Amy was a dear little girl, but she was always wasting time getting prepared to do her tasks, instead of doing them at once as she should do.
In the village, Mr Thornton kept a store where he sold fruits of all kinds, including berries when in season. One morning he said to Amy, “Well, Amy, I noticed some fine, ripe blackberries on Mr Green’s farm today. He said that anybody was welcome to them. I will pay you 13 cents a kilogram for all you pick for me.”
Amy was excited about the thought of making some money to help her mom, so she quickly ran home to get a basket to hold the berries. Then she thought she would like to know how much money she would get if she picked five kilograms. After finding out that she would get 65 cents, she started to dream big, “Supposing I should pick a dozen kilograms, how much should I make then ”
“Dear me,” she exclaimed, after calculating a while, “I should make a dollar and fifty-six cents!”
It took her some time to dream bigger, and then it was so near lunchtime that she had to stay at home until the afternoon.
As soon as lunch was over, she took her basket and hurried to the farm. Some boys had been there before lunch, and all the ripe blackberries were picked. Whenever photographer Casey Ryan heads into the wilderness, he brings along his drone (无人驾驶飞机)
to photograph from a bird's eye view. On a recent journey to the Cascade Mountain Range in Oregon, Casey was driving through the Willamette National Forest when he came across a stranger whose vehicle was stuck (车辆被卡住). He had been stuck there for days, so Casey volunteered to help him get his car out. Unluckily, Casey got his own vehicle stuck in a hole while trying to help, leaving both people stuck with no mobile phone service for miles around.
Casey says his mind is always working to find creative solutions to problems. He immediately judged the situation and realized that in order to get mobile phone service, he needed to get higher up the mountain. He remembered a movie he had seen recently in which a character used a drone to lift his phone high enough to catch a signal, so he took out his device and got to work.
He attached (使固定)his mobile phone to his drone. Then, he typed a series of messages to his wife. He told her where he was located in the park. And he then held his breath as he tried to launch the now-heavy drone. He got it going and shipped it up to the sky. The drone soared several hundred feet into the air. Somewhere up there over the tall trees, the phone picked up a signal! All of Casey's texts were sent. They were saved!
Rescuers arrived and saved both Casey and the other driver. People are calling him a "real-life MacGyver", but he‘s just thankful to be out of the woods. Who knows, maybe future drones will have built-in emergency features thanks to this photographer's creativity. We would totally buy a phone drone!
5. What did Casey do when he met a stranger in the forest
A. He tried to pull his car out. B. He lent his mobile phone to him.
C. He offered to take him to Oregon. D. He shared his photographs with him.

A. Past experience. B. A scene from a movie.
C. A suggestion from a stranger. D. Knowledge of wilderness survival.
7. What does the underlined word "soared" in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Broke. B. Shook. C. Raised. D. Disappeared.
8. What makes people compare Casey to MacGyver
A. His interest in new tech no logy. B. His special photographic methods.
C. His creative problem-solving skills. D. His pleasure to help people in need.

I sent a message to my sister at 12:30 p.m. during my lunch to ask her about my father’s progress. He was
having his second knee surgery (手术) and my expectations were the same as the last successful surgery. My brother picked me up from school and we headed for the hospital.
★ , my first question was “How is he doing ”. My father was connected to a breathing machine and his face was swollen (肿). I tried my best not to cry because I was supposed to explain to him what was happening as the nurses did not speak Spanish. I had never seen my father this way. He looked so weak and different from the strong man I knew. I asked him how he was feeling and he said he was fine. I returned to the hall and I realized that my hero, best friend, and loved one in life was in a dangerous state and at that point anything could happen.
I recalled what happened when I was a child. “I’m going to the store.” he always said. Of course that was my reason to follow him. We would walk to the car, and sometimes if I was lucky, I was able to sit in the front seat. We would arrive at the store and he always said, “Get whatever you want and something for Ana.” Ana is my sister. My dad and I were best friends. He never showed preference with his children, but I just always happened to follow him. It was okay for me to cry when I wanted something because I was his youngest girl and he couldn’t say no to me.
My father spent his whole life giving us the best. Growing up does not necessarily mean that one must keep oneself away from his parents because it is childish. It is time to take action and value the feelings because it is the right thing to do. Life gives us chances to value what is the most important in life.

A. Her father likes her the most.
B. She was never refused by her father.
C. She didn’t like her family and left very early.
D. She followed her father a lot when she was a child.
8. The passage mainly wants to tell us to ________.

