Most people can't live to 100. Those who do live so long can hardly walk, let alone take part in any activities. A few people, however, take part in dangerous activities even though they are more than 100 years old﹣ They keep going and going! There is a great grandmother who likes challenging herself although she is 101 years old this year.
Mary Hardison believes that people should always be cheerful and more importantly, take on all kinds of adventures while they physically still can. So, instead of celebrating her 101st birthday with a boring party, she decided to go paragliding(滑翔跳伞)﹣ an idea she got from her 75﹣year﹣old son who recently took it up as a hobby.
So on her birthday, cheered on by her big family, she tied herself up together with expert instructor Kevin Hintze, and jumped down fearlessly from the sky near her home in Ogden, Utah. And, it was not just a simple jump either. According to Kevin Hintze, the grandmother encouraged him to turn around, as they made their way down.
This is not the first time that Mary has done something "wild" and "crazy". For her 90th birthday she rode all the adult rides at Disneyland. And, she is not done yet﹣ For her 102nd birthday she hopes to go down the 3,000 feet Alpine Slide at Utah's Park City Mountain Resort!
Not surprisingly, this great action has made Mary Hardison very famous and also earned her a place in the Guinness World Records where she broke a 2007 record set by a 100﹣year﹣old British woman. What an amazing lady!

Everyone loves to jump into the cool water of a swimming pool to beat the summer heat. Swimming is also one of the best ways to relax after a long week at work and even seen as a wonderful way to exercise. Swimming can help us lose weight. It is also believed to make the body strong. However, do you know anything about the history of swimming
The earlier recording of swimming dates back to 7,000 years ago. The Stone Age painting clearly showed that swimming was practised at that time. What’s more, many historic books gave written records of swimming. Swimming became popular in the Middle Ages.
In the 1800s, many swimming associations (协会) were set up. These associations organised swimming competitions. In fact, there have been records of swimming clubs which were set up in countries like the US, England, France and Germany during that time. England is believed to be the first modern society to consider swimming as a sport. The National Swimming Society in England organised swimming competitions that were held in London’s six pools. Mathew Webb’s swim across the English Channel further increased the sport’s popularity. Later in 1886, a new association, the Amateur Swimming Association of Great Britain, was set up, which made swimming even more popular.
As swimming became popular during the 1800s, swimming appeared in the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. During this time, the Olympic Games were a sports festival for men with the 100 m and 1,500 m freestyle swimming held in open water. There were only four swimming events. Three of them were freestyle.
The developer of the modern Olympic Games, Baron Pierre De Coubertin believed that women were not brawny enough to take part in such a competitive sport, which requires a lot of physical power. It was only in the 1912 Olympic Games that women swimmers appeared.

Are you preparing for a big test If so, you may want to go playing some basketball in between hitting the books. Doctors are starting to find more and more information that suggests a connection between exercise and brain development. Judy Cameron, a scientist at Oregon Health and Science University, studies brain development. According to her research, it seems that exercise can make blood vessels (血管), including those in the brain, stronger and more fully developed. Dr Cameron is sure that this allows people who exercise to have a clearer and more active mind. As she says, “while we already know that exercise is good for the heart, exercise can actually cause physical changes in the brain.”
The effects of exercise on brain development can even be seen in babies. Babies who do activities that require a lot of movement and physical activity show greater brain development than babies who are less physically active. Even a little movement can show big results. Margaret Barnes, a scientist, also believes in the importance of exercise. She thinks that many learning disabilities that children have in primary school or high school can result from a lack of movement as babies. “Babies need movement that encourages and excites their five senses. They need to set up a connection between motion and memory. In this way, as they get older, children will begin to connect physical activity with higher learning,” says Margaret.
Older people can develop their brains as well. Cornell University studied a group of seniors who have a short term memory increase of up to 40 percent after exercising just three hours a week. The exercise does not have to be very difficult, but it does have to increase the heart rate. Also, just like the motion for babies, exercise for older people should not be too simple. Learning some new skills or actions, such as with yoga or tai chi helps to open up memory paths in the brain that may not have been used for a long time. For most people, any type of physical activity that increases the heart rate is helpful. The main aim is to increase the brain's flow of blood. And your brain can benefit from as little as two to three hours of exercise a week.
12.What is the connection between exercise and brain development
A. Exercise helps make our blood vessels.
B. Physical exercise helps us think better.
C. Exercise prevents us having brain diseases.
D. More physical exercises enlarge our brains.
13.How can exercise affect babies
A. Whether they are excited or not depends on movements.
B. A lack of movement results from their learning disabilities.
C. The more frequently they move, the cleverer they become.
D. The more activities they do, the greater their brains develop.
14.Why is yoga suggested for seniors
A. It can be done in groups.
B. It decreases the heart rate.
C. It includes learning new actions.
D. It helps them memorize quicker.
15.What is the smallest amount of exercise required to gain any benefit
A. 3 hours per week. B. 4.2 hours per week.
C. 1 hour per day. D. 40 hours per month.
D

As a general rule, assign (分配) at least one hour to each subject. 18 By doing this, you will be able to know more easily how long you need for each topic.
Schedule study breaks.
When you have listed all of your tasks and made a schedule, you should organize study breaks. 19 This will give your eyes some time to rest, and yourself a chance to go to the bathroom or have some coffee.Scheduled breaks will reduce the need for you to interrupt yourself to the lowest level during the study session.
Put your tasks in order of importance.
20 Just in case you run out of time to study,or if you think you do not have enough time to cover all topics, you should study in an order.
A.Each break may take about 15 minutes every two hours.
B.Learn to arrange the subjects in order of importance.

Tim recently graduated from the university and was looking for a job. After searching on the Internet,he found out that a famous online business company is recruiting a new office manager. Many candidates applied for the entry exam, but only one would be accepted in the end.
Tim noticed the resumes (简历) of other candidates and was surprised to see that some of them held a Master’s Degree or even a Doctor’s Degree. But Tim was only a Bachelor, and barely met the lowest requirement of the diploma. Tim felt a bit frustrated because he had no advantage over other candidates who were excellent students.
All the candidates entered the exam hall after handing up their resumes.Tim scanned through the pages of the test paper and found out that the questions were very difficult for him.Tim tried to calm down and focus on the questions themselves instead of their difficulty level. He started with the easiest ones and moved on to the more difficult ones slowly.
There were two invigilators(监考人) in the hall, one of them was tall and thin, while the other invigilator was of the opposite: he was short and fat. They seemed to be quite confident about the honesty of the candidates and were absent minded. After about 10 minutes, one of the invigilators left to answer a phone call. The other invigilator soon went out too.
The atmosphere in the exam hall changed after the invigilators had left. Some of the candidates took out notes and books, some of them brought tablets to search for answers, and some even called others for help. Tim looked back, and he saw the candidate sitting behind him cheating too. The man winked to Tim,as if telling him to cheat in the test because everyone was doing so.Tim shook his head and continued doing the difficult problems at a slow pace.
In about half an hour, the invigilators returned to the exam hall. Tim still had one question left blank at the end of the test. He was almost sure that he was not going to be accepted.
注意:
1.续写的短文词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
