Phonetic (语音的) information-the smallest sound elements of speech, typically represented by the alphabet-is considered by many linguists (语言学家) to be the foundation of language. Infants are thought to learn these small sound elements and add them together to make words. But a new study suggests that phonetic information is learnt too late and slowly for this to be the case. Instead, rhythmic information helps babies learn language by emphasizing the boundaries of individual words and is effective even in the first few months of life
Researchers from the University of Cambridge and Trinity College Dublin investigated babies' ability to process phonetic information during their first year. The study found that phonetic information wasn't successfully encoded until babies were seven months old, and was still rare for babies at 11 months old when they began to say their first words. A sister study has shown that rhythmic information was processed by babies at two months old -and individual differences predicted later language outcomes.
Professor Giovanni Di Liberto said, “This is the first evidence we have of how brain activity relates to phonetic information changes over time in response to continuous speech.” Previously, studies have relied on comparing the responses to nonsense syllables, like "bif" and “bof” instead.
“We believe that rhythmic information is the hidden glue underpinning the development of a well-functioning language system,” said Cambridge “Infants can use rhythmic information like a scaffold or skeleton to add phonetic information on to. For example, they might learn that the
rhythm pattern of English words is typically strong-weak, as in 'daddy' or 'mummy', with the stress on the first syllable. They can use this rhythm pattern to guess where one word ends and another begins when listening to natural speech.”
Goswami says that there is a long history in trying to explain dyslexia (阅读理解) and developmental language disorder in terms of phonetic problems, but the evidence doesn't add up. She believes that individual differences in children's language originate with rhythm.
28.What is the key to babies language learning according to the new study
A.Nonsense syllables. B.Phonetic information.
C.Rhythmic information. D.Parent-kid interaction.
29.What does the underlined phrase “add up” in the last paragraph probably mean
A.Exist. B.Expand.
C.Seem reasonable. D.Seem formal.
30.What does Giovanni Di Liberto think of the new study
A.It is meaningful.
B.It missed adult participants out.
C.It needs further investigation.
D.Its result proved the previous assumption.
31.What can be concluded from the study
A.It's better for parents to use baby talk.
B.Singing to babies may help them learn a language.
C.It's essential for babies to be exposed to phonetic information.
D.Dyslexia results from poor response to continuous speech.
【答案】28.C 29.C 30.A 31.B
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要讲述了婴儿学习语言的关键在于节奏信息,而非语音信息。
28.细节理解题。根据文章第一段“Instead, rhythmic information helps babies learn language by emphasizing the boundaries of individual words and is effective even in the first few months of life”(相反,节奏信息通过强调单词的边界帮助婴儿学习语言,甚至在生命的最初几个月就有效)可推知,新的研究认为婴儿学习语言的关键是节奏信息。故选C。
29.词句猜测题。根据文章最后一段“Goswami says that there is a long history in trying to explain dyslexia (阅读理解) and developmental language disorder in terms of phonetic problems, but the evidence doesn't add up. She believes that individual differences in children's language originate with rhythm”(Goswami说,有很长的历史试图用语音问题来解释阅读障碍和语言发展障碍,但证据并不add up。她认为,儿童语言的个体差异源于节奏)可推知,有很长的历史试图用语音问题来解释阅读障碍和语言发展障碍,但证据并不合理。故“add up”在此处的意思是“看起来合理”。故选C。
30.推理判断题。根据文章第三段“Professor Giovanni Di Liberto said, “This is the first evidence we have of how brain activity relates to phonetic information changes over time in response to continuous speech.””(Giovanni Di Liberto教授说,“这是我们首次得到的证据,说明大脑活动如何随着时间的推移与连续语音中的语音信息变化有关。”)可推知,Giovanni Di Liberto认为这项新研究是有意义的。故选A。
31.推理判断题。根据文章第一段“Instead, rhythmic information helps babies learn language by emphasizing the boundaries of individual words and is effective even in the first few months of life”(相反,节奏信息通过强调单词的边界帮助婴儿学习语言,甚至在生命的最初几个月就有效)可推知,对婴儿唱歌可能有助于他们学习语言,因为唱歌中的节奏信息可以帮助他们理解和学习语言。故选B。