Back in New York, I am fighting fires as the assistant captain (副队长) of a volunteer fire company.
I still remember my first fire. I was the second volunteer on the scene. The captain was talking with the homeowner, who was surely having one of the worst days of her life. At midnight, she was standing outside in the pouring rain, under an umbrella, barefoot while her house was in flames (在燃烧中).
The other volunteer, who had arrived just before me, was asked to go inside and save the homeowner’s dog. The captain then waved me over. He said, “Bezos, I need you to go upstairs past the fire, and get this woman a pair of shoes.” So, not exactly what I was hoping for, but off I went—up the stairs, down the hall, past the “real” firefighters, who were pretty much done putting out the fire at this point, into the master bedroom to get a pair of shoes.
Now I know what you’re thinking, but I’m no hero. (Laughter) I carried the shoes downstairs where I met the other volunteer with the precious dog. We took our treasures outside to the homeowner, where, not surprisingly, his received much more attention than mine.
A few weeks later, the company received a letter from the homeowner thanking us for saving her home. The
act of kindness she noted above all others was that someone had even gotten her a pair of shoes.
Here, I would offer this reminder: don’t wait. Don’t wait until you make your first million to make a difference in somebody’s life. If you have something to give, give it now.
Not every day is going to offer us a chance to save somebody’s life, but every day offers us an opportunity to affect one. So get in the game. Save the shoes.

The Hugo (雨果) Awards, the world’s top science fiction awards, were announced on the night of Oct 21, 2023. Chinese writer Hai Ya’s book The Space-Time Painter won the Hugo Award for Best Novelette. He became the third Chinese writer to win a Hugo award after Liu Cixin in 2015 and Hao Jingfang in 2016.
When creating The Space-Time Painter, Hai Ya drew his idea from a famous painting by Wang Ximeng from the Song Dynasty (960-1279). Based on Wang, Hai Ya created a painter named Zhao Xemena. After many hard times, Zhao’s mind leaves his body and enters a space where a modern policeman is trying to solve a case about an ancient painting.
Hai Ya’s story with science fiction began in his childhood. “When I was a child, the bookstore in my hometown helped create a beautiful garden in my mind that belonged to me only. In it, science fiction offered the most beautiful ‘flowers’. Science fiction opened up a new world to him as a kid,” said Hai Ya.
Hai Ya’s works are a mix of history and science fiction. These two styles seem opposite. One looks back at the past, and the other faces the future. However, in Hai Ya’s works, they find a perfect balance.
“If we can only imagine the future and things in space like rockets, it will only limit our imagination. I don’t think history is something completely in the past. It is flowing, and we can look forward to the future by looking back at history. History is also part of our future,” Hai Ya said.
Science fiction lovers in China feel inspired (激发) by Hai Ya. More Chinese writers today are trying to mix traditional culture with modern stories. Hai Ya believes that it is not a choice but a natural process (过程). “Our history and culture have universal values (普世价值) that can touch everyone,” he said.
13. What do we know about The Space-Time Painter

A. History is opposite to the future.
B. History can help us look forward to our future.
C. History offers us everything to shape our future.

16. What can we learn from the passage

When talking about new technology, you will probably think of artificial intelligence (AI). But have you heard of AI chips (芯片) Companies around the world that develop AI need this kind of chip, making it very important in the technology field.
To learn about AI chips, we first need to talk about graphics cards (显卡). They are a kind of computer chip that makes images (图像) look better and clearer. The main part of a graphics card is the GPU, or graphics processing unit (图形处理器). It was developed by NVIDIA in the late 1990s. Although it was first made for video games, it has amazing computing power (计算能力).
For traditional computers, their CPU (central processing unit) processes one piece of data at a time. But a GPU can process many pieces of data at once. This is why gamers buy GPUs to have a better video game experience.
However, as technology developed, GPU’s real superpower turned out to be its use in training AI models. So, AI chips were built based on GPUs. AI companies such as OpenAI and Google use AI chips to speed up and improve the way their AI “learns” things. These chips are especially useful for making large language models perform better, such as the well-known ChatGPT. With their excellent ability to deal with a lot of data at once, there’s no telling how far they’ll go.
For us, if we have AI chips in our smartphones , data processing can happen on the phone rather than in the cloud. This makes phones work faster, keep information safer, and use less energy.

