My first job at KCRW was Ruth Seymour’s assistant. Soon after, I became Assistant General Manager and worked closely with her for 16 years. Therefore, I have had the opportunity to observe her and the enormous impact she had on KCRW and the other radio stations.
Ruth did nothing conventionally and nothing she created was a reaction to anything. She created KCRW not to gain the most listeners or to win any awards but to be an intellectual force for arts, culture and smart ideas. She wanted to start the conversation, not just contribute to it.
Ruth had the highest artistic standards, which is why KCRW aired radio dramas like the 10-hour Babbitt and 30-hour Ulysses. She created Jewish Short Stories From Eastern Europe and Beyond in two audio collections that featured famous actors reading the work of Jewish authors like Sholem Aleichem, Philip Roth and Isaac Bashevis Singer. KCRW sold more of those collections than anything else in our history.
Ruth went to a newsstand every day and read articles from New York Times, word for word, on the air at noon because ordinary people couldn’t easily get that paper then. She discovered people who matched her intellect at dinners or parties and gave them on-air shows on journalism, literature, film, art, theater, travel, dance or music.
She said it best, “I wanted to do the program as an act of love and respect.”
When she came to KCRW in 1977, she found herself building the station in a junior high classroom right off the playground. Now KCRW could be heard across Los Angeles. Most powerfully, the radio format(总体安排)she created continues to be used by radio stations—news of the day, debates of ideas, art, artists, food, literature and film.
Outspoken and fearless women leaders were rare in the 1960s and 1970s—in fact, women couldn’t get credit cards apart from their husbands until 1974—which is why her achievements are so singular.
24. Why did Ruth broadcast Ulysses and Babbitt
A. The listeners loved them.
B. They were award-winning works.
C. The authors were her friends.
D. They were artistically important.
25. What does the sixth paragraph mainly focus on
A. Ruth’s widely-felt influence.
B. Ruth’s hard working conditions.
C. Inspiration of Ruth’s programs.
D. The variety of Ruth’s radio formats.
26. What does the word “singular” underlined in the last paragraph mean
A. Strange. B. Reproducible.
C. Remarkable. D. Lasting.
27. How is the text mainly developed
A. By making comparisons. B. By listing examples.
C. By following time order. D. By conducting surveys.

With the Forbidden City and Jingshan Park to its east, Zhongnanhai to its south, Beihai Park, also known as Northern Sea Park, is one of the oldest, largest and best-preserved ancient imperial gardens(皇家花园)in China located in the center of Beijing.
Beihai Park is said to be built according to a traditional Chinese legend. The story is that once upon a time there were three magic mountain s called “Penglai”, “Yingzhou” and “Fangzhang”. Gods in those mountains had a kind of medicine which would help humans gain immortality(永生). Consequently, many emperors constantly sought those mountains. For example, Emperor Qin Shihuang had sent people to look for the magic mountain s but they failed. Emperor Wudi, the fifth emperor of the Western Han Dynasty did similar things.
It was believed that different mountain-water combinations in ancient Chinese architecture led to totally different effects. So from then on, almost every emperor during the succeeding dynasties would build a royal garden with one-pool-with-three-hill layout near his palace. Beihai Park was surely built after this traditional style: the water of Beihai with Zhongnanhai is the Taiye Pool; the Jade Flowery Islet, the island of the Circular City and the Xishantai Island represent the three magic mountains.
Actually, Beihai Park was initially built in the Liao Dynasty(916-1125)and was repaired and rebuilt in the following dynasties including Jin, Yuan, Ming and Qing. The large-scale rebuilding in the reign of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty(1644—1911)generally established the present scale and pattern. In 1925, it was first opened to the public, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world every year.
It is enjoyable to walk around the various scenic areas in Beihai Park. There are many places to visit, including the Bai Ta, Five-Dragon Pavilions, Nine-Dragon Wall, Yong’an Temple and so on. There is also a classy restaurant called Fangshan Restaurant where the Empress Cixi once dined.
28. Where is Beihai Park
A. Near the ocean. B. In the south of Zhongnanhai.
C. To the west side of Jingshan Park. D. In the suburb of Beijing City.

