After finishing my teaching for a school year, I thought that I should go back to Montreal,Quebec, my hometown for a visit. My main goal was to relax thinking about in advance the challenges of my retirement in the coming year.
Through my stay in Montreal, I met lots of Chinese who are struggling to succeed and then lead a better life in Canada.
Some travelled thousands of miles to get knowledge. When I spoke with some of them about the major barrier (障碍)they had to face after they arrived in Canada, they all talked about the two official languages of Canada. But I was impressed by their ability to express their ideas while switching between English and French.
Almost all of those people said they often felt homesick. They miss their families and friends. Though Montreal has lots of Chinese restaurants, they long for a home cooked meal.
I met some tourists who were trying to realize their childhood dreams of experiencing the life in a developed country. When I asked them if Montreal had lived up to their expectations, they hesitated. They said that reality never agrees with fantasies. However, they were glad to have the opportunity to visit Montreal and didn't regret taking the trip.
Not all the Chinese people I met were happy. I once met a young lady who met with a gentleman through the Internet. However,to her disappointment,he disappeared after he promised to marry her in Montreal.
I was served by another Chinese person who could not handle the challenges of studying in an English environment and ended up working in a restaurant with minimum pay.
Exploring different parts of the world, without any doubt, is an enriching experience. However, one should be realistic when it comes to leaving his hometown to set up a new life in a foreign country. One should take the time to examine the advantages and the shortcomings of the venture before they decide to chase an uncertain dream of achieving success or leading a better life.

Snowbirds are people who leave their homes when the temperature drops and head to warmer climates. They are mostly retirees (退休人员) and business owners who can afford to take the winter off. While the snow flies in the Northern states, they are enjoying golf, sailing and barbecues in mild temperatures in the South. Then, after winter passes, they return to their homes in the North.
Most snowbirds are away from Canada and the Northern states between the middle of October and the end of November. They pack up and head to Florida, Alabama, Texas, California, and all of the other Southern states. Some may even go as far as Australia or Italy to escape the cold winter weather. There are special communities for snowbirds in many areas. Snowbirds are also offered special discounts in some restaurants, hotels and area attractions. Several states even have special snowbird resorts (度假胜地). There are several online communities and local resources to help snowbirds get set in their seasonal homes.
Some snowbirds own homes both in the South and in the North. Both homes have everything they will need for their stay, minimizing the amount of packing necessary when moving from one to the other. Other snowbirds will rent apartments for their stay outside their home state.
RVs(房车), are a huge part of the snowbird lifestyle. RVs allow snowbirds to move from place to place on a whim (奇想), bringing everything they need with them. They spend nights in RV parks, large parking lots or anywhere else they choose to stay. RVs have beds, bathrooms, and most other modern conveniences at home. One day, when I was a freshman in high school, I saw a kid from my class walking home from school. His name was Kyle. It looked like he was carrying all of his books, and I thought to myself, “Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday He must really be a nerd.”
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him. They ran right up to him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping (绊倒) him so he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
Then he looked up, and I saw the terrible sadness in his eyes. So, I ran to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, I saw tears in his eyes. As I handed him his glasses, I said, “Those guys are jerks. They really should get a life.” He looked at me and said, “Hey, thanks!” There was a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude. I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived. It turned out he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before. He said he had been to a private school before now. We talked all the way home, and I carried his books.
He turned out to be a pretty cool kid. We stayed together all the weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him. Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.
Kyle was the valedictorian (致告别辞的最优生) of our class and he had to prepare a speech for graduation. On graduation day, I could see that he was nervous about his speech. So, I said, “Hey, big guy, you’ll be great!” He looked at me with one of those looks, and smiled. “Thanks,” he said. He cleared his throat, and began.

第二节(满分25分)
He told the story of the first day we met. I just looked at my friend with disbelief. He had planned to kill himself over the weekend and was carrying his stuff home. He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker, so his mum wouldn’t have to do it later. He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile. “Thankfully, I was saved. My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable thing.”
I heard the sigh go through the crowd. This handsome, popular boy was telling us all about his weakest moment. I saw his mum and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile. Not until that moment did I realise its depth. Never underestimate the power of your actions. With one small gesture you can change a person’s life. For better or for worse, we are put in each other’s lives to impact one another in some way.
