During the journey, he learned many good skills, such as driving away wild animals and finding good places to set up camp. And he had a larger hiking plan: to walk from Xinjiang to Beijing alone.
“I shared the plan with my brother one night and my brother

On February 7, 2023, Abdusamat began this journey with his dog,

Many Chinese expressions include words about directions such as
“dong (east)”, “xi (west)”, “zuo (left)” and “you (right)”. For example, we
say “mai dongxi” when we talk about shopping. Apart from the literal (字面上的) meaning, what else is lying behind these words
Up or down
We use shang cesuo to mean “going to the bathroom” and xia chufang
to mean “going to the kitchen”. What’s the origin (渊源)
(18) The gate (大门) of the house would face south,
with the bathroom in the northeast of the house and the kitchen in the
southeastern part.
On maps, north is usually at the top, while south is at the bottom.
(19) So people would say they were going “up” to the
bathroom and “down” to the kitchen.
Left or right
In Chinese, we say “yijian xiangzuo” when having different opinions.
Why is it not yijian xiangyou
Most people today are right-handed. They feel uncomfortable when
they see someone using the left hand to write or use chopsticks (筷子). This was true in old times as well. (20)
East and west
When going shopping, Chinese people say “mai dongxi”, instead of
“mai nanbei”. Why
A commonly accepted idea is that in the Tang Dynasty, there were
two popular markets in Chang’an. (21) When shopping, people usually went to the East Market first, and then went to the West Market. As time went by, people started to describe shopping as mai dongxi.
A. What is the meaning of pangmen zuodao
B. In ancient times, Chinese houses were laid out in a certain way.
C. One was called the East Market, and the other the West Market.
D. In Chinese, we talk about “the north” as shang and “the south” as xia.
E. So, “left” was used to mean “being different”, such as in yijian
xiangzuo.
阅读D部分的材料,将22-26小题中五条通过礼貌地提出请求并成
功获得帮助的建议与A-E五个标题进行匹配。
D
Everyone may be in a situation where they need some help. It seems
to be difficult to ask for help. Don’t worry! Here are some ways to help youmake a polite request and receive help successfully.
(22)
Usually, if you don’t ask for help, you won’t receive it. So, when you
need help, just say it right away. This is the first step in getting the help you need. Don’t feel scared that you’ll be turned down. People are always ready to offer help.
(23)
Don’t ask someone for help when they are busy. If you’re not sure
whether it is a good time, just ask. You can say, “I’d love to ask for your
help with something. Are you free now ”
(24)
People aren’t mind readers. You should clearly tell others what kind of help you need. Instead of saying to your classmate, “I’m confused (困惑的). What should I do ”, you can say, “I don’t know how to solve the 5th problem. Could you please help me with it ”
(25)
Asking for help is not something to be ashamed (羞愧的) of. So, when
you ask for help, don’t say things like, “I’m so stupid. I’ll never learn it well.” Instead, say, “It is difficult, but I know I can do it. Would you mind showing me another example ”
(26)
Sometimes the help you get might not be what you expected. It doesn’t
matter. Don’t be afraid to ask more people for help. Keep asking until you get the help you need.
A. Speak up
B. Never give up
C. Be exact and clear
D. Choose the right time
E. Never put yourself down

I arrived in China a few months ago. Like every other foreigner, I have
to face a few “culture shocks (文化冲击)”. I would like to share a few of
such culture shocks.
It is known to all that China has a large population, but I was still
shocked when I stepped into public (公众的) areas and saw so many people.
They at first looked almost the same, all dark haired with dark eyes.
The next on my list is the language problem. When I decided to go to
China, the first thought that came to my mind was how to communicate with others. Although many Chinese are very interested in the English language, they don’t speak it often. Luckily, I am always able to find help.
The next one is my favorite one. China is famous for its delicious
food. I can find food stalls (摊位) easily. They are everywhere. Honestly,
I have never seen a food stall empty in China no matter what is being sold
there.
However, no matter what a foreigner goes through, life in China can
be a total adventure (探险). But one thing is certain that the Chinese are
the most helpful and the most sweet-natured people. Whenever I meet with
difficulty, I am sure to get a helping hand from the strangers to solve my
problem.