In order to meet growing food production and energy needs in low-and middle-income countries, solar-powered groundwater irrigation (灌溉) is rapidly gaining ground. More than 500,000 solar pumps (泵) have been set up in south Asia over the last few years and a major expansion is planned across sub-Saharan Africa.
Dustin Garrick, professor in the School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability, along with an international team, examined the trend toward solar pumps as a clear opportunity for boosting agricultural yields and reducing poverty, but the opportunity comes with risks.
While replacing electric or gas pumps with solar-powered irrigation holds the promise of reducing carbon emissions (排放), it is not guaranteed. Farmers who have access to these pumps may expand production of crops or diversify into other activities, which are not emissions neutral. Solar pumps will increase groundwater pumping efficiency, which may be desirable in regions that support such increases, but this could worsen groundwater lessening in regions that are already stressed. The cheap clean energy of solar pumps may lead to increased groundwater development, without necessarily decreasing overall emissions.
Despite these challenges, the clean-energy boost can serve as a stimulus for positive change in water and energy management but will require enhanced regulation and planning in both low-and high-income settings. Garrick and his team advocate for improved data collection initiatives, with a shift from separated to integrated approaches. They suggest using technology to measure water pumping and collecting remotely sensed data to monitor land use changes. As well, regulatory improvements are crucial, with mounting limits for carbon emissions and groundwater lessening established at various levels.
With groundwater management already a difficult challenge, we must act fast to understand the implications of the clean energy boost and poverty reduction acts to avoid these gains being won away by wells running dry. The rapid adoption of solar irrigation intensifies the urgency, demanding adaptation from governments and institutions to sail through these complexities.
32.According to paragraph 3, there is a conflict between ________.
A.poor farmers and solar-powered irrigation B.human consumption and clean energy limits
C.crop diversity and crop production expansion D.pumping efficiency and groundwater exhaustion
33.What did Garrick and his team suggest for a positive change
A.Integrating data collection and regulation. B.Improving carbon emission monitoring.
C.Separating data for land use changes. D.Establishing groundwater levels.
34.What does the author propose the readers do
A.Perform as the authorities suggest. B.Act based on further understanding.
C.Quicken the adoption of solar irrigation. D.Challenge the groundwater management.
35.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.The Complexities of Adopting Solar Pumps

Helping Your Kids to Be Interested in Sports
Being active and moving is something that is so important for us all, especially for children. 36 However, some parents can feel shocked when they see that their child isn’t interested in sports. So how can you encourage them to have ago
It is such a good idea to lead by example when you are a parent. This is true for a variety of aspects, but especially forgetting children involved in sport. 37 So you need to be someone who is interested and active, if you want any hope of them doing so too. If you lay on the couch all day then they will just learn to do that too.
38 Although they can choose who they want to support, seeing your enthusiasm for a particular player or team can be just what is needed to start their journey. You could look for a team uniform store to get them a sports shirt with their name on for example, as well as see the team play at one of their games. 39
If something is dull, it will be hard for children to be enthusiastic about it. This will make them resent(讨厌) it, which is not a good thing for later in life. If they show particular skill and learn to play sport, then more practice and training can come in. 40 When they can enjoy what they do, they will only see it as something fun to do, rather than what we as adults might see it as, such as a chore to burn calories.
Whatever sport your child chooses to play, encourage them and make it fun, and then it will be something that they will want to carry on doing as they go about the rest of their lives.
A.They won’t be interested in sports if you’re not.
B.here are some other tips that you would share with them.
C.Share your enthusiasm and it will help to lighten a passion.
D.So think about ways that can get them to be active in the sports.
E.How active a child is will impact their overall health and learning.
F.Apart from leading by example, you could also share your favorite team.

