The traditional Chinese solar calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms (节气) according to the changes in the sun’s position during the year. 1 They also reflect China’s rich history through the seasonal festivals, special foods, family gatherings and even healthy living tips.
Rain Water, Yushui in Chinese, is the second solar term. 2 When it begins, it brings the increase in rainfall and rise in temperature. With its arrival, a lively spring starts to come. The frozen river water melts, trees and grass turn green again.
According to an old Chinese saying, the rainfall in spring is as precious as oil. In northern China, the spring drought is common and there is only a little rain in this season. 3
Extra care is needed to deal with a returning cold in the late spring that often happens during Rain Water period. The fast increase in air humidity due to rainfall can result in lower temperature and wet weather. 4
The wet weather during Rain Water period is considered harmful for people’s stomach according to Chinese medical practice. Therefore, a bowl of nutritious (有营养的) porridge is the best choice to nourish the body. 5
A.This year, it starts on Feb 19 and ends on Mar 4.

“Dragon” has long been used as the translation of the Chinese word “Loong”. According to some written records, “Loong” was first translated to “dragon” in The Travels of Marco Polo in 1299. 16 “Loong” is similar to the Western dragon, in a way —for example, both are huge and can fly. But the translation is far from being able to show all the meanings that “Loong” has in Chinese culture. Instead, it makes westerners unable to understand it.
17 As we see in movies, the Western dragon is a kind of fire-breathing cruel animal. It is usually beaten by heroes. However, in China, it’s said that the Chinese dragon can fly and has the magical power to control wind and rain. 18 Chinese use “Loong” as one of their favourite names or decorations.
“Loong” is meaningful and native to China and there aren’t any proper expressions for it in Western languages. 19 They aim to tell people the Chinese dragon is totally different from the fire-breathing one in western ancient stories. No matter which way “Loong” is translated, we must show that “Loong” is warm and joyful. It’s very different from the Western dragon. 20

Ten years ago, many people thought that the age of physical books was coming to an end. The objects that had been the companions of millions of readers for hundreds of years were about to disappear. Soon, we’d all be reading on little electronic screens and laughing at the memory of places called “libraries” and “bookshops”.
46 At least in the UK, as The Guardian noted, sales of e-books are falling while sales of physical books are rising. More surprisingly, it’s young people who are buying the most physical books. More than 60 percent of 16-to-24-year-olds preferred print books to e-books. The most popular reason given was “I like to hold the product.”
Books become very personal objects to lovers of reading. It often starts with the way they get them. 47 And we carry books around with us everywhere.
If there’s a mark made on the pages from coffee or food, it doesn’t matter. 48 It’s as if readers of physical books make friends with their books.
Of course, some could say that the devices on which people read e-books, like Kindles and iPads are also objects that we like. But it isn’t quite the same. A Kindle can hold as many pieces of writing as a whole library. 49
Physical books are as valuable to some readers as photographs of family members. This “friendship” people develop with books isn’t just about feelings. Research has shown that readers remember more information read from physical books than electronic ones.
However, there’s no doubt e-books are here to stay. 50 But it’s also certain that physical books, which have been in production since the fifteenth century, are here to stay, too.
A.They aren’t simply a “here today, gone tomorrow” thing.
B.These accidents make the book—our book—even more personal.
C.However, it seems not true about the idea of the death of the physical books.
D.Many buyers of books like to write down their names on the inside cover when they’ve bought one.
E.But a story we remember from our time turning its real pages in our favourite armchair remains in our memory forever.

A.Chinese believe “Loong” can bring them strength and good luck.
B.In what ways is the Chinese dragon quite different from the Western dragon

D.We should always try to explain “Loong” well so that Westerners won’t get lost in the translation.
E.Culture experts believe that it’s just a good idea to bring the new word “Loong” to describe the Chinese dragon.

Ten years ago, many people thought that the age of physical books was coming to an end. The objects that
had been the companions of millions of readers for hundreds of years were about to disappear.

Imagine you are studying abroad in London. Your parents have sent you a package. You go to the post office and ask the postman when it will arrive. He tells you in “a fortnight”. You walk away shaking your head. 71 If you don’t know what it means you have probably been studying American English, which sometimes uses different words from British English. In the US, instead of saying your package will arrive in “a fortnight”, they would say, in “two weeks”. 72
Besides simple differences like spelling, like “colour” in London compared to “color” in New York, there are even more different words. If you got really confused and wanted to call someone for help at a public
telephone, you’d still have problems. 74 It definitely will get you even more confused.
75 You can actually learn a lot from both two languages. It doesn’t matter which English you study, British or American, although people from each country will tell you their language is best. The key though, when writing a paper or sitting an exam, is to pick one and stick with it throughout.

E.What’s more if you need to fill up, you had better ask for a “gas station” in US.