Whenever photographer Casey Ryan heads into the wilderness, he brings along his drone (无人驾驶飞机)to photograph from a bird's eye view.
He
remembered a movie he had seen recently in which a character used a drone to lift his phone high enough to catch a signal, so he took out his device and got to work.

One day, two boys were fighting badly over a toy and they were angry with each other. Their father saw this, pulled them apart, and said, “Do you know how hunters used to catch monkeys ” “No.” The two boys replied confusedly.
“They would place a glass jar (罐子) with a small neck on the ground. Then, inside the jar, they would put the monkeys’ favorite food.” The father said, “The hunters would step back, hiding somewhere, waiting for monkeys to come over.” As the children listened carefully, the father went on, “When a monkey found the jar, it would reach inside, take the food, and try to pull it out. But here was the clever part: the small neck of the jar
stopped the monkey from getting its hand out without giving up the food. No matter how hard the monkey pulled, it couldn’t free its hand without letting go of the food.”
Hearing this, one of the children asked curiously, “What happened next, Dad Did the monkey let go of the food ”
In a gentle voice, the father said, “No. The monkey always refused to let go. It held onto the food, never giving up. Then the hunters would come over and catch the monkey. Now do you get the story ”
“We think we do. We should let go of the toy and never fight over it.” With big smiles on their faces, the two boys both answered.
“Yes, my little sons, and also it’s more than that. In life, you must choose your battles(战斗)wisely. Know when to give up, when to move on, and when to let go of whatever’s holding you back. Just like the monkey, sometimes, it’s better to give up and find a better way to reach your dreams.”

I sent a message to my sister at 12:30 p.m. during my lunch to ask her about my father’s progress. He was having his second knee surgery (手术) and my expectations were the same as the last successful surgery. My brother picked me up from school and we headed for the hospital.
★ , my first question was “How is he doing ”. My father was connected to a breathing machine and his face
was swollen (肿).

8. The passage mainly wants to tell us to ________.
A. grow up independently B. value the most important in life
C. ask for everything we like D. care about our parents’ health

The act of kindness she noted above all others was that someone had even gotten her a pair of shoes.

B. Bezos considers himself a real hero after the fire.
C. Bezos got more attention than the dog as they came back.
D. Bezos disagrees with saving tiny things from fires.
8. What message does Bezos express from his experience
A. Don’t try to affect anybody until you are rich.
B. Try to make a difference, however big or small.
C. Every day presents an opportunity to make great changes.
D. Being a volunteer is more like taking part in a game.

In recent years, many schools in China have had a high-tech makeover. They have turned from using “old-school” multimedia (多媒体的) tools to AI and big data to add value to student learning and life on campus (校园).
At the Tianjin Eco-City School Affiliated to Beijing Normal University, the Chinese tech company iFlytek’s smart campus system (系统) makes learning a fun experience. In aerospace (航天) classes, students use VR glasses to learn about what’s inside a rocket and how it is launched (发射) in a computer game. Also, in swimming classes, “by wearing smart earphones, children can get real-time instructions (指令) from the coach under the water. This makes training safer,” Li Rui, the school’s vice-principal, told CCTV.
For PE classes, Yuwen School in Wuhu, Anhui, has used self-testing tools with AI visual analysis (视觉分析) technology for activities such as standing long jump, sit-ups and shot put (推铅球). With facial recognition (面部识别) technology, students can get voice reports and results on how they did right after each exercise.
“Before, when I threw the shot put, the teacher had to use a ruler to measure how far it went. Now, the results just show up on their own. You can also see which parts of your exercise need improvement,” Wu Shengguo from the school told Dajiang Evening News.

A. History is opposite to the future.
B. History can help us look forward to our future.
C. History offers us everything to shape our future.

①Open AI has introduced a new technology that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to create high-quality videos from text descriptions.
②The company showed a few short, vivid and realistic videos, including mammoths (猛犸象) moving forward in a snowy field and people doing everyday things like reading a book or walking down a city street.
③Open AI calls the new system Sora. “Sora is able to generate complex scenes with different kinds of characters, specific types of motion, and correct and true details of the subject and background based on simple text prompts (提示语),” the ChatGPT makers said.
④The new tool isn’t the first of its kind. Other companies, including Google, Meta and AI start-up Runway, have built their own text-to-video AI models. But AI analysts (分析员) said the length and quality of Sora videos went beyond expectation and was outstanding in all of the models.
⑤Sora will first be available to a small group of artists and filmmakers as well as researchers who will try to find out what can be improved about it.