Artificial intelligence(AI)tools designed to operate at human levels have greatly expanded in popularity over the past year. These include OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Bard and Microsoft’s AI-powered search engine Bing. Such tools, also known as chatbots or generative AI, are computer-powered systems. They are designed to interact smoothly with humans and perform high-level writing and creative work.
In recent months, these tools have demonstrated an ability to produce high-quality work. This has led some technology experts to warn that generative AI systems could end up replacing workers in many industries.
This year, researchers at Harvard Business School and other organizations carried out an experiment. It aimed to test how well AI tools could help workers perform their usual duties or tasks. It involved more than 700 business advisors, called consultants, from Massachusetts-based Boston Consulting Group.
Harvard Business School recently published the results from the experiment in a working paper. The main findings suggest that AI tools like ChatGPT can greatly improve worker performance. For example, researchers found that, on average, workers who used OpenAI’s latest ChatGPT 4 tool completed 12 percent more tasks than non-ChatGPT users. Tasks carried out with help from the AI technology were completed 25 percent laster. And the team found the quality of work performed by consultants using ChatGPT4 increased by about 40 percent.
However, the paper also noted areas where the performance of consultants using ChatGPT 4 dropped. The researchers said this was especially true with tasks the AI tool was not good at completing. “Of tasks the AI was good at, the experiment showed it significantly improved human performance,” the paper said. “But for tasks ChatGPT 4 was not right for humans relied too much on the AI and were more likely to make mistakes.”
The team suggests one of the biggest barriers to companies effectively using AI is not knowing which tasks can be completed best with the technology. Finding this out will require businesses to carry out thoughtful research and training efforts in order to find the right mix of AI and human-level work.
32. What is a purpose of designing AI tools according to the text
A. To perform low-level writing. B. To replace technology experts.
C. To finish high-quality work. D. To improve interpersonal communication.
33. Why does the author mention ChatGPT 4 in paragraph 4
A. To explain the disadvantages of AI tools.
B. To show how well AI tools could help workers.
C. To forecast changes in the future working environment.
D. To compare the work performance between humans and AI tools.
34. What can be learned from the last paragraph
A. Companies need to balance the work of AI and humans.
B. It is useless to train so many workers to learn to use AI.
C. It is easy to find the right mix of AI and human-level work.
D. Research on using Al effectively has been made by businesses.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. ChatGPT Can See, Hear and Speak Now
B. Ways to Improve Your Performance at Work
C. Fast Development of Artificial Intelligence
D. AI Tools Help but also Harm Worker Performance

Nancy is used to getting up early every day. She is a young mother. By seven, she has already eaten breakfast, had a cup of coffee, washed the dishes, taken her shower, and put on her make-up. Then, it’s time to do the housework.
One early Saturday morning, when she was washing her son’s vacuum bottle(保温瓶), she felt upset. After having been used for long, the bottle was in poor condition. It was high time that she should buy a new one for her kid Bill, but her budget was limited. She had to decide that she would buy a new one only months plaining wasn’t how she would normally choose to start the day, especially with the sun shining.
To cheer up and continue the day a bit more optimistically, she left the housework for later and set out with her little kid Bill for their morning walk on the beach a little earlier than usual. The local shops hadn’t opened yet. It was quiet outside; there were few people around.
Walking through the down town area, something on the pavement caught her attention. From a distance, it appeared to be a package of some sort. They walked over and Nancy picked it up. Upon examination, it turned out to be a brown paper bag. The downtown had nine blocks with stores. Grocery stores, furniture shops, cake shops, banks, bookstores, home-goods stores, clothing shops, and other businesses lined the street. Looking around, Nancy found none of them had been open for business. It was too early.
Nancy knew all this indicated that the object had most likely been purchased by someone the evening or day before. Since it was near the road, Nancy guessed someone must have dropped it, probably while loading other bags into a car.
Nancy looked inside the bag for more information. After opening it, she found there was a small handbag. In the bag, there were many cards. Among them, there was the owner’s ID card, which showed the owner’s address and name. Besides, there was a box in the brown bag. “What may be in the box ” Nancy thought to herself.

第一节
One possible version:
Last Saturday, our school invited a body language expert to deliver a lecture on the importance of using body language correctly to us students in the school hall.
The expert not only introduced us various types of body language, but also taught us how to use them properly. Meanwhile, he provided some interesting demonstrations.
I was fascinated by the expert’s vivid speech. From this experience, I realized the importance of body language and made up my mind to pay attention to it in the future.
第二节
One possible version:
She checked it, surprised to find there was a new vacuum bottle for kids in it. Seeing it, Bill took the vacuum bottle from Nancy and jumped up and down with joy. With her heart beating fast, Nancy wondered whether they should give it back. However, thinking how worried the owner must have been, she bent down and looked at Bill, saying, “No, Bill. We should give it back.” Hearing it, Bill cried, but Nancy didn’t change her mind. Then, after some explanation, little Bill seemed to understand and finally nodded, supporting her idea.
Nancy looked at the owner’s address again and made sure where the owner lived. Then, they took a bus, heading towards the owner’s home. Before long, Nancy and Bill reached the owner’s home. They knocked on the door. A tall woman opened the door, confused to see the two strangers. Nancy then handed the bag to her and explained how she had come across the bag. It was then that the tall woman realized that she had lost the bag. She was so thankful that she insisted on giving her $100. And she offered to give the new vacuum bottle to Bill after seeing Bill liked it so much. However, Nancy declined. In her opinion, doing a good thing itself doesn’t mean trying to get a reward.