Different countries have wildly different forms of greeting.
In the USA, when you pass by someone you know, a nod is acceptable, and you usually shake hands with someone you first meet. But in Latin countries, a firm handshake 56 (consider) rude. In my home country, Mauritius, when people meet, they usually kiss each other 57 the cheeks. This is also common in France, 58 the act is called faire la bise. However, this is not 59 universal rule.
During my first week in the USA, I kissed every single girl I met. My friends had to tell me that that was inappropriate, 60 (leave) me in great embarrassment. What is common here,
however, is for friends 61 (hug) each other – something I was not used to. Hugs always make me 62 (frighten) because I don’t really like that. This may seem strange since even kissing 63 (stranger) is normal in my country. Now that I think about it, I hate cheek-kissing as well.
Wouldn’t it be 64 (enjoy) to have a greeting code that is 65 (wide) acceptable I’m not saying we should start doing that, but we can surely do something to avoid misunderstanding.

Police chief Matthew Bruce’s son, Adam, came late into his lives, so he always spoiled him and never said no to him for anything. As Adam grew older, he began to take his parents’ love and concern for granted, as if it were permission for him to do whatever he pleased. There were certainly times when he was criticized for bad grades or sneaking out of the house, but that was limited to only minor blame. Adam thought that if he pretended to be an “ideal” son, he would have to face absolutely no blame from his parents. So he began to act like a good son in front of them while engaging in all sorts of wrongdoing behind their backs, such as breaking the law. However, Adam always got away with it.
One day, Adam was driving back from a party with his friend Freddie when he began over-speeding. Freddie warned him to slow down, but Adam didn’t listen. Adam’s driving worried Freddie. He asked Adam to slow down again, and when Adam didn’t, he grabbed the steering wheel himself, causing the car to slide off the road and ran into a tree on the side. Then they heard the alarm of a police car behind them. The car came to a stop in front of them, and a police officer approached them.
“I’ve been following your car for a while now, and I’m afraid I’ll have to take you to the station for speeding. May I have your driver’s license first ” the police officer said.
Freddie was scared. “Here’s my driver’s license, sir,” he said, offering it to the officer. Adam tried to explain that he was the police chief’s son, but the police officer turned a deaf ear to him. They drove him to the station, and when Adam stepped inside, he was surprised to see his father there. He had been called to the station for an urgent case.

He told Adam he would need to earn money himself to pay for the fine.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Adam felt no worries and thought he was out of trouble. He began begging his father to let him go and promised not to repeat the same mistake. At this point, Adam thought his father would talk about his case privately to him, and he’d get away with it as he always did, but his father wouldn’t let him off the hook this time. Bruce decided to teach him a lesson. He wanted his son to go to trial and be issued a fine.
He told Adam he would need to earn money himself to pay for the fine. In the end, Adam had to work a part-time job to pay off the fine. When Adam was finally freed from the fine, he didn’t stop working. After working hard for the money, he realized how hard it was to earn money and do something independently. He promised his parents that he would always obey them. Sometimes you need to be strict with your children to teach them a lesson. Bruce didn’t let Adam off the hook when he went against the traffic law. That experience changed Adam for the better. Adam had to pay for his mistakes, no matter how hard he tried to avoid it.

Reflecting on her gift, and the dying art of handwritten letters in our age of emails and emoticons, I chose to conduct an experiment this Christmas: replacing presents with heartfelt,
handwritten love letters for my family members.
In our digital era, most of us rarely take the time to share deeply considered thoughts and emotions with the people in our lives.

For example, they might learn that the rhythm pattern of English words is typically strong-weak, as in 'daddy' or 'mummy', with the stress on the first syllable.

B.Solar-Powered Irrigation: Farmers’ New Future
C.The Promise and Risks of Solar-Powered Irrigation
D.Balancing Clean Energy Boost and Poverty Reduction

G.However, the main message forgetting children into sport is to keep it fun.

What is common here, however, is for friends 61 (hug) each other – something I was not used to.
