江苏省2024年中考英语专题训练:阅读选择
Betty wanted to lead the way back to camp and went on talking cheerfully, asking different kinds of questions about plants and wildlife.
As we walked about halfway down the hillside, Betty fell over a stone. I ran up to where she tripped (绊倒).
Suddenly, I saw a bear about ten feet up on a huge rock watching me. It was making a long deep angry sound.
I stood perfectly still, holding my breath, wondering what to do next. Betty was crying down below. I couldn’t shout to her to be quiet, or the bear might attack me.
Then, remembering Dad’s words, I slowly dropped my backpack and took off my T-shirt. With the pack on one arm and the T-shirt on the other, trying to look as wide and big as I could. Carefully I moved away down the hillside toward Betty, keeping my eyes on the bear.
“Betty,” I called. “Stop crying. Get up slowly and catch my belt. We’re going down the hill and there’s a bear at the top.” We moved quietly and slowly down the hill. I was so nervous that I was in sweat (汗水). Once back to the forest, I removed the sweat from my face with my T-shirt before putting it on, and looked at Betty. She had a few small cuts, but nothing serious.
I pulled out the map. The camp ground was on the other side of the hill. We had hiked for miles before we finally made our way back to the camp.
Dad saw me first.
“Where have you been ” he shouted. “We were so worried,” Mother cried.
“Mommy, you didn’t have to worry. Brother Eric is really smart,” Betty said. I caught Dad’s eyes. He smiled with satisfaction. At that moment, I realized I was a big brother.

Do you have braces (牙箍) If not, you probably know some classmates who do. Even if you don’t have braces right now, you might need them one day.
Braces are a way of improving how teeth look and how they work. The metal wires (金属线) work by putting pressure on the teeth to slowly move them in the right direction. The rubber bands (橡皮筋) help to change the alignment (排列) of your teeth. Working together, the wires and rubber bands straighten (矫正) your teeth and line them up.
Different kids have different feelings about braces. Some can’t wait to get them because they know that they’ll improve their smile. Others worry about how braces will change how they look. Many are afraid of being uncomfortable.
It’s okay to have these worries, but kids who get braces often find they have no reason to worry. Not all teeth grow straight, and this is natural. But braces can help straighten or move teeth so that they can do their jobs as well as possible.
Years ago, braces were made of thick metal that was very easy to notice. Today, they look much better.
Sometimes, you can get braces that go on the back of your teeth. So braces aren’t as noticeable today as they once were.
Most kids have to wear braces for only a couple of years or so. After the braces are taken off, they may have to wear a retainer (保持器) for a while. This makes sure the teeth don’t go back to where they had been before. With the help of a retainer, they will be able to throw the retainer away and smile about it!

Social media (社交媒体) is certainly an interesting place to learn others’ opinions. You can read everything from strange ideas to true facts. But when you are spending time online and reading so many opinions, it’s quite possible that you’ll sometimes see someone write something that you strongly disagree with.
In fact, you might feel so strongly that you feel like you should reply to this person at once. You might do some research, find some facts of your own and reply to what they’re written. You finish writing it out, click (点击) “Post” and win the argument!
Except that it’s not really much of a victory. Most people don’t like it when other people disagree with their ideas, especially online strangers. It’s unlikely that they will change their opinion just because you argued with them. In fact, it’s possible that you made them feel more confident that they’re correct.
And the thing is, when you get in these kinds of fights online, it slowly influences you. You might not know it at first, but the argument that you take part in can actually have a bad effect on your mood (心情). If you argue often, you start to enjoy arguing and then end up doing it even more. It’s a dangerous cycle.
I guess the best thing to do is to tell yourself that most arguments aren’t worth it. There are much better and more interesting things to do, whether online or in real life.
20.How does the writer feel about social media

A.Argue until you find the truth.
B.Find something better to do instead of arguing.
C.Try to communicate in real life instead of online.
D.Don’t spend time discussing problems with strangers.
When babies are hungry, they will cry to show their feelings. When children and grown-ups are sad, they may cry to feel better. However, some people think crying is a bad thing because it may be bad for their health. In fact, it is healthy to have some tears. According to the studies, some health problems have something to do with not crying enough. Sometimes people need to cry more because it helps them to get well.
Different cultures have different ideas about crying. The people in Indonesia think crying—unless done by a person who has lost a close friend—is unhealthy, causing health problems. In some other cultures, people cry together usually when they are afraid of something and in times of sadness. Here are two interesting studies about crying.
A study of 5,000 people in 35 countries made by Professor (教授) Ad Vingerhoets found that women usually cried between 30 and 64 times a year, and men usually cried 6 to 17 times a year. Vingerhoets thinks that women’s higher prolactin levels (催乳素水平) may cause women to cry more. Prolactin levels are higher in pregnancy (怀孕) .
According to another study, when 150 women were watching the film Steel Magnolias, scientists found 22 percent of them cried and the others didn’t. Those who cried felt more sadness for a long time. The study said crying can make people sadder, and a took people longer to get well.
Crying may make people feel better only if it helps with their problems. Studies show comfort from one person does make people feel that crying is a good idea. So next time you don’t feel good, you can talk with your friend and cry out to make yourself feel better!
