Xishuangbanna, one of the eight autonomous prefectures (自治州) in Southwest China’s Yunnan province, has made it to the list of Lonely Planet’s top 10 regions to visit in 2022.
With the China-Laos railway scheduled to open on December 2, 2021, trips to Xishuangbanna Dai autonomous prefecture would be more accessible. Along with neighboring Myanmar and Laos, the exotic region is best known for dense tropical rainforest and distinct ethnic culture.
A paradise for plants and animals
Xishuangbanna boasts the most intact tropical ecosystem in China, which harbors a quarter of the country’s animal species and one sixth of plants. There are quite a few spots to get a glimpse of this animal and plant paradise, and Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) always comes first.
XTBG, situated in the south of the province, is not only the country’s top level tourist attraction, but also a research institution affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Home to over 13,000 species of plants, it is one of the largest tropical botanical gardens in the country.
The site is divided into two areas: one in the east, and the other in the west. The western area has 20 small botanical gardens that contain a wide variety of peculiar plants. The eastern area is three times bigger than the other, featuring dense tropical rainforests and giant waterfalls.

“Hungary ” I looked at my school headmaster in confusion. “I never mentioned wanting to go to Hungary.” And with that, my adventure started.
My name is Jonathan Diamond and I just finished an amazing exchange year in Hungary.
Going on an exchange had always been my dream. When my high school offered an all-year program,I jumped at the opportunity. It would pay for almost everything and all I had to do was get a plane ticket. I knew where I wanted to go: Spain, the country of dancers wearing flowing red dresses. So when I heard that I was going to Hungary, I was pretty shocked. But I decided to make the best of it, since it was, after all, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Before I knew it, I was on the airplane, leaving for Budapest International Airport, Hungary.
I had times when I almost gave up. Hungarian is the hardest language on the planet. Cultural differences occasionally embarrassed both my peer teens and me. I had to give up eating carrots, my beautiful favorite, for they think carrots are rubbish in their country. The change in the landscape was amazing, looking nothing like skyscrapers, bullet trains, cars, and people in tiny houses that I had been accustomed to. Gradually, I fell in love with the relaxing lifestyle, the warm-hearted people, and getting home at 2:30 p. m. at the latest from school. And I was sad to leave on my very last day.
Having the host family who took me as one of their own members was the best thing I have ever experienced. From my little sisters, I learned how to embrace life to its fullest. From my brothers I learned that it’s OK for a boy to run around the house. From my host parents I learned to stay positive, to smile, and that when you pick the right persons and take their hands, suddenly, you become friends.
4. How did Jonathan feel when he was told to go to Hungary
A. Excited and satisfied. B. Confused and shocked.
C. Amazed and embarrassed. D. Delighted and interested.
5. Why did Jonathan still decide to go to Hungary instead of Spain
A. He didn’t like Spain. B. He wanted to learn Hungarian.
C. It was a rare chance. D. Going to Hungary was much cheaper.
6. What can we learn about Jonathan during his stay in Hungary
A. He fell in love with eating carrots. B. He couldn’t wait to leave.
C. He was surprised by the landscape. D. He quickly got used to the life there.
7. According to Jonathan, the host family________.
A. changed him completely B. taught him how to dance well
C. treated him as equally as a student D. showed him the good things of life

Kids want to spend their summer vacations having fun in the sun with their friends. Reading may not even be on their list. But if you add a lovely dog, that could make reading a pleasant activity.
Now a new study found that reading to dogs helps to improve reading ability because dogs provide a nonjudgmental and supportive atmosphere(氛围).
Three educators from the college decided to look at new ways to get kids to read more after the Education Ministry expressed concern over a great drop in reading scores in fourth-grade students.
These students had reading difficulties because they did not go through school in person during the last three years. They missed out on reading practice with their peers(同龄人)during the second and third grades.
“We want to find an original way that would encourage students to practice their reading,” Har-Zvi, head of the special-education track and senior lecturer at the college said. “And to create that encouragement, we decided to do experiments with dogs.”
Reading to pets encourages kids to acquire confidence and interest in reading, according to the pet food company Purina. That’s not only because the practice of reading to dogs is used in home-schooling to help the kids acquire reading ability, but also because pets are comforting and nonjudgmental. Einat Artzi, whose daughter took part in the experiment, told Ynet that her daughter Michaela ”has loved dogs from a young age. Her experience of reading to dogs greatly increased her desire to read, and in her opinion, it improved her reading abilities. All in all, the experience of introducing dogs into the classroom made her feel comfortable and safe, and she began to enjoy going to school. Michaela is now considered one of the top readers in her class and has a very rich vocabulary. Thanks to this, we also took in a dog.“
8. What led three educators to try to get kids to read more
A. Kids’ difficulty in making friends. B. Teachers’ passive teaching methods.
C. Their worry about students’ health. D. Concerns of education leaders.
9. What gave the kids confidence in the experiment
A. The quiet listening of the dogs. B. The kids’ love for the dogs.
C. The parents’ joining them. D. The guidance from the teachers.
10. How did the experiment influence Michaela according to her mother
A. It made her fall in love with dogs. B. It bettered her reading ability greatly.
C. It improved her relationships with others. D. It allowed her to take a dog to school.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Dogs Are Good Friends to Kids B. Kids’ Reading Scores Are Dropping
C. Dogs Help Make Kids Better Readers D. Kids Studying at Home Brings Problems

