When I was young, I loved and really did well in drawing and art. I won awards, got constant attention, and even saw my face in the newspaper and on television because of my natural ability to draw.
Most people who happen to come across something that they are good at are encouraged to take it and run with it. Of course, my life was no different. From teachers, to principals, to family members, everyone seemed to have a ton of advice to give me in regard to art.
All the while, my true desire was writing. I entered poetry, essay and short-story contests and lost all. It was such a contrast from my artistic competition experience! It was so bad that I had a good friend who told me once, “If you are so good at drawing, why do you even care about writing Stick to drawing!”
Though well intended, eighteen years later I’m glad I didn’t take his words to heart. Years went by with me still writing and still constantly entering contests. It was not until my first year in college that I finally got honorable mention in a poetry contest. As a writer, I’ve truly grown.
I’m sure there are things in your life that are challenging and yet, rewarding. Endurance(忍耐), especially when it comes to things you truly love is essential. Take some time to devote some more energy to the thing that didn’t come easy and see what happens.

New scientific research has found that attending live sporting events improves levels of well-being and reduces feelings of loneliness. The study used data from 7,209 adults, aged 16–85, living in England who joined in the Taking Part Survey, carried out by the British Government.
The study found that attending sporting events results in higher scores of two major aspects of subjective well-being — life satisfaction and a sense of “life being worthwhile” — as well as lower levels of loneliness.
Nowadays many initiatives(倡议) promote the benefits of physical participation in sport, but the researchers believe that watching live sporting events can also offer an accessible and effective public health tool for improving well-being and reducing loneliness.
Lead author Dr. Helen Keyes said, “Previous research has focused on specific sports or small population samples, such as college students in the United States. Ours is the first study to look at the benefits of attending any sporting event across an adult population, and therefore our findings could be useful for shaping future public health strategies, such as offering reduced ticket prices for certain groups.”
“The live events covered by the survey ranged from free amateur events to Premier League football matches. Therefore, further research needs to be done to see whether these benefits are more noticeable for high level sport.”
“However, we do know that watching live sport of all kinds provides many opportunities for social interaction and this helps to establish group identity and belonging, which in turn reduces loneliness and makes a difference to levels of well-being.”
9. The new research focused on whether attending live sporting events _____________.
A. benefits people of different ages B. results in higher scores of study
C. improves levels of happiness D. reduces the harm of working alone
10. We know that Dr. Helen Keyes and her team are the first to _____________.
A. promote the benefits of physical participation in sport
B. believe watching live sporting events helps reduce pressure
C. offer reduced ticket prices for a certain group of people
D. study how attending sporting events benefits adults
11. What does the underlined word “noticeable” mean in Paragraph 5
A. Easy to see. B. Hard to change. C. Possible to lose. D. True to believe.
12. What does Dr. Helen Keyes think of their findings
A. Useless. B. Helpful. C. Funny. D. Tiring.

Ways to Cut Your Carbon Footprint
Our carbon footprint, which drives more global warming, is connected with everything we produce, eat and buy. There are dozens of things we can do to reduce it.
13
About one-third of all food gets wasted every year. Producing food that won’t be eaten wastes valuable resources, including energy. It also creates a lot of greenhouse gases. If we don’t buy what we don’t need, we could cut our food carbon footprint by 12 percent.
14
People who use traditional vehicles can make up the largest part of carbon footprint. That’s why people should walk more, ride bikes or take public transportation. If you use your car, consider an electric vehicle (EV). Once they hit the roads, EVs don’t emit(排放) planet-warming gases.
15
Everything we buy also contributes to our carbon footprint. So a key way to lessen the footprint is to buy fewer new things. Shopping for the second-hand goods cuts much pollution. Next best is to extend the life of your products. Recycle wherever you can.
A. Buy less new stuffB. Reduce food wasteC. Eat plant-based foodsD. Green your travel

第二节 情景作文
Benefits of Taking Regular Exercise
Nowadays, more and more people, especially teenagers, are aware that it is important and necessary to take regular exercise. When we do regular exercise, there are many benefits that make us feel better and healthier.
First, doing exercises like running or playing soccer helps us stay energetic all day long. This is great because it means we can study better in school and still have fun playing after homework. Another good thing about exercising is that it helps our bodies fight off germs. Our immune system gets stronger, and this means we do not get sick easily. Also, when we exercise, we burn calories and this helps build our muscles and keep us fit. At night, I sleep very well because my body feels relaxed and tired in a good way. Sometimes, I use my free time to go hiking with my family. This is good because it does not let us waste time doing nothing. It also brings us closer to nature, which is beautiful and peaceful.
In conclusion, regular exercise is really good for everyone. It keeps us healthy, strong, and happy. I love being active, and I think everyone should try to exercise every day!