The Australian National University (ANU) and an Australian start-up, Lunaria One, are teaming up to grow plants on the moon together, as early as 2025. Lunari a One’s ALEPH project is an early step toward growing plants for food, medicine and oxygen production. However, the problem is that the moon is like a desert (沙漠). There’s no life there, only dust, rocks and water.
“Space provides a unique opportunity to study how to grow plants in extreme environments,” said ANU Associate Professor Caitlin Byrt. “The extreme conditions that the Earth is facing because of climate change present challenges for how we manage food security in the future. Having controlled environments can create the ability to rapidly grow plants after natural disasters or events caused by climate change. So this project is important. If you can create a system for growing plants on the moon, then you can create a system for growing food in some of the most challenging environments on Earth.”
As to what plants to be grown on the moon researchers are still deciding, but one of the front runners under consideration is Tripogon loliiformis, a kind of Australian native (本土的) grass that can live in extreme conditions and survive for months without water. According to a plant biologist, even after losing more than 95 per cent of its relative water content, the dead-looking grass remains alive and continues to grow when provided with water. Whatever plants are selected, they will be transported to the moon in a dry and sleeping state and will come to life upon watering.
The ship will take off in 2025. Upon arrival, pictures and videos will be sent back to Earth over a 72-hour period and will be publicly accessible (可得到的). “The ALEPH project aims to make the science and engineering behind growing life on the moon open to people. And we hope to get everyone involved (参与的) and listen to their opinions. If you’re interested in the project, you can get all the necessary information from our website,” said Lauren Fell, the director of Lunaria One.
12. What does the second paragraph mainly tell us
A. The methods of growing plants in space. B. The challenges of growing plants after disasters.
C. The value of growing plants on the moon. D. The need to grow food for a growing population.
13. Why is Tripogon loliiformis being considered for the project
A It can produce young plants fast. B. It can live with little water.
C. It is the most common grass in Australia. D. It can naturally wake up from a sleeping state.
14. What is Lauren Fell’s attitude towards the public joining the project
A. Supportive. B. Shocked. C. Negative. D. Worried.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. Plants are on the moon for the first time
B. How to care for plants in extreme environments
C. Why can this Australian native grass grow in space
D. A space project aims to grow plants on the moon

Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when Dad drove him to school. At last, it was time for the students to have a test. “Responsibility, ”Mr. White started. Peter wrote it on his test paper quickly and confidently.
“The second word: contribution,” Mr. White said. “So easy.” Peter thought happily. He quickly wrote the word down. Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr. White. After marking the test papers, Mr. White said, “Three of you win a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary get 100 on the spelling test !”
Mr. White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary. Peter’s was an English-Chinese dictionary — the one he liked best. Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered.
After Mr. White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribution” confused him. It didn’t seem right. Peter began to compare it with the one on the word list. It turned out that he had spelled it wrong.
Staring at the red sign “100” which was written on his test paper, Peter was lost in thought. After a while, he remembered a lesson Mum used to teach him, “We ought to be an honest person.”

Peter raised his hand slowly and nervously.

A. It made her fall in love with dogs. B. It bettered her reading ability greatly.
C. It improved her relationships with others. D. It allowed her to take a dog to school.

A. It can produce young plants fast.
A. Plants are on the moon for the first time

they和main food source之间是所属关系,因此用形容词性物主代词their修饰main food source,故填their。
【39题详解】
考查动名词。句意:一些熊可能会停止生育,导致数量迅速下降。根据下文“a rapid decline (减少) in numbers”可知,句子表示“一些熊可能会停止生育,导致数量迅速下降”,“停止做某事”是stop doing sth.,意为“停止做某事”,因此空格处是动名词having。故填having。

“Mr. White, I didn’t get 100 in the test. I missed a word.” He stood up and handed his teacher the dictionary he liked best and his test paper. “I spelled contribution with ‘si’ instead of ‘ti’.” Peter could feel his classmates looking at him with surprise as he walked back to his desk. Mr. White held up Peter’s test paper. “Class,” he said, “Peter did something even more important than spelling every word correctly in a test.” Mr. White smiled at Peter. “He taught us all a lesson on being honest.”
Peter didn’t expect that his teacher would praise him for being honest. He looked around, finding that many of his classmates were smiling at him. “Peter, I want you to have this dictionary because you set a good example for all of us,” Mr. White said. Peter took the dictionary from his teacher and expressed his thanks to him with a big smile. He also really learnt the importance of honesty. He couldn’t wait to tell Mum one of his best days ever.
